The yellowing is likely caused by the plastic containing bromine, a fire retardant used in plastic manufacturing, unfortunately it reacts to U.V causing the plastic to go yellow and brittle, it's also the reason old games consoles like the SNES and PS1 turn yellow.
I totally remember having that American pie unrated one because that release had more features than the previous release. Never had any the other ones though.
Do you remember that Total Recall Special Edition DVD with the Mars tin that was housed in this little cardboard slip box that had the poster art on it? That is definitely some of the worst DVD packaging I've seen. It was so bad that they eventually reissued it in a normal DVD case with a slip.
Yeah I really never saw these until I found the legend one last year. The yellowing problem has been fixed with certain releases that advertise PET slipcover, its some chemical process that is added or something.
My Legend Ultimate edition DVD is coming apart like that as well, I need to glue it back together lol. I just took the discs out and put them in CD cases.
I think it's much weirder that Cats the stage musical got one, as opposed to 2 American Pie movies. As for the American Pie thing, yes it's certainly interesting that 2 of the 7 of these cases are American Pie films. But I don't think they only planned to make 7. They just started with that first batch of 7, and American Pie 1 & 2 were in that first batch. They probably planned to make hundreds more. But they noticed the flaws early on, and completely ceased production. So it becomes this interesting tidbit.
I feel like Warner Bros took inspiration from these when they made their Diamond Luxe blu-ray line. Similar slim design and probably just as fragile. Like you, I also thought American Pie was the only film with this packaging, looks like I’m gonna have to collect all of these (minus Cats)
I still buy Super Jewel Box and Superbit DVD releases. I love the challenge of finding a Super Jewel Box intact and in good condition. Plus, I love TV movies, and most of those were released in Super Jewel Boxes. I like Superbit DVDs because they look cool, and there weren't a lot of movies released in the format.
I had American pie, They also Released The Mummy Ultimate Edition in a regular case which I had I remember they offered movie tickets to both sequels with purchase they were $24.99 at Target 25 years ago 😅 I feel old
Ik this from being into sneakers when I was a kid, that material is the same as a lot of designer shoes and sneakers. Oxidization overtime colors if you can look up things like “Jordan 11s yellowed?” And it’ll show you the same effect
I have the same release of Legend. Unfortunately mine finally broke. I’ve had it for years. Legend is one of my favorite movies. I do think that dvd packaging is neat though and unique. They could’ve done better though for sure. I was so happy when Arrow did a nice blu ray release a few years back. I got the limited box set. Hoping it’ll get a 4K release but if not I’m happy with the blu ray. Speaking of Legend which cut is your favorite? Mine is the director’s cut. Enjoyed the video my friend. Keep up the good work.
Mine is by far the Directors Cut. I hate the changes they made in the US version, a purple Darkness with neon finger nails? Get out of here! 😂 but… I do love the much tangerine dream did & I listen to that soundtrack all the time. Sadly we will never get a 4k, arrow put out a statement that the negative was so damaged that it wouldn’t benefit from a 4k. The bluray is a 4k scan though & looks amazing
I remember those releases. The only reason I didn't buy any of them as if you're a fan of any of those movies they already had previously released collectors edition dvds you probably had in your collection. They didn't look like bad packaging at the time but based on those pictures they look terrible today.
@@thelastmoviestanding It wasn't cracked or yellowed. I wouldn't say was perfect as I didn't really think of myself as a collector, I just like watching movies, so it's likely it had shelf wear.
I found one in great condition at a local pawnshop for 50 cents, and I had never seen one like it before. I also have a major league 2 dvd case with artificial turf on the front lol
I've got 2 copies of said "Legend" DVD ...but also 3 standard Blu-ray copies & 2 copies of the Arrow Linited Edition Re-master Blu-ray release. By the way ...the Directors cut of Legend sucks, but the Theatrical release with the Tangerine Dream soundtrack is a freaking classic. 👍
@@thelastmoviestanding You're one of the few that prefers the Directors Cut which was originally going to be the Theatrical release. However ...the Movie Studio rejected it & TG was hired for the Soundtrack plus there were a few Video Edits too for the the final Theatrical release. 😀
@thelastmoviestanding I found one on AMAZON for $19. I'll let you know tomorrow. I FINALLY got the NEVERENDING STORY from a 3rd party..IMPRINT still hasn't sent it.
$40?! What! lol you should be able to find some of these out in the wild. The hardest 1 for me to find was Meet Joe Black. I see the American Pie & Legend 1s all the time for $5

Who else went straight to eBay and look for these cool ultimate editions and was surprised they were 40$ a pop ? Great video 🎉
I think I found the AMERICAN PIE one on AMAZON for $19.
I found two of these for 50 cents a piece at a local pawnshop
@ Lucky!
@jjthekollector it was the legend and the notting hill ones. Still haven't seen notting hill yet, but the legend one had me all excited lol
@ I was trying to get Meet Joe Black sealed and it was like 40 bucks 😂
Bringing it back... I think I had the legend version back in the day. Great memories.

I have tons of such cases for Anime. HK manufactured case for Anime likes to make such packaging. Yellow like crazy.
Yeah I really never saw these until I found the legend one last year. The yellowing problem has been fixed with certain releases that advertise PET slipcover, its some chemical process that is added or something.
Yea that’s probably why they stopped making them, but the ones in good condition that have lasted this long, definitely worth grabbing
“These are so fragile, it’s giving me anxiety”…. *Proceeds to manhandle the crap out of them*
My first suncoast purchase was Rocky VHS and I think like that Friday the 13 dvd set, haven’t heard suncoast in so long
@@jjthekollector suncoast was soooo expensive haha

I preordered the last dragon on vhs at suncoast in 2000
The last one is in Beaumont, Texas. I went in a week ago and there having a closing sale now. Sad times
Love the American pie movies. Little did I know years later I would be in a movie with Thomas Ian Nicholas (Kevin). It's called Adverse.

Same!!! I cry every time lol
Still have ultimate edition of American Pie. Definitely not clear anymore, just yellow 😂
Yea the white ones turn yellow easily sadly
I have never heard of this kind of DVD packaging, well, you never stop learning 😅👍
Girl with the dragon tattoo 2011 was a different paper folded package then the disc looked like a burnt/ ripped dvd

Yeah definitely bromine yellowing with the plastic, if you can take the artwork out you can actually remove the yellowing with a little chemical bath.
Really? I may have to experiment on a cheap used 1 haha
