    This is the best type of video for us - the hikers! I think the only thing you didn't include was where you bought the gas canister. So helpful to see all the spots and let's me know how much food to carry based on what I encounter on the trail.

      Glad you enjoyed the video and you’re right, I totally spaced on the info on the gas canister, info I wish I had before I went too. There is an outdoor store in Funchal called O Bordão that I bought the gas canister from. I believe there is a decathalon at a mall in Funchal that should have canisters as well.

    Loved this video! Were you dealing with extreme elevation changes for the entire hike? Were there any 'relatively' flat and easy going sections? I may be traveling there soon and trying to learn all I can. Thanks!

    • @RyanJSchmitz
      @RyanJSchmitz  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only “flat” section was in the Fanal area, otherwise we were constantly going up or back down. I think a lot of that is by design for the MIUT. We definitely could have had less elevation change if we stayed along the peaks more. Madeira is definitely dramatic landscape and flat areas are few and far between.

    • @RyanJSchmitz

      I knew I forgot something. On my way from the airport to Porto Moniz we stopped at an outdoor store in Funchal named O Bordão. They didn't have 125g canisters when I was there, so we purchased 250g canisters, but normally they do. It was the most expensive gas I've ever purchased, I want to say they were 15 euro each!

    • @RyanJSchmitz
      @RyanJSchmitz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Yuchun, that’s awesome that your doing the hike. There is an outdoor store in Funchal called O Bordão that I bought the gas canister from. I believe there is a decathalon at a mall in Funchal that should have canisters as well. I think you’d be fine trying to accomplish it in 5. I added quite a bit of time due to my injury and filming. Also in November the days were much shorter, so you should have much more daylight. I used a 30 degree bag but a 40F degree bag would probably be fine. You’re going to love the hike.

    Hi Ryan, I was in Madeira a month before you but I rented a car, five wonderful days and the good fortune of having only sunny days, I have a lot of shots taken with the M2P drone and I have not yet had the time and desire to edit a video , but I'll use them for what I'm about to tell you. I watched your video, I follow you and I follow Kraig Adams, I have been wanting to do a long distance hike for a long time but unfortunately for work reasons I cannot have holidays in the summer.
    You inspired me a lot, I have already bought the tickets to return to Madeira and I booked everything you indicated for March, including the nature inn! so I will only use the tent once, if everything goes as planned. I would like to ask you, I hope you can help me, do you think the canister stove is indispensable? How many freeze-dried lunch / dinner meals should I take with me? how many were you? Or do you think you could actually do without it? Since on the fifth day I crashed the M2P, will I have the M3 with me, can 2 batteries be enough? or better 3? Thanks in advance, this is my first time!

    • @RyanJSchmitz
      @RyanJSchmitz  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome! I really wish we had more sunny days on our trip just so I could have got the drone up more on the first few days. I have a feeling the section from Fanal just before the decent into Sexial would have been beautiful, but we were socked in, so I don't know. As for your questions, you could do the trip without a stove, although a hot meal when you're soaking wet can be pretty nice! If I remember correctly, Nature Inn had a food prep area, you may want to check with them to see if their little kitchen has a stove where you can heat something up. As you saw in my video, we were able to buy meals at restaurants along the way, so you really don't need much. If you follow my schedule, the must have meals you can't get from hotels/restaurants are dinner on day 1(although maybe nature inn can provide food?) this is also assuming you are bringing the picnic breakfast from Hotel Aqua Nature Madeira, breakfast/lunch/dinner day 2, breakfast day 3, and maybe dinner on day 4(depending on what casa Ruivo has). Doing it again, a bag of granola, maybe a bit more chorizo, and some other dense/high calorie snacks would have cut it. I think 2 batteries, with the much longer flight time of the m3, would get you to Encumeada, recharge there, and 2 batteries to Ribiero Frio, recharge there, would be enough.
      This is a great hike for it to be your first longer hike, lots of place to get additional support, food, water, and if the weather turns on you, you can bail out pretty easy for a day or two. Keep me posted on your experience!

    Curious why you only went to Caramujo on day 2? Looks like 8 miles or so from the nature inn area. Why not all the way to encumeda which is only around 10 miles?

    • @RyanJSchmitz
      @RyanJSchmitz  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not quite sure where you are getting those distances from, guessing those are straight line distances instead of trail. 2nd day according to my gps was 10.5m and Caramujo to Encumeada was 10.9m. Neither day being exceptionally big but we were fighting daylight due to the time of year and we weren't in a rush due to the length of each day.
