Hiking 150km Across Madeira Island on the MIUT - Madeira Island Ultra Trail

  • In this cinematic hiking video, I hike the #MIUT also known as the #Madeira Island Ultra Run in early November of 2021. Our trek was a total of 93 miles and 30,000 feet of elevation gain (150 km and nearly 10,000 meters of elevation gain). We backpacked, camped, and hiked a total of 6 days, 5 nights, as we made it through a huge variety of terrain near the ocean, through the cloud forests, and onto the peaks of Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo the highest peak on the island. The hike should have been about 115km long, but somehow, between getting lost, and also doing my back and forth with my filming, I clocked 150km. That's a nice big number, so I'm going to go with that instead.

    I will actually be doing a commentary version of this video which will include my thoughts on the trail shortly.

    Beautiful video Ryan :) I particularly enjoyed the woodland shots... really mystical and definitely not what I expected from an island off the coast of North Africa!!
    I have had friends visit Madeira from the UK and they rave about the trails out there so it's high on my list and I hope to visit in the coming years. Did you encounter other trails you hope to return and complete or would you just recommend the MIUT for those looking for a great hiking experience on the island?
    Also great to hear of your speedy recovery from your injury. I hope that you only continue to get stronger in that recovery.
    Best wishes,
    Will

    • @RyanJSchmitz
      @RyanJSchmitz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, that whole side of the island with all the moss was not what I expected at all. I don't think that side of the island gets the same amount of attention as the Pico to Pico area. 99% of the hikers, all day hikers, we saw on the trail were between those two peaks.
      The concentration of trails on that island is really incredible. So many trails to choose from. There is so much of the world out there, I don't know if I'll return just because I love experiencing completely new places. I did love the island, trails, and food, so for anyone who hasn't been there, it should be high on their list. I may go back for the mountain biking, I was very impressed with the work they had put in to build well-designed and marked mountain bike trails.
      I don't know if the MIUT is the best trail, it was just the longest continuous trail I could find online. There are some sections that were not my favorite. I feel like the section between Encumeada to Pico Ruivo was not as good as if we had just stayed on the ridge between those two spots...We seemed to go down just to go back up. It was pretty, but I have to assume staying on the ridge the entire time would have been better. I also wish we had a little more time along the coastline. It's just so dramatic and we only had a few miles along it.
      I really needed that hike to jumpstart the last bit of my recovery, I'm probably about 95% of the way there but I feel confident in scheduling just about any hike I want after completing this one!
      Let me know what trails you hike and what you think of Madeira when you get out there!

    • @RyanJSchmitz
      @RyanJSchmitz  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@luisvasconcelos1053 that’s actually how I originally found the route. I watched @jackson groves video on the MIUT and thought it looked like a longer route on Madeira that I could film my way. If it was closer I could certainly see going back again, just so much more of the world I want to see that’s within that 10-15hour travel time from me.

      I go back and forth. I suck at framing sometime because I get lazy while hiking and I want people to focus on a particular part of the shot.
