Brother Jared please don't apologize for restricting the valuable time that you sacrifice for these inspired lessons. When I discovered your Unshaken podcast in which you went through verses one at a time I felt elated. The more common process of going through chapters at a rate that requires omitting essential events that are necessary for one who wants to understand exactly what is going on in that chapter. That "rush" method disappoints me because I have gained so much from the extra time you take by sharing personal experiences. It is during those moments in the lesson as I watch you gaze away from the camera and can sense that you are receiving inspiration that "miraculously" relates to important gospel doctrine and principles that I would have missed had you not taken the extra time to do so. I feel privileged, enlightened and amazed to participate in a teacher-Holy Ghost moment every time that happens.. However, I understand all of the sacrifices that you have been making for the past four years and the toll it has been taking on your family and career so I will have to accept your new approach regarding to teaching the lesson. I will miss the verse by verse teaching method that you have taught so effectively for over 600 hours since Unshaken was launched. Thank you Brother Jared for all that you have done for me and how you have helped me understand "The Word of God" better than I have ever understood it since I was baptized 43 years ago at the age of 27 when I transitioned from a lost and confused man of the world to a dedicated and grateful Latter Day Saint.

Dont apologize. I got sucked in 4 years ago on the B of M, and i rediscovered my love for it. Today, I got an answer to very important prayer. It's true that we pray to God to speak to him, but he speaks to us through the scriptures. I heard him loud and clear today a d through the spirit gave me a very precise method. Thank you.

I have never been able to understand what I am reading in the Book of Mormon, I was born and raised in the church, went to seminary, and have remained active, but the scriptures are beyond my comprehension.
I am not giving up just keep trying, I have to say you are helping me comprehend the Book Of Mormon more than I ever have.

Brother Halverson, I'm spiritually, physically and emotionally motivated by the in-depth study each week. My daily routine is to listen to the Unshaken podcasts during my daily travels to the golf course & running errands (yes I'm retired). Then each night I spend another couple hours watching the TH-cam video broadcasts and as I watch, listen and study I make copious notes on my phone as we flow through our studies verse by verse. So I pray you and your family could be blessed with an extra few hours in the day. Seriously, it's a huge blessing in my wife and I lives to have found your broadcasts. Thank you so much for the life of commitment to teaching the gospel.

Lengthy videos are refreshing… we never have the time in our SS classes to really think together and delve into every verse and have insightful discussions because of the time factor. You have given that to us and opened our minds to new ways of uncovering and understanding and interpreting the written words. Thank you and your family for your sacrifice of time. It makes an eternal difference in the lives of those beyond your classrooms that you touch virtually. You have a gift that you have not left unturned under a stone. I have been a convert for almost 50 years and I love your videos. They enrich and often give me a new perspective. Without your divinely led inspiration, I would still struggle to uncover the layers of understanding that you help me with. Please don’t ever stop!!

34 minutes in: Trying to persuade a Prodigal... I am in tears! Thankfully none of our sons have gone the "anti" route, but they are also not active. In no way are they doing bad either, quite the contrary... they are excellent fathers, have great jobs and LOVE their wives and children, treat their parents with love & respect... they just don't see the need to be active. We do have one son on the other side of the veil who died while serving his mission... somehow, I always thought he might be persuasive them from the other side to bring the other 3 "home". He was the baby and the other 3 are older. Your reading of 1 Nephi 7:8 helped me understand Nephi's broken heart at the hardness of his brother's hearts! I still want my boy's to come "home" to the Gospel... thankfully they still come to our home and LOVE being here as we are never critical... I hope their "younger brother" can send help from the other side! Thank you for touching my heart today!! Thank you for the special spirit you bring while I've studied with you since the beginning!! Great Work by a great Servant of God!

Br Jared. Since I am getting older and the scriptures say that old men shall dream dreams I am trying to ‘go to sleep unto the Lord’. I want to fill my mind with spiritual input before bed and invite Him to affect my dreams through prayer. He has eight hours available to do what He wants, with Satan or worldly cares not affecting me. I hope to have things to write down after I awake. At the very least I wake up less depressed. Food for thought.

Your explanation of 1 Nephi 6:5 made me so emotional ("...but the things which are pleasing unto God and unto those who are not of the world."). I have loved the scriptures more and have learned more through your wonderfully thorough and spiritual discussions and that made me excited to think this is for me, one who is trying to be "not of the world" ❤️

Thank you Brother Halverson for reminding me how to speak to and treat those who have chosen to leave Mormonism. My husband of almost 24 years has chosen to leave and it has been really hard on me and our marriage. I strive to be like our Savior and show love and understanding but sometimes or often I fail miserably. I appreciate you and all you help me see in the Book of Mormon and how to apply these teachings in my life. You are a great blessing to me and so many others. Thank you!

I’m so sorry that you are experiencing a spiritual divide in your marriage. This happened in my family 4 years ago and it made Lehi and Sarah’s parental pain so real that I wept for them. Nephi tried to capture what they did to strengthen each other, stay consistent with their own spiritual beliefs, and guide children with extremely different ideas. There is a lot to learn from them. My heart goes out to you. Hold on!

Lehi needing the plates reminds me of people evacuating from natural disasters- they want proof of ownership of their property and birth certificates to prove their children belong to them. I would also grab scriptures if I were evacuating.
I used to struggle with the danger the boys were in to obtain the records from Laban, but we do the same thing with our records.

Thank you for sharing your love and understanding of the Book of Mormon and other scriptures.
I teach the valiant 9 and 10-year-olds and this Sunday I was able to share with them how to look at the 12 witnesses of the Book of Mormon represent spiritual and intellectual. My teaching companions understanding and knowledge was strengthened as well because you shared what you had gained.
Tonight as I listened and studied with you My eyes were opened to a new understanding from the first family of the Book of Mormon. I'm not struggling in my personal family life, I am struggling in my work family. I have a co-worker who's tragically a broken man and a misery is definitely his companion. I think it is so important when talking to family/Friends/Conversion partners about choices to be mindful of tone. As we can read Nephi’s language, there are two ways we can speak in like manner. It's so delicate, and each situation is so different. I hope that we can include God in the conversion so he can have his say.

When you talked about missionaries and baptismal invitations it reminded me of my mission when we invited a family to be baptized. Just like how you said sometimes proposals don’t always go well the first time, the first thing this family said to us was they didn’t want to be baptized. Thanks to the spirit of the lord 3 months later the entire family walked in the waters of baptism! It truly is wonderful the miracles that can happen when the spirit touches a willing heart! #letsbelikeishmael

Brother in Christ, thank you for your wisdom, for your words, an answer to my prayer that I have been praying, about my two sons who have walked away from the gospel has been answered.
I am a mom who worries and worries until I make myself sick.
I know I cannot take their agency away ( trust me I wish I could) it’s very hard to watch them go down this path knowing that they will never be happy.
But the lesson today I hope will help me pray and muster up “ Brave Trust” and speak with them, I hope I can speak like Nephi spoke to his brothers and pray that my words will somehow touch their hearts and souls.

Jared! Did I just hear you use the work “Punk”??? Laman and Lemuel never rebelled to strike a conscious blow against God directly, hardly anyone does really. No, they hardened their hearts for the sake of fear - harder to judge them now isn’t it? Nobody gets “punked” unless fear has firmly overwhelmed courage. Laman and Lemuel definitely felt punked by Nephi, dangerous. Brother Halverson, it is very common today, and always has been, to get “ended” over even a misperceived attempt to relegate the wrong crew to punk. In this World fear rules. Excellent lesson by the way. You are a good man, an innocent man, a holy man. Your mannerisms still drive me crazy, LOL. I love you!

Thank you for giving some of us grace for times when we haven't been as on fire with the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ, as we (or rather I) have during periods of life.
As for me, I think I got this passion initially from a Fireside by John Bytheway, but I have often gravitated towards the War Chapters (as we often call them) with Captain Moroni, the Sons of Helaman, and Pahoran.
I especially love Pahoran's response letter to Moroni, and have often felt and seen how things are playing out politically for those of us who are here in America.
(And I'm sure other Saints from around the World may be able to compare what's happening politically in the Book of Mormon with their own Countries as well.)
I also loved Alma 32 and the hope that even if we only have a Desire to believe, this can be enough to start with in our journey of Faith in Jesus Christ and His Gospel.
I am grateful for Alma 36 and the hope that no matter how dark a place I'm in or how far away I find myself from the path, there is Always Jesus Christ and I can have hope in His Rescue!
Not that I should take advantage and misuse His offering, but when I decide to Repent, He is there.
I remember reading the phrase in the scriptures about "But His Arm is Stretched out Still."
I thought that meant that with the punishment, there would Still be more waiting to come!
Luckily, however, I learned that this meaning is just the opposite.
Yes, there is an opposition; and Yes, there are consequences for our actions (good and bad).
But as I've been reading the Old Testament, I have learned that ".. His Arm is Stretched Out Still.", is an act Not of More Punishment, but instead, Grace and Mercy! Another chance to get up and try again.
Thank you for remaining Unshaken. I need this and Jesus Christ's Example. ♥🙏✝🕊

You really shouldn't talk yourself down so much. You are a son of God, when you invited your wife to marry you, you were offering everything the Father has. She didn't lower her standards to marry you, she probably understood the majesty of the throne you were really offering. She showed great wisdom to marry a man of God. Which is probably what Ishmael understood himself, his children were being offered eternal salvation, or certain destruction, he chose wisely, to leave and gave his children a chance to know the Lord.

Brother Halverson, thank you for the time you put into your videos. I have been watching for years, but this is my first comment. I served in Puerto Rico, I think about a decade before you did. I love your chart around the 12 minute mark on what the Book of Mormon is and what it isn't.
I did want to point out that very few of the 66 books of the Bible start with a lengthy genealogy. 1 Chronicles does. 1 Samuel gives five generations for Samuel and states they were from Ephraim. Matthew and Luke have genealogies in their second chapters. But the other Gospels do not. I wished we had more of Moses' line in Exodus--without such a line we get arguments between advocates of the short and long sojourn theories.
Genesis is the most famous for genealogies--there are 11 of them in that book (including the Generations of the Heavens and the Earth). These genealogies serve as transitions between the 12 parts of Genesis. The author or redactor of Genesis seems to have used them are organizational framing.
So yes, some Biblical books do start with lists of generations long or short. The most common thing we see in the beginning of Old Testament books is a statement of parents and of a previous ancestor. Moses was of the tribe of Levi through a particular son, but then a gap to his parents. Jeremiah descends from the priests at Anathoth, but the genealogy isn't spelled out. We know David's genealogy. We know Saul's father and that he descended from Benjamin, but not the full genealogy. We aren't told the ancestry of any of the four major and twelve minor prophets. If this was such an important theme, why don't we get it from the prophetic books.
In other words, Nephi is in line with many books of the Bible by identifying his parents and an ancestor, without filling in the details. He does tell us that Lehi took account for them. Mormon said he abridged his record from the large plates of Nephi, which was for the secular history, so I wonder whether Lehi's own account was in the lost pages.

Remarkable as always Bro Hal! I was hoping you would reference that quote from Elder Hales as you often have in the past; i.e., “More regrettable than the Church being accused of not being Christian is when Church members react to such accusations in an un-Christlike way,” thus proving them right.

I too thought of this 2008 talk from Elder Hales. I always think of the time in 2013 when Planned Parenthood passed out free condoms at public schools in Salt Lake wrapped in packaging sporting the CTR shield. Members of the church were outraged, said awful things. The church leadership was silent.

I've had this thought in my head rattling around that one way I can look at the BoM is the transition between the Old Testament and the New. This is bringing some interesting insights especially with Laman and Lemuel. If Nephi is the New Testament, are they the Old? As I read further, will I notice if the situations where Laman and Lemuel struggle reflects new Gospel/ways thinking beyond the old Laws they have been raised in?

That part of changing heart of 3rd person. It's need for today's politics. The People that have chosen theiir political parties or candidates no persuasive feels will change their mind. So in a debate you ate looking for the 3rd person..the one that hasn't made the mind up. So always be calm when delivering facts.

The Book of Mormon is for the convincing of the Jew and Gentile and in Chapter 6:5 for those “not of the world”. For those who have died and those still to come? Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world”

Brother Halverson, I've been thinking about parenting and the proving of contraries as it applies to raising children. People tell me I impose too few consequences on my children, but I'm really trying consciously to establish an atmosphere of love and acceptance as well as correction, and correct judiciously and intentionally, with clear communication as to eternal laws and societal standards rather than "Me mom, you kid, you do!" I'm trying to find my middle ground. But everyone keeps telling me I'm too lenient. I'm almost scared to ask for your thoughts, but I would love to hear how you apply the proving of contraries to parenting. If you're ever looking for a supplemental topic for something. 😂
EDIT: Sorry, long comment. I've got some tough kids to parent, so maybe what I am missing is my own parenting "thesis" or "dissertation." Maybe it would help me explain to myself and others why I make the choices I do. And help me discover my lack of logic where it does exist. Thanks for talking about purposes and writing, Brother Halverson.

I found an interesting note on genealogy in the Book of Mormon index. The listing for Ishmael identifies him as an "Ephraimite". However, NO WHERE in the Book of Mormon is Ishmael identified as an Ephraimite! I later learned that this identification was made within the lost 116 pages of the original manuscript. I wonder how many nuggets of knowledge were passed down from the lost 116 pages?

Probably weird question: What was the lure for Ishmael's sons? Was it ultimately for a chance for adventure or to stay with family? They had no marriage prospects of their own ( other than inter family relationships! ). Was it to follow God's will? We learn later that they were'nt necessarily of that persuasion as they were in on the rebellion initially against Nephi.

I gave this book, and the Church two years in the Ohio Cleveland Mission from November 1990 to 1992. I defended the faith with fervent testimony concerning the truthfulness of the Gift & Power of God in the Urim & Thumim. I was bold in opposition to any who who speak about seer stones, and of others aspects the Church has now embraced / endorsed. What those outside have had to say hasn't had to change. The Church keeps weaseling away from historicity claims and publish apologetic propaganda. We see archeology evidences for the Bible, everything about Mesoamerica & Heartland models keeps failing. My relationship with the Book of Mormon is comparable to the Screwtape Letters or any other work of fiction. It's not the world that broke the book for me like it has been the Church, and the evidence now embrace that Joseph Smith scryed the Book, with a seer stone in his hat. Emotions aren't enough. In time evidence must come forth to certify faith and foster future growth. It seems the 2Nephi 9:34 Wo unto the liar for he shall be thrust down to hell is an ironic self incriminating verse for a "Prophet" who couldn't see around corners when including Dutero-Isaiah in a work with an impossible kind of beginning from nearly 100 years before Dutero-Isaiah was written. Maybe someday the leadership of the Church will stop lying about the Book of Mormon- including pulling the rug out from under those who fervently believed.

I do find it interesting that the whole book acts as a testimony from the branch of Israel that is Joseph’s lineage, yet it does not do the Hebrew practice of proving it by giving a genealogy. If the Bible acts as the stick of Juda, and the BOM acts as the stick of Joseph, it would be very valuable real estate to give that genealogy. Ether does just that later in the book. I know the Book of Mormon is true. I just find that to be curious.

Something to think about. I do not believe the families of Ishmael and Lehi were strangers, nor their respective children strangers. I believe they already knew each other, or Ishmael's children wouldn't have been so willing to leave everything behind and go down into the wilderness with perfect strangers. You would have had rebellions among them the same way Laman and Lemuel rebelled about leaving everything behind and going down into the wilderness to perish. It would also explain why Laman and Lemuel did not rebel again going back down into the wilderness-because the families already knew each other. And was it just a coincidence that Ishmael had five unmarried daughters to match the four unmarried sons of Lehi and Zoram, and that there was one unmarried son of Ishmael and one unmarried daughter of Lehi? It sounds like pre-existent planning to me that they should all grow up knowing each other. :·) And this seemed to play itself out in the rebellion of Laman and Lemuel on their way back to Lehi, so far as those who eventually sided with Nephi, including the one unmarried son of Ishmael. Interesting, though, that it mentioned Ishmael's wife, but not Ishmael himself, as siding with Nephi.

Jared and Other Unshaken Saints, I am struggling with something that I think is a good point. Why does Nephi and others in Old Testament Book of Mormon times have such a clear knowledge of Jesus Christ? They know his name exactly where he is from. 1 Nephi 11:13. I understand that maybe a lot of this was given to Nephi after arriving to the New World, however nothing else in the Old Testament is as specific as what Nephi has. It just seems far too specific for Nephi and the subsequent writers of the Book of Mormon to know nearly everything about the Savior, while the biblical prophets had far less to go on.
I suppose they weren't going to be in Jerusalem and it required far more faith to believe he would be born on the other side of the world.
Do you have something I could look to or study up on to understand this better? Could you address it in one of your videos? If you already have someone please point me in that direction.
Thank you for all you do.

It's a great question. I can only give some honest thoughts. 1) I think you may have already hit on part of it... perhaps God gave them more for various reasons, like the distance--faith thing. 2) If God knew the Bible would be missing some things, and that the Book of Mormon was meant to reestablish some of those plain and precious truths, he needed to give it. 3) I personally believe the ancient old testament prophets knew more about Christ than made it into our present day bible. As an example, the Pearl of Great Price shows us that Moses and Enoch experienced some powerful, personal visitations not recorded in the Bible (eg. Moses 1). 4) The Brother of Jared saw all things (Ether 3:20-21,25) while still in the old world but was commanded to seal them. I suspect he wasn't the only one commanded to keep some things vague or hidden. 5) Peter, James, and John were told to remain very quiet about what happened on the mount of transfiguration (Matthew 17:9) for a while, and doesn't seem like it was ever recorded in the bible after Christ's death. 6) I find it interesting that so many bible prophets veiled their revelations in symbols (Isaiah, John the revelator, etc.) as if God wanted it that way for ancient Israel and modern day mainstream Christianity.
Just some thoughts. I really hope and pray your prayers, searching, and pondering bear unspeakable fruit. Godspeed my brother.

Couldn’t part of the reason as to why they went to Ishmael to marry his family and come with them on their journey because they were related? Historically and anthropologically the “desert people” would marry from the family of their paternal uncle. So Lehi and Ishmael’s families would likely be related. Perhaps part of the reason they tried to gain favor in Ishmael’s sight is because Lehi was a “visionary man” and perhaps Ishmael was embarrassed of his nephew/relative? I feel like there is cultural evidence from the history of the people in Jerusalem at the time to show that Ishmael wasn’t a random pick. My feeling is that God prepared Ishmael and blessed him with daughters in preparation for Lehi’s family’s children.

1:17 That's a nice imagining, but it's not what the scriptures say. "...it came to pass that the LORD SPAKE UNTO HIM again, saying that it was not meet for him, Lehi, that he should take his family into the wilderness alone; but that his sons should take daughters to wife, that they might raise up seed unto the Lord in the land of promise.
2 And it came to pass that THE LORD COMMANDED HIM that I, Nephi, and my brethren, should again return unto the land of Jerusalem, and bring down Ishmael and his family into the wilderness."
