Please never think you are being too through and making these lessons too long and need to shorten them! Now if you feel they are too long, taking away from your family, then I understand! But me being selfish, I love being in scriptures with you and having you take as much time as you can!

I loved the prior format and was concerned about loosing content due to the new format/relationship with Faith Matters. Glad to find out my worries were unwarranted.
Note: The interplay of polarities is a major interest in my world view. I find that the polar opposites never "balance" which could create homeostasis...stillness...but as the philosophy of some state: " out of extreme yin, yang is born and out if extreme yang, yin is born." Thus the movement between opposites continually moves....ahhhhh!.....

Knowing a bit about compasses, I pondered the two spindles. In an orienteering compass there is an arrow called, The Direction of Travel and then there's the needle that points to magnetic north. Once the bearings are turned using the Bezel, then you turn while holding the compass with The Direction of Travel arrow pointing away from you, and keeping turning until the red half of the needle lines up with the Direction of Travel arrow. Possibly, the two spindles had to be lined up with each other before they had a true direction of travel. Just a possibility. I love, love, love your style of teaching and what you teach! I am truly growing up in God because of your teachings with the help of the Holy Spirit! Thank you. Bless you.

I have totally been thinking about the relationship between the letter of the law and Spirit of the Law! Ive never thought about that with the Lihaona and the iron rod. So good !Thank you so much for your lessons! I really appreciate how you apply it to life in such a personal way and steadfast joyfully! You have a way that truly blesses and enlightens and helps me esp with stories I don’t understand.
I have to say though I miss your introduction video 😉 it has come to mind several times esp recently that I will not be shaken it moves me in a way I know other your introduction with people, encountering, Christ, and hearing the sounding voice to not be shaken 😊that is getting ever more true.

1:21:33 I had a beautiful insight given to me by the Spirit this week. I’m trying to work on healthy boundaries and have been pondering this for a while. The Lord loves all of us. His commandments are HIS healthy boundaries. They aren’t punishments, they aren’t harsh; they are His requirements if we want to be with Him and have access to Him. He loves us even when we choose to not accept His boundaries; however, He won’t allow whatever we want (because He loves us) and still have access to Him and His space. What a wonderful insight ❤️ and is the answer to those who think that just because He loves us, He’ll accept any old behavior.

I heard an analogy once that has always stuck with me to help illustrate. Commandments are like the string of a kite, at first, it looks like the string is holding it down, keeping the kite from going higher. But, as soon as you let go of the string, the kite falls. The more string there is, the higher the kite can actually go.

I have followed you since the very beginning and besides saying that I have studied the scriptures with you every week and have learned so much, like being able to understand symbolism and ancient cultures that enable me to know and understand the books of scripture as I’ve never been able to during all my years of study and discussions in classrooms of instruction. You are my teacher and my friend and I learn from your verse by verse, digressive style and I dint like “Warter skiing” over verses as you are currently trying out. I may return to yourBook of Mormon classes from 4 years ago, even though I know it so well over the last 35 years of regular study. I like to submerse myself in scripture at least an hour a day and take the time to ponder my notes and reread chapters even. All my good hopes and prayers for you and your sweet family, you go above and beyond to help so many people like me becomeCelestial minds and hearts. Brother Halverson, I love your lessons and thank you for them. I completely agree that Poll’s published sacrament meeting talk was divisive; and I appreciate you pushing back on that. Though not a big deal, but I do have a technical disagreement with using the Iron Rod and Liahona to represent dichotomies (like, letter of law vs spirit of law, lower gospel living vs higher, etc.). I’ve written about this at length elsewhere, but to be (relatively) brief, the problem is that the Iron Rod and Liahona are not themselves mutually exclusive--based on how they are used and defined in scriptures.
The Iron Rod and the Liahona do not even belong to the same category of objects: the Iron Rod was a part of Lehi’s dream and only has representative, symbolic meaning, but the Liahona was a tangible object. The Iron Rod symbolizes the “word of God” and whoso would “hearken” and “hold fast” will “not perish” (1 Ne 11:25 and 15:24). The Liahona is physical a “compass” with “two spindles” and sets forth plain writing about the “ways of the Lord” from time to time (1 Ne 16:10, 16, 27-29).
If you look at Lehi's family, the Liahona is only one example of how the word of God came to them--along with the Spirit, angels, brass plates, etc., the Liahona was a subset of the symbolic meaning of the Iron Rod for them. Hence, treating them as dichotomous and asking which is better or higher, is like asking whether it is better to prune and nourish the olive tree (Jacob 5:11-12, 64) or to testify of the atonement of Jesus Christ (Jacob 7:12). The latter is an instance of the former.
If I assert, for example, that the Iron Rod represents the written word of God (and not the Holy Ghost), then this means that the “word of God” on the path to the “love of God” consists only of following the written word of prophets and that listening to the Holy Ghost is unnecessary-which, of course, is untrue. Correspondingly, if I assert that the Liahona represents the Holy Ghost only (and not the written word of God), then I am at least ignoring the written words on the Liahona. (Of course, Alma, President Benson and many other modern prophets also use the Liahona as a type, but in doing so, I can't find that they ever seek to treat it as exclusive from the Iron Rod.)
Thus, using the Iron Rod and Liahona to represent mutually exclusive concepts does not work scripturally. Or it only works if you create a caricature of each--a version of each that ignores certain scriptures. This appears to be what you have done here with your charts. Again, not a big deal. And it is certainly possible that I am wrong about this and I would be happy to be corrected and learn better. But, in an attempt to be helpful, I wanted to mention at least what I think is straying from the scriptures.
Thanks again. I do love your lessons!

The one spindle pointed true north (Christ). A merchant Prophet would be familiar with that. The other spindle directed them the way they should go (holy spirit). We need perspective in this journey.

Each spindle could be a representation of the faith of Lehi and his wife. They had to be united in order that the spindles would both point in the same direction. The Lord worked through the Father and the Mother so that out of the mouth of two witnesses you may know the truth of all things.
If they were not United. The spindles pointed in different directions. Not knowing which one to follow.

One of the things that come to my mind about the need for a liahona is that some of the travelers needed a physical guide to lead them. They needed to be able to see something instead of relying on someone else's inspiration. Sometimes we need a physical sign along with the spiritual ones. Although each work through inspiration.
I also really like Bro. Halverson's explanation of progressive learning. I have loved hearing your teachings for the last 4 years. Thanks for your time and attention to sharing with us.❤

Lehi counsels him in 2 Nephi 1:28 to follow Nephi, which he does, going with Nephi when they are forced to separate themselves as recorded in 2 Nephi 5:6. But what I find beautiful is the final reference to Sam in Alma 3:6, where he is called a "just and holy" man, along with Nephi. There is so little that we know about this stalwart brother, but we at least have some indication of his faith.

    Luv your lessons Bro H.
I am very blessed to have a job where I can spend 3 -4 hrs a day listening to your wonderful lessons (and gospel based tlks books etc) while driving across our beautiful country.
Forgive me for running on but.... (guess where I learned that)? Haha
While on my mission, I had 2 Presidents. The first was German, who insisted we live the mission rules with exactness. (Letter of the law) ie. Music: only MO Tabs or hymns. Elders were constantly bending the " commandments".
My second President came in and taught that there was no such thing as "Spirit of the Law" no where in scripture is that mentioned. He taught there is only the law and how we choose to live it... by the letter. Or with the spirit or how the spirit dictates. Example, we were to choose for ourselves what type of music inspired us and invited the spirit to be with us or pushed it away. Results: as a mission, we all stepped up trying to live this higher law. Choosing for ourselves. (Iron rod vs Liahona) this is the 1st time in my life I have ever left a comment on anything, ever! Throughout your lesson, I felt compelled to share my 2nd Mission president's lesson. It has inspired me to strive to live an even higher law ever since.
(Hope I didn't embarrass myself with my weakness in articulationing) sic...

Chapter 17:40 says that "...he loveth those who will have him to be their God." It seems to me, after also reading other scriptures and talks by apostles, that God's love is not unconditional, as you stated, but rather conditional. I would love to hear your thoughts and insights on this matter. It's a topic that I have been trying to understand better for some time and I love to hear other people's thoughts on this.

The primary purpose and objective of both ‘letter’ and ‘spirit’ of the law is to lead us to or draw us closer to Christ. When we find ourselves weighing (or rationalizing) where we or others are at between the two, remembering this and using it as a measuring stick of sorts (as long as we are being brutally honest with ourselves) can be very helpful. Is my perceived position drawing me closer to Christ? If not, I should humble myself and reconsider my position.

Makes me also think too… has the church changed the ensign magazine to the liahona for another reason? Maybe not but that hidden meaning might show us we need to master this next level that is more liahona like. Taking the spirit as our guide in everything we do

I think the "would not" (re: 1:00:00) is more than that. They were angry Nephi was receiving inspiration, they were jealous, they were the older brothers they saw it as their place - not his. If they admitted Nephi was receiving direction and inspiration from The Lord, they'd have to look harder at their own shortcomings in that mirror that Nephi was worthy - and they weren't. And they didn't want to do that.

I struggle with a concept that you've brought up on several occasions, which is that "Gods love is unconditional", and hope that you could clarify this idea. I hear this concept repeatedly in sacrament meeting, sunday school, and priesthood meetings. I am confused because this appears to be the general consensus of the church members, but not of the brethren.
As I search for "unconditional love" in the gospel library, the only references I find teach that although God does love all his children, the word unconditional does not appear in the scriptures, and that the higher levels of love He feels for us are conditional. Two addresses that touch on this doctrine are below.
"Divine Love", Russell M. Nelson, Feb 2003
"The Everlasting Covenant", Russell M. Nelson, Oct 2022
Am I understanding these wrong, or is God's love in fact conditional?
Thanks again for your time and consideration.

I agree that commandments are keys to blessings but I think Nephi was talking about his new wife as his chief blessing when he said he had been blessed exceedingly.

I just had the thought that Bountiful could be compared to Nauvoo. "Lord, can't we just stay here?" However, the "Lehites" and the Saints needed almost an impenetrable separation in order to become what God needed them to be.

Thought I’d share a contrary insight I found for myself:
Nephi’s bow broke, snapped. Too rigid. Laman and Lemuel’s lost their spring and were not effective. Too loose.
Another contrary to prove. For a bow to be affective it needs to be not too rigid and not too loose. Nephi corrects and is LED to the right material. Laman and Lemuel stay with their unproductive bows.
Can be applied to the “iron rodders” and “liahona” saints or letter and spirit of the law type people.

I never noticed the conflict between the rod and the liahona. I have an image in my brain of somebody holding the rod in one hand and the ball in another, and now the fact that those who "cling" to the rod are more likely to feel ashamed later and leave. Because they cling on with both hands - no way to hold on to the liahona as well.

The second spindle has to point in a known direction (like North) so the liahona can be properly oriented. Without that proper orientation the guiding spindle would be useless.

Just think if they would have went ahead and sent Laman and Lemuel back to Jerusalem. Their future would have been so much better in the land of promise and plenty. It certainly would have shortened The Book of Mormon because there would not be so many wars and contentions with the other side. It would have been only nephrites and no blame the nights. But we always have to have opposition in all things. Right, love your neighbor as yourself❤

Why two spindles? They make the sign of the compass. On a liahona, or compass. Why? What other royal emblem did they receive? A sword. Where do we see a sword in one hand and a royal orb in the other (reference royal coronations in Europe and ancient courts). Why were. These symbols passed onto Joseph? What kingdom was he establishing? Where do we receive these signs?

Good morning, Brother…I’m hoping you remember me/my son Connor…you told Connor in that phone call a study/experiment in recreating the Jaredite journey…I have tried so hard to remember the specific details, could you tell me again? I’m keeping a record for myself of all of the BoM proof of authenticity and I wanted to include that.
Also…during Old Testament year, you told a story of how you explained to someone not of our faith the reasons why not everyone can enter the temple….I have a coworker/friend who has been asking more and more questions about the Gospel and because I’m always gone on Thursdays (I work in the temple from 6 am-4 pm) the topic of the temple has come up…with her daughter getting ready to be married, the subject of it being so “excluding” has come up and I’ve wracked my brain trying to remember how you worded it because it was the PERFECT way to explain it without making it feel more excluding! But short of remembering exactly which lesson and trying to skim through it….I’m really hoping you remember and can retell that to me also? I know you’re busy…just when you get a Minute, I’d be so grateful

1:04:24 v19 from my view point, L & L are still emotionally immature (lacking ability to see/feel/have empathy from a view point outside of their own). There might be some narcissism behavior: by invalidating Nephi, to get what they want… what they want possibly: to stay, to potentially have the opportunity to return to Jerusalem… by invalidating (questioning Nephi’s state of mind & saying he is “lacking judgment”) discredits him… therefore they can safely not do what they don’t want to do: construct a ship & get what they want… to stay

Something came to mind this week as I was pondering about chastening. We don’t really know in this instance (end of 1 Nephi 16) what the chastening was like in terms of tone or the words that were spoken. Most people don’t respond well to scolding, so it would be odd for Laman to repent afterwards if it was a scolding tone. I then tried to think of examples in the scriptures where we do hear what the Lord has to say when chastening those who need it, and the first thing that came to mind was Jesus with His disciples. They usually seemed to receive gentle rebukes or subtle hints that they needed to fix something. I wonder if we just imagine in our heads that the exceeding chastening in 1 Nephi 16 was harsh and hard to bear, but in reality, it was gentle, but firm. I’d be curious to know other thoughts on this.

      He addressed this idea …
talking about the need to approach in a way that the Holy Ghost can do the work- (so HE can pierce the heart.) especially if that heart is hard…
To not give the angry/offended etc… a reason to JUSTIFY their leaving or anger/ or whatever reasons- for their emotion…
He showed how Nephi let the Lord do the chastising in some cases…
It’s not until the really hard hearts needed more extreme nudges…
That storms, calamities, may be needed to try to bring them around (and those were administered by God)
I find it interesting how I like Nephi would need to PRACTICE these techniques the Lord has shown him…
I find myself not as calm when chastising when I was a younger parent… now as I’m older… still not perfect- but I’m much better at it (if I have to)

Knowing what I know of physical and spiritual witnesses I can’t match it with the analogy of the iron rod and the Liahona.
Remember I told you I need both physical and spiritual witnesses to keep my testimony strong. Well in my study of witnesses I realized that Le his direction was strictly spiritual and the brothers were having trouble accepting it as truth. The Liahona was a physical proof that the direction was from God not of Lehi or Nephi’s ideas.
The Book of Mormon was printed and in the hand of members before the church was organized. As physical proof that Joseph was truly a prophet.
I love 1st nephi. It contains so much that is the total base of the entire Book of Mormon. Even though they were never public knowledge.
As you mentioned there are multiple themes in the Book of Mormon. That creates an incrediblely difficult to write by one person but is a natural result of a work written by multiple people

The other said this will take only 10 minutes and we’re going to do it before we leave. And did. Both were being obedient to laws just different ones. One from the rod the other of the Liahona 😊

"Wander, wander die." It's a phrase Brother Halverson has used often to describe the Israelites' sojourn in the wilderness. Because of their hard hearts and stiff necks, a whole generation wandered in the wilderness and died, never coming to the land of promise.

1 Ne 17:20 "...our women have toiled, being big with child; and they have borne children in the wilderness and suffered all things save it were death; and it would have been better that they had died before they came out of Jerusalem and suffered these things."
Would those women say they would rather have died than become mothers in adverse circumstances? Did they value personal ease and comfort over the souls they brought to Earth and nurtured? Did they wish their children dead or to have never been born? I think not, unless those women were stricken with the same shallow spirituality, selfishness and angry, murderous tendencies as their husbands, who joyed in the sufferings of the righteous. .

I look at the lds are as those of king Noah, or the Israelites of Moses. We are in Babylon are those flooding in (migrants) Maybe those more worthy of the chosen land, in our time. We are His chosen today but are we as His chosen but have we all chosen to be His elect. That is what the prophet is eluding to when he said those without the guidance of the Holy Ghost you will not make it spiritually, ( wiped off at His coming. Arise and awake and put on the whole armor of God.

When the Spirit guides and directs teachers to convey the messages that uplift, inspire and expand the intelligence, who are we to restrict, yea put time limitations on Deity because we feel that we are time deficient. It becomes obvious what the 'good parts' are when we are more focused on the lesson and its attendant life experiences along with those of others whether personal or scriptural. Everyone has an opinion but few have the Spirit
