I've been watching your videos and would love to get your advice on what to do with my thick hair. Is there anyway I can send you a picture? (They always say....you never know until you ask! 😉)
Fenugreek seeds gave me my hair back. I had 75% hair loss after covid. Researched and tried Fenugreek seeds. After 3 weeks I had new growth all over. Go natural. Use Fenugreek ❤
You seem to be ignoring face shape. Those with long faces look better with some volume of hair on the sides. It's not just about how the hair itself looks but also about how the whole face and head looks. On the reverse, if you have a wide face, that same hair style will look extra bad on you. The one photo you have of the older woman with a long face and shortish grey hair swooped up on top IMO is not that ideal for her in particular, the hair itself looks nice but it does not go well with her longer face. It accentuates the length of her face even more and gives her a cockatoo appearance. That hair would look good on a perfectly shaped face but it's not idea for a long face.
The hair cut I want to see is the person having their hair cut actually has thin fine hair. I want see what you come up with. As to style and products you use. Because nearly every time it will be said she has fine hair, but she has quite a bit. So let's see true skill make something out of very little.
Would you want people telling you you shouldn't get tattoos? I have tattoos and people say I shouldn't have done it, but it's my body and I do whatever the heck I want. ☮️🧘♀️
Thankyou for this video. I went through chemo and lost all of my hair. I'm also a hair stylist...no such thing as former...I needed ideas on how to grow my hair back out! It was shocking to lose my hair and wigs are a God send but now I have a better idea on how to trim it as it is has grown out a couple inches. I will keep the back short and cut the sides as you suggested, graduating up toward the top. Also, will trim the back shorter because as it grows out it is looking shaggy along the nape. I will also grow the top out a little longer than before. My hair is thick and wavy and you don't know what you've got till it's gone. Just to let you know, I kicked cancers butt!!! And now I'm looking forward to better things ahead!😊 11:43
I was skeptical about this video. I thought it was going to be someone talking about their bias against certain hair styles. But no, you nailed it! The problem I have is trying to get stylists to give me the same haircut every time. Or to recreate the same haircut they gave me previously. THAT is near impossible.
When I find a good stylist I stay with her. After your visit take photos of yourself so you will have them to show on your next visit or to a new stylist. Stylists love when you can show them a picture of what you want.
I am 75 and I wear my hair in a layered pixie-type style. On a previous video you recommended cutting the back in an M shape. I took a screenshot and brought it to my hair stylist. She said that was a terrific idea and we modified it a bit for my hair texture. It looks and feels so much better now, really emphasizes the volume and lift I am going for when I style it at home. Thanks for the tips. You have a new fan!
Thank you Justin! I feel like sending your video to every hair salon in my town! Since the pandemic I got so used to cutting my own hair that I still haven't found the courage to go back to professional hair stylists. The reason being that on leaving the hair salon I have to put on sun glasses and a hat so I won't get recognized on my way home! I have ended up with puffy "granny hair" so many times I just got fed up! It can actually be difficult for someone with silver hair to get a flattering and stylish cut because I've been told by hair stylists that I'm "too old" for some of the cuts I like. Why can't we clone you and have a Justin in every town and city in the world???
I also am 70 years old and have been doing hair for 45 years. I've always helped my clients with how to do their hair at home. If they can't do what I do to them they will not be happy. Also, for the ones that want/need to do their color themselves at home I help them with how to do that as well. Helping them builds confidence so they won't be worried about what they can do with their hair and also builds trust in the stylist. :) Love your content!!
I love this! You nailed it on the head. I’ve always thought that teaching clients about their hair and how to manage it it’s always the most important part of being a hairstylist. If you think of the clients needs first, sometimes that means teaching them how to, do things at home to fit within their time or budget. To me that doesn’t lose clients, that builds trust which is why I’m sure you have a really solid client retention rate as well. I always appreciate the feedback! Thanks a ton for the support!
It’s nice to hear you help your clients learn to do their hair at home and change it if they can’t. If finally stopped going to my stylist because she wouldn’t listen to what I told her ( I gave her way too many years). Even after I would tell her while my hair looked good after I left, it wouldn’t still look that way even by the time I got home and even worse for the next month when I did it myself.
@@danicave4564 I know what you mean. It's all about listening and communication, and making sure the client knows that I know what their hair concerns are.Happy clients, happy business.
@@danicave4564 I understand completely. At 64 ; was letting my hair grow long and even for 2 years. From 42 to 63 ,had short tight styles. Which was wash and go. No hair blowing or styling. In the 1970s. I had the Cher look. Then my hair starts turning Grey (salt & pepper), nice looking highlights. Not realizing that my hair texture changed. Show the girl a picture; thinking that's a nice cut. Remember; the customer is always right. After the cut ; she was using a medium round brush and then a hot iron. I said: I don't use those items. She said, it's for me to see the cut. It came out nice. But the next day; I wanted to cry. It looked uneven and horrible. When I try to style it. So now I'm letting it grow. And find another style. Which can suit me and my hair. Blessings for you and family. Greetings from Puerto Rico.
That’s beautifully refreshing. I’ve been cutting and coloring my own hair since I was in school. I just turned 40 and bleached my hair for the first time, almost no hair fall because I did crazy amounts of research. The last time a hairdresser touched my head I went in for a trim for my baby shower and she blow dried my curly hair straight! I was so mad!! Omg! Then when I asked her to put my curls back in my hair she got a 1.5in barrel curling iron and put big barrel curls in my hair… The manager ended up coming over because I was in tears, and asked me what was wrong. I said she straightened my damn hair, nobody ever asked for that! Wasn’t nobody else in this place but they needed to rush me out after trying to upsell and when I refused they STILL charged me almost $90!! I have MAJOR trust issues with hair stylists…
This is just the video I needed. My 75 year old mom has put me in charge of her hairstyles (I'm a former stylist). I was thinking exactly along the lines you presented, and with your video I got a couple good pics to show mom so she doesn't get anxious when I'm giving her a new style. Thank you!
Nice! I know exactly how it goes! Family can be some of the toughest clients. Being able to show them where you're going is a big deal! Thanks for watching! As I mentioned, I always feel flattered when stylists watch!
Tell your Mom that I said she is very blessed to have you. I am 75 and I have to style my own hair between salon visits. Lately I am really into discovering volumizing and texturizing products to give my baby fine hair more body and fullness.
Would LOVE a video on great hairstyles (including a bob cut) for longer foreheads, as mentioned in the comments. Your teachings along with the visuals and the information sticks for me. Yay! Thank you!
Great video! I have always had short hair and very rarely have I gotten a hair cut that I am seeking…I always have to mess with it and use tons off product that mostly doesn’t help…so frustrating! Wish I could find a hair stylist that has the hair insight to give me what is right for me! That would be a miracle! Thank you Justin! Love your videos!!
Just love your videos! Learning so much. I’m 74 and throughout the years when I’d go in for a trim or hairstyle most stylists would look at my fine hair and say “there’s not much we can do with hair like yours”. So I let them cut whatever they “thought best” and very rarely did it turn out well for me. Now I know what to say and ask for and liking my cuts better! Thank you
I’ve always hated my thin baby fine hair. I went to the best stylist in Dallas (supposedly) for help. He picked up pieces of hair from different heights then watched it fall down. Arrogantly he made a face, grunted with disgust then said, I can’t cut this. There was a line of women waiting to sit in his chair. That made me feel ugly for years.
@Peggy O’Reilly' // don't let that get to you. I'm 60, and also have baby fine thin hair and have gone to (the best of the best), so they claimed. I always walked away with tears. Those stylist are used to people walking in with thick, luscious hair, which means they're really not good stylist at all, but just used to cutting one type of hair. (With the exception of Justin Hickox course). I decided to walk into a stylist recommended and it (wasn't a fancy dancy place) but was wowed by the stylist. She said that instead of putting her money in a nice salon, she decided her money would go into ongoing learning. I walked out with a blunt cut right above my shoulders, and my hair looks so healthy and voluminous. I'll never go to anyone else but her. I'm also in Texas, but the Texas Hill Country. Hang in there. I know you'll find the right place. Besides, that's why we watch Justin's great TH-cam videos. It's helps us not only learn the correct language when we do go to a stylist, but what to do and what not to do.
Great tips Justin. As a 60 year old I appreciate advice on what to look for in a hair cut. I have been cutting my own hair since covid and I always want my hair to look its best and so I appreciate the detailed explanations in your videos. Thank you😊
I finally grew my layers out and all my hair is several inches below shoulders and soft blunt I have some bangs. I LOVE my style now as I can wear it up, down , ponytails, buns I can do so much more!
THANK YOU! I have baby hair, and life is too short to try to make it look like more hair every day! I really appreciate the 'CUT IN SHAPE' demonstration.
Loved this video 💕 I’m 76 and finally grew my hair long 6 yrs ago. It was simple and easy and fun to have a side ponytail draped to the front 🤗. But after a while my baby fine hair was flat and not taking a perm well. I realized that I needed to go really short to have my hair work well with my face. I found your “5s” to be soo very true for me. Thank you! I now recognize the problems 😘
That is awesome! I'm so glad this helped! I'm glad you went for not just a length, but a shape within the length that would look best on your face. That's huge!
I was considering having the first style you showed, for the reasons stated, because l would have been giving up long hair. My hairdresser talked me out of it, but didn’t really give a reason other than l would regret it. I found this extremely helpful.
Thanks for explaining all this. A few of the things you pointed are what I have experienced when I have gotten a haircut I was not very happy with from the beginning or as it grew out. The past few years I just feel like I am not 100 percent happy with the cuts I have gotten. This gives me things to keep in mind when I talk to my stylist. Thanks so much.
You articulated the bad stuff really well. What you said fits my experience with my medium and sometimes short(er) hair. I find that my face has changed as I've gotten older. Yikes, where did these jowls come from. How should I keep my basic style but not emphasize the jowls. Thanks, Justin!
Thank you so much for this video. I’m 73 years old and have had the same cut for over 20 years. Everything you addressed is what I asked a stylist to do but never got. Now I know why. I thought I wasn’t getting what I wanted was because they were too young and didn’t know what a shag was. Now I have to rethink my new style. I love you immensely, you’re the guru of hair ❤
Thank you so much! You're WAY too nice! Keep in mind though, at the end of the day, the most important thing you can do is what makes YOU feel good. If you like something and I don't recommend it, completely ignore me...my opinion is not THAT important. :)
I am your age, I have a bob that covers my ears with a slight bang. I would like to have the shag or French Cut as Josee Miller reminded me (see his comment above). Sadly I do not want to show my ears which do not have a fold on top, so I must cover them.
I do disagree with you on the age of the stylist making a difference. My stylist was an older woman whom had done hair for 40 yrs. She gave me a pixie from hellomg. I took the time to explain I wanted a Bixie and what that was. She cut my hair extremely short also. I don't think how old she was had anything to do with it. Some people just cut hair better. She tried to sell me products to hold and shape. Beware if they do this. Also I couldn't see the back well in the mirror bec. of strategically placed bottles sitting on her station. Tells me it ain't the first time she ruined someone's hair. 😢
@PO:: Respecting your opinion, however as to young stylists one of the best I have had was a young girl and her haircuts were amazing but she moved so often from salon to salon I finally gave up following her.. On that note; I have paid high end prices where my hair has been butch*red whereas the hairdresser I now go to (and have been for a few years) is one that I found at a no appointment/walk-in establishment and she is totally amazing. i.e.: Give her a photo and she can replicate it but at the same time discuss its attributes or otherwise and no matter the style the result has been easy maintenance because of her cuts IMO. (BTW I'm 75 and she is 30 years old so is less than half my age.)
No. 5 is the huge problem I constantly receive and it’s horrible to style around. Btw, I am a hairstylist from the late 60’s and early 70’s. I can see the problem and explain how I want my hair cut but it doesn’t happen. Thank you Justin.
@@karyannfontaine8757I do my own coloring and trim hair cut around the nape, sides, and front. Then attempt to blend in the rest. I don’t have the right type of mirrors to do all of it so eventually I do go to a hairstylist. I live alone and don’t own my home so installing mirrors is not possible. I will say that I have taken a clippers to the back with success though. I was pretty proud of myself actually. I just don’t understand why it’s so difficult to leave that part of crown area longer. We were taught that basic principle.
Wow you just described what I couldn’t when I get my hair styled! It must be getting cut even all around because I have to try to adjust with styling and that’s just too much hassle so, on goes the ball cap! 🫤 I get a great cut occasionally that just works and is excellent and flattering then the next time….ugh! Sadly, in my experience, there aren’t that many stylists that understand the head shape and what each need to flatter the shape. 🤷🏼♀️
I hear you there! Usually when people have a haircut, that is super flattering, and really easy to style, it’s the shape in the cut that makes it happen!
Hey Justin, I like your new approach a lot… you seem more humble and more approachable. very very attractive I must say, I like how you explain the hairstyles and it’s lines. It makes it very clear, especially the analogies.
Thank you so much! I appreciate the feedback a lot! When you say approach, are you speaking of the topics or the fact that I'm filming inside vs outside?
@@justinhickox The fact that you’re softer, funnier, more open to comments, not so sensitive to negative comments, your great sense of humor. So I guess it doesn’t matter whether you’re inside or outside although the inside seems more cozy. Either way is fine as far as environment. I also like your illustrations because TH-cam is such a visual medium the illustrations and inserts help a lot in describing what exactly you’re talking about. Case in point, the woman with the black hair with straight across bangs, versus putting in wispy layers all the way across her bangs😀
Thank you! You're way too kind. It's funny you mention this now. Next Tuesday I have a new video going live. At the end, I respond to comments again. They're all snarky comments! LOL! They really don't offend me, I just think they're funny. Normally I want to add value by answering questions from the comments but I thought it would be fun to just read some of the aggressive ones, kind of like celebrities reading mean tweets, (in NO way am I claiming to be a celebrity!). I just love those videos! LOL
I just love your enthusiasm and your passion. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent. I really appreciate the time and energy you put into presenting us your great ideas and knowledge. Please continue as you are doing.
Hi me again. Well, after watching this, I went back to my stylist and explained exactly what you said about tapering the sides so she did just that, and I have to say I love the cut now No more bozo sides😊 Thank you so much for explaining things so clearly🙂 for the record it wasn't my stylist fault I wasn't explaining it right
This was so helpful! I went to a 40 something, very 'cutting edge' hair stylist and he gave me this short, sad, all one length hair cut. I was pretty depressed for about 8 months trying to grow it out. I'm so glad to understand what he did to my hair to make it look so bad! You have given me the words and know how to know how to ask for what I want and don't want. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
This happened to me! It was so bad that I never even took a picture of it. I paid a lot for that cut. He was an “edgy” guy with cool Instagram photos. I couldn’t believe what he did to me.
I have watched your show for a long time and always wished I lived in NE again where I grew up so I could come to your salon at least once ! Sadly I am too old to drive there from down here in the valley but enjoy your tips a lot, especially the one I saw today! Keep those old lady, thin, fine hair tips coming. At 87 I still want my hair to be flattering! Thanks, Doris
Thank you!! I let an amazing super short style grow out and hate it!! This answers why and what not to do at my next appointment, which is in 2 days!!! Going super short again but hopefully right this time!
@@justinhickox so thankful for this video and for you! I took suggestions and thoughts from you and now have a great super short style that works for me!! It is so easy and can be worn several ways!! Thank you again!!!!
I used to be a stylist. I’m a nurse now, but I agree with your observations on all of these. Particularly the all the same length cut. I was trying to see how my hair would do super short and accidentally did that to myself and I have VERY thick wavy hair. It looked like a rug. Then as it grew out, like a troll doll. It was an epic fail. I now wear it long, in a shag. I have a very unique natural color, a silvery platinum blonde so I just enjoy it long and let my beachy waves flow.
I've had 4 of those 5 hairstyles and agree 💯 with your assessment of the issues encountered when growing them out . They look great when first cut but after a month it's a total mess .
I actually love the first cut you put ,it's something that I have been growing for some time and I love how it grows out and transforms into longer length. Having hair peeking through baseball cap is soft to me . I still love watching even if I don't agree with you on this . The dreaded square bang every hairdresser wants to give is something else !
@@Teresa-ch3og I a little woman so I find it fits my tiny head . I find the longer in front and back seems to just be what my face shape needs. I love short hair but the neck on me just needs the hair so I can see it from the front.
Very helpful. Losing hair so your tip on what you are using is great. And my hair is thin and fine . Looking for a good cut. Great tips of what to stay away from
I've cut my own hair for years. I really liked the look of that last girl you said was too short (blonde). My hair is all layers only slightly longer than hers. With the help of gels, sprays and curling iron I always get compliments.
Hello. I love this video. I’m 60 years old. I have an undercut pixie. I wear my hair edgy in the front around my bang area. I love it. Thanks for the tips.
My first time and your video was great. Short and sweet and clear advice. My hair is thinning as I age and after cancer treatment 8 years ago. Thank you!!
I'm.75 and lucky to have silver hair. I had my hair cut short when I grew out the hair dye . I still.wear it short and love it. As long as its styled to suit your face I think long or short grey hair looks great..
Thank you for all your videos. They are very informative. I'm very glad I found you. I've been unhappy with almost every haircut I've received in the last 40 years. I've had no luck showing stylists photos of the styles I like. So, I would ask the stylist based on their professional opinion what style they would recommend. Based on my hair type, face shape, body shape, lifestyle, etc. I must be helpless and ugly. So far nothing. I've left my hair long and often wear it pulled back in a bun, like most older southeast Asian women.
My rule of thumb , when you see someone who has a great flattering cut , compliment them and ask who their stylist is ! Even if they have different hair thickness .
Hi . Thanks always for your hard work. need a topper for my casual up do. I need more volume at the top. Do you recommend any kind? Do I need real hair? I notice my hair looks better up, as I get older. I will not cut my hair 💇♀️, so an up do saves me. Of course, my hair is thin, so I need the topper to fit in my hair in the up do. Thank you 🙏 Justin🎉
I am so happy I found you! I’ve been so afraid to Go to the salon because of a horrible past experience. After listening I’m going to find someone to give me the cut I need. Thanks!
Same here, Terri - I brought pictures and was precise in my instructions as to what I wanted, but he still kept giving me that damned old lady haircut! After the third time, I went somewhere else. I don’t know if it’s ego, or that they think they know best, but they need to listen to their customer. I may be a senior lady, but I know what I want my hair to look like.
I know why I watch your videos, cause I LOVE them. I just don't know why I felt the need to learn about short hair as I will never willingly cut my hair into something short 😂😅 Thank you for doing what you do.
Totally! It's defiantly a throwback to that. I actually don't hate that style, it can look great, it's just that it takes the right person or it doesn't work at all IMO.
I just had my first post chemo haircut and the stylist did 3 out of the 5 of these things.🤦♀️ It’s ok, it’ll grow out…eventually. Thanks for the video.
Sorry to hear that! It may be worth, if you haven’t already, getting some salon, recommendations, online or from a friend. Then contacting the salon and asking them what stylist excels in short hair hairstyles. Then book a consultation with them to see if you think they’d be a good fit. Hope that helps a little bit.
Justin, please please please give some tips on styles whilst growing out hair from bald. I've just finished chemo. Love your channel. Rebecca from Australia
Guess you should come & do my hair! LOL! Been wearing it at 3in for many years [35+] & I've been cutting it myself. Trying to grow it but hair tends to wave & curl around perimeter & not at back & crown. Possibly you can show some ideas for 4 in. hair and more so I can figure out how to style the growout. Im 68 & hair is medium thick & 98% white! Love my white hair too! Thank you for all the tips!
great video i used to be a hairstylist years ago i enjoy all of your videos and i am thinning a bit in the front of my hair and i am going to check into this mdhair looks interesting. I have mid to shoulder length hair i am older now and struggle between going mid to short length so i like seeing these videos they give me ideas for my own hair issues
Thank you for your critique on these hairstyles. I agree completely. The stylist I went to cut my hair a pixie cut. Which is what I wanted. It was Extremely short. Longer on the top. I was so disappointed with it I took biotin to try to grow the hair as quickly as possible. It was a learning experience.
Find your videos really helpful. I am older, have med long hair worn up and need a new style. Can you please recommend a style to balance out a double chin? I feel it has to have some height but would really appreciate your advice. Keep doing the good work, I'm sure you are helping many women out here.
Terrific points. Ive been thru all of these. Its difficult to find stylists who can cut short hair. If your hair is long you're safe. Otherwise, few can get their arms around short hair without it looking matronly.
Love this... I cut my own hair because my budget doesn't allow for a professional cut besides which when I have spent good $on a cut have found myself adjusting it afterwards. What you've said makes total sense... now if I can do it myself will be the big question! Any advice for do it yourselfers would be appreciated! Thanks!
As usual Justin, lots of knowledge behind the scenes. It’s been SO LONG since I had short hair. And, after seeing these reasons, I’m not planning to cut my mane short anytime soon.
Great examples. Each of these five cuts look like a helmet and a hard pass. So dated, yet I feel the hair schools still teach these as standard techniques. It took a while after I moved to find my stylist. Loved her from the get go. Listens, restates what she hears, offers suggestions, great results and has an excellent memory each time I return. She adapted to my strange hair pattern and texture right off the bat as she specializes in curly & wavy hair.
Thank you! You're spot on! Hairschools, unfortunately, are many times all about helping you pass the state board test and not how to utilize good technique. This is why I say, stylist should always go through an apprenticeship program. This also means, finding a salon WITH an apprenticeship program could help find a good stylist as they recognize that advanced training after school is critical.
@@justinhickox That makes sense. My daughter used to be behind the chair. Went to Gene Juarez is Seattle (before they sold), received a scholarship to their advanced training school which required a 2 year contract to work in their salon. She specialized in cuts and always told me to be patient with future stylists because of my “weird” hair texture and unruly nape. She eventually went on to be an ops and education director for a chain of hip barber shops in Austin and Houston. Now works for a software company used by salons and barbershops to do inventory management, schedule appointments, take payments, process reports. She has clients all over the country and loves it. She refuses to cut my hair. Lol.
@@MusicLover-sb7mo I wish I could find someone like your stylist. Are you in the Seattle area? I'm in AZ now, retired, after 25 yrs in the PNW. I'd gladly book an appt. w your stylist, though, when we go back up there to visit, because I have exactly the same issues you described.
Wow! I came across your video by accident, I wouldn't normally watch a video on this subject because none I have ever seen made sense, yours actually MADE SENSE!! I am literally shocked!😮 Congratulations!🎉 You have a new Subscriber!😊
I came thru cancer and kept it shaved for the 4 year process. Avoided chemo hair! Now I cut my own because I can't find someone to shape it like I prefer. Your vids are really helpful. I know what I like and you help me achieve it. You rock.😊
Right out of the box I can tell you that we are not going to agree. I love the shaggy pixie look. I've worn versions of it over the years and for me they grow out beautifully. As long as you keep the back trimmed it will be fine. I find it a flattering cut for any age and is a really great way to go from very long to short with far less trauma. Further, the illustrations you're using to demonstrate your point are often WIGS! I recognized several of the models who can be found on various wig site. Most notably a 3:21, You can't illustrate a problem hairstyle issue for real hair by using a model in a wig. The young woman in the blonde wig that you showed with an indentation in the hair (9:35) is not caused by the style but by the fact that the wig doesn't fit properly. Also, I truly dislike the cut on the older lady in the beige shirt (3:58 on the left). She's a beautiful woman, but that cut is too masculine and is emphasizing her long face and square jaw. Allowing the sides of that cut to be longer will fix the problem.
Great catch on the wigs! And how old are these pix? Thumbs down voted here….wear your hair the way you want to, ladies…this is just one more guys slanted opinion.
I totally agree except I love the lady in the beige shirts hair on her which is just further proof that different ppl find different things flattering and beautiful and that videos like this only serve to make women more insecure and profit off of it
Great tips, Justin! I also enjoyed the last part of the video where you addressed some comments from viewers. Have you ever done a video dedicated to only answering viewers questions or concerns? I would enjoy a video like that once in a while.
Thank you! I have thought about doing that but haven't done one yet. I figured I would introduce the questions into some current videos to see how people respond to it. If people like it, I would do a full video about it. Thanks for the suggestion!
Helpful message today, I have all those mistakes. I'm 64 and my hair has finally grown our well after a pixie during 2021. I will look in to the MDhair, I needed hormones for other reasons, though I was losing my hair, no bare patches, just losing it.
Boy I wish you were close to where I live! I've yet to find a stylist who'll give my fine/thin/limp hair a good pixie cut! They mess up, cut too much off and I end up with hair often SO short I can't do anything but shampoo and let it dry! No styling possible at that length! UGH! I've learned a lot since watching many of your videos. Thanks!
Thank you for your videos, Justin. I always look forward to them. (It was fun to see the “shag” styles again!) Reminiscent of Carol Brady!! God bless you.
Thank you! And yes, a throwback to the shag for sure! I HATED those when I was first learning to cut hair. The ones we learned on were SO bad! LOL. They've gotten MUCH better over the years...I WILL give them that!
I so appreciate all the great info you always provide. The example pics are of wigs..... would that be the reasoning for the hair being pulled forward towards the face? To conceal wig lines?
After a salon disaster, i followed another stylists suggestion of cutting it all off. I’m 64 and love the short hair but haven’t found the right style for it. Glad i found your channel to help me dial one in that works for me.
I loved this. I am from the UK and will be 70 this year. My hairdresser of 45 years sadly died and I just can’t get the style I used to have when she styled it. I find it difficult to let my current stylist watch your videos, he may get insulted so it’s hard.
You hit it on the nail about the devit in the back. I get this everytime I get my hair cut. My hair is fine and thick and it does better with a lot of layers. I do like the length short, but have fullness. I have a terrible time trying to get my point across with my hair.
This was very informative.Thank you. I am in the process figuring out what to do with my hair as it is growing out from full shave/bald. I wear short hair well but it is in an awkward stage now.
Very helpful; Justin. I’m blessed to have a great new short hairstyle I LOVE…but this last (periodic ) cut I mentioned a bit moredifficult achieving for height on top. Result…which u explained..is a “divot” area…so I know what to address ink next cut’s discussions. Super thanks!
Very interesting! My hair is somewhat naturally curly, long and I am losing it around my face, particularly on the right, both the forehead and side itself. I wear long bangs, ratted to make them appear fuller, but they don't always help. I am considering a short hairstyle but am concerned that it will look worse than it already does. (I'm over 80 so maybe it doesn't matter all that much, but I still want to look better).
We matter! Until the day we die, we matter. I'm 60 and noticed around 50 that I was invisible to people under 35. It was very hurtful. Even though I pass for 10-15 years younger-doesn't matter-I am invisible. America is so youth oriented - to the point of weirdness. European's love older women (and men) and are appreciative of them. Maybe we need more of that here, in the U.S. sorry for the long post-ageism is alive and well and is the last accepted discrimination against others. It needs to stop.
If you are not interested in hair replacement therapy Clairol does a root touch up that come in what looks like an eye shadow case. You just brush a little on to fill in the spaces. It is a powder. I have a coulick (I have no idea if that's spelled correct) that is also a solid grey steak . It looks like a bald spot and my red hair colors does not last long. I just touch it up and no one knows. For $7 it's worth a shot.
@@cerscil I have a product called Toppik. It's a root touch up spray that can also be used to cover bald spots. I have a double cowlick and even though my layered cut helps to keep the hair from separating, around the 3-4 week point when it needs to be trimmed and colored, the white roots make it look like a bald spot. Toppik not only covers the white roots it also adds texture and volume.
Hi. I'm 80 years young and let my fine, thin hair grow during Covid lockdown. I've kept it longish but now hair loss is a problem and of course the frizzy sideburn hair beside my ears is also a problem. I've always worn my hair short and wonder if going short again is an option with my very fine, even thinner hair. I wear it pulled up in a small bun, but this is also a problem because I have sticky out ears. I also have a flat crown so at least the bun or using a hair claw gives the illusion of not having a flat crown. I don't know of a hair stylist in Raleigh, NC I trust to give me a decent haircut or any who have the know how to deal with my peculiarities. Thanks for your informative videos.
Hi Justin. Thank you for the wonderful tips Must say, my hair actually looks a lot like yours! Am outdoors, biking, hiking, kayaking, in Central Florida, meaning I am dousing my head in water and jamming on a hat to keep cool. However, want a little style when not with a wet head. Great videos on short hair, and good ideas for an active person. I say yay! By the way, are you good in geometry , the angles in the lines of your hair cuts are amazing.... Jean Murray
I don’t deserve this level of expertise! Been cutting my own hair for sixty years and have made some real bad mistakes. Watched many videos when I was cutting my waist length hair to my chin ten years ago. I did tapering and it came out ok. I have lots of natural curls and waves so mine is not a precision cut. And now I know why the one length boy cut I got professionally done 30 years ago looked so bad. Will be viewing more of your videos.
#5. I’ve had every style of pixel over the years, and 5 is the worst for me. I have the divot conversation with my stylist at every appointment. I know you might advise that I change to another stylist, but we have a very long history. I think I’ll use your term “ divot” in hopes that it’s the solution. Thanks for such practical advice provided in this video.
Glad I can help! Usually since the divot is caused by the top being too short, try telling them that you want the top to grow out, NOT to touch it. Then just have the sides and back trimmed until the divot fills in.
Just found your channel! Subbed and liked -- hey, Justin, when we moved full-time into our tiny RV, I noticed my hair thinning like you shared. Turns out I used hats way more (keeping warm in the camper during winter while sleeping) and I also used hats/caps more because I spent way more time outdoors. We tend now to sleep with the heat off in our house, and I still have the habit of slapping a "nightcap" on my head, finding out that this contributes to thinning my hair during the winter!

Well, I am 74 and I HATE dealing with my hair, so I keep it really short and spiky and I love it and don't care what anyone thinks. It's MY hair. 🎉
Me as well
I also love my short hair. I’m 74 yrs young and next haircut going full spikey!
Don't watch his channel.🙄
All I can say is, I miss when women had their hair long.
Y'all look like a bunch of old Marine drill sargeants with those short haircuts.
Same age, same short spikey pixie, same attitude🎉
@@AngelinaX23 I have done that.
Thank you for this video 🎉 😊This is exactly what most hairdressers do wrong and what gives me an outdated look !
Omg! Then when I asked her to put my curls back in my hair she got a 1.5in barrel curling iron and put big barrel curls in my hair…
The manager ended up coming over because I was in tears, and asked me what was wrong.
@@justinhickox We never stop learning and I appreciate your advice. Best wishes!
Yay! Thank you!
Great tips! You are making real hair challenges approachable and fun to solve which is AWESOME!
I’m 67 with the “pixie haircut “ all the things you described people shouldn’t have , I don’t have. Thank god for my hairdresser 😊
I understand your pain...
Thank you
That is awesome! I'm so glad I can help! I really dislike the idea that stylist tell people that.
@@peggyoreilly7197 how awful of him. That’s disgusting. What a lovely helpful reply from Donna 👍

Great tips Justin. As a 60 year old I appreciate advice on what to look for in a hair cut. I have been cutting my own hair since covid and I always want my hair to look its best and so I appreciate the detailed explanations in your videos. Thank you😊
You're so welcome! I'm glad to hear I can help a bit. Thank YOU for the support on the channel!
Good job. Going to get my hair cut soon. You've helped so much. Love that you show older models.
Awesome! Thank you! Can't wait to hear how it turns out!
Justin! I really like your sense of humor and all the stuff you readily share with us. Very helpful, I've learned a lot!
😊
I was considering having the first style you showed, for the reasons stated, because l would have been giving up long hair. My hairdresser talked me out of it, but didn’t really give a reason other than l would regret it. I found this extremely helpful.
I shaved my head at 45 for a gf who was sick. I absolutely LOVED it!! Def would do it again!!
I would love to see a video on really curly hair for over 50’s.
Me too!
If you want a "shag" style, you have to ask for a mullet cut (lol). They'll know what that is...................Good Luck.
No. 5 is the huge problem I constantly receive and it’s horrible to style around. Btw, I am a hairstylist from the late 60’s and early 70’s. I can see the problem and explain how I want my hair cut but it doesn’t happen. Thank you Justin.
I hear you there! Communication is the toughest part of all of this, as you know!
Can you do your own hair? I still do mine at 73. Takes practice.
Some of the hairstyles here are wigs 😊 but that's ok. And I think what ever works for you and your happy with it. That's what matters.
Get rid of excess weight on top , not length
Wow you just described what I couldn’t when I get my hair styled! It must be getting cut even all around because I have to try to adjust with styling and that’s just too much hassle so, on goes the ball cap! 🫤 I get a great cut occasionally that just works and is excellent and flattering then the next time….ugh! Sadly, in my experience, there aren’t that many stylists that understand the head shape and what each need to flatter the shape. 🤷🏼♀️
I hear you there! Usually when people have a haircut, that is super flattering, and really easy to style, it’s the shape in the cut that makes it happen!
This is so true! I can’t get the stylist to cut the same haircut twice - even with pics! And to find someone who can actually cut style into hair …
In my country either
I look absolutely BEAUTIFUL AND FAB in 3 of these Styles so I'M KEEPING THEM until I either cut it or let it grow out!! I AINT GOT TIME FOR THIS.😂
Hey Justin, I like your new approach a lot… you seem more humble and more approachable. very very attractive I must say, I like how you explain the hairstyles and it’s lines.
So sorry to hear that! This happens more than I'd like to admit. I'm glad this video helped!
I make a point of looking for the least edgy, but still sophisticated-looking (and sounding) hairstylist I can find before booking with him/her.
Yes. I’ve experienced the same.
I love that you took the chance to change though!!! Excited to hear how it turns out after your cut!

I love those first pixie hair cuts, they’re so cute, not everyone can wear them though
Thank you Justin ive just come across your video and it was great. I'm 66 and I've started to grow my hair again.
I shaved my hair off when I had major C-spine surgeries. Haven't looked back. Liberating. ❤🎉

I've cut my own hair for years. I really liked the look of that last girl you said was too short (blonde). My hair is all layers only slightly longer than hers. With the help of gels, sprays and curling iron I always get compliments.

Hi from Australia, I did too
Same here, Terri - I brought pictures and was precise in my instructions as to what I wanted, but he still kept giving me that damned old lady haircut! After the third time, I went somewhere else. I don’t know if it’s ego, or that they think they know best, but they need to listen to their customer. I may be a senior lady, but I know what I want my hair to look like.
I know why I watch your videos, cause I LOVE them. I just don't know why I felt the need to learn about short hair as I will never willingly cut my hair into something short 😂😅
Thank you for doing what you do.
You are so welcome! Thank you so much for that!!! SUCH a massive compliment.
The first hair style looks like the early 1970s Shag which was so popular.
Totally! It's defiantly a throwback to that. I actually don't hate that style, it can look great, it's just that it takes the right person or it doesn't work at all IMO.
I kind of love the first hair style too! My sister had a very similar cut in the early 70s & it was so cute!
They called it the French cut
@@josephinelatte4410 Thank you, now I recall liking a girls hair and that is what she called it. I had my long hair cut into that style.
@@danhan2124 it looks like Shirley Partridge from the Partridge Family!! 😂
Sending good vibes for you treatments ❤
Post chemo and my hair is a MESS now! I'm glad I saw this video BEFORE going to a salon, however! Thank you 😃
Justin, please please please give some tips on styles whilst growing out hair from bald.
Another great video! The first series of photos had me giggling. All I kept seeing was the start of the mullet cut.
Wow Justin, I really need help! My hair has been a Bob for soooooooo long. I am 73 & blond forever. I do love your videos. I am addicted to them.
@ Hester Green: did the biotin help? I'm taking it too, for the same reason.
Thank you so much Justin for actually educating me about the hair behind the ear!
Love this... I cut my own hair because my budget doesn't allow for a professional cut besides which when I have spent good $on a cut have found myself adjusting it afterwards. What you've said makes total sense... now if I can do it myself will be the big question! Any advice for do it yourselfers would be appreciated! Thanks!
I have grown my hair out starting with the COVID lockdown. I am 68 yo and absolutely LOVE my past-the- shoulder-hair. ❤
hey!! that shirt you are wearing looks awesome on you. definitely an excellent color for you
As usual Justin, lots of knowledge behind the scenes. It’s been SO LONG since I had short hair. And, after seeing these reasons, I’m not planning to cut my mane short anytime soon.
Yes, I did learn something. I've seen some celebrities do that short & long nape haircut and it looks awful. Thanks for sharing ❤
To each his own buddy!
Showing how to updo shorter hair would be nice!
This is one of the most useful videos on this subject I've seen!!
Thanks! Love the short hair videos.
@@sheilasmith6674 not in Seattle for many years. Good luck!
I retired in 2021 after being a hairdresser for 45 years. I enjoy watching you. Thank you for sharing.
Wow! I came across your video by accident, I wouldn't normally watch a video on this subject because none I have ever seen made sense, yours actually MADE SENSE!! I am literally shocked!😮
Congratulations!🎉 You have a new Subscriber!😊
Please include one on types of curly hair. Tips too.
Watch. He says 1% can pull it off.
Great catch on the wigs! And how old are these pix? Thumbs down voted here….wear your hair the way you want to, ladies…this is just one more guys slanted opinion.
IKR???? The wigs were pretty obvious. 🎉😂
Exactly! No cut grows out perfect, but a good hairstylist can help with the transition.

Thanks!
Always love your videos! Thanks for the time and effort you put into them. ❤
Thank you! I appreciate that a lot! I do enjoy the filming and editing process, so it feels like less effort than it is. :)
@@AngelinaX23 thanks , I'm always game to try something new.
I agree with all your points.
Grate video X
Used to be a hairdresser but cant be anymore do to a busted shoulder.

Hi I enjoyed watching the different cut and I would like to see some styles for baby fine hair, I am 68 and I usually wear a head band
