This tune is very unusual for a battle theme. Unlike most charged and passionate battle themes, this one is measured and calculating, just like Norris Packard's approach to combat.
Alot of people who dunno much about Gundam don't understand why people like him, but for Gundam fans we see a hardened veteran outmaneuvering an entire squad of MS and making them look like complete amateurs. (Honestly were it not for the radar truck to triangulate his position they would've been totally screwed. He scanned and identified all the enemies within seconds including number, MS type and their armaments, was able to avoid cannon fire from the GM Ground Type twice, evaded the Gundam Ground Types fire after destroying a Guntank and easily overpower Shiros EZ8 by knowing to short circuit its camera and cpu systems with the shock cable.) Gundam can show you amidst all the newtype/psycommu godmode stuff there can be normal pilots who are just as capable in normal or slightly upgraded MS. To be complete honest I would have loved to seen more of Norris fighting in his Gouf Custom or even a normal Zaku. Like or hate him you can't deny the man clearly has great skills both in guerilla warfare and as a pilot.

His mere presence could have had a huge impact in such a fight with his mobility, cunning, and tactical awareness. Norris actually working in tandem with Shiro would have been quite the sight to behold. :)

If Norris hadn't realized he was fighting Aina's boyfriend, or had brought along a bazooka, or one of the other mobile suits in the base had backed him up, the entire 08th MS Team could have been slaughtered right there. As it is, he destroyed all three Guntanks, destroyed their anti-material rifle, and their only beam rifle was lost and buried under debris, ensuring the 08th Team didn't have the firepower to destroy the ship when it took off. So far as Norris was aware, he'd accomplished his mission of letting the ship and Aina escape, while sparing her lover. Unfortunately, the GM Sniper was a thing, along with the other Feddie forces who showed up.

Neither side is 'good' in any way shape or form, but atleast Zeon grunts believe that they are fighting for the overall independence of the Space Colonies from the sad and corrupt empire known as the Earth Federation which had a VERY bad tendency to use force to strong arm the Spacenoids into submission for much of the first half of the Universal Century.

How about Burning vs the Rookie squadron of Zaku IIs against his GM Custom? That has the same effect as here, since he's an ace going against inferior machines.
Even as a hardcore 0083 fan, I think I have to agree with that. Everything from the pacing, the animation, and that ending. By god that ending. Oh and this track of course. This track is really good.
Basteala while burning vs the rookies shows how mobile and swift a MS really can be handled correctly ( without it being piloted by someone the plot requires to win) the fight Packard vs Amada just gives you both the scale and the destruction that MS can cause. Also since both machines are not made to be as swift and thus more ground bound due to their heaviness it just gives the whole thing so much more impact
It's such a great track for what it's trying to convey. It's martial without the heroic overtones and relentless. It does a great job coveying how generally the team is out classed by Packard
I don't think there has been a scene that equals in terms of epicness. Maybe the last fight scene from Gundam Wing or some of the truly epic fights from the original MS Gundam (heck, even Gundam Build Fighters had some epic battles)
There are two parts of guntank culture that I have found from experience. One, the WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO meme. And two, being scared of this Theme and Gouf customs in general.
Something I always loved was, the Gouf was less powerful than each one of those Gundams. One shot from Karin's beam rifle would have done it. One slice from a beam sabre was what eventually did it. And yet in a six on one fight, in an inferior unit, Norris almost won.
+Sefrah Technically, Norris *did* win. His goal was to take out the Guntanks, which he successfully did. It cost him his life, but he nonetheless did technically win.

He split the team up, forced them to camp near the guntanks rather than gang up to chase him down, then fought a gundam 1vs1 with the goal of taking it hostage as a shield rather than killing it outright. Whenever he's overmatched in the fight, he runs away or forces them to the defensive by going for a guntank. He only sends the signal when he realizes his objective can't be achieved within the time frame he has left. Even then, he pretends to fight the Ez-8 so he can get a clear firing solution on the guntank behind it. Far too many gundam series battles boil down to pilots bickering with each other in personal spats while failing to shoot each other down. Norris is a soldier and a battle with another mobile suit is only worth it to him if it allows him to achieve his objectives.
This is what made 8th MS Team such a wonderful OVA. The cast from the Federation are a good bunch on their own right, but their conflicts really made the show shine with tough and/or crafty foes on the other side. It always made action scenes tense when things could feasably go either way regardless of who had the advantage. That said... Packard and his Gouf really make an impression by just straight up lifting a solid giant block of concrete off of them and glaring at the 8th MS team. After all, his MS may be quite vulnerable to beam weaponry, but then so are most MS in that era; His in particular, however, was considered one of the top performing mechs Zeon had. As a famous man once said: "This is no Zaku, boy! No Zaku!"
Actually, the Gouf Custom was about on par with a standard RX-79[G] while losing out in terms of raw power to the Ez8 Custom. The RX-79 is actually one of the weakest lead mobile suits in Gundam, basically being a souped up RGM-79. Towards the end of the series, other MS teams switched over to the GM from the RX-79 because replacement parts for the RX suits were too scarce, and the GM was comparable in performance while being far easier to procure. The original RX-78-2 was technically weaker than the standard Gouf, and only won due to Amuro's piloting skills. With the RX-79 being a slightly better RX-78 and the Gouf Custom being an upgunned regular Gouf, they're on par.
This track is first heard during "Duty and Ideals". That is the episode where Shiro and his team try to save a village from lost Zeon soldiers piloting Zakus.

Beam weapons were terrifying back in the OYW because no amount of armour could stop them, making the Zeon warmachines which needed entire salvos from large caliber balistics and or several Shells from Anti MS Launchers/cannons to go down into little more than Glass cannons without any meaningful defense. As a Zaku, Going up against a GM/Gundam ground type using a machine gun is a fair fight. Going up against one with a beam rifle is suicide, except if you’re brave, stupid or a good pilot.
He only has one fight scene unfortunately and I love to see more since the Gouf Custom wasn't just handed out like a standard side arm. Aces used them and it would be cool to see how he earned it.
MS-07B-3 Gouf Custom. Developed form the MS-07 Gouf Famously piloted by Zeon Legend Ramba Ral, This was a highly customized unit. It did away with the gun hand and Heat whip in favor of arm mounted machine guns and an electric line. Noris Packard made the EZ8 work for there victory
Important distinction here on top of it all. They did kill him, but it *wasn't* a victory. In the end they failed their mission and he got the last laugh
Have never seen MSG (algorithm came through here) but this is literally how I feel at work every day. Like a big fat John Williams action cue; epic fight on a tank barreling towards the cliff, etc.
Not surprising the Gouf Custom is one of the highest tier Zeon melee units in Mobile Suit Gundam: Bonds of the Battlefield. I love its recent 75mm gatling upgrade, 60 rounds of gundam-melting fury, then you eject the weapon like a badass and switch to an equally potent triple-barreled 35mm machine gun. SIEG ZEON!!
Meanwhile in Gundam Batlte Operation 2, the Gouf Custom is among one of IF NOT THE memetic BAD ass suit per excellence. Ergo: it's underpowered and is a liability for the team even if manned by an actual god like player.

Oh yeah, now I remember. He faked out Shiro with the promise of a sword clash, only to kill the last Guntank and die accomplishing his mission. But regardless, you wouldn't know a Zeek fan if one dropped a colony in your back yard. The leadership of Zeon were, by any standards, the clear evil in Gundam, committing gross acts of Hypocrisy and genocide to further their totalitarian goals. A Zeek fan would defend them regardless, but not I. Praise be to Holy Terra. But Norris Packard and his predicessor, Ramba Ral, were good men and great characters. No one remembers the Black Tri-stars, or Shin Matsunaga, or Johnny Ridden. But they Remember Ral and they remember Packard, the latter if not by name then by skill.
This is an amazingly good music track. IMO it beats the pants off most of the UC Gundam songs, including tracks from the original 0079. This is the track I think of when I think Zeon.
Yep. This and "Danger" from the 0079 series. Coincidentally plays when Ramba Ral battles Amuro, making it his theme, though it is used later during other Ace entanglements.
Yknow, all of the things I’m interested in seem to tie together in some way, including soundtracks. This right here sounds like it could be played over the scene where Ripley takes control of the APC in *Aliens* and it would sound the same
Plan on using this for a similar fight in my dnd campaign. My players are none the wiser of the source material. (They're defending siege placements to halt a retreat from the enemy. Sure you know how this ends.)
Shame we don't see many varients of tech gouf custom, while have seen some of the original gouf and some variants of it. Would love if they brought back gouf custom and maybe some variants based on it like high Mobility type or perhaps a heavy ballistic type ^^ the gouf custom along with zaku are my personal favorites. So let's hope we see another's series that bring backs this mobile suit

The leadership of Zeon were, by any standards, the clear evil in Gundam, committing gross acts of Hypocrisy and genocide to further their totalitarian goals. A Zeek fan would defend them regardless, but not I. Praise be to Holy Terra.
But Norris Packard and his predicessor, Ramba Ral, were good men and great characters. No one remembers the Black Tri-stars, or Shin
Matsunaga, or Johnny Ridden. But they Remember Ral and they remember Packard, the latter if not by name then by skill.

This is an amazingly good music track. IMO it beats the pants off most of the UC Gundam songs, including tracks from the original 0079. This is the track I think of when I think Zeon.
Yep. This and "Danger" from the 0079 series. Coincidentally plays when Ramba Ral battles Amuro, making it his theme, though it is used later during other Ace entanglements.

I'm still mystified that this somehow didn't make it into Gundam Versus' soundtrack.
Plan on using this for a similar fight in my dnd campaign. My players are none the wiser of the source material.

Shame we don't see many varients of tech gouf custom, while have seen some of the original gouf and some variants of it. Would love if they brought back gouf custom and maybe some variants based on it like high Mobility type or perhaps a heavy ballistic type ^^ the gouf custom along with zaku are my personal favorites. So let's hope we see another's series that bring backs this mobile suit
