I don't like Liu. Waldner is wayy better. My favorite is Ma Long ;) The GOAT! And my second pick would be Wang Liqin. He played a little bit like europeans!

The snappy sound coming from Liu ‘s racket every time he hits the ball. Could it be speed glue? Not trying to take anything away from his incredible skill. I think his services are every bit as good as Waldeners.
I think discussions as who is best is totally irrelevant unless you argue about the definitions about what it means to be the best. You can not compare players between generations. Well..can...but then you must find a way how to measure their qualities although their sport has changed. Yes, Ma Long is better than Waldner. So what? We can not predict how Waldner would have performed in his prime against him. You can only compare players from the same generation.
Longer vs shorter sets in their respective prime. 5 serves vs 2. Different ball in their prime. I say Waldner was the best player with old rules. Ma Long with the new rules. Pretty much impossible to compare. But i liked the old game more. More creativity with the smaller ball. Now it's more of being the best robot. I think it's a fairly unbiased view of the matter, even though I'm Swedish.

Then when their chosen golden boy reach the finals he is still fresh and rested while the other finalist from other country has worked his ass off each match to get there and is more likely to lose due to fatigue.

Yichuan Cai Jike is definitely the best in terms of his performance on top matches in history, but imo Ma Long is the best in terms of how balance his forehand and backhand is and there's no one ever achieved this perfection. Waldner is pretty good but unfortunately he is just about the same style with Guoliang (good serving, fast attack), he was just too old otherwise it's hard to say..
Tim guo yuehua, ma lin, wang liqin and wang hao had positive scores over waldner. liu lost to waldner only starting 2000, but prior to that, habitually won most of their matches

I watched the whole thing through and all I can say is that it's a good thing Liu had a bagful of bitch serves. A win is a win though. I don't think I saw a legal serve on either side in any of the matches LOL.
I'm surprised at how many serves and service returns were missed. Was this match played when servers were allowed to hide their service motions with their bodies? Is this why there are so many misses and poor returns? It seems nowadays, everyone hist s short serves the vast majority of the time., and few returns are missed. Here they mix up the serving, and hit lots of hard serve. The rallies also seem shorter than today's game.
Joe Marshall during speed glue era, rubbers were faster, balls were smaller and therefore faster and much more spinny. so less rallies. ittf made ball larger to make it slower, more visible to spectators, less spin, banned hidden serves in 2001, banned speed glue in 2008. With the slower ball, short lips died and liu had to retire

According to Waldner it took him a long time to read liu's serves... And many players have mentioned that the most difficult aspect to face Waldner was his serve... So here we are watching two very good at serves and adding that was allowed to hide the ball, a smaller and lighter ball... I'm not sure if it was the number of serves from five to two or the rule of showing the ball for serving...but one of the two ones was due to liu guoliang... I can't remember very well. But one change in rules for liu guoliang was the rubber he was and another was for his serve... But I don't remember which one was... If I do remember... I'll try to post it clearer... 👍
That¨s the effect of the short pimples.It produces weird knuckle balls some times with no spin,some times with light underspin that mess up the timing of the opponent.LGL was pretty much a junk baller.His serves were second to none but he didn¨t play that much against Europeans which made his style even trickier.
From what he said, he was probably also a Chinese penhold pip-out style player who played Waldner quite a bit with success. This should narrow down to only a few candidates. I am guessing that the he is Chen LongCan.

Nirav Shakya OK. No, Jan-Ove Waldner and Guoliang Liu were during their playing in the world elite never amateurs compared to Xin Xu or Hao Wang. Matches don't need to contain long rallies in order to be competitive or to be an example of advanced playing.
