Great match. Two later Olympics Gold Medalists played against each other.
ITTF, please take a look at how these old games were held in the past. The lighting of the sport hall, the closeness of the audiences to the table and the style of the commentators; all these uplift a table tennis match to a classy snooker competition. Today we have only gaudy table tennis matches.

Gentlemen, the table tennis game starts with the serve! Whether Waldner wins a lot of games based on his serves or not, it is how the game starts, everyone knows this..Meaning that all other players and everybody can also work on their serves..Take a look a Ma Lin: has worked hard on his serves but also on his service return..
Yes, many of the top players are 3rd ball attackers and 5th ball winners. The serve sets up the 'easy' return for you to launch into the 3rd ball attack. And if you didn't win, then the 4th ball is defensive and you hit the 5th ball as the winner.
Waldner did, at least in this Final. He outclassed Yoo Nam Kyu in the last game. Very nice display of a true master!

Thank you a bunch, I'm thrilled by your dig, dear Murray, as this was a real treat to us, old-timers who can deeply appreciate a truly classic as this one. The narration by Matthew Syed makes it all the more enjoyable, as he is a solid knowledgeable connoisseur of the intricacies of the TT game, and all his inputs were right on the spot.
This was a combination of factors that makes it beyond fabulous.
The only sad note is that the TV/Producers who holds its rights decided to severely edit its final video, stealing 64 points from us which, on such a high level game as this one, practically reduces it to a mere illustration of a Final between the Greatest of all times and a really hard and capable opponent - albeit a very frustrated and emotionally taken one, a humanely surprise compared to how cold, focused and undisturbed most asian players generally are.
But, anyway, I gather that's "it's better some than none", isn't it? ;)

Now that is a find! The legendary 1988 Olympic Champion Yoo Nam Kyu at his best. No one could withstand his fast attacks at that time.

presumably circa 87-so before Yoo Nam Kyu had won the Olympics in Seoul. So the 1st two Olympic champions both in action!!
He says Waldner is 22 and Yoo is 20 so that means this was shot 87.
Waldner was always something special under pressure. A modern player with a similar style to Yoo Nam Kyu is the Korean Ryu Seung Min.

It was 87 just before the 1988 Olympics where Yoo won Gold. It was at The Thornaby Pavillion in NE UK. I remember watching it on TV. I was 11 and its the match which got me playing

It was completely clever by waldner to speed up the gap between points nd serve quickly with all his variations nd even wen yu was serving he returned the ball too quickly

waldner just got free points and won the match pratically.
No such thing as free points - from 12-8 in the third set, his serves were too deceptive for the Korean, and JOW went on the attack devastatingly.

No I do not agree.
Waldner is a legend, no doubt, but in different times there have been others who were at the top and is difficult to compare players in different periods.
Waldner built his career on a fantastic but very hidden service. I spoke to various world top players and I heard more than once that without such service Waldner would have lost much more, so I desume he was, more or less, as good as the other World top players (but for his service)
He is fantastic though.

Would you make the case that Ma Lin was not better than European players during the time because if you take away his forehand loop and replace it with a "normal" one, he would have lost much more?

Last set is not weird. Waldner kept the pressure and pace (like JW says in the post match interview) and YNK folded under pressure and gave up mentally or maybe JW won thanks to his strength - YNK was not strong enough to keep up. You can’t blame a winner for why the loser lost. Unless they play with an injury, but then it is also not the winners fault that the loser is injured. This is not ice skating on Olympic level. ;)
No, this is where the GREAT players show why they're GREAT. At 12-8 ahead, Waldner applies the pressure with 5 devastating serves - quick with spin, and YNK coudn't handle the returns. Waldner attacks with full force and YNK can't stop the stampede. Waldner wins all 5 of his serves to lead 17-8. YNK then gives up.
Now we are sure that Yoo Nam Kyu mother watched the video... 1 Dislike!

It's weird that now in 2018 with several techniques in place to slow the game down (no more speed glue, plastic ball), one would expect to see longer rallies. But no, now TT's been degraded to serve-and-whack, promoted by the Chinese. There are just no more rallies anymore ...
In F1, all the rules changes are to slow the cars down - yet each year the lap times get less and less, and the cars get quicker and quicker. Yes, in TT the rule changes were there to slow the ball down - but you're forgetting that athletes today are much more stronger and fitter, and with sports science, they're able to hit the balls with more power and spin, making the attacking shots much harder to defend against.

Yoo Nam Kyu has completely surrendered at the end of the last set. It did spoil a little bit the beauty of the game in my opinion. It is a shame. He bowed to JOW's power, he acknowledged the Swedish was the best though^^
From 12-8 down, YNK coudln't handle the 5 deceptive serves from JOW and lost those 5 points without reply. He surrendered knowing that at 17-8 down, he can't win.
Dramatically bad film angles and camera distance. Deserved better coverage. Pls fire the camera crew.
This was 1987.
And the angle was good, at least better than what we have today.
