      +Daniel Webster-hall It seems so. At the same time - how much time does he got to think about where he's gonna put the blocks. He hardly got the time to get the racket to the ball, yet he is outplaying his opponent. J-O is a true ball artist and magician. A Mozart of ball sports.

      There have been many good blockers throughout the years what made the difference is Waldner's forehand loop that finished those points.Goes full power down the line whereas most Europeans would try to spin it.

    4:16 Ma Long Who ?

  • @martindominikus6846
    @martindominikus6846 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Think of it, Waldner is like Messi in table tennis, and Chinese Player (especially) Ma Long is like Cristiano Ronaldo. Both Waldner and Messi have "natural" touch. Their play are very simple and don't need so many fancy movement names but very fluent and natural! Their movement perhaps looked weird sometimes but they are very comfortable with it. They know when to play around, loosen up the game, make a creative game, etc.
    Both Ma Long and Ronaldo is very instructional and went to heavy repetition through years, that's why their movement looked so strict, so instructional, or I call them "tense". I don't think Ma Long can beat Waldner if he wasn't in Chinese team.
    Yes we see Ma Long won defeat Waldner in score. Table tennis competition, I said "competition", is all about speed and elasticity (Chinese team had already proved it), they are unstoppable, there is no exception to Waldner. Although Walder is so good with the ball, he still can't react fast enough or catch the ball with, let's say, 120 km/h (I believe Ma Long or Wang Liqin easily surpass this number), while the Chinese team can!
    Both European and Chinese players are good with serving and returning the serve. Most of European have lazy legs, otherwise Chinese have very solid footwork, "elastic" ability, and very great movement transition (forehand to backhand or vice versa), so they can react with any type of movement better. That's why the European almost can't beat the Chinese.
    We miss this kind of play, BUT competition is competition. Every team have to do something so they can win, and Chinese team choose the "hard way" and they win most of the time.

    • @dickn.ormous1064
      @dickn.ormous1064 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's BS.Waldner had great footwork and one of the most economic games ever.Ma Long is not a power player,he is a speed player who hits quite flat.Waldner's forehand was both fast and spiny with tremendous wrist acceleration that gave huge amounts of sidespin.
      His destruction of Boll and Ma Lin in the Olympics was mostly due to his forehand power.Even at 38 with a broken back he could go blow for blow against Wang Liqin's humongous forehand.Don't know where you get those ideas but most players are less athletic than Europeans and Koreans of the past cause they cover less ground with their two wing styles which is why Harimoto had significant success before even entering puberty.
      For years Ma Long has been getting away with a broken knee by simply playing pushes and backhand blocks,he is hardly a power player.

      @semiambidextrous 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +shogrran As a young man, and thanks for those youtube videos, he also played (like 95%) what today's young starts play. His all-round style has ever been there, but become more and more dominant in his play as he grew older. Today, with no footwork to keep up with XU Xin, Yan An and all the others from around the globe, he sticks to the table as much as possible. And the touch you see today has been developed through decades of amazing play - and is really not something you can teach. In fact, the same innate talent can be seen in the style of many, perhaps less lime-lighted young players of these days. So, it's not something is not taught to today's youth, because it was NOT what he was taught, either. We can't expect the youth to play this style, simply because it takes A; decades of practice to develop this touch, and B; also decades to calm down and come back from the fun of standing away from the table in topspin-to-topspin rallies, and enjoy the world of the all-round play. For reference, watch Ma Lin 20 years ago and today (another retired warrior)

    • @shogrran
      @shogrran 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He had this "touch" even as a 21 year old competitor. You can't say "he developed it through decades of amazing play" at least not to him. He improved the "touch" but it was there even in his early years.

      I get your point, but it's not totally true...Ma Long refined his style through the years and he's also capable of making elegant moves. Not like Walker who was elegant by simply breathing, but Ma Long didn't get where he is now only by being a colorless machine of padding the ball back to the table

  • @conrad7771
    @conrad7771 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Now we see MA LONG trying to be creative and do sidespin blocks like his master WALDNER.
    Don't go there my favorite modern player MA LONG, JAN OVE did this with natural instinct at will.
    Waldner is the only true master and was put on this earth to give players that haven't got the sheer power of MA LONG inspiration.
    I bet many games have been won at club level occasionally beating players better than themselves using some of Waldners methods and free flowing style.
    Unless you have the raw power of MA Long I would strongly recommend you study the greatest genius of all time,then and only then will you begin to understand the MASTER. Anyway good luck with your own game Joseph

      Sidespin blocking started with the Hungarians but Waldner was the first to use them to set up his forehand loop which was deadly.Ma Long is near Waldner in terms of angles and court geometry,his go to strategy is hitting to the middle.

The game is less exciting and new guys are actually get slaughtered at the club because if they hit with their “salute hand” technique they just got killed with people who trained with whole body kicks since the ball is too slow.
