You can see Wang is a little awe struck by Waldner and how much respect he has particually on his serve. Would of been a awesome match to see both in there prime. But Waldner was punching well above his weight after his prime for so long..that what made him so great. Waldner is pure magician.
These games were played after Waldner won second times World Championship in 1997. It was also his second peak in his sport career. At that stage, Wang LQ had no capability to beat Waldner in terms of skills and mentality.

By the 1997 top players were taking advantage of it and as a result many points were lost directly from the serve. Bigger ball has also helped to increase length of rallies however it's not as big of a change as the service rule.

This sport has changed so much since then. Waldner by far the best player of his era and Ma Long the best player of his era imo. So many fantastic players between including Ma Lin, Wang Hao and this player Wang Liqin and the europeans Timo Boll and Vladimir Samsonov.

@@NoSpeechForTheDumb 70 to 75 percentage of points is in first 4 strokes...10 to 15 percentage stroke 5 and 6...so there are not many long rally's in general and if there are they are most of the time very word watching. If you look at tabletennis from 30/40 years ago its a lot of unforced errors and misreading serves ( because of rules) Quality of the game now is much higher; plastic balls or not...some people have a certain need to romantisice earlier times.....

Most of rallies last 5-7 strokes. And just count the number of long rally with more than 10 strokes in a match nowadays you can see how long it is.
tteverywhere 97 Well, that doesnt sound convincing to me. But regardless, this match on this video has 7 rallies with 10 strokes or more though out the whole match and 115 rallies were played. While with the 11 scoreline, most of matches nowadays last for less than 100 rallies unless they played 7 sets. And Ive seen many matches with more than 15 of 10 strokes rallies and even matches with more than one 20 strokes rallies. Based on the time it takes for one match to finish, it still show that nowadays rallies are longer in general.
In principal, the idea of calming down the service is good. The problem I have with the rules at hand is that they are too difficult to judge, and rules that can't be judged are useless at best.

Wang Liquin had notoriously crappy return of serve.There's a match in 1999 against Kreanga and once Kreanga starts serving backhand serves to Wang's forehand he totally collapsed. As you may know it's pretty much impossible to hide the backhand serve.His short game was simply crap for the 38mm ball. He almost lost to an Australian at the 2008 Olympics because he couldn't read his tomahawk serve. Waldner wasn't even the worst match up serving wise for him 'cause he was particularly vulnerable to guys who liked to 3rd ball attack with their backhand like Wang Hao and Schlager.
@@maxk880 unfair? No it’s called a SKILL. Table tennis with a smaller ball, hidden serves required 10x more skill to play. It’s not unfair and people were actually good or bad at it. It was dumbed down to extend point length and rallies in the hopes it would bring mass appeal, which it still has not. Beyond that waldners real strength was in his point construction and strategy and variation in what he could do. The serves were just another strong point

I felt very sorry for liqin in 2004 olympics when he was forced to throw he match against wang hao because the chinese thought hao had better chance against waldner,though waldner didnt reach final and everything it became a throwback on the chinese with ruy min winning and then also liqin beat waldner for bronse.

Including a ball change from 38 to 40 mm. Mozart of table tennis was not my saying. World top ten for 20 years. The Chinese newer bothered to try to read him because they knew they could not. 13 years older still he could beat Wang. Given the opportunity of the same age and no bad back, no question.
While Waldner could beat Wang Liqin while both in their primes it would be tough still and maybe only a 50/50. Waldner was great but he definitely wasn't invincible even back then. People like Liu Guoliang gave him a lot of trouble and Jan was even feared by him and his serves during his time, he even stated this himself. Ma Lin was also way ahead of him in terms of skill and ability. But who knows for sure...

Wang prime I think would beat Waldner Prime. However, it's still very hard to compare since the rules and the game has changed so much.
Wang in Waldner's era would have a career similar to Ma Wenge.His backhand and serve receive would have been exposed by Europeans even more.
