This is precious, Johnny Carson interviewing Carrie Fisher. They're both gone now. I admired them because I wanted the social graces of Johnny Carson and I wanted to date Carrie Fisher.
All three of them... you forgot Ed McMahon... are gone now.
I have one of my late-father's Johnny Carson sports jackets from the '70s. It was in his wardrobe closet, all the way to the right, still in the plastic bag with the cleaner's tag stapled to the paper shoulder protector through the bag. It had last been sent to the cleaner in July of 1989. So the sports jacket waited there, unworn, for over twenty-one years for me to find it. Now, it's an artifact that I'll take out and admire every once in a while.

I just watched "Shampoo" a few days ago. I had never been any sort of fan of hers, and I have only seen her in the original "Star Wars" when it came out in the theater, but she was FANTASTIC in "Shampoo". Just fantastic. She only had a 5-minute scene. She was 19, and it was her first film role, and she was so pitch-perfect.
I will always love you Carrie Fisher ... our Princess Leia; may your adorable, witty, comedic, tenacious, and peculiar soul find a place to entertain within God's loving embrace.

I miss Carson, i remember seeing him as a kid....he can make a long interesting conversation out of nothing.!! alot of us took him for granted when we were younger, now we realize what a classy man he was... sure could use him today, instead of all the garbage we have.

All this talk about Carrie being wasted in this interview with Carson I think is off-track. Look at some of the other interviews with her on TH-cam. Same gal, same patterns of speech, same mannerisms. She's a trifle nervous here but it doesn't freeze her or incapacitate her.
Amazing woman; not everyone stars in a blockbuster hit at age 20 or whatever she was when Star Wars first came out.
So Mad That's just her natural cool low key personality much like Harrison's. Some might even say soft spoken seeking no attention.
However in the last 15+years she seems quite the loud mouth lol.
+So Mad that's because she was always coked up. She admitted to it after the first movie they were coked up on the set even. She was coked up and on alcohol in probably all of her interviews which would explain the speech patterns. Cocaine will do that
Well you may be right. I used to do coke myself back in my young musician days. It all depends on how much blow you toot as to how zizzed out you get, how fast you talk, etc.
I may be over-defensive about Fisher as I was so smitten with her when the original Star Wars movie came out in 1977. Nothing on her scale obviously, but I was an entertainer (country, country/rock - I worked with Ray Price briefly back in the summer of 1982) and have some empathy with people in that position.
I'll say this; if she was high on this Carson show, or on the 2 or 3 Letterman show interviews that are on TH-cam, she performed very well under the influence. Completely cogent, in control of herself, witty, funny, and very attractive.
Carrie Fisher was the Complete Package starting at age 19 and personally I think she was just great.
I love and adore her.......she was so cute in the new star wars movie....she just has those amazing sweet eyes...
This was great watching again, I remember watching it when it first aired. You got me started on a Carrie Fisher nostalgia tour now, that will probably lead me straight into Star Wars territory. Yep. But I'm not complainin'!

I was six years old when Star Wars came out, Carrie was my first celebrity crush. I've watched her life over the years, sometimes I didn't check in on her for like five years but was always eventually reminded of her. I think The Empire Strikes Back was her best movie.

I was the same age, but for some reason I didn't have that reaction. You must have matured early. My first crush was Debbie Harry.

I highly recommend you read Fisher's biography to understand why she acted and sounded the way she did (she was bipolar and didn't know it at the time), and how being the iconic Princess Leia totally messed with her mind (and love life).

Bruce Bromley it's got to be very hard for family. I have no videos of my parents, who are gone now; and I think it would be incredibly painful to see them in video. to see them move and hear their voice and not be able to touch them again would be heart breaking.

Yeah, and even though I thought the interview went ok, I noticed one of Johnny's (now known and discussed with those interested) tells that he is aborting the interview is that he looks at his producer and he (Johnny) initiates the "oh, we've got to go to commercial?" even though the producer was not calling for it at the time. They were probably scheduled to talk to Fisher for two segments and Johnny had had enough of her fairly soon into the second. After the clip, she was out of there...
Scott LaMont That's probably SOP when they have to spring the trapdoor on an unruly or fucked up guest. The host and producer have prearranged signals. It's mostly to protect the guest more than anything else.
British talk show hosts are famed for their cruelty. That Jonathan Ross would've kept her on a tortured her.

There's another old clip where she's in the RotJ bikini where she had a much thicker accent. Sometime in the mid-90s she just stopped caring, I think.
