1940's Metal Shear - Restoration

Found this 1940's HiLLS HiLSHEAR metal shear at a junk shop a while back and finally got round to restoring it.
Its a very unusual shear and nice compact design helps with storage.

@@DiesInEveryFilm You should come visit sometime I mean I bet you would be a great instructor. The people who haven't I showed and my instructor chase who had not seen you loved when you kicked Deadpool out... don't come back, and also the spray can right after. I LOVED MIG welding it was so freaking fun, they said I was pretty good with a tig welder as well but I need to work on using a rod... I also shocked the heck out of myself, long story short don't put your arm on the table lol. Also check my latest video with Zach if you're interested. It was funny cause I found the episode and when he walked in he was literally wearing the exact same clothes XD. You should have seen the chefs knife he made completed as it was beautiful and it was rust bound damascus.

@@DiesInEveryFilm I also did stick welding and used the plasma cutter. Stick welding is HARD well trying to start the bloody thing, once you start it it's pretty easy.

I could use that set of metal shears. I have a air shears but the bad thing with them is I would say those would cut lot thicker steel. For doing body work. Awesome job.

New to the channel, cool project. I’d have liked to see a bit more attention on the bare metal surfaces, like the inside of the gears.
The bluing looks surprisingly uniform and the whole piece turned out great. Cheers.

I did all the fiddly bits off camera as they were quite boring but yeh the gears I actually forgot and did them near the end however when i greased the gears they looked dirty again

Great job on the shear. I am a little concerned about when you spray paint. You wear a mask which is very smart but it seems the overspray just goes all over your shop. Do you have a fan or ventilation? Are you worried about finding overspray on your tools and such? Other than that, love your videos.

Thanks. Yes i have ventilation in my shed that keeps spray to a minimum but there is some overspray however it cleans up as a dust cause its dry when it lands on anything

Hey DiesInEveryFilm, I have just started my own channel and as a novice I wanted to ask, is it bad form to do a restoration on exactly the same tool or whatever as someone else? After watching this video when you first posted it I jumped on eBay and found one listed and bought it.
As you said it’s an awesome bit of kit and I would like to do a restoration video on mine as well but I certainly don’t want to tread on anyone’s toes so if that would be considered rude generally or to you in particular then I’ll restore it but I won’t video it.

The position of the handle on that shear looks awkward. Is it adjustable?

Yeh it is slightly strange to get used to. No unfortunately its not adjustable on the other side of the gear theres no teeth which is unusual. It’s actually easier to cut with when not trying to film hahahahaha

Hi there, could you tell me what site you got you info from for the shear as I just picked one up of feebay Australia and found your channel while looking for info on it. Mine is the same colour as yours and will need restoration but I love the way it’s so compact. I had never seen one like it so had to have it. I found information on google from searching hillshear and i looked up hills the company that manufactured them in England but there wasn’t much information at all to be honest
