Im about to get my 2nd whippet (a 1.5 year old male surrendered to a local greyhound adoption agency) and want to feed my current girl and my new boy a better diet than kibble. Thanks for this helpful video!

How do you find him off lead on the beach? My and husband live in Southbourne considering getting a Whippet in the future. How did you develop strong recall?

Thanks for the info!! What kind of chicken is that ? I’ve been trying to find some information on how to feed my whippet, she’s 7 months old and doesn’t seem to be enjoying her kibble anymore, and I’m noticing shes getting thinner☹️

Hello :) thanks for reaching out Mariana. I absolutely don’t want to assume anything nor do I want to ‘tell’ you what to do so I’ll just leave some thoughts here to consider.
Dogs are little piglets. If a dog is being picky with their dinner there’s a chance they are being spoilt. For example: being fed human food at the table, too many treats, treats that are bloating their little tummy’s etc. Although piglets they are intelligent and can sometimes reject food if they know there’s something tastier.
Firstly I’d suggest not giving your dog treats. Secondly, make a big deal out of your dogs dinner by hyping it up with noises like ‘mmmmmm looks tasty’ and even pretend to eat some yourself.
If you don’t feed your whip at the table or over treat them, hyping up their dinner can help.
If you’re only feeding your whip biscuits then I would suggest adding some chicken (raw or cooked) depending on what works for you and your dog.
Remember a rule of thumb for whippets is to have 3 ribs visible. ‘People’ are so used to seeing dogs who are overweight these days, seeing an in shape whippet can look strange and ‘too skinny’
I hope this helps but if you have anymore questions just fire them over.
I will just mention that I’m only speaking from experience. I’m not a vet or a dog trainer etc! Just very passionate about my whippet :)
      Have a great weekend Mariana!
Side notes: I’m not suggesting that you never treat your whippet again! 😅 and as for the chicken in this video. It’s from pets at home. I now use regular chicken thighs from the supermarket :)

@@freddiethewhippett thank you! Any help I can get from other whippet owners is welcome! I live in mexico and in the city I’m in there’s like 3 whippets including mine, even my vet is a bit off her game with my pup,.
Do you give the chicken thighs with bone or just the meat ? I’ll try to mix that with her food
We don’t give her treats very often so maybe she’s just picky 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@marianafll I purchase boneless thighs. My whippet doesn’t digest the bones well.
Definitely mix some food up and see how you get on 😊
Keep me posted on your whippet journey too!

Hi mate - I’m bringing home a whippet puppy tomorrow (9 weeks old) . How much and how many times should I feed him ? Thanks

    • @freddiethewhippett
      @freddiethewhippett  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey dude!
Ask the breeders what he’s currently eating. I’d continue doing what the breeders are doing and slowly change the food to what works for you.
If you want to raw feed take things slowly, add a little into his current food until you are feeding him entirely raw.
As he’s so young I’d advise you feed him 3 times per day. Small meals split between 10am, 1pm, 5pm for example. Don’t feed too late otherwise he will need to poop during the night (this might happen anyway) but it’s a nice trick to try avoid it happening in the house.
All advise with feeding is a bit all over the place but to be honest it comes down to what works for you and the dog :) in terms of the amounts... my 1 year old is having a total of 200g food per day. I wouldn’t know what to advise other than to ask the breeders.
Let me know how you get on!

What type of chicken are you using raw or cooked

Next year we will be getting our own whippet puppy, so we are now in the process of preparation and organising the house. I like the fact that you are mixing half kibbles and half raw meat. I have recently read that raw food digestion on dogs works much faster than a kibbles diet. Does this mix cause food digestion issues or the timing and number of times the dog needs to poop every day? Also what supplements, if any, do you add to the meals? Do you feed Freddie raw eggs and shells, and omega 3 supplements with every meal?

    • @freddiethewhippett

Thanks for reaching out. I will be posting a video in more detail for you soon. Freddie suffers with seizures so we avoid feeding him anything like eggs.
If raw feeding will suit your lifestyle and the dog, thats great.
Regarding Freddie. I walk him at around 8am every day. During this 1.5 hour walk he will poop twice. (Only small whippet poops) He is then fed 50g raw meat with 50g kibble. I add parsnip and some Hemp oil to his food. His second walk is then at 6pm where he poops once or twice. This will depend on how many treats he has had during walks. He then eats another meal at around 19.30 which consists of 50g raw meat and 50g kibble. I add parsnip and hemp oil to this meal too.
His poops always come out as they should. He occasionally suffers from some 'wind' but this is mostly caused by what he finds and eats on the floor on walks. Sometimes this can't be avoided. He is a pig! haha
As mentioned above. I will be posting an updated video for you soon and hope it will be of some use for you. I have learned so much having Freddie. Especially as I re-homed him to then find out he suffered from seizures...
Looking forward to your whippet updates Mark. Any more questions I might be able to help with just let me know.
      Many thanks,
      Jed

@@freddiethewhippett Considering that Freddie suffers from seizures he is still a smart and fast runner. I think that this type of exercise is really helping him out physically and giving him good mental stimulation. Would really like to see more videos of Freddie.
Where I live there are no beaches or large open spaces, so I will be giving daily walks of around an hour every day. On weekends will do some running and games. Obviously, I need to make sure that he is 'mastering' recalls.
As soon as the whippet reaches the age of 6 months my intention is to slowly change his dry food meals with a mix of Prince Barf Diet Beef & Green Tripe Raw Food; and Dry Food of Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream Canine Formula with Smoked Salmon. Is this a healthy combination of two meal every day for a whippet? What would be the average grams in raw and dry food per meal? Not sure if I should start feeding the whippet a mix of Raw and Dry meal from the very start (when still a puppy).

    • @freddiethewhippett

@@eaglet2000 Ill be honest. If i didn't have open spaces for Freddie to run he would be unbearable. I can walk him for 2 hours on a lead. I get home and he will have tons of energy. I believe whippets only drain energy after a few good sprints.
I'd advise keeping your pups diet very basic to start with. Whippets have very small and sensitive stomachs. Ease into food changes very slowly to see what works and what doesn't. Tripe makes Freddie STINK. His farts are like acid so we don't feed him tripe. Haha
Grams of food depends entirely on how much exercise and what kind of exercise. You can go by eye with whippets. You should see the last 2-3 ribs ideally. You can play around with food. Be careful though as whippets can get out of shape pretty quickly. Top tip - NEVER feed your whippet at the table. lol

Protein is important as dogs are carnivores.
