Until we get Airlocks without banister rails, I start with the Airlock. I adjust the height so the rails on the 1st bit of catwalk at the bottom of the stairs is just under the ground. So at least that gives you semblance of sensible stairs rails. I know it's a small thing, but the whole thing with banister rails sloping streight into the ground annoys, as it did with fallout.
something to also note getting the angles can be tricky with the controls but 99% of items you build come into being aligned to you so if you use that yellow line at the bottom of the building hud and line it up with what you are trying to build it will be aligned already.
Hey old friend, good to see you back on the TH-cam (you probably never left) I used to follow you constantly when I played Fallout 4. You taught me so much about building in that game, and here you are doing it up again. Thanks, Dave
I think the issue is unless you have a small ship the huge landing pad is needed and not being able to place shit on it is really limiting. Best you can do is flank with industrial lights and use a hab, airlock, and long corridor as a walkway near the pad.
How about putting a small structure at the side of the landing pad tall enough to the have a few corridors layered out in an L shape going to another structure near by. Make a few of these to give your landing pad life. Admittedly I have not done this myself so the landing pad may be too tall for this to work but if it works then brilliant!! 😁

After years of learning from your f4 settelement building, it's really nice to watch you make content again for Starfield. Look forward to more builds to come!
@norespawns I recently learned that you can place the Large Storage Crates (interior type) in the outer areas, and use the cargo links w/ them. They also hold a decent amount. This would allow even more storage AND decor features outside.
I know this is all about building just thought I'd add some tips, by setting down the air lock first sets the foundation, as if you place the building down before hand sometimes the airlock will not stretch as high, also a none habitation planet will not allow for husbandry or botany. Not only can you change variations of the windows but you can also change the width of the inner door ways if you omit the hallways when snapping the buildings together. Another little trick I discovered is that you can place down the large containers side-by-side getting around that hard snap. To do this place down the large container first then place down the smallest container so that it snaps offset to the large container then grab the next large container and set it down so that it offsets to the smaller container then move the smaller container to snap to the other side of the large container and it will align the large containers to start a new row right down beside the first row, this is only if you don't want them to snap on top of each other, you can keep them all down at a reachable level.
The way I use the Scan Booster, while debating its usefulness which is up to the player I’ll explain. I put down an Outpost, quick power facility, drop the best Scanner Booster (Military). I have high scanning skills also. I jump to the highest elevation on top my ship as it’s often the highest elevation around in vicinity of Outpost. From there I scan to the very furthest I can see in perimeter around Outpost. That just lets me know if I need to move the outpost beacon meters in any direction to a better spot. If you’re close to an elevated mountain, you can see or scan far in any direction you can see. Can also drop a Sentry Tower as it has very high elevation and if your on a low gravity planet it’s easier to boot jump to the top. Now that vantage point you can use to scan the entire 360 perimeter for resources beyond your Outpost of to relocate the same Outpost to a more favorable spot. You don’t have to do a lot of walking. But that’s how I use and play with the Scan Booster and it does show you with your skills what resources are well beyond your Outpost perimeter. If you just want a quick Outpost you don’t need to do any that. But if you want to help make sure you got the best spot in that entire area, it helps.
I miss the pieces from fallout a lot. Why they chose to only include prefab structures and not walls/doors/stairs/rails/fences etc blows my mind. I’ve been dreaming about space settlements for years and we get this. Man i hope they add more to it because there is just no aesthetic appeal to these at all.
Creation Club is confirmed coming to Starfield, so you know there will be a lot of paid mods that pad out settlement building, just like in Fallout 4. Of course over on PC, similar/better mods will be available for free.
You can place many power sources on top of habs. On my hyla 2 mountain top outpost I placed advanced wind turbines on top of circle habs. They don't clip or appear inside or through ceiling at all.
I understand this and I felt the same when trying to get on my high storage crates but doesn’t the aerial camera view alleviate the issue when building high up. The aerial view can be a bit weird though in regards to its angle
By the way, if you ever do a video where you decorate some outpost or "house" don't forget to mention that the mannequins are bugged. Many players (me included) lost outfits they placed on because those items are bugged and disappear (with the equipment) when you move to another planet. (Many Reddit posts about this "Bethesda's feature")
I hope there will be a Wasteland Workshop style DLC for this game adding many more building pieces. Till then I expect as many building mods that Fallout had. I really hope for Vault style Ramps and Stairways so that you don't feel so restricted when dealing with elevation. The other thing that could use a bit of work is the hallway lighting. As you walk through a longer hall made of short sections the lighting transition from section to section flickers. I would love to see premade 2, 3, 4, and 5 long combined walkways that have a single lighting mesh to stop the flicker. I know Bethesda has issues with the game engine since it's so old that the original coding was written on Parchment with a Quill but still, I Expect Modders will take up the slack.

Move it too far away from center and you lose your planet outpost marker. I had this happen. After moving my Outpost Beacon back to the center of my outpost build area, I was able to get the planet map marker to return. Short story: for now, don't move your Outpost Beacon once you place it. And if you do, keep it close to center.

I love base building and spent many hours in FO4 creating whole towns. The current building mechanics in Starfield are so frustrating I just can't do it. The snap distance alone makes me want to punch my screen. And don't even get me started on supply lines...
First things first... you're on console, while I'm on PC, and I notice something.... The lateral movements of your objects (2:10, the storage) is insanely smooth. On PC it's a jerky affair that makes lining things up almost impossble!!! I've found a line in the settings file that adjusts rotation speed but I can't find any line that adjusts how rapidly things move laterally. If it's there, what line is it!??!??!?!?!?!?

i havent started any outpost building yet but i just dont see the point? like all you do is harvest resources from it, which you can just buy from vendors anyway. you dont need to build workshops because they're on your ship already. fallout 4 made sense because you were building up a settlement to survive the wasteland and had to defend against raiders. this one just feels empty when you're building up a base on an isolated moon somewhere by yourself. ship building is far more fun.
Best advice I can offer is to not waste your time building outposts until Bethesda fixes the bugs. Outpost building is by far the buggiest part of the entire game, and there’s nothing more frustrating than spending hours building a megapolis and storing a bunch of loot there, just to have the game bug out and not allow you to land there anymore. It’s happened too many times to be a fluke, and it needs fixing
