  • Topwater spooks are some of the best bass fishing that a man or woman can experience. However, knowing when and where to throw a topwater spook is critical to catching more topwater bass.

I have always loved throwing a topwater spook and I think it is one of the best ways to catch numbers of bass and big bass.
As a tournament fisherman I like to catch big bass in order to do well in tournaments so I often go with a topwater spook for better than average bass.
The best thing about spooks is the work for a large part of the year. Once the bass spawn starts to wind down, the bass really seem to love hitting a spook. This continues through the summer and on in to fall.
When it comes to where you can throw a spook, the options are endless but my 4 favorite areas include docks, at schooling fish, secondary and main lake points, as well as grass flats.
BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

I've watched all of these videos, and have a question that didn't seem covered. And that's the hook set. I can walk it great, but have a poor hook-up ratio. I seem to pull away too quickly,or hey excited. I changed hooks thinking it could help, but I know it's me. I try to pause like frogging, but I think that's more harm than good. I tried seeing what you do,and you seem to continue working the bait. Any tips would be awesome. I know this is an old video,so here's hoping...

I wait until I feel the weight of the fish on my rod then set the hook. I try not to get too excited and pull when I hear or see the splash. Easier said than done though!

I guess I’m curious what is your go to top water during a dragonfly hatch?

Dragonfly, damsel fly and stone flies all crawl out of the water onto rocks, wood and up reeds and other vertical plants when they go from nymph to adult. Dragonflys emerge throughout the spring and summer. A few times I've seen small bass picking them off as they make their way to hatch, but I've never seen any time that the fish were concentrating on them to the point you could work out a pattern....unless you are fly fishing and are targeting dinks...
Maybe I just haven't witnessed a concentrated Dragonfly feeding frenzy. If it's a thing, I'd love to learn something new.

@@crobarrm8695at least in the UP of Michigan (lots of mosquitoes), around mid to late June there is a feeding window the last few hours of the day on calm day. When the wind calms down the mosquitoes come out and the dragonflies follow in massive swarms. Bass go air born regularly. Similar to how people down south look for the shad spawn, I look for the swarms of dragonflies.

Interesting. Never really seen anything like that here on the left coast. If it was me, I think I'd try something like a tiny torpedo or one of the cicada crawlers with the rubber legs that go out the sides... maybe even bind the legs to look like wings..
Sounds like a cool situation. I'll have to keep a better eye out and see if we get a similar occurrence here. Seems like a good challenge to work out an answer to.
      Good luck in your quest.

This is one of my favorite lures ever created. I don't use the full sized spooks very often unless im at a lake with large baitfish or saltwater fishing. I find I have the most luck for bass on Super Spook Jr. The smaller one's will still hit the Jr while still being able to attract the monsters as well, i've caught 7+lb fish on the Jr. Pond fish will hammer the Zara puppy too but it's a lot smaller than the other two and catches a lot of smaller fish. I like that you don't just have to fish these things in shallow water either they will definitely call up deeper bass, especially in clearer water, that will absolutely explode on the thing when they get there. If I can't fish a popper or a frog effectively, i'm tying on one of these dudes. I like to fish them with violent twitches sometimes, it'll make a lot more noise and throw off water like something is in a really big hurry to get away from something. Sometimes that's the only way you can get them to hit it actually.

I’m newer to bass fishing so I have a question. If the pond I go to has an average bass size of 2 pounds could I use the super spook jr or should I still go with the zara puppy?

I love the spook, would you consider doing the underspin ? And with that you could drop sum knowledge about the soft plastic swimbait/jerkbait. There are many types, I would like to know what each design was meant for. Full body, hollow body, split tail, paddle tail etc.
