  • The topwater popper is a Lure that we have all fished at one point in time, but a lot of us have stopped fishing it. However, it still works great!

    With the evolution of topwaters and so many different type of topwaters being thrown, it seems that a lot of people have stopped throwing a popper.
    With that being said I still believe that poppers are one of the best lures that you can use to catch a bass and there are times when they are the only topwaters that a bass will eat.
    A couple of big things to remember when fishing a topwater popper is how you work the bait and the speed at which you work the lure.
    There are times when the bass want you to work that topwater extremely fast and there are times when they want it extremely slow. One of the best things that you can do is just experiment with the cadence of the lure until you start getting bit!
    BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

    Storm Chugbug has been my favorite topwater bait for 20 years now !! Gets a good “bloop” on slack line a great splash on tight and they’re crazy easy to walk ! The species of bass you’re targeting also plays a roll in presentation. The smallies seem to react better to a big splash but largies seem to prefer the bloop or walk ( at least where I’m fishing ) Great content as always ! Love these videos

    • @joegrande4848
      @joegrande4848 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes because the kvd splash can imitate a bluegill when it makes the bloop noise. That's when there's alittle slack in the line. If you transition back an forth between a bluegill where it bloops an also have tight line imitating a shad catching large mouth will smash the bait

    One time I was camping and fishing at night. I was throwing a Rapala popper out into the middle of one of the lake arms and working it back to the bank over and over. I couldn't see where I was casting because it was too dark. Eventually something huge smashed it. I set the hook and the fish took off, all I could do was hold one and let it run while line was peeling line off my reel. The fish never jumped and ran for about 30 - 45 seconds and suddenly it stopped. I could feel that it ran me into something underwater as it was no longer pulling and just stuck. I waited for about five minutes but the fish never swam free. I ended up loosening the drag and setting my pole up in a rod holder until the next morning. When I woke up I went to check on the pole and it was still stuck in that same position. I lost my Rapala and whatever fish that was.

    I've been fishing for 45 years and have yet to catch a fish on a popper. They're even in my "confidence" lures box because I know I should be catching them. But I don't. Lol. I just don't have the knack for it.
    As I'm listening to this, sound helps. And of being hearing impaired that makes it difficult to hear much more than 20 feet away.

    • @Oldbasshole

      @RICK POWELL disagree, braid in clear water on a pressured lake will get you a skunk more times than not . Dirty muddy dark water with some reaction baits ( frogs especially) it does matter but if you’re only using 10 lb braid you better be ready to lose a lot of fish ( and frogs )

    • @Turlesy
      @Turlesy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @RICK POWELL
      I understand what you mean. Here where I live in Tx, the water is usually so dirty you could use a chain for line & I bet it wouldn't matter! Lmao
      However, I'm discussing the knowledge on reels' reaction most efficiently with different pound test line as far as casting goes. I use straight braid on everything for bassing! A uni knot flouro leader for crankbaits with trebles will give you a bet of stretch. I agree the rod plays a big part in it. Flouro leader in case of a skin or loose hook. Started doing that when spotted bass would rip loose of my crank trebles. They're mean. And it can't hurt to know your line is nearly invisible. When flipping into hard cover over chunky logs, you don't want a soft rod and 10lb anything. You're physically winching a fish out depending on how big it is.
      Furthermore, when heavy catfishing I've always gone straight braid (60-80lb) -> swivel -> 50-60lb mono. Not just for abrasion resistance but if you get snagged, you can break off just the hook and keep the swivel and weight.

  • @basskicking4532
    @basskicking4532 ปีที่แล้ว

    I believe that fishing is a personal confidence in the technique, lures and equipment each one uses for any given situation. Floro sinks and not ideal for top water lures but I guess with it being just a leader instead of the whole spool, it may not hurt. thanks again for the info bud! 👍

    A plain old rebel pop-r in Fire Tiger. Not there new version of Fire Tiger. But their original. Is hands down my favorite bait to fish and it always has been. I catch more fish on one of those and an Arbogast Jitterbug then I do on every other top water bait combined. Love em! I start every morning outing with the pop-r. Spitting it is my favorite way to fish it. And the blue thing sound mocks the bluegill popping on the surface as everybody hears when they're out fishing I believe

    Recently heard a tip on keeping braid out of front treble out of braid 2-3 bobber stops at knot does the trick. Have you ever used or had any success with Berkley Power Pop? Picked one up a new one the other day looked interesting. EWG hook, frog-like legs, popper style body but not hollow body more of a foam like make-up. Got one late last fall cast it a few times & went back to buzzbait figured it'd do better when bluegill started slurping bugs again in spring. Material did not react well to hollow body frogs and trailers I stored it with.

    Last year on my home lake the popper was the number one top water choice last year. I’ve never caught so many fish on a popper as I did last year. A tip for the noobs, if you’ve never fished a popper before you can’t work the bait to slow. 50% of your bites will come while the bait isn’t moving at all. I usually mix 1-3 pops and let it set for a minute or two. Fish will either bite right after a pop or after the bait has set still awhile.

    I've caught more and bigger bass on poppers than any other lures. It's my secret sauce. You all know when you have those perfect conditions, you can almost feel it in the fishy force guiding you to put the plug right where it needs to be for an immediate explosive strike. I don't get that with subwater lures. I catch fish with subwater lures but I don't get that intuitive prelude that I get with topwater, especially poppers.

    Video title makes no sense thumbnail makes no sense the word forgotten next to a popper that’s been fish since the 1860s when it was patented tells me even a bigger channel on TH-cam resorts to click bait and Deception then start talking about some thing that has nothing to do with the title or the thumbnail
