  • 1966 Dodge Coronet 500 426 Hemi-Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode #175:
This week, we are taking a look at a 1966 Dodge Cornet 500 that came factory equipped with the 426 Hemi V-8 engine. Not many of these were built, and this is a great example of a low mileage version found in The Brothers Collection.

Awesome ride. It doesn't get much better as far as Mopar's go. The early Hemi cars have always been my favorites(1966 Belvedere/Satellite, Charger, and Coronet)because they didn't have bright colors, stripes, graphics, spoilers, or fancy wheels and trim like many of the later Mopar's had. The 1966 Hemi cars are also my favorites because the Hemi started to become a little bit milder towards the end of their production run. In 1970 Chrysler started using a more emissions friendly hydraulic camshaft in place of the more radical solid lifter cam they used from 1966-69. Maybe my favorite muscle car ever made

My first ride in a high-perf Mopar was in a 440 Coronet that looked about like this one. A truly beautiful car! I was just a dumb college kid and took a ride with a wild man.....I wanted to kiss the ground when I got out of the car alive.

Back in the 90's my dad passed on a custom 67 Coronet HEMI car. It was painted a custom Plum Crazy purple from a 1970 color palette. Old lady selling it after her husband passed but my dad thought that it was just going to be too much of a project. Needless to say he's still kicking himself in the nuts today hahah

Nice Coronet, Dad had a '66 Coronet with only 318 but it did have a 4 speed. Sadly, It's been sitting in a field for 40 years. When I was a teenager we considered restoring it, but a tree fell on it, caved in the roof right over the driver's door. I'd sure love to find another one, I don't think I could afford one with a Hemi though!

I watch Mecum and Barrett Jackson quite a bit and it seems like the 1966 Belvedere/Coronet 426 Hemi cars sell for way less money than say a 68-70 426 Hemi Charger R/T or a 70-71 Hemi Cuda or Challenger for example. It seems like the earliest Street Hemi equipped cars sell for a hell of a lot cheaper than any of the 1967-71 Hemi cars...Roadrunner, GTX, Super Bee, Coronet R/T etc. Recently I saw a 66 Hemi Belvedere...a real documented Hemi car...sell for I believe $37,500. That's considerably cheaper than a Hemi version of any of the cars I named above from 1967-71 would sell for. A 68-70 Charger R/T 426 Hemi is easily a $100,000 car. A 71 Hemi Cuda Convertible sold for 3.5 million a few years back. Thats Just a couple examples

These and the 66 426 Hemi Plymouth Belvedere/Satellite are my all time favorite muscle cars. The definition of the term SLEEPER. The only year you could get the 426 Hemi in a base model mid size Dodge/Plymouth. Starting in 67 the Hemi was only available in badged muscle cars like the Plymouth GTX, Dodge Coronet R/T, and Dodge Charger

You said exactly what I was thinking ... a sleeper. Nice care.

Love the Coronets. I just got a 67 with a 318 and 727 that is getting a motorhome 440. I like the B body mopars over GM A body

    • @jeremythompson9122

Me too.My absolute favorite muscle cars are all B Body Mopars...a 69 1/2 Roadrunner or Super Bee A12 440 6 BBL/Six Pack...a 68 Charger R/T 440 Magnum...and a 71 Hemi Roadrunner. The 67 GTX and 67 Coronet R/T are at the top of my list too...the first true muscle car models offered by Mopar. Sure you could get a 383 or a 426 Hemi in a Belvedere/Satellite, Coronet, or Charger in 66 but the base engine for all of those cars was a Slant Six I believe. The Satellites base engine was a 273 I believe but I could be wrong on that. But the 67 GTX and Coronet R/T came with the 375 horsepower 440 as the base engine. I actually like the bare bones sleeper 66 Hemi Belvedere/ Coronet too. They looked like a taxicab or an unmarked police car but a Hemi Belvedere/Coronet was the fastest car on the street in 1966. And the little tiny 426 fender badges were the only indication of what you were about to get beaten by

My screen name might be for a Plymouth, but the 66 Coronet is my all-time favorite. This one is very close to exactly what I would have ordered had I been lucky enough to have been born about 25 years earlier. Beautiful car, y'all.

Yeah, the standard, pre-muscle car Mopars always appealed to me the most. In particular, a snot green '66 Belvedere four-door with bench seats, a Hemi, and a four-on-the-floor.

  • @summitdrinker

the 273 V8 was standard in the 500 model, but the 225 slant six could be ordered, the 225 slant six were rarer than hemi's. no 170 slant six's

Love these old Coronets,,,,wanted a '68 before a '69 Charger showed up one day. A kid used to terrorize our neighborhood with a car like with i believe a 383 in the late '60s. That was emough ;)
