I was in 8th grade when my brother drove into the driveway with a brand new bright red '66 Charger. I was in awe then and I'm still in awe of that car, still the most beautiful car I've ever seen! He wanted the Hemi but the dealer talked him out of it, convincing him it would be too hard to live with as a daily driver, so he got the 383 four barrel 4 spd. To this day nothing turns my head like a '66 Dodge Charger.
Most people didn't care for '66 - '67 Charger... '68 Charger was the biggest hit !!! www.executiveautori.com/imagetag/140/6/f/Used-1968-Dodge-Charger-RT.jpg
I FRIGGEN LOVE THESE cars ! We were teenagers and my friend had a red one with a 440 (a replacement for the blown 383) what a great car . Man if that car could talk, we used to sneak people into the drive-in in the trunk because that panel dropped down and you could crawl into the back. Four bucket seats way too cool and well ahead of it's time for sure .
I was completely overwhelmed by this car in 66. Got a chance to ride in the back seat of one. The driver’s right foot was heavy on the pedal and we went from party to party, tires screaming every time we took off from a stop. One of the most exhilarating rides I had as a 14 year old that I still remember and when I do, I find myself grinning every time.
My favorite car that I owned was a 67 Charger. Red, with a black interior. ...custom oredered car from Dodge.. Met the salesman who ordered the car... 440 Magnum. 727 auto. That car is awesome. The first time I saw one in the dealership I was amazed. Those four bucket seats and console were a smash hit. And it didn't matter which engine was under the hood, that car was way ahead of its time.
My buddy Bob has 2 Hemi Chargers.1 66 and 1 67 and I had a 66 Coronet to boot. Loved those beasts!!! He still has them, the 66 was a 1200 mile drag car in storage since the 60s and I remember when he got the 67 in the mid 80s. My 66 was left to a buddy when I left for the Army. Thanks again.
this is the most beautiful car I've ever seen! this and the late 60's chevelles are my favourite of all time. only in my dreams could I drive something like this lol.
Most all the cars of the sixties had huge trunks. I remember putting my 25 inch color console TV in the trunk of my "68 Catalina to take to the repair shop. I didn't even have to tie the trunk lid down. Sat the TV in there in the upright position and closed the lid........amazing!
It had a big trunk and many ways to add room with the fold down seats, the interior in the rear was kind of rounded a bit and with one or both seats down there was so much space. It was an amazing first for a car. Obviously the beautiful and powerful 68-70 Chargers will always be the talked about ones and there is a good reason but... These cars should not be forgotten about.
@@hatfez This was the really practical Charger, and I'd say most of the materials used in making this car were higher standard than in subsequent models. Could have used leather for the interior.
Thanks Kevin and to the guys of M.C.O.T.W.! Another fine 'Brothers' MoPar. I always loved this look. it brought several design cues from my 2nd favorite MoPar the '66-'67 Dodge Coronet. What's my all time favorite? A black exterior, tan interior, convertible, push button Torqueflite Automatic Transmission, with white walls, a 392 HEMI. THE 1957 Chrysler 300C!
Absolutely love these cars! My dad had a 66 charger red, with black interior, 383 and 4-speed. Have always wanted one of these but the prices are through the roof on a nice one now..
Still cheaper than a 68-70 Charger The 2nd gen is my absolute dream car but i will probably buy the 3rd gen Charger because it's the only one i can afford But i'm saving up for a nice 383 version because there's no way i'm buying a 318
I drove a 1966 charger with the 383 magnum in all black, all over Germany while stationed at Spangdahlem AFB. Couln't go anywhere without the german people wanting to look at it! Truly a special car.
It was a shame they didn't carry on the interior design theme with the later Chargers. I never knew about these rear seats or all the space the car had with the seats folded down until I just watched this. Way ahead of its time, and would have kept the Charger just that much more interesting if they carried on the same theme with the subsequent models.
Truly an odd and unique design. I know a lot of folks find these ungainly (to be kind) but I have always had a soft spot for the Gen 1 Chargers. Thanks so much for posting the video.
Absolutely one of my faves from back then and still is. I f i'd had the dinero when that was new -- I 'd of had one . Alas I was at home still and only 18. If in the market for a mid '60's car today that would be at the top of my list. I did have a distant cousin to that Charger in '68: a Fastback Barracuda Formula S 340 ....... with the same slopey and huge back window. With family and limited income it was all i could manage at the time.
One of my favorite cars of all time. I really wish that the new charger was a little closer to this one in design. Oh well, there's always the Audi S7. :)
My Dad thought he was going to buy a new '66 Riviera. Buick dealer was closed on Sunday. I was nine years old and insisted we stop at the Dodge dealer. Talked my dad into a Charger. He wanted one with a V8 badge on the fender (318). I was throwing a fit over a yellow 426 Hemi. We compromised on a red /black interior 383 4-barrel Magnum.
as kid in Canada north of Toronto, our neighbour had yellow 66 Charger. Black interior. With the hemi. From the first time I laid eyes on that car, I have loved it.
I love it. You really have to see that electro-luminescent dash lighting in the dark to appreciate it, compared to what everything else had. I think the 11” brakes were as good as you could get in 66, and they were very good, the disc brakes for the B body showed up in 67.
Back in 1974 my older brother came home with a 1967 Dodge Charger. It was a beautiful medium blue with a blue interior and the 383 2-barrel engine with the Torqueflite trans. The body and interior were perfect. I think he got it for $750. It was love at first sight for me. That dash with the 4 pods and a 150 mph speedo was so cool looking. But the first night I went for a ride and I saw that dash lit up with that beautiful blue lighting was so fine. It looks had been made even better with chrome slotted mags that really worked with that body style. To this day I think that is one of the coolest looking cars to come out of that era. That interior with the 4 bucket seats and that console that went from under the dash and back to between the rear bucket seats was never used by any other car to my knowledge. It's now almost 50 years later and I still get excited when I think about that car. You hardly ever see them anymore, even at car shows. If I ever had a windfall, I think I would make finding a nicely restored 1966 or 67 Charger a must.
I also had exactly that car- 1966, black with red interior, 383 4-speed. From '73 to '75. Second worse mistake of my life was trading it for a Blazer. Worse mistake was not buying it back 5 years later with a refurbished interior for $500.
Absolutely love it!! My dad was a chevy guy until this came out. Then he bought one and became the 6th mopar guy in our family. Now all these years later we are at 13, the number of mopar owners and less than 1 year from having 15.
My first muscle car. Forest green, 383 4bbl, disc power brakes, power steering, air cond, power windows, am/FM radio, 4 bucket seats It was ahead of its time. Loved this car so much. Wish I still had it!
My dad bought a silver '66 Charger and to this day the kids in the neighborhood all remember it. He took the family (with THREE kids in back) on road trips in it. Plenty of room back there for 3 young kids with no car seats to get in the way! I'm looking for a video of the engine starting to see if it sounds the same as it does in my memory.
love em! I had a '66 Coronet 440,close,but no cigar,i know, and a buddy has a '66 Hemi Charger 4 speed originally and exclusively a drag car from a major drag team back when it was new.she has just a tick over 1000 original miles on her only a quarter of a mile at a time. from what I remember of its history was she got 1 of the fenders crunched coming off the trailer pre-race.the team had a sister car with only a 440 in it,so they pulled the original Hemi race mill out and plopped it into the 440 car and she was subsequently shoved into the back corner of the teams garage until my buddy bought it in 1978.last i saw her she was still up on stands and he may've found the original block.he also had/has a '67 Hemi Charger automatic car,but the original block was replaced with a tired 383 when he bought it and was looking to track down the original block, last time I was there many moons ago. fun times. ☆☆☆
I love this car because in 1969, when I was a freshman in High school, my sisters boyfriend .. who was a junior, had a silver one. Back then, the older kids would cruise there cars in front of the school and he use to pick me up and we'd cruise around. I thought it'd be worth mentioning that the 1966 Ford Mustang fastback 2+2 had rear folding back seats that allowed storage from the truck to the back of the front seats.
My grandmother took me to the 64- 65 World's Fair in Flushings N Y. They had a silver one on display. You could actually walk up to it and open the door. At that time being 15 yrs old , it looked like a car of the future, not only because of the style but the fact it had square push buttons embedded in the trim to open the doors. At that time.........WOW ! ! !
LOVE IT!!! I was young and friends of my parents had one of these...silver with red interior, and I thought it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen! LOVED riding in those bucket seats in the back! I'll never forget that car.
Love the 1966 Charger. I had one in the late 80's had the 383 V8 automatic. Sweetest car I ever owned. Wish I still had it today. Truly a work of art. Nothing like it.
Great car for golf trips, radio delete is weird, AM/FM would be fine. How can anyone hate it. A four on the floor would be better for a lot of reasons, however.
Buy another one. I just bought a really nice 66 383 727 car a week ago. I looked for months for one I could afford. I haven't owned a car in 12 years because of medical problems so I can't wait to shred some tires. Only paid 17k for her and she only has 86k miles. Now is a good time to buy. Prices are low but they always go up on classic cars. Imagine, this car was probably less than 3k brand new.
I drove an identical car from South Boston to Cape Cod one Saturday morning with my buddy and our girls and i have never forgotten how awesome it handled. That power in what was really a mid-sized car was amazing. Thanks for the flashback. I wonder what happened to that car?
wow very nice ..gets me excited knowing mine will look like this. I have a 66 charger 383 4spd car blk with red interior like this. it's a project car but it's really solid.
Love this car. My favorite mopar. Maybe because it's like the 69 GS I own. A two year only body style (68-69) and the 66-67 Charger also being the same love or hate 2 year only body style. It just resonates with me. And this example is off the charts impeccable.
Had one when i was 22. Fold down back seats and the back panel thzt leads to the truck. You put your surf board in there. Wish i still had it now. Beautiful car in red.
Had a friend who owned one in 66, it was the fastest car I ever rode in. When he stomped the gas you were thrown back into the seat. He could powerbrake in the garage and fill the garage with tire smoke. Awesome car!
My buddy had a charger, another friend had the Impala fastback and I had a Torino GT with the fastback. That picture of the three of us parked side by side on main street is one burned into my mind.
I remember when this car came out. I turned 17 in 1966 and I was a bit of a muscle car fanatic. I prefer GM and Ford but the '66 Charger is one of the few Mopars I'd consider owning if I had a collection.
I had a friend back in around 1980 that had one of these cars! Beautiful first generation charger! It was a real head turner! Beautiful mopar classic!!!
When these came out there just wasn't anything like them. When I saw my first one, it was love at first sight. The interiors were beautiful. They looked so much better than their advertisements and set the standard for later Chargers.
In the late sixties I was a pre teen who was fascinated with spotting the various muscles cars from the back seat of the family car as we travel through out Texas. I rarely spotted a 1966 Charger. How many were manufactured.
My dad had one growing up. What they didn't show was the divider between the trunk and passenger compartment also folded down. We would sleep next to the fishing poles when camping !
l was lucky to see one close up last yr and probably talked the owners ear off :) The young man early 20s was more than happy to tell me about the restro he did to it 383 4spd dark purple metallic .He was at an outdoor car show with his mom and grandma ,he was good ol farm boy ,and big boy at 6 4 ,300lbs :)
My Mother had a white with the same red interior, unfortunatly it had the 318. I thought my mom was going to kill my dad when we came home one day and the charger was gone and my dad told us he had sold it. I saw the car three years later and it looked like a rust bucket from hell. Wisconsin is hard on cars. I have been looking for one in good shape but when i find one the people won't part with it. My high school welding teacher has a 67 green on green with a 383 auto, i have been trying to talk him out of it for years. I figure if I pester him enough maybe some day he will give in.
I had hoped to own a Charger (any from 1966 to 1970) someday. Well, I am an old man now, and am busted financially (becoming disabled at 46 years old doesn't lend itself to making money). I cannot see God allowing me to have one, at this point. But hey, that's okay. Plenty of videos online of them, along with the Woodward Dream Cruise every year to see some. Thanks for posting this video for us to see.
This and 67 and the 71 to 74 are my favorite years of the vintage chargers I read that the King said those 71 to 74 chargers were some of the best chassis he raced
6:30 - The sound of a 426 Hemi roasting bias-ply tires was heard often as I grew up in the 1960s. All of the high-power V8 engines had different voices from firing orders and other factors, but these Street Hemi cars sounded just right.
I've always loved these puppies so thanks for sharing this beautiful specimen. I like the backwards R/T on the Coronet. You should have folded the trunk down to show the length AND shown a night shot of the gauges. Something that's bugged me for a while but I've never seen mentioned... shouldn't it be Lbs/ft of torque? Thanks again. I (and many others) look forward to these videos every week and really appreciate 'em.

People sleep on the 383 but It was lighter than the 426 or 440 and topped with a 4 Barrel, it got out of its own way in a hurry....
check out my thumb nail. you described my car exactly.

Just be careful, after about 110 mph, without NASCAR wing, she lifts out back, so be cautious especially in rain or wind on curves.

LOVE IT!!! I was young and friends of my parents had one of these...silver with red interior, and I thought it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen! LOVED riding in those bucket seats in the back! I'll never forget that car.
What a wonder!! Beautifull car!!
Love the 1966 Charger. I had one in the late 80's had the 383 V8 automatic. Sweetest car I ever owned. Wish I still had it today. Truly a work of art. Nothing like it.
I rode around town in the back of one of these as a kid in the 70's. Child seats, who needs 'em? lol.
Great car for golf trips, radio delete is weird, AM/FM would be fine. How can anyone hate it. A four on the floor would be better for a lot of reasons, however.
TY Dodge for making a real persons car!
absolutely one of the most beautiful creations of the time.
No radio needed when you got a hemi esp.426elephant🔥💥🇺🇸💪💯
Beautiful Mopar
When dodge made quality cars. But the charger and the challenger are still very cool cars today
The '66 also had electro-luminesence lights in the automatic shifter & radio.
In '67, only the dash had them.
I just bought one. Cost me a pretty penny but she is gorgeous. I love that interior. Can't wait to take the grandkids on the ride of their lives, lol
Just got my 66 383 Charger today. She's a beautiful beast.
This was my first car. I absolutely loved it and would love to have one now.
60’s and 70’s cars were so COOL!!! Wish I still had my cars I had when I was young.
Love it.I had a 68 and a 73 .
Such a sweet interior.
Sweet
I had a 383 4 speed Red with a black gut!
Great car!
Hope your project turned out well, hemis are great, but, 383 is nothing to laugh at, RB FOREVER...
That picture of the three of us parked side by side on main street is one burned into my mind.
mid 1980s a 66 Charger was in parking lot of the high school in Middlesex NJ. I would always look at it
Luv It. Greatest of All Times.
Awesome. Brings back good memories when I was a teenager.
It has a beautiful interior especially in the back. I wasn't aware of all the open area behind the seats.
Did you know it also opens and folds down into trunk? Absolutely terrific when parked in the drive in movie....🤪🤪
I love the chargers of 1966-1974 but I never knew the '66 had fold down back seats that look that nice. Amazing
It's a wild car for sure. You don't see them very often!
Again, the divider between the rear compartment & trunk would fold down into the trunk.
Sleeps two!
Absolutely beautiful, I have always loved the 66 and 67 chargers
When these came out there just wasn't anything like them. When I saw my first one, it was love at first sight. The interiors were beautiful. They looked so much better than their advertisements and set the standard for later Chargers.
Always one of my favorite cars. That interior still looks like a lux option for today!
That is probably the best example of this gen Charger I've ever seen. I want it now.
I had 1967 Charger with a 383, it was a great cruiser.
Arthur Porrata I have a 66 charger with a 383. It's a project car and I haven't had it on the road yet but I can't wait!
Dream Car!!'
No, that snot a Dream car....this is your Dream car...th-cam.com/video/mDeehx3rBOk/w-d-xo.html
@@matrox Nope, 66 and 67 all day long for me and wjb111.
In the late sixties I was a pre teen who was fascinated with spotting the various muscles cars from the back seat of the family car as we travel through out Texas. I rarely spotted a 1966 Charger. How many were manufactured.
I finally got one then got another ❤️❤️ I love it from every angle!
My dad had one growing up. What they didn't show was the divider between the trunk and passenger compartment also folded down. We would sleep next to the fishing poles when camping !
Fabulous 66 Dodge, I Love it. Thanks Kevin
First memory I have of my dad and his Car is of him taking me for a ride in his baby blue 66 charger - I was 2 yrs old and boy did I like this car
classic , similar to my 67 mustang fastback but very unique styling
Who wouldn't like that car? Looks like a beast.
l was lucky to see one close up last yr and probably talked the owners ear off :) The young man early 20s was more than happy to tell me about the restro he did to it 383 4spd dark purple metallic .He was at an outdoor car show with his mom and grandma ,he was good ol farm boy ,and big boy at 6 4 ,300lbs :)
I used to drive a '69 Charger, but IMO the '66 was the best looking Charger and one of the best looking muscle cars ever.
Ever since 1976,when I got my383 4spd, it has always been my all time favorite.
Just saw one of these at a car show in Waco Tx.Same color except it was a four speed car.I like the styling myself. Those rear seat buckets are nice.
Gilbert Nowak what happened
Love it. Born in ‘66👏🏻🇺🇸
So underrated! LOVE THIS!
This is my ultimate car. The styling has no competition. Ford mustangs? Forget it!
66 Charger all the way!
I'm on the love side with this magnificent car. The interior with dual bucket seats is fantastic.
That's a real beauty. Love hearing that engine roar.
Disc brakes, radio and 4 speed. Beautiful car. Thanks
It haves no radio. "Radio delete". He said it's the only known 1966 black colored Charger without a radio.
Loved it… had a Platinum 426 HEMI model back in the 1970’s, sadly let it go because I ended up with two Chargers a 1969 440 - 6 R/T and the 67
