Gareth Edwards Dropped Everything to Direct the New Jurassic World Movie [Exclusive]

- Things are ramping up once again for one of the biggest franchises in movie history. It was just announced that Rogue One and The Creator director Gareth Edwards would be taking the reins to direct the recently announced next film in the Jurassic World franchise, and it seems like he’s thrilled about the position, something that pulled him away from working on his own original projects in order to take on such an opportunity.
At Collider’s FYC event for The Creator, moderated by Steve Weintraub, Edwards was able to talk a little about landing the job, which puts him next to industry greats like Colin Trevorrow, J.A. Bayona, and Steven Spielberg. With the news coming out so fast, he says he attempted to warn his family before it hit the Internet, though that’s a tough task in today’s day and age. “I tried my damnedest to contact my mum and tell her before it got on the internet,” he says, “and I did the same with my sister. I woke my sister up to tell her. I've left a message for my dad, but because of the time difference he's asleep. So hopefully he won't look on the internet when he wakes up.”
As every director usually does, Edwards also had great praise for original Jurassic Park director Spielberg, who he cites as “the reason [he] ever wanted to be a film director.” The chance to work on the franchise was one he jumped on immediately, even though he was set to step away from filmmaking for a while after the Oscars run for The Creator:
“I was about to take a break and I started writing my next idea for a film and this is the only movie that would make me drop everything like a stone and dive right in. I love Jurassic Park. I think the first movie is a cinematic masterpiece…so this opportunity is like a dream to me. And to work with Frank Marshall and Universal and David Koepp, who's writing the script, I think they're all legends. So I'm just very excited.”

Couldn’t have picked a more brilliant guy suited for the job. Godzilla is a severely underrated and overlooked monster movie, and the Creator was the sci-fi gem of 2023. His passion for the films alone is enough to be promising, I just hope that it’s reinvigorates the creativity and imagination of the original.
True, but, the holes in the plot, the lack of basic logic in The Creator was mind numbing, and killing off fkn Cranston while leaving us with charisma vacuum was something else.

@@Mogsillq The guy wasn't mid he was THE blandest he ever was! He was perfect for Kick-ass and even great in Bullet train, wtf was this I'm not sure. I bet you Cranston had a tight schedule that's why he got killed off. The MF is the heart of the film, O.Olson also did great with the little she was given.
Oh don't get me wrong, the movie was almost great! Not bad at all. Sure there was too much showing you clips of Godzilla on TV screen then the actual thing, but still the most realistic and scary one thus far.

Gareth Edwards and David Koepp are the ideal filmmakers to bring this franchise back to its roots and rescue it from the cynical, bloated muck that it's been drowning in these last ten years. Everything I've heard surrounding this project indicates that it will be something very special, akin to Fox's approach when they rebooted the Apes IP. Very happy for him and he has my absolute trust as a longtime fan of this series.

Yes, but i wouldn't be mad if he also picked Jurassic Park 3, while JP3 isn't a masterpiece like JP1, it has the best dinosaur designs hands down.
This makes so much sense. He’s so good at crafting thrillers and capturing scope, mixed with David Koepp writing it. Really hope Universal doesn’t botch this and force him to leave due to creative differences

When Masaaki Tezuka was asked to direct the next Godzilla movie, he acted professional and told Toho, he will think about it, when in his mind he was already set to do so and very happy about the chance.

Warner Bros didn’t let him do his own thing with Godzilla but the movie still ended up being great, hopefully he can do what he wants

And Monsters is set in a world where large potentially dangerous wildlife roam the mainland. Just like JW is since the end of Fallen Kingdom.

I wouldn’t go that far. David Gilroy was the actual savior, which is why Andor is so good.
@@tronam you mean Tony Gilroy? that conflict was for the Scripting for the movie and the Studio Heads intervening with the Script. the majority of the cinematography for Rogue one was Gareth Edwards and this time around the Script have already been written by the original Jurassic Park writer David Koepp. Edwards was brought in to just shoot not change anything in the script this time

Their stories wrapped up in the last movie, and the intention was that that was their happy ending, which Chris and Bryce echoed in interviews. Bryce said she would be open to come back far down the line the way that the original main cast did for Fallen Kingdom and Dominion. This next movie reportedly will not include them or the original cast anyway. Probably all new characters.

Hopefully the dinosaurs are not blink and miss like Godzilla 🤣 but honestly if he can stick to the original’s roots which is a serious critique of the blind spots of science and hubris, this may be special.

Remember; David Koepp's script is locked in and word is that Universal has been looking for a shooting director, so he wont have any influence on the actual story.
My theory is that they lured him in by promising full creative control over the inevitable sequel.

This news of Gareth directing a new Jurassic World movie is awesome considering everything else he's been behind, such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story especially!
Seeing how they butchered the last trilogy, I was annoyed that they were making more, but now that Gareth Edward's is attached, it has my interest. He did good with the Godzilla 2014. He has a Spielbergian style to it. I can see him doing well for Jurassic.

He said all the right things: The first Jurassic Park movie is indeed a masterpiece. Hopefully his movie is more in line with the first movie than a lot of the nonsense thrown into the later ones.

@@justaman9724 I don't want to see laser guided Dinosaurs for one. No stupid storylines (like selling Dinosaurs on a Mansión 🤦) and no humans surviving impossible odds like an exploding volcano...The charm of the original is that it felt real, like something like that could happen and it also helped that thanks to the animatronics the Dinosaurs also looked real. Thats what I want, I want the sense of awe that the first one had, I want to feel immersed in this world again.

Perfect Director! Been a fan of this guys since Monsters and a solid Godzilla movie. Even though he didn’t have 100% input on Rogue One but I loved it as well. I really hope they go back to the island and make it feel closer to the originals. Jurassic World did that but the last two were too over the top.

He's writing his next film , so of course he'd take up this director-for-hire job, so he can then fund his passion project. This Jurassic-film already has a release date , set by the studio. And a writer who is very hit and miss now in his later days. Not sure what to get excited about.
Hopefully they give him a lot of creative control & they don't shove a crappy script down his throat. The Jurassic World sequels have been horrible. It would be cool if he took a Rogue One approach & set the movie back in the 90s either before the events of the first film or immediately after. Either way, we need to go back to the island. People don't want a mainland setting.

I’m so baffled as to why they’re making another one after the concluding film previously, but if GE is attached and seems very keen about it, then it must have something promising about it. I just hope it’s vastly different to dominion which was a train wreck unfortunately.

I only got action figures back in the 90s as a kid but ever since Rogue One I've been squad building 3.75 action figures starting with the Dark Troopers = I got great faith in this director and to restore the franchise, hopefully no Kathleen Kennedy reshoots at the last minute crap

Gareth is amazing. He just lacks that speilberg quality of adding just the right scenes in a movie that fans can cheer or cry. The creator was so close but it was a little somber. Some levity with the kid and a one on one action set piece could have put this into a higher box office. Speilberg, Marshall and Koep know this.

You should have asked if he was gonna be an obnoxious asshole director making statements like: "we're gonna shoot it on film in 2D and there will be no cgi!!!!" Only to turn out to have actually done the complete opposite two years later when the movie comes out.
The three top questions I would asked is:
1. Will you return the franchise to its horror adventure origin?
2. Will the dinosaurs be designed according to actual science this time?
3. How important is familiarity and fan service?
I doubt that the dinosaurs will be Paleo-Accurate, unless it's a new creature.
It will be darker and more grounded then the past jw films
