Intro to Virtual Workspaces - Immersed

  • The Quest3 color passthrough opens new potential for working in MR or mixed realities. Immersed is a virtual workplace that lets you use your real world computer and keyboard with a set of virtual screens in a virtual environment with REAL colleagues. It's a concept that works, and there's a whole community of "virtual colleagues" who escape the isolation of working from home.
    This video was recorded straight from the Quest3, using the Q3's microphone and passthrough cameras. As noted in the comments, the Field of View (FOV) and resolution is considerably better in the actual headset.
    Check out Dave Boucher's rig for how to do this right!

    Great video man. I'm getting my quest 3 tomorrow so, these kind of videos are great. Hope to watch more of your content 👌🏻

      Thanks man - Congrats on getting the Q3!
      I really wish I had more ideas of what kind of videos to make! Any requests?

    Great video simple and to the point how would you rate the experience of using virtual screens instead of real ones ? sharpness , readablity, eye strain etc. I find Almost no one seems to go into detail on that as we would be in a very niche segment of users looking to use it mainly for work. Very tempted to pick one up at christmass for a versitile multi moniter setup ( and to watch the occasional 3d movie).

      Coincidentally - was just checking out TH-cam, and I'm actually replying to you from Immersed now :^) Because we can resize and rearrange the screens any way you want, I (and most of the users that I've met here) find it quite easy on the eyes. It actually takes more effort to arrange the "real" monitors on my desk to get them to the ideal height and distance for comfortable viewing. I also have lens inserts for the Quest3 that are more comfortable than my actual progressive lens glasses. For some reason, everything is in focus in VR, where in real life, I typically take my glasses off to view close up objects, and have to put them back on to read screens further away. The "real world" does offer higher resolution than the Quest3, but Immersed community are quite comfortable spending hours looking into the VR screens.
      Now the down side. The forward leaning weight of a headset does put strain on your neck. Also, twisting your neck to view side screens is not good for you in the long run. I and others that I know have suffered a nasty pinched nerves from craning my neck looking at monitors in the real world. So here's the solution - There are a few Immersed users who have rigged Gamer Chairs with keyboard rests so that they can lean back as well as swivel as they work. That helps with the neck strain immensely. I still have to try to rig that up.
      The bottom line - a good chair and a set of prescription Quest lenses make the headset a practical solution for long sessions! Dave Boucher is the master of rigging up a working office! th-cam.com/video/MbsaPjH9eCk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=QuPWsZPLuwEa7dAm

    Thanks for the video on Immersed and what it can do. And also mentioning the pricings at the end of your video. I mainly use my Quest 3 for VR gaming, but it is nice to know that this App also available and works with the Quest 3. I need to know more on Immersed what I can and can't do with the free version.
    Question: Are what you are showing in this video done with the FREE version of Immersed?
    Windows 10 does have virtual desktop (doing multiple screens) which I played around with a little bit, but does not provide the easy communications to other people and if I shut off the computer, all that I did on the Virtual desktop is lost. Does not save the screens, or never figured out if it could.
    I am retired, so it would not be used for any kind of work. I need to figure out if there is a valid use for me to need this kind of tool.
    Take care.

      Hello fellow retired guy!
      Everything I showed you in the video is available from the FREE tier of Immersed. If you use it for three 15 minute sessions in a ten day span, it will reward you with a "Pro Streak" and full capabilities.
      The extra screen space and relaxing environments are the biggest appeal. The regulars here also enjoy having virtual co-workers to share a room with.
      It costs nothing to try - I'd suggest visiting and trying it out first hand! People are generally friendly too!

    would the delay be tolerable if I were to use a laptop thats not connected to the router via ethernet cable? this really makes the Quest 3 really appealing to me since I edit (Photoshop, Illustrator) on my laptop most of the day

    • @NeoRetroVR
      @NeoRetroVR  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think so. I use a WIfi 6 router and was actually editing video in Davinci - the latency was NOT an issue!

    To clarify on these headsets, the field of view is larger than this, right? So in actual use, it'll look vastly different than recording video within? Because if head movement actually looks like this, I don't think I'd want to use ANY headset.

      much larger and better... i use it on mywork as a developer for seven hours a day.

      I bought a quest 3 last week. The recording is in the perspective of his left eye. what u see should be larger than the vid

    • @NeoRetroVR
      @NeoRetroVR  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yup - the field of view in this video is compromised for two reasons. 1. As @hongdong9434 pointed out, the recording only captures one of your two eyes - your right eye extends the horizontal fov. 2. The Q3's capture settings feature a "smoothing" option - It basically zooms in a bit, and tries to buffer or "absorb" some of my head motion so it's not quite as jerky. That zoom reduces the FOV that you actually get in headset.

    ive been trying to use immersed over the past 2 days... its really buggy for me and my monitor often duplicates twice - would you know whats causing this?

      Do you restart your computer each day? I had problems too, but found the glitches went away with a restart.

    ultrawide screen?

      @NeoRetroVR  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't seem to be able to generate a single ultra widesceen display, but I think it MIGHT be available with the "pro" subscription.

    as far as i know you can get Pro by just using the program 3 times a week

      I think that'll get you a week trial, but I think that only lasts one week. Great way to get us comfortable with the little perks like the VIP environment.

    Are you still using Immersed?

    • @NeoRetroVR
      @NeoRetroVR  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not as much as I'd hoped -
      It seemed to be a great way to collaborate and potentially share screens with others in a learning environment. The system isn't quite set up for that yet though. Sharing can only be done from one "host" room to their guests. Two way screen sharing and projection was a killer feature in my old tech classroom, and made for a robust learning community. Maybe it's to much to ask of a virtual environment at this point.
      I've met some fantastic IT workers and writers who use the Immersed environment daily to take advantage of their personal workspace, and to enjoy "virtual colleagues" - but I can work more efficiently on my three-monitor desktop setup at the moment. Just my two cents.

      I imagine that it'd be hard to go back to lower resolutions. Immersed is releasing it's 4Kx2 headset this year, promising that it'll be lightweight as well. I think that will be the ideal hardware if it can live up to it's specs!
