A forest is harder for the compression to work well, thus the current 100Mbps bitrate setting makes artifacting visible. They need to up the bitrate. DJI did say they are updating the firmware to allow a higher value. Check scenes where confetti is shot into the air. That will decimate most video streams due to the lack of compressibility.
Yep, those branches and light rays will make a fool of any bitrate not ready for them. I too heard DJI is dropping an update to give us the option of a higher bitrate, and if they do, that's just fantastic!
Edit: for more preciseness Just a correction here, yes higher bit rates means more data is allocated to each second of footage, allowing for greater detail, smoother transitions, and less compression artifacts, especially in fast action and challenging lighting conditions like forest where there’s a lot of details and sun peaking in or blocked at same time, etc, but that means the data is “less compressed”(not “more compressed”) with higher bit rates Gopro labs allows you to max out at 200mbps while A5 is maxed out 100mbps so this is what you see in videos where the motorcycle riders complain (fast action) and/or in forest with little lighting, the video is mushy and lack sharpness and details. What DJI compensates using lower bit rates is increase the sharpness, increase the highlights by cranking up the iso, and use denoising, so when you compare it to the AP in lowlight, it doesn’t shine. AP maxes out at 170mbps I think that the DJI engineers or the marketing team thought that they would sell hard on the longer battery life, but having lower bit rates doesn’t improve the power consumption as much as managing GPS, BT, OLED screen, and stabilization so kinda puzzled here why they would lower the bit rates and hoping that we don’t see the difference. The first thing I did was compared the specs line by line with the A4 and saw that it went from 130mbps down to 100mbps which for HEVC (h.265) encoders, for compression, you won’t see much difference on a small screen smartphone or when shooting static or low motion or 1080p, but with 4K, fast action or highly detailed scenes, and on larger screen, you will see the lower IQ
Yep, all correct. Out of camera it's basically 100mbps, 120mbps and 170mbps for the three competitors. As we've seen in a leak, the Ace Pro 2 will come bundled with 2 batteries, but no idea if they've kept the 170mbps or raised it.
People just like to knit pick stuff these days. The big 3, gopro, dji, ace will all get the job done. They are a pocket sized action camera, ephasis on action. People want these $400 tiny cameras to perform like a $1500 dslr.
@@JoshThompson25 Well, the Hero13 does almost everything right, except for the crap. And I would say that secretly everyone uses GoPros, regardless of what they promote. But DJI and Insta360 have not managed to deliver a properly functioning action cam. And it doesn't matter what budget or cam you're talking about, the focus should at least work. After all, GoPro can do it too🤣
@@JuiceBiker Ive had so many issues with Gopro that I will be changing to DJI. Freezing issues, turning on randomly and not being able to turn off so my battery is completely drained and it's too hot so need more time to cool down. Ive never had any issues with my other DJI products, pocket 2 and 3 and the mini 3 pro.
@@ArwinTours I understand exactly what you mean, I've been toying with the idea for years. But it remains just an idea, because the competition, i.e. DJI and Insta360, simply don't deliver enough detail. That doesn't mean that these cameras are bad, but they lack the dynamic range of details and so on. Many paid TH-camrs edit and edit and edit in order to ultimately send their material into the race against raw GoPro material and fool interested parties.
Maybe! It could be possible you're right. I think a LOT of users take their action cameras into forests though, so I think it's a place we should be testing more.
I totally agree! Maybe its time for youtube to update their compression codecs to make scenes like this look higher quality . But the hdr- processing, wich is happening in camera also doesnt look very pleasing. It raises the shadows a lot and puts in a lot of noise reduction. Maybe you should try shooting in log.
Well, this is the 13.5 stops of dynamic range working its charm, I'd like an option to turn off the hdr or whatever is being used for a more natural look. Sure, we can see what, 20 stops, but I don't expect my camera to see everything, it just looks too freaky and fake for me.
Hi - do you mind testing the Super Night mode again, but with 1080p 120fps please? I think lowering the resolution will increase pixel size (thereby absorbing a bit more light), while higher fps will aid with its computational stabilization. Thank you!
Good video. Would be nice to see the action 5 pro compare to 1x lens on the iphone in low light! (i know it's not as wide, but it holds up much more in dim light!)
Sport mode makes the shutter faster in order to not take too much blur, so in low light mode you shouldn't have sport enabled, you should have it in normal to have the frame take as much of the shutter speed down as possible. This is why in some shots you have a lot of jittering in low light mode.
Suppose the reason of not going to sunny forest is too much of contrast - actually what theoretically 13.5 stops of dynamic range should be capable to deal with
Nice content. Subscribed. Looking for a family light action/travel cam. Had gopro 7 black. Help me choose. Dji action 5 pro, insta 360 x4, insta go 3 s?
To be honest, for family fun the Insta360 X4 is superb. The Action 5 Pro is great too and can be thrown around with no worries. The Insta360 GO 3S is my favourite for family travel as it’s so small and I like attaching it to my children as they run around.
I would love to see more low light tests! Up that shutter and jitters will vanish. With this camera, it seems to work best at 1/120 with high iso. These seem to be the best settings for this camera: 4K 30, EIS at Rocksteady (not +), Shutter 1/100-1/8000 (this is very important, you can also use quadruple your frame rate to 30FPS at 1/120, 60 at 1/240, etc., Texture at -2, Noise Reduction at -1 or -2. In night mode, you can’t adjust ISO, but you can adjust all the others.
I'm afraid I'm gonna trade off the faster transferring footages from SD card to my laptop (the benefit of the low bit rate that DJI has claimed?) with which less fine details in my videos. Hope there will be a firmware update to fix the low bit rate issue sometime soon?
I've heard there is a firmware update coming, and I'm hoping it gives us the option for both, as 4 hours of battery life is superb, but I'd also like the option to have less battery and more image quality.
Like that you did some comparisons to an Apple iPhone. I actually like the Action 5 Pro better to a point. But who is going to use an expensive iPhone in circumstances where you wouldn't blink using an action camera. I am impressed with how well the Action 5 Pro holds up in the comparison!
Exactly. The iPhone camera is a completely different tool, for filmmaking it's amazing, but for specifically "action camera" style filmmaking, not so much. Thanks!
I shoot a lot in the forest as I hike quite often with my dog, our neighbourhood is riddled with forest/river trails. Not sure why they say that, looks good in the forest to me both DJI and Ace Pro ;)
@@PhillipSkraba hey brother i recently purchased DJI action 5 pro.. but how can i chance video codec ?? Do you plan overheating test of DJI Action 5 pro against competition? I think that I watched your video comparing DJI Action 4 vs GoPro Hero 12, and that DJI overheated first, because in Europe is limit for camera temperature lower than in rest of the world, and camera (DJI) stop recording due overheating...
I will do one when the next action camera is launched. Yes, DJI has a lower threshold when it geolocates to Europe, it’s not the camera but the location.
I know you are not sponsored. But I just got my action 5 pro, with a big reason being night filming. Compared to my iphone 13 pro max, and old phone, it is so much worse. I tried both video and super night. What could be wrong. How do you get similar image as iphone at night?
@@PhillipSkraba Yes, I did. I switched from video to SuperNight. It doesn't allow zoom in, and it only had 1080HD. I did it side by side with my 13 pro max and find it worse. The lower the light, the worse the comparison. If it is just under the full moon in the last few days when there is no light pollution, iphone can still detect a good amount of trees and colorful leaves. Action 5 almost gets nothing. Not sure what I didn't do right? Did you try very low light like only full moon natural light? Thanks.
Oooooh er…… there’s a water baby behind you at 00:31. DJI are going to raise the bitrate with a firmware update. It is struggling a bit with you in the trees. The night mode looks over sharpened to me as well. It’s not that pleasant to look at tbh.
haha, I don't even know how sneaky my son is! He constantly appears when I least expect it! Yes, I'm praying DJI give us the option to choose, battery life or image quality.
From 14:22 onwards, all the artefacts, the lights jumping around; the same issues with all fixed mount camera that are using EIS. Cant solve the issue of the needs of high shutter speed and lighting.
@@PhillipSkraba yes i did watch it in 4k… can you please upload a small 30 seconds video and share the link so that we can just check what comes out of camera directly
@@PhillipSkraba I watched it in 4k on my LG C4 OLED tv and it looks disgusting. Literally like 7-8 years old potato phone camera. I'm cancelling my order.
They probably tell you to not go into the forest because the lighting is weird it’s bright kinda but you’re surrounded by green , probably hard for the white balance to compensate. It’s not just an action cam issue tho.
Forest is hard for cameras because the lighting changes a lot and it's difficult for the camera to adapt to two different conditions - very dark spots and at the same time very bright spots so it is difficult to adjust between those two extremes. Also with the lights through the leaves, it introduces chromatic aberrations so you see more fringing along the edges. Nice review!
Yes, it's not an easy place for a camera to perform, but a vast amount of action camera users, bikers and hikers, they are mainly in forest areas, so I think us TH-camrs should spend more time in these places testing out action cameras. I love walking in the forest, it relaxes me so much.
I have seen lot of 5 Pro footages, and I must say that even at 1080p it does not deliver good quality, maybe because the sensor quality is not good or because of lower bitrates. It somehow forces you to record at 4K for at least a good footage. Also, I don't know why no one is in focus when vlogging n the Pro 5, I really get depressed :P
The sensor is good, I think it's rather the choice of lower bitrates. The Hero 13 runs at 120mbps, the Ace Pro at 170mbps, whereas at this moment in time the Action 5 Pro runs at 100mbps. Let's hope the next update gives us more options.
Oh yeah, you are right, bad sensor, shitty camera, nobody in focus, dji is just a brand, that can't do cameras ... irony off .... every word of yours is wrong, the sensor is great , and nobody forces nobody to anything. Go to the optician, so that your eyes will be good again.
I love this awesome action camera, waiting mine I bought from Amazon , thank you so much for this amazing video about the new Dji Osmo action 5 pro , God bless you and your lovely family as well, big hi to kids 💞
I think it's fantastic too. It may need a couple of firmware updates to get it to perfection and what the audience expects from it, but every camera goes through that.
I'm working on a very similar video hah! Supernight mode isn't it. I mean I guess it's better to have than not to have, but they may market it too much. The camera is nowhere near as bad as many reviewer make it out to me, especially in a world where this is used by travel vloggers, families, and sport enthusiasts. Their only mistake was calling it "Pro". I can't wait for the first 1-inch sensor action camera, which personally I would prefer over a Pocket 3. I honestly do not understand why it hasn't happened yet.
The camera is just fine, I don't get the hate on it from some people going crazy about the low bitrate. DJI will give us an update, they listen to the community which is great. I'm guessing heat. Heat is why it hasn't happened. A tiny box with a larger sensor is a baby oven.
When I bought my GoPro 12, the very first video was exactly in the forest and I ended up wondering what is wrong with this camera. It's challenging to process all the details, branches, leaves and varying lighting conditions under the trees, but when it comes to bright and sunny days outside, the shots are pretty amazing. However, I can't wait for your Ace Pro 2 review as you mentioned "it's almost perfect camera". Let's see what it brings to the table this time! 📷
Yes, the forest is a complicated place to be, but nonetheless important as a lot of us film there, so I think it's a good place to test action cameras and I should do it more. AP2 will be great!
I was looking forward to your take on Action 5 Pro - it's so hard to find an honest/unbiased reviews on YT for recently released stuff. I like how Osmo Action 5 looks in some scenes but I'm horrified of the look in certain other scenarios. There is so much going on computationally with all the video cams nowadays. Action 5 pro lens has a very pronounced flare. Which of the brands have the best hardware and optics in your opinion?
See, that's the thing, there is no camera that is good at everything. They all have their certain strengths, be it battery life, lenses, low-light, 10-bit, log, it's a choice one has to make depending on his/her needs. Insta360, DJI and GoPro are the only ones I'd choose from.
“Don’t test it in a forest” *Tests in Forest* THIS is why you’re my hero. I actually think it looks pretty great and it’s cool you can use DJI Mics. Looks great in all your tests. I found a guy who tested the low light and reduced sharpening and noise reduction and cranked the shutter to 1/240 or higher and ISO way up, the camera looked jittery free. I’m waiting on the ace pro 2, but definitely have my eyes on this camera. I have the pocket 3, so this may be a nice backup. I love my GoPro 12 in sunlight but it’s terrible in low light, as you’ve shown in your tests. Hmmm. Do more tests! I trust you so much.
I will be doing more low light comparisons, that's for sure. Great thing about this, is that it'll seamless match your Pocket 3 with D-Log M. Yes, every single one of these action cameras has its pros and cons. Always go into the forest!
@@nicksangetta8874 I call it “Sunny.” It was a bday gift from my family early this year so I’ll never part with it, and luckily I live in Southern California, so we get a lot of sunshine. It’s a daylight camera for sure, and it excels at this. I especially love the vivid color setting and in good light the stabilizer is amazing. It always goes with me for day trips. My pocket 3 is my low light cam. :) My next cam is very likely Ace Pro 2, though the Action 5 does look great IF you tweak the heck out of the settings. Ugh. No camera is perfect!
The SuperNight mode is bad, you will get a better low light footage if you adjust your own settings. Also, you will get a better quality image recording in D-LOG M. The Normal Mod of OA5 looks artificial compared to OA4, is not bad, but it seems they try to seek a "HDR Look", but I prefer the Normal Mod of OA4, looks natural. Hope they fix this in an update. By the way, nice video.
D-Log M at night is a tough cookie to deal with. I think most of the modes upto 60FPS have hdr, so I'm sure they'll probably give us an update to turn this on or off.
I saw a reviewer who shot at low light but put it in pro mode, adjusted shutter to 1/240 and cranked up ISO, turned down sharpening and noise reduction and EV -0.7, jitters all gone. Alllllmost ace pro. Almost. This camera is very jittery without tweaking settings.
@@babyboy1971 24fps (or 30fps), shutter 1/100, ISO Max 1600 (or 3200, but keep low as possible), EV 0, D-LOG M, Noise and Sharper turned Off, RS on, and you will get a nice footage even with a Action 3. I use this settings on my Action 4, and color grading on Davinci Resolve.
Forests are hard for cameras to show. The amount of extreme fine detail combined with lack of light forces high ISO and low shutter speeds. Unless you know what you're doing with manual controls forests can just be a nightmare for auto exposure and white balance settings.
Came here for a camera review. Main take away - your kids really DO rule at jumping off things 👍🏻 just kidding (although they do). This was a great test. Audio much better than I expected. Overall it’s better than older cameras (my hero 9 is useless in low light). Not perfect, but maybe the best there is for the price ?
It's very bad i'm disappointed. Hope they'll fix everything with SW updates. Low light looks just very bad, fake hdr is terrible. 0:10 what is that why this ugly outline glow on the edges of the building? It looks very cheap, action 4 didn't do anything like this. When it's bright outside still looks good.
When it's daylight it looks solid, I don't get what people are on about, it looks good. The lowlight is a problem I think, it's like it's on high iso, at a low res, with sharpness pulled right up, not sure what's going on there. Hopefully something that gets fixed.
In daylight the trees look too light and hdr glowing on the edges. (mostly noticeable in the forest when looking up at sky). Trees are overexposed almost yellow and glowing
I think the details are there, and if DJI open up an option for a high bitrate like in GoPro and Insta360 then I think that will make a lot of people happy.
For me it looks like it has been too processed, you can see it in the leaves, but maybe that's why the producers don't want to go into the forest with cameras, because that's where problems appear. For example, for me, when a GoPro sports camera in the forest slowly starts to have problems with stabilization, there is much less light, not to mention the drop in quality. I can't wait for Ace Pro 2. Action 5 looks much better than Hero 13, but I feel that it will be interesting with Ace Pro 2.
The Ace Pro 2 is awesome, but so is the Action 5 Pro, they're just two very different tools, which have pros and cons, neither is perfect at everything, but they are the best at what they specifically do. I am aware DJI is bringing out an update very soon to hopefully give us a little more bitrate.
@@PhillipSkraba I think that for such small and cheap devices (let's be honest, looking at the prices of photographic equipment), these devices are amazing and, despite small compromises, they are the perfect amateur vlog and sports camera. I'm talking about action 4/5 and ace pro, because gopro hero has a few things that make you feel like you've gone back in time when you see it for the first time.
@@PhillipSkraba I bet you cant say anything about Ace Pro 2 yet, but that camera never made any sense to me due to the flip screen. People complaining about action cameras beeing bad for vlogging is silly because they are not made for close up shots anyways, but the Ace Pro was sort of trying to be a vlogging camera with that screen so my question is: Will they have some sort of auto-focus or close up lens to cash in on what people have been wanting from an action camera for years now? Just say it in a cryptic way if insta360 is listening. hehe
@itsonlytheinternet I can’t say much, but minimal focus has definitely been improved. I wasn’t a fan of the flip-up screen, but I’ve come to love it. I think nowadays most of action camera customers are vloggers, and very few actual sports enthusiasts.
@@PhillipSkraba Alright :) I both love and hate the screen. Awesome for just filming on vacation/casual stuff and hiking, but for dirtbike riding and actual action sports the screen is just a worry and after all that mud, sand and snow i put mine through the screen is not smooth to open anymore and creaks so for that stuff i grab my OA4. Just found it really interesting how they kind of made the perfect vlogging camera that people so desperatly are looking for, but made the minimum focus distance even further away than gopro/dji. very excited to see the if they manage to win the hearts of vloggers with the 2. Maybe even Camera Conspiracies will be happy with it (press X to doubt).
The battery life is excellent, but GoPro and Insta360 have also improved theirs too. I'd say the playing field is pretty much level, it's now down to what you want from a camera.
Well, that's why I showed a few shots vs the iPhone 16 Pro Max, so I could get that out of the way as the Action 5 Pro behaves better in "action camera" situations.
I appreciate your video and efforts. But like so many other action camera testers out there, you are walking around vlogging! DJI action cameras are not particularly designed for vlogging. They're simply not designed for the vlogging you're testing them for. They're 'action' cameras. You haven't entered into even one activity! What on earth is real world about someone walking around (with an action camera, not using it for action) and talking into a video camera? Mostly here, you're walking around on mostly empty parks and empty footpaths! If you want to test vlogging cameras test vlogging cameras! If you want to test DJI action cameras, get some action going. Please don't misinterpret the design of an action camera. I hope this information helps. Atb, eGaz
I challenge sponsored creators to make videos using raw footage without any editing. This way, viewers can see the true quality without bias. Another issue I find is jitter/jello while filming on the bike especially in low light. It sucks tbh. 13:11 (purple swans)
All my sponsored videos have raw footage without editing, and in this "not sponsored" video all the footage is also raw without editing. Yes, in low light jitters are a thing on most cameras. Those are flamingos!
Yes, I noticed that when I was editing, and the bitrate seems really, really low in lowlight, so I'm hoping DJI can give us a little more quality as I've heard there is a firmware update coming. Personally I'd prefer more quality less battery, so if we can have that option added I'll be over the moon as it's a fantastic camera.
@@PhillipSkraba Precisely!! It’s always the quality that’s needed in this camera category. Regarding lowlight, for me they already did it better on the OA4, they don’t need to crank it up further in the 5 pro, unless they’ll use bigger sensor.
I think because in forest color balance of white & tint is sometimes bad. Also in green location even skin tone is not good. As a professional photographer I say - in green forest everything want to be green)
Very interesting video, great job!👍I let an abo here. For me, the iphone performs better than the Action 5 in every day normal videos, low light and sound. This is no problem, because the Action 5 is an action cam, and not build for every day videos.
Yes, two very different tools. I'd not throw the iPhone around like the Action 5 Pro, and I'd not get the same clean shot out of the Action 5 Pro like I'd get out of the iPhone.
@@PhillipSkraba They really have. I’ve been taking mine out for the odd vlogging shot or 2 since Friday to get stuff towards a first impressions, but what I really want to do at the weekend to finish it off is chuck it on an FPV drone. This will be done! It’s been terrible weather, so everything I’ve shot so far has probably been either grey or actually raining.
@@PhillipSkraba Haha sorry dude, I’ve changed it to “terrible”, although too late now. Looking forward to trying it! Have seen a few videos using it but there’s nothing like testing it yourself. Plus, I get to fly that way. Win win.
While at first glance the video image quality just looks a little soft if you look just a little closer it’s actually pretty BAD. For years I’ve been taking frame grabs from my GoPros and this past year from my Insta360 Ace Pro for very good photos. This is a deal breaker for me with my new Action 5 Pro. Frame grabs are garbage photos from my Action 5 Pro! Try this yourself. Take a short 4K video clip with default settings with your GoPro, Action 4, or Insta360 Ace Pro then grab a frame to photo. Open photos in Gimp, PhotoShop or whatever you use for photo editing and zoom to 100% resolution. You’ll see all look OK but Action 5 is garbage. If the possible firmware upgrade upping the bitrate to 120 or more doesn’t fix this quality degradation then mine is going back.
Well, they had 130mbps on the Action 2, 3 and 4. They had 100mbps in the Action 1 and now in the 5 Pro. I've been told it's for battery life. Personally I'd like the option to choose between battery life and image quality. I've heard we will be getting an update soon, and hopefully it will include this.
@@PhillipSkraba I like the turquoise, but in the normal 10bit colour mode on the A5 the sky has a purple pasty pastel quality, not an appealing blue like the A4.
@@PhillipSkraba I believe. But I think that is result of camera trying to properly expose your face in shade, and when light source suddenly became stronger, skin tones change artificially. Although I like your chanel and reviews, it is noticable that DJI Osmo Action 5PRO has own weak points (as all the other cameras). I personaly think that GoPro is currently better in terms of video quality. I was on the verge to buy DJI Osmo Action 5 PRO, but I've decided to wait, to see is there be improvements with the future updates.
Well, I'm a big fan of the Hero 13 myself, and think it's an excellent camera. I'll be doing a comparison very soon between them all so you guys can decide for yourselves.
@@zarko.stamenkovicI have it. Im testing it in vacation and You are right. Sometimes in underexposed areas your face becomes too red. But it is so easy to use. Another cool feature that white balance sensor in "O" and the quickness with it reacts to underwater scenario and back to air scenarii is so impressive. Auto means that overdone hdr. You can set framerate in Manual mode but leave iso 100-800 and it will compensate by iso in some way but the dark areas will be dark, so it should be dome in d-log m and put some post work. I have a look at my videos fullscreen on monday. Cheers 🖐
WoW. I think that night video looks OK until you compare it with iPhone. It is nowhere near the OA5. There are no details on iPhone (sidewalk looks like one giant splash of orange) half of the image is blury and the flamingos ... ;) Sound is also far better on OA5
Yes, I totally agree, mind you if you pixel peep the Action 5 Pro is crazy over sharpened and full of artefacts. It's a tough cookie to crack, night shots.
I have researched the whole bitrate thing on the OA5Pro, and whilst DJI have lowered the bitrate from 130mbps to 100mbps for battery life I haven't noticed a difference, daylight still looks superb. It's funny as the Hero 13 has 120mbps and the Ace Pro has 170mbps, but then you've got 10-bit vs 8-bit, and it's 4:2:0 10-bit, and they you've got f2.8 vs f2.6 vs f2.5, and then you've got 1/1.3" vs 1/1.9" sensors, it's a massive mess in my mind, but at the end of the day it all seems to even itself out. I hope the new DJI update gives us the option for a higher bitrate and less battery life.
The bitrate and data gets the "confetti effect" in the woods where there is a lot of details and on youtube it looks terrible on most cameras. Thanks for the real review. Honestly, I will not buy this camera. I had higher hopes
I think that could be one of the problems, yes. However, I'd keep my mind open as I've heard there will be an update to increase the bitrate, which will help with the confetti effect. I like the camera, I think it's very nice.
It's a completely different sound. In the studio the iPhone sounds amazing and I actually use it a lot when I'm out of the studio and need to record voice over, it does an exceptional job.
The problem with this camera is that it is not 100% perfect in every way(no camera is) and that enrages people who thought this would be the last camera they would ever have to buy. The bitrate-paranoia is spreading and soon DJI will give in to the angry mob. That will cause overheating and less battery life so DJI will try to calm people down by copy-pasting random answers on the forum, but it will only fuel the mob and soon enough it will be as bad as the great battle of the close focus way back in 2023. Then suddenly a new camera will be released and all is forgotten..until next year when the cycle starts again because it turns out that Action 6 elite pro max super is not perfect either.
...and that's the thing!!! These are tools. Each one is different. You have a job to do, you choose the right tool for that job. GoPro, Insta360, DJI, they all have similar products, but they are all tools for different jobs as they concentrated on different strengths for each camera. There is no perfect camera, but DJI has one of the best.
I hope it will be a switch. High for those that want quality and Low for those that prefer longer battery life. One of my other action cams have that but don't recall which one.
@@PhillipSkraba in all seriousness there is only one really big mistake DJI made with this camera and that is the added "pro" because it really is the perfect camera for "amateurs" with internal storage and ease of use. No need to buy anything extra, just go in a store and you can pretty much start making great looking videos right out of the box without opening any hatches or knowing anything about SD cards. The "pro" only set it up to fail as people got way to high expectation.
The thing is, I really would like to use an Action Cam as my Pocket Cinema Camera for nature trips. But the quality even with the newer models like the Action 5 Pro or perhaps the Ace Pro 2, always looks a bit to digital and muddy for me. The Pocket 3 is so much more cleaner, smoother and natural looking. It’s almost on the level like a Sony ZV-E10 II. This is so great for cinematic videos on the go. But unfortunately the Pocket 3 is not water proof and very fragile. I love how robust and weather proof Actions Cameras are. But the quality is still to bad. Even though we have 2024. I think without a Jump in Sensor Size, it will always look to digital on Action Cams. I don’t care about fixed focus. From my perspective they can put a 1inch sensor with Auto Focus into an Action Cam. I know this would be not practical when shooting “action”, but it would open more opportunities in terms of quality for cinematic shots on the go. I wish these camera companies would bring more products towards this direction. Instead, we rather have Action Cams or heavy Mirrorless Cameras. The Pocket 3 is the only outsider which is between these both worlds.
New DJI 5pro Colin's 70% battery life bed time perhaps 10pm early morning battery gone dead why why ? Colin's very upset help brought from Amazon perhaps sending back ? Perhaps broken ?
I don't even watch this video that shows a downgraded version of the DJI Osmo Action 4. And the Osmo 5? With a lower bitrate? What a joke! 😂😂 If you already own an Action 4, please don't upgrade! Peace!
@@PhillipSkraba I can deal with shorter battery life for better quality, I just hope A5 doesn’t overheat due to the added bitrate…
Edit: for more preciseness
Just a correction here, yes higher bit rates means more data is allocated to each second of footage, allowing for greater detail, smoother transitions, and less compression artifacts, especially in fast action and challenging lighting conditions like forest where there’s a lot of details and sun peaking in or blocked at same time, etc, but that means the data is “less compressed”(not “more compressed”) with higher bit rates
Gopro labs allows you to max out at 200mbps while A5 is maxed out 100mbps so this is what you see in videos where the motorcycle riders complain (fast action) and/or in forest with little lighting, the video is mushy and lack sharpness and details.
What DJI compensates using lower bit rates is increase the sharpness, increase the highlights by cranking up the iso, and use denoising, so when you compare it to the AP in lowlight, it doesn’t shine. AP maxes out at 170mbps
I think that the DJI engineers or the marketing team thought that they would sell hard on the longer battery life, but having lower bit rates doesn’t improve the power consumption as much as managing GPS, BT, OLED screen, and stabilization so kinda puzzled here why they would lower the bit rates and hoping that we don’t see the difference.
It looks great. Can’t wait for your Non sponsored Insta 360 video! 🤓
hahaha, don't tempt me!
If this looks great to you, you only prove you are a sellout. I cannot believe you look at this footage and say this with a straight face?!
Any idea when it's getting released?
Both Pete and I have an idea, but we're not allowed to say.
@PhillipSkraba at least say if it's.worth to wait for it before we jump to action 5
This is by far the best non sponsored review I have ever watched. Very nice and authentic! I am now a subcriber.
Wow, thank you! Welcome to the channel in that case!
After all, GoPro can do it too🤣
Yes, exactly. Each one will get the job done, however each one excels in different scenarios.
@@JuiceBiker what's not properly functioning about the osmo?
The compression ruins the image, I think. Thats why they have told you not to go into a forest. It cant hold up with the fine details of the branches.
My GP12 on 5k kicks ass in the forest. I love it.
Yes, it sucks in low light though.
Not enough bitrate during the rendering *......*
A very happy and informative video. Thanks! I appreciate the relaxed vibe of your channel.
Thank You, I'm glad to hear that!
Hi - do you mind testing the Super Night mode again, but with 1080p 120fps please? I think lowering the resolution will increase pixel size (thereby absorbing a bit more light), while higher fps will aid with its computational stabilization. Thank you!
I’ll see what I can do, thanks!
Good video.
Would be nice to see the action 5 pro compare to 1x lens on the iphone in low light!
(i know it's not as wide, but it holds up much more in dim light!)
I might drop something as soon as they let me out after dark, that's the hardest part.
Sport mode makes the shutter faster in order to not take too much blur, so in low light mode you shouldn't have sport enabled, you should have it in normal to have the frame take as much of the shutter speed down as possible. This is why in some shots you have a lot of jittering in low light mode.
Yes, correct.
Hey Mate. Great reviews. Thank you for sharing. Can i ask you? Are you using any especial gimbal when walking and filming yourself? Cheers.
Thank You, oh no, I walk around with no gimbal at all. I have about 10, but I use them on rare occasions where I might really need to use one.
@@PhillipSkraba wow that’s great! Good to know, it’s gonna save some $$$. Cheers. Thanks for your response🙏
Your reviews are some of my favorite. So clear and honest... thank you!
Thank You! I do my best to get everything across just how it's meant to look.
Suppose the reason of not going to sunny forest is too much of contrast - actually what theoretically 13.5 stops of dynamic range should be capable to deal with
Yes, contrast is crazy as well as details, but it’s a good test on an action camera. I think I’ll be returning here more often for tests.
@PhillipSkraba many thanks
I would love to see more low light tests! Up that shutter and jitters will vanish. With this camera, it seems to work best at 1/120 with high iso.
These seem to be the best settings for this camera:
4K 30, EIS at Rocksteady (not +), Shutter 1/100-1/8000 (this is very important, you can also use quadruple your frame rate to 30FPS at 1/120, 60 at 1/240, etc., Texture at -2, Noise Reduction at -1 or -2.
@@PhillipSkraba The lower bitrate the longer time batteries last?
@@mrthesan That's the explanation from DJI, yes. It would make sense.
@@PhillipSkraba Roger that
Is there a linear profile ? And is that what you used ? I’ve seen some shots look linear and some look like a fisheye lens
Yes, dewarped which is basically linear, it’s pretty clean. Wide and Ultrawide. A nice set of lenses for everything.
I think a lot of users shoot in the forest, especially bikers and hikers, and yes, both DJI and Insta360 look great in the forest!
Whats your opinion its value for money should i buy it or should i have to swtich to another action camera ? If yes Also suggest another camera please
The Action 5 Pro is an excellent camera, go get it. The only other one I can recommend is the Ace Pro 2.

@@PhillipSkraba thank you. Yes I've read about this, and your video was very helpful. Looking forward...
I know you are not sponsored. But I just got my action 5 pro, with a big reason being night filming. Compared to my iphone 13 pro max, and old phone, it is so much worse. I tried both video and super night. What could be wrong. How do you get similar image as iphone at night?
Really? It should be better, it’s better than my iPhone 16 Pro Max in low light. Are you using the SuperNight Mode?
@@PhillipSkraba Yes, I did. I switched from video to SuperNight. It doesn't allow zoom in, and it only had 1080HD. I did it side by side with my 13 pro max and find it worse. The lower the light, the worse the comparison. If it is just under the full moon in the last few days when there is no light pollution, iphone can still detect a good amount of trees and colorful leaves. Action 5 almost gets nothing. Not sure what I didn't do right? Did you try very low light like only full moon natural light? Thanks.
Is it loose pixals when we set it on rocksteady and rocksteady plus mode ?
Does it loose pixels? Nah, it crops in a little to do a little magic.
What about the image quality and photography?
It's okay, though an action camera always feels awkward when it comes to photography.
@@PhillipSkraba could you please share some samples?
Can you test supernight mode vs regular mode? Supernight is too overexposed and oversharpened, plus has microjitters
I did show them, one after the other, but I'll be testing them out more, sure. I think I'll wait for the DJI update for higher bitrate.
@@PhillipSkraba awesome thanks!
Does the Osmo Action 5 Pro do well enough in low light in night mode?
It does fairly well, yes. A little over-sharpened, but it can pretty much see in the dark.
Oooooh er…… there’s a water baby behind you at 00:31. DJI are going to raise the bitrate with a firmware update. It is struggling a bit with you in the trees.
The night mode looks over sharpened to me as well. It’s not that pleasant to look at tbh.

That was the main camera.
From 14:22 onwards, all the artefacts, the lights jumping around; the same issues with all fixed mount camera that are using EIS. Cant solve the issue of the needs of high shutter speed and lighting.

@@StringerBell probably there is something wrong while editing or exporting... I have seen other youtube videos and footages look quite good
it might be that mine is unedited.
They probably tell you to not go into the forest because the lighting is weird it’s bright kinda but you’re surrounded by green , probably hard for the white balance to compensate. It’s not just an action cam issue tho.
I honestly love filming in the forest, it calms me down.
@@PhillipSkraba I agree
Are you using any nd filters?
I am not, no.

Quick question please, which is better for travel TH-camr, action 5 or pocket 3?
You can tag me to your review please. Thank you
The camera is just fine, I don't get the hate on it from some people going crazy about the low bitrate. DJI will give us an update, they listen to the community which is great. I'm guessing heat. Heat is why it hasn't happened. A tiny box with a larger sensor is a baby oven.
That depends on what YOU want, your use case scenario. Two very different cameras, for very different uses.
@@PhillipSkraba totally! I’ve seen videos comparing the Bitrate and its literally pixel peeping hahaha
Yes, I just watched my friend Jake Sloan do a little comparison and I can see the difference, but I think DJI will drop an update very soon.

Warto czekac, ale nie na OP4, raczej na AP2 co pojawi sie niebawem. Za to Pocket 3 to naprawde super sprzet, tak jak i ta kamerka.
@@PhillipSkraba Thank you!

THIS is why you’re my hero.

@@imzaazmi Your thoughts on the camera mate?

I disagree. The Action Pro 5 has the BEST low light footage I have ever seen, at least for an action camera.
Great testing, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Forests are hard for cameras to show. The amount of extreme fine detail combined with lack of light forces high ISO and low shutter speeds. Unless you know what you're doing with manual controls forests can just be a nightmare for auto exposure and white balance settings.
I like the Z axis on this camera, when I had the Action 4 I noticed it was great also.
It's good.
The lower light combined with the many leaves can create serious moire.
It can create a pattern sometimes, yes.
Great video 📸 Really appreciate! 🎉👍😺

People just need to understand this camera just came out and they are going to fix all the problems this is a great camera and for the price too
Yep! I fully believe in that because DJI are excellent at updates.
In daylight the trees look too light and hdr glowing on the edges. (mostly noticeable in the forest when looking up at sky). Trees are overexposed almost yellow and glowing

It’s the details that are mud out. It can’t pick it up in a way that showcases quality, as quality is measured by details

I think that for such small and cheap devices (let's be honest, looking at the prices of photographic equipment), these devices are amazing and, despite small compromises, they are the perfect amateur vlog and sports camera.
@@syarizansulaiman6554 The 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max have the same cameras, so what you've seen in my video is what you get.
Atb, eGaz
I thought Oscar had a rock and wanted to see the ducks 😂
hahaha, that is exactly what he'd want to do! Such a little devil!
Low light and super night is bright but looks bad. :(
It's quite pixelated and then over-sharpened in my opinion, but it does get the job done, low light is well exposed.
Those are flamingos!
no nareszcie!
No musialem sie nachodzic!
Still got those annoying jitters on the background.. hopefully DJI could fix this in firmware updates. 😮💨🙏🏻
Yeah super night mode is a good added feature tho’! But I won’t use it as it is and just have your own custom lowlight settings! 👌🏻
@@PhillipSkraba yeah, our big hopes for the upcoming firmware updates🙏🏻
And the latest update have done it lot better. Waiting for black friday pruce. So i have that and pocket 3 to film with
The latest update has helped, yes.
Great little camera isn’t it?!
I like it! Mind you, I've liked all the Action series since the original. DJI did a good job.
Well shit, you guys have got to stop swearing, TH-cam throws it straight in the "held for review" box. It'll be nice on an fpv no doubt!
@@PhillipSkraba Haha sorry dude, I’ve changed it to “terrible”, although too late now. Looking forward to trying it! Have seen a few videos using it but there’s nothing like testing it yourself. Plus, I get to fly that way. Win win.
Always win win!
@@PhillipSkraba Fingers crossed :-) Your honest reviews are why I subscribe to your channel. Thanks for that!
Thank You!
Watch me using supernight in bright conditions.. 😊
You monster!!
If they could fix the sky’s pastel look in the normal colour mode.. maybe next update…
DJI does tend to turn the sky turquoise, I think it’s part of their colour science. It makes you feel like you’re in California, which is nice.
@@PhillipSkraba I like the turquoise, but in the normal 10bit colour mode on the A5 the sky has a purple pasty pastel quality, not an appealing blue like the A4.
I'm guessing this is something DJI are constantly working on.
There's micro jitters in supernight mode.
There are micro jitters in SuperNight mode, yes. It's hard to get rid of those.
In forest everything is fine to the moment when sun hits your face. Suddenly your skin becomes red.
Yeah? It was hot!
Nice video
Thanks!
Forest = 😮 AWB
AWB all the way on action cameras, as I'm guessing 99% of people will be doing the same.
Nice color, looks like very minimal artifacts.
I hope the new DJI update gives us the option for a higher bitrate and less battery life.
eh I thought it looked a bit soft in the forest scene TBH
Might be TH-cam compression, it always plays games with tree details.
That audio on the iPhone 16 is trash, everyone has been talking about that being a great feature, hasn’t played out that way
It’s not bad, it really isn’t.
@@PhillipSkraba compared to DJI, I thought it was
It's a completely different sound.
I think they wanted to be part of the gang. goPRO, acePRO, ActionPRO. It's a gang, and they're the best.
@@PhillipSkraba haha that might be it.
Looks good, I always walk in the forest.
Me too, big fan of taking the kids for a walk in the forest.
The cheap Action 5 kills the iPhone 16 Pro Max in video and audio. Who would have thought?
...but can you call people on it?
Poor image quality at this low bitrate :-(

An action camera with autofocus is an accident waiting to happen. AF parts do not like rough treatment.
Why 25fps 60 is better
I shoot everything at 25fps.

No idea, send it back.
I don't even watch this video that shows a downgraded version of the DJI Osmo Action 4. And the Osmo 5? With a lower bitrate? What a joke! 😂😂 If you already own an Action 4, please don't upgrade!

Fingers crossed that bitrate gets increased in the next firmware update.
