On the DJI forums one of the devs for DJI was replying to questions about the bitrate. They stated that the reason they kept it low was to keep file sizes small, and with the more powerful chip they could get better footage despite it being lower bitrate than the 4. After seeing people post footage with compression artifacts, he agreed that they need to give users a high bitrate option and that will be coming in a FW update.
As a programmer in IQ , i'd like to say, for eg. an iphone just have a 20mbps bitrate, but still have a pretty good image quality. Actually when bitrate higher than 20mbps, that's all about the code capacity, which rely on chip platform (like apple A chip or Qualcomm 8 gen are excellent in code capacity), have nothing to do with image quality, but the insta acepro with Ambarella platform CV5 are notorious in code capacity, way way worse in bitrate control.
@@RocaTT1456 They are using the 4nm Qualcomm QCS8550 which seems way overkill for this application. My only thought is that don't have a full grasp how to use it yet, since I believe in the past they used homegrown silicon. So they shipped with what they had, and FW updates will take advantage of this beast of a cpu.
The thing with DJI is that they're always innovating their products. They do always leave something off their products and seemingly put it on their next version, but they're always pushing forward with their tech advancements. I'm not a DJI fanboy, but all my products are from them, simply because of how good their products are. I've been looking to get a new action cam for my motorbike and DJI FPV and I think this just convinced me to finally upgrade from the original DJI Action Camera. Great editing by the way.
I really like how the GoPro exposes more for the shadows. However action pro has more dynamic range and exposes more in the highlights. I think it’s a different story I’m both of the cameras HLG mode. The new altitude and depth sensors are a cool feature in the action5 but the GoPro13 has GPS back… theyr both good but just on the look of the auto video settings I’d say GoPro I the daytime and action 5 in lower light environments.
I still can't get over the freezing issues from past go pro experiences. Gotta go with DJI this time when I purchase, especially with native Mic 2 connection
Hi Peter. Something you didn't mention in the video, and which I also find important and interesting to know, is that with the GoPro you have to spend half your salary on lenses that don't come in the package, whereas with the DJI Action 5 Pro, you just have to unpack it and enjoy. For me that's the turning point between the two, and what makes me decide on the DJI Action without hesitation. Great video as always. Greetings from the north of Spain!
I can cleary see the Action 4 at 8:28 because of more details in the gras, when it comes to details the low bitrate from the action 5 pro is a bummer, especially for fpv, meanwhile my gopro 13 can do up to 200mb/s with gopro labs.
I paused it many times at 4K resolution before revealing which was which and I agree the Action 5 Pro definitely had many more compression artifacts. Just splotchy all over the place.
I think you've solidified my choice... was leaning towards DJI... and then watched this... for what I plan to do... it seems like the winner. :) thank you!
Holy cow bitrate matters! You can see so much more detail in the Action 4's shots, especially in the background! I agree with you on everything else. Maybe it's the TH-cam compression, but what I'm seeing echos what others are pointing out.
@@PeterLindgren1 I agree with Tim , 97% don't have 6k monitors , on my 4k monitor the action 4 is a little better , but I think with the action 5 bitrate firmware coming up it will be the ultimate winner , but im not upgrading my 4 until I see the results !
@@PeterLindgren1but this is apples to apples. Why would TH-cam compress just one half of the frames more? The Action 5 Pro consistently had many more bad compression artifacts.
So the DJI Action 5 uses a LSI made with a 4 nm node while the Hero13 still uses a GP2 chip built on a 10 nm node. That is why the DJI uses much less power.
As always great video! Very nice and fair comparison. especially when you included the issue that came out recently with the Osmo Action 5 Pro bitrate being so low... So, just a couple comments from my end. Sorry to all the GoPro fanboys out there. (1) DJI put the last nail in the coffin for GoPro. It’s lighter, has better audio, better external mic support, better battery life, fully backward compatible accessories, list just goes on and on. (2) GoPro gave the middle finger to all their customers yet again. Just the battery change alone is enough to walk away from it. All the lens adding, while nice, are crazy expensive, and not backwards compatible with their other models. The magnet mount…too little too late. And let me guess…for microphone support we’ll still need the media mod? Bluetooth audio is garbage. That warping in the FPV footage was hugely distracting and the first thing that jumped out at me.
that's exactly the comparison I needed! One thing i'd like to ask you Peter, which one would you pick for room vlogs? I'll mainly use it outside, but is it suitable (or even better) than filming room vlogs with cellphones (can't afford an actual camera rn)?
There's definitely a difference between the A4 and A5 on the bit rate comparison. Seeing it on a full hd laptop and it was an instant guess on both clips which one is the A4 (with higher bitrate) and the A5 (with lower) . The A4 was more detailed and somewhat sharper but in a good way. I hope DJI fixes the bitrate issue in the next firmware update.
Watching from 4k TV, I picked the A4 both times. Very interesting comparison, would be cool to see what the A5 could do with higher bitrate, obviously there's also TH-cam compression here added to both.
All these comparisons are great but if your flying FPV. You can't beat the GoPro BONES (10) coming in at 54g! That's a lot less than 157g and even 144g....just saying! Get your hands on one Peter..telling you..you'll love it!
Hey Peter Great video as always. I still can't decide between the 2. Which one do u think would be better suited for all round holiday videos? And easy to use and navigate
2:50 it looks like to me that GoPro has actual LOG and Action 5 pro is doing some HDR processing still. If you pause at 2:43, you can see the window being clearly blown out on the GoPro. Yet there is enough dynamic range to few outside. Sure the GoPro is a bit overexposed on the Auto setting. But not enough to have THAT much of a difference.
Nice review. I'm new to action cameras. I'm after a compact travel and everyday ready to carry camera, for equally photos and video. Love them both, but I think I prefer the DJI Action 5
I am in the process of testing this A5 Pro for a first impressions too. Enjoying it a lot. It does seem like the new chip might play a part in the bitrate appearing higher than it actually is (am I imagining this?), or as I would expect it to look, because the comparisons still show the A5 mostly has the advantage. But at the same time, that’s really cool if they offer the option to increase it with a firmware update. I just wanna try it on FPV before end of the week then I’m good. Impressed.
Thank you very much for creating this comparison video Peter. I was doubting about the GoPro, but seeing the warping + also considering the fact that I have to invest around 1000 Euro's to get the whole complete set....I'll wait for the 14 and save up my money. Same goes for the DJI. 4K30P is not the way to go for me. Keeping my GoPro Hero 11 with GPS built in and 5K6. Works fine for now. Waiting for the Air 3S.
This great video was possible with having a pair of great cameras available! Glad there is competition to not only push the limits of these action cameras but keep prices respectively! Having only 1 action camera brand= jacked up prices. Great job GoPro, Great Job Action 5
I've had GoPros since the Hero 3. However, since I have been getting into more professional videography I have been acquiring more DJI gear, (i.e. gimbals, drones, focus systems, and most importantly for this... mics). I love the DJI ecosystem and I think it is amazing how everything works together, especially since the Action 5 Pro has a built in RX for both the DJI Mic 2s. But, I also have the GoPro subscription, tons of other GoPros, etc. When I shoot some of my action sports content, I regularly use up to 3-4 cameras on me at all times. I don't have the money for 3 Action 5 Pros, and I'm certainly not buying previous models. All that into consideration, do you think it is worth it for me to get the Action 5 Pro and continue using the DJI ecosystem in my professional workflow, or get the Hero 13 and have camera continuity across all my other GoPros. Looking at what is important to me, I don't film much action sports, (Airsoft, snowboarding, motocross) anymore due to my work grind. To be quite honest, I would really only use the current action cameras as either a BTS camera or a hard mounted camera to a car or something. I use my phone for the BTS camera with the DJI Mic 2, and it's annoying because sometimes I need my phone during the shoot for other things. A bit of a ramble, but I hope you have an opportunity to read at least the middle part :)
I love the comparison u did between the 2 but i would've loved seeing the video of the 2 cameras in their normal colour settings because not everyone using these cameras have the time or want to colour grade. I know for a fact that me making my own personal vlogs for myself, I dont always have the time or energy to colour grade my footage. I just apply a LUT, change the strength and im off to the races without using D-log. thsi also makes it convenient if im recording a clip to just send it to some 1 without editing
Great video Peter. Looks like, as always, the devil is in the details. I think the Action 5 Pro is a clear winner especially with internal DJI Mic support.
Great Comparison!💪🏻On the one hand I like to colorgrade my footage and the Flat Profile in the new GoPro 13 is REALLY flat👌🏻But on the other hand the Action5Pro includes so many good Features I think I would take the Action5Pro. Recording Time, no Overheating, easy to use, Rocksteady for me great features. Oh and Internal Audio Quality of the Action5Pro also much better. Thx for sharing!👍🏻
I had planned to buy the Action 5, but after viewing your video I'm not so sure. To me the Action 4 was clearly superior to the Action 5 in your video clips. Last year GoPro released the claim that the GoPro 12 had longer battery life without emphasizing they took out GPS. This year DJI claims longer battery life without emphasizing they significantly dropped the bitrate. I will hold out for the time being and wait to see if DJI improves the bitrate with a firmware update. I would gladly exchange bitrate for slightly reduced battery life. I very much appreciate the excellent video. I like your style, and I happily subscribed to your channel.
Also in your drone test. You can clearly see the lack of bit rate in the Action 5 at 3 minutes and 20 sec, Clear to see the picture falling about on the leaves with is a common tell tale sign of low bit rate. Night and Day. Hit pause at 16.29 and look people. I'm not pixel peeping. I just know from vast experience how low bit rate affects certain scenes. Road footage also bad. It's a bummer. If they up the bit rate I'll be thrilled.
I would love to see an accurate comparison between the insta360 Ace and the Action 5! I felt the Ace already surpassed the GoPro. What do you say, Peter?
In other comparison videos, I've noticed the Action 5 looks overly sharp and often artificial because of its digital manipulation of exposure across the frame-it gives off that fake HDR look cellphones do. I didn't notice those issues in this video. Are you seeing that in your Action 5 footage? It's the one thing keeping me from buying the camera and I'm wondering if it can be solved in settings.
I could have done the same video. I just don’t have the deep cinematic voice. You should do audio books or something in that order with your cool voice. 👍👍👍
Am I the only one not getting a point on DJI Action 4 vs Action 5 comparison, as Action 4 footage looks miles better than Action 5 both in color accuracy and detail. Look at the Jeep color, the clouds, it's way oversaturated in A5 pro footage. Look at the mountains in the background in the second clip - Action 4 just has a lot more details overall. Checked on both S95B OLED TV and Dell studio monitor. Could be YT compression but if the final result looks better on A4, A4 is actually the winner in this comparison of A5 Pro vs the GoPro.
Tak 💪 Thanks for this one!! Great comparison. Loved your GP12 DJI4 comparison too, from last year. One question though - how do the cameras do at evening and night shooting?? And how do they compare in timelapse mode??
@@PeterLindgren1 can I ask you another thing then..... Which of the 4 (GP12, GP13, DJI4, DJI5) would you recommend for horseback riding, cycling and fpv....I know, it's quite a combo 🐎🚴♂️🛸
To the point video, thank you. Pressed subscribe 😀👍 Just ordered Pro 5 and mic 2. Often use these cameras for motorcycletrips so batteries are important. I also like the included charging box and the extra batteries that will be enough for a whole day.
I think the Action 5 Pro is just better all around and GoPro has been officially dethroned as the Action Camera King! They have had so many missed opportunities these past few cameras and seemingly can't keep up currently. A5P has a built in 3.5mm jack, better performing backwards compatible battery, 4NM tech, better image quality and dynamic range, the cherry on top is the de-warping it's doing, oh and the night modes look great so far!
The battery just ruins it for me. Imo, the 13 is basically a neat 11 with some excuses to buy more accessories. While I fully understand the profit motive, GoPro is losing touch with their users and it will ultimately be their downfall. They need to stop chasing short term profits instead of innovating for the future. It's almost like GoPro has the same CEO as Boeing 😬😆
@@GrenlandUnderVann I would love to see some real innovation again, it's just been too long. I find myself going for my phone instead of a GoPro 90% of the time. Fpv drones are about the only thing I use them for and that's mostly because of the warranty that covers those pesky trees that jump out in front of me 😆
In my opinion you should always use gyroflow or reelsteady instead of in body stabilization. Somehow I don't trust these camera enough to shoot FPV for a client and some weird warping happens somewhere in the video. I think however that the GoPro footage looks 100x better when you stabilize it in Reelsteady and not in Gyroflow, everytime when I compare those two I have the feeling it looks much smoother when stabilized with rs. The warping is also because you used superwide, I think fpv should always be linear to look as much as regular cameras and that fisheye look just isn't looking good and is weird.
Yeah if you're doing client stuff i can agree with that. But jsut getting a cool shot? Easy peasy with the built in stabilisation. Nah, i've NEVER used linear on FPV. it jsut crops in too tight. I've used Superwide before without the same issues!
Which one is good for under water whats the specs as i took Gp5 in the water without external case it got wrecked within 6 mtrs looking to get one which one recommended?
I instantly recognized the lower bitrate camera on the left on 8:00 minute mark. The bloches on the ground are terrible. I'll cancel my amazon order now.
@@DavidDuchov LOL, it looks like they have to change the CEO. They "fixed" their DJI MIC 2 with update 7 months after the release (dji mic 2 had TERRIBLE audio on launch), now they have to put an update to fix the terrible bloaching from low bitrate compression. I guess I'll just wait for Insta360 ace pro 2
If was very easy to see the Action 4 during your bit rate comparison. Bit rate is a very big deal when it comes to the quality of the image. Now will the average person notice it or care... probably not. It also makes a big difference when grading or changing the image in post. That is 101. I'm keeping my Action 5 for 29 days. If there is not update I will return. Just saying. Thank you.
I like the Audi direct out of DJI action 5 pro. But if you have the DJI mic ii, do they connect easy with each other? For example, do I pick up my DJI Mic do they connect automatically or do I have to go in to the menu and choose the external mic? På ren svenska, lirar de smärtfritt ihop?
GoPro with labs firmware still better for professional use.. bitrate can reach the 200mb… we need a comparison of stab in low light and stab with nd filter and 180º rules
DJI is the future. GoPro is perplexing and it reflected in their stock price. GoPro will probably be gone within the next 24 months as a result of mismanagement. Do people use action cams to do macro photography?
@PeterLindgren1 ahh yea supose it maybe weird, as there is difference in monitors/other perception I guess, but I could see the coloured looked deeper and richer on the AC4 😅 the 5 kinda looked washed out to a degree haha! I'm still rocking a hero 11 🤣.
Hi peter i know this is off topic but im considering buying the dji ronin 4d im currently a sony user (a7siii) do u think its a wise decision or should i wait for sony to release a successor to the a7siii or fx3 .
I’m looking for a small action camera, not for action, but for mall walking tours, city walks and walks at night in the city lights. I was about to buy the ace pro but then this action 5 dropped. Do you think the action 5 is a good option for evening and night walking videos? And mall walking? And does the action 5 have jittery effect in low light with artificial lights?
As much as I want to like the DJI ecosystem, I can't get past the security concerns of having to side-load the DJI app on my smartphone. From a security perspective, having to side-load an app is a big no-no. Looks like I'll probably be going with a GoPro.
So for someone who's new to action camera's and wants to use it for snowboarding and fishing, should I get the Action 4 or Action 5? I can get the 4 for €280 and the 5 for €380 Gopro is out of the question since my friends already have DJI so easier to process and interchange mounts/batteries.
It's weird to hear you say that you switched to Action 4 for FPV. I sold my Action 4 because I don't do any stabilization in camera and the Action 4 has that dealbreaking bug where it doesn't export reliable horizon data. It's just too much of a pain to keyframe all the horizon leveling in editing. I assume you must be doing your stabilization on camera if you didn't abandon the Action 4?
Hallå ännah! I would like to know if the Gopro accessory "Contacto" works underwater and can transfer the WiFi signal through the surface. I can never find any tests on situations I use in my shooting. Maybe something to tryout? Fortsätt med bra kontent! Mvh P
@@PeterLindgren1 no I mean so the powerbank is above the surface. I know it works with a coaxial cable. I just want it for framing stuff I film. Just to transfer the signal through so I can se the feed on the phone.

I’m gonna say yes. The A5 has a better sensor and performance
Very nice and helpful
Awesome low light test is important
This got me convinced that action 5 is better in overalls, even though I don't use actions cam😅😂, well explained 👏
Yeah, I always shoot in LOG with all my cameras though. Would’ve gotten a complaint if I didn’t lol 😅
Great video Peter. Looks like, as always, the devil is in the details. I think the Action 5 Pro is a clear winner especially with internal DJI Mic support.
3 days ago i bought Action 5 and its best action cam that make me happy ))
the best reviews on earth ❤
🙌🏼🙌🏼
The quality of the screens is so obvious dji wins clearly
The 4 hour recording time is indeed for 1080. According to the website; "1080p/24fps (16:9) video, with RockSteady on, Wi-Fi off, and screens off."
I would like to buy a cam for pov driving. Wich one you advise me
Great Comparison!💪🏻On the one hand I like to colorgrade my footage and the Flat Profile in the new GoPro 13 is REALLY flat👌🏻But on the other hand the Action5Pro includes so many good Features I think I would take the Action5Pro.
I agree on the bitrate vs battery, but the A4 isn’t beating the quality of the A5 when watching on a 6K monitor!
Awsome video as always!
Thats 100% YT compression. A5 looks better on my end!
You on a roll 👍👍🍂
Action 5 pro is a definite winner
I would love to see an accurate comparison between the insta360 Ace and the Action 5! I felt the Ace already surpassed the GoPro. What do you say, Peter?
Just wait a few more weeks and we’ll see!
Nope! Haven’t noticed that on mine!
@@PeterLindgren1 That's good to hear. Hopefully it is less of a concern than I thought.
Still not sure witch one but I think I will go with the DJI.
I could have done the same video. I just don’t have the deep cinematic voice. You should do audio books or something in that order with your cool voice. 👍👍👍
That's a good idea haha.
I utilized The Hero 13 Black on my last Documentary. Wonder if you could notice the difference from my Canon!
If you need the shot, the camera doesn’t matter!
@@PeterLindgren1EXACTLY! Boom 💥 hahaha!
@@PeterLindgren1I have many DJI products but still enjoy the Hero Go Pro. Did you get these two sent to you?
Yes! Got both sent to me for testing 👍🏼
@@PeterLindgren1 GoPro always rig up a review box.
What about the dji vs the insta360 ace pro
Am I the only one not getting a point on DJI Action 4 vs Action 5 comparison, as Action 4 footage looks miles better than Action 5 both in color accuracy and detail. Look at the Jeep color, the clouds, it's way oversaturated in A5 pro footage. Look at the mountains in the background in the second clip - Action 4 just has a lot more details overall.
Checked on both S95B OLED TV and Dell studio monitor. Could be YT compression but if the final result looks better on A4, A4 is actually the winner in this comparison of A5 Pro vs the GoPro.
Thank you ❤
Tnx
I like the color of the video
Team DJI here as well! 😄
Yeah that is what i saw in the gopro review, i saw the dji a5p
Thanks for the comparison on GoPro and omso action 5 pro I totally say action 5 pro is better off.😊
a dealbreaker for us was the DJI doesn't even have HDMI out. So we can't use it for livestreaming using an Atem switcher.
Tak 💪 Thanks for this one!!
Great comparison. Loved your GP12 DJI4 comparison too, from last year.
One question though - how do the cameras do at evening and night shooting??
And how do they compare in timelapse mode??
Don’t know, I personally don’t use them in low light situations!
@@PeterLindgren1 can I ask you another thing then..... Which of the 4 (GP12, GP13, DJI4, DJI5) would you recommend for horseback riding, cycling and fpv....I know, it's quite a combo 🐎🚴♂️🛸
@@kristian.ks.1176 oh wow haha! I’d say the OA5
@@PeterLindgren1 Thank you 🙏
To the point video, thank you. Pressed subscribe 😀👍 Just ordered Pro 5 and mic 2. Often use these cameras for motorcycletrips so batteries are important. I also like the included charging box and the extra batteries that will be enough for a whole day.
Thanks for the sub!
Great comparison. Thanks 👍🙏
What FPV do you recommend buying for go pro action 5?
The battery just ruins it for me. Imo, the 13 is basically a neat 11 with some excuses to buy more accessories. While I fully understand the profit motive, GoPro is losing touch with their users and it will ultimately be their downfall.
They need to stop chasing short term profits instead of innovating for the future. It's almost like GoPro has the same CEO as Boeing 😬😆
Also, banger vid as always 🤘🏻
Hero 11 = Hero 12 (minus GPS) = Hero 13 (with GPS).
So when a will we have a graphite battery, 1nm cpu, with an inbuilt heatsink case
Which one is good for under water whats the specs as i took Gp5 in the water without external case it got wrecked within 6 mtrs looking to get one which one recommended?
Extras of gopro are better, the anamorphic lens thats coming would be the deciding factor for me
Hope you'll be happy with your choice! Anamorphic is sick!
I instantly recognized the lower bitrate camera on the left on 8:00 minute mark. The bloches on the ground are terrible. I'll cancel my amazon order now.
They have a new firmware in the making that will crank it up
@@DavidDuchov LOL, it looks like they have to change the CEO.
Thank you.
Lesss goo DJI!! 🔥💯💪
i am from Pakistan here i will prefer action 5 pro because that is good for me on low light and quality of pictures and videos good.
I hate to see Go pro go down but that's on them
can tell the action 4 looks better sharper and richer in colour and the highlights dont look as blown out from this video...
Weird, I just think it looks over sharpened an noisy while blowing it up large compared to the OA 5
You sure you're looking at the correct shot haha? Colors are way better on the A5P !
Hi peter i know this is off topic but im considering buying the dji ronin 4d im currently a sony user (a7siii) do u think its a wise decision or should i wait for sony to release a successor to the a7siii or fx3 .
It all depends on what you’ll use it for 🤷🏻
@@PeterLindgren1 i mostly do short commercials for companies and short documentaries and and films on the side
iPhone 16 also wrap the edge. Wait for 8k 30fps on ace pro 2
Yes it does have a jittery effect in low light. Action cameras are built for bright scenarios due to the smaller sensors!
I mean I’d personally go for the A5 pro. I think DJI is gonna drop a firmware soon enough
Yeah I was either stabilising it in camera or used Gyroflow. Never had any issues!
4 mins in and have used go pros for over 10 years .....ill be buying a dji next week, im done with go pro
Hallå ännah!
I would like to know if the Gopro accessory "Contacto" works underwater and can transfer the WiFi signal through the surface. I can never find any tests on situations I use in my shooting.
Maybe something to tryout?
Fortsätt med bra kontent!
Mvh P
It works underwater, but you need a waterproof powerbank. WiFi signals are in general useless under water
@@PeterLindgren1 no I mean so the powerbank is above the surface.
I know it works with a coaxial cable.
I just want it for framing stuff I film.
Just to transfer the signal through so I can se the feed on the phone.
Then yes, it works underwater 👍🏼
