Well thank you! I have really been trying to avoid bright or intense greens on my trees as of late and as a result I think my trees look a bit more realistic.
As always, a great job. I'm definitely stealing this idea once I'm back in Canada. The best part is that this method is extremely versatile: forests are only the beginning; but pretty much anything can both look amazing and be greatly playable. Bravo!
Glad you enjoyed it. You can use this technique for a variety of uses. You can make easy sabots for troops as well, which I'll have to make a video about soon. Thanks for watching!
You prolly dont give a damn but does any of you know a method to log back into an Instagram account? I somehow forgot the password. I would love any tips you can offer me.
@Kaden Brody i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im trying it out atm. Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Great trees and forest stands! Just an idea...you can put magnets on the bases and small metal on the bottom of the trees to keep them from being knocked over as easy
To speed up gap filling on trees you can over glue superglue into the joint, push it together, then sprinkle baking powder onto the exposed superglue. This will gap fill instantly.
Its a thing, I wanted to see whether it was a chemical or physical reaction due to having increased surface area, its chemical: www.popularmechanics.com/science/tips/a584/2569841/
That's a neat idea, about making it so you can switch which trees go into which pieces. Have you considered taking that idea farther? Maybe set multiple things that can be placed into those "sockets": rocks, bushes, cabins, etc.
Definitely. I had ambitions to make an entire board out of the vinyl with slots to place in a variety of terrain. Haven’t yet had time to try it out, but hopefully in the future!
I'd try a hook blade in a utility knife. First poke a hole for the hook to fit into, then cut away. I find the hook blades give you a lot of control when cutting like this.
I think I'll be trying this, tried it with just the woodland scenics trees so you can just pull the tree out. Not as usable as I'd hoped, this looks more like it though.
These look fantastic! You need to throw that vinyl tile in the trash. I think that's how my granny made her wargaming terrain, get some mdf and a jigsaw and make some tough manly bases, it'll change your life. Your painting techniques really make me want to paint! pretty next level shit, mixing drybrush and wash techniques is the way to go. Good good stuff man.
Thanks buddy! I bought a shit bandsaw awhile back for that purpose and it already died. Just need to convince the wife I need a proper one for "Renovations."
Does the age of the fibre matter ? We have 100+square meters of very thick (but very old- 10+ yo ) poly fiber on the attic. Around 2x2x4 m brand new roll .. is that lucky ? Oh,and 10kgs of exceptionally clean wood pellets too
You can get the armatures off of Amazon for cheap. Just look up woodland scenics trees armatures. I recommend the 5-7inch armatures. For the base, you could use cardboard but you would need to treat it with pva and go to lengths to ensure it doesn’t warp. Otherwise I still stick behind vinyl tile as a cheap alternative to mdf basing.
There awesome, but if you were. Making more do you think it would be advantagous to add a little more weight so theyre less likely to move on the table top or are they fine?
With the double layer of vinyl, plus the caulk, these stands are pretty hefty and would take some force to move. But you could add some more rocks to the base to way it down for extra protection. Thanks for watching!
No worries, durability should always be at the forefront of a wargamers mind. I have made many a pretty piece of terrain that immediately got ruined after a few games.
You definitely could, for many games in which troops can move through trees I have always found it easier to remove the trees once troops enter the forest. However, I do think that it costs you some of its visual appeal.
I like the whole tutorial but the best is the color you painted the trees. They look very realistic and the bark color looks good.

Trees are beautiful too, your "5 ways" vid is top shelf.

@Jax Ralph instablaster :)

@Kaden Brody It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thanks so much you saved my ass !
@Jax Ralph Glad I could help :)
I do like your tutorials. Very clear, very interesting and inspiring and very useful. Helps keep wargaming affordable!
Glad you enjoy them! Keeping wargaming affordable isn't easy, but at least it gets those creative juices flowing.
Those trees look so good! Definitely want to try this out
Very easy to make as well. Thanks for watching!
Wow these are great terrain videos! Some of the best on TH-cam!
+Lawrence Drew Thanks! I appreciate that!

That would have been an excellent idea. I only recently have started using magnets in my hobby, don’t know how I survived without them.
I'm really happy to have dicovered this channel, it's like a birthday or christmas gift. (^-^)
Glad you have enjoyed the videos, welcome to the channel!
Another great video Baron, excellent work as always! can't wait for the next ;)
Thanks man!

I need to try the baking powder/CA trick...I know several other youtubers swear by it.

How about using a hole saw attachment for an electric drill to create the sabot holes?
That is a great idea, I will have to scout out a 2 inch hole saw!
You can get a pretty cheap set from amazon with multiple sizes. Be handy for your miniature bases too
Or drill inside the circle a series of holes with the largest drill bit you have and cut in between ?
might be a good idea to run it in reverse to avoid riping the tiles
That's a neat idea, about making it so you can switch which trees go into which pieces. Have you considered taking that idea farther? Maybe set multiple things that can be placed into those "sockets": rocks, bushes, cabins, etc.

I like to make mine without slots, that way the trees can be rearranged within the base template to accomodate units and still look good.
That's a great idea!
Great Video!!! Can I suggest if you can make a video on how to store all these wonderful terrain pieces? Cheers

Thanks! I'll have to give that a try, was definitely the hardest part of the build for me.
Nice work , thanks for sharing .
cheers John
Thanks John!
Nicely done.
I think I'll be trying this, tried it with just the woodland scenics trees so you can just pull the tree out. Not as usable as I'd hoped, this looks more like it though.
That is always the struggle, make something practical that looks decent. Thanks for watching!

These look great! You put a lot of Work into your Videos. Have another Subscriber with me.
Appreciate it! Glad to have you part of the community!
Does the vinyl tile have any issue with warping?
They have lasted the last 3 years without any warping yet, I think if you use a piece larger than 1” by 1” the issue could be more a problem.
Does the age of the fibre matter ?

Around 2x2x4 m brand new roll .. is that lucky ?
Oh,and 10kgs of exceptionally clean wood pellets too
I think that would work just fine for this. Lucky indeed!
I'm new to the vinyl tile material. Where do you usually get it?
I live in Canada if it helps.
Any DIY store will have it in the flooring section.
Where can I get those trees? And also is ordinary cardboard a good material for base?
You can get the armatures off of Amazon for cheap. Just look up woodland scenics trees armatures. I recommend the 5-7inch armatures. ye already created base from cardboard but didnt know much about size of trees i should use, thanks

+Red Beard Baron offcource I'm forgetting how heavy the vinyl is. No worrys 😎 keep the vids coming
No worries, durability should always be at the forefront of a wargamers mind. I have made many a pretty piece of terrain that immediately got ruined after a few games.
what did you base the tree on? MDF? laser cut? where to get it?
I cut these from vinyl tile to be 50mm diameter. However now I buy mdf from eBay for cheap.
Very good tutorial!! :D
Appreciate it!
Well done.
Appreciate it!
You have some interesting techniques, so "like" and "sub." I'll be watching all your videos for more ideas. Good job!
Appreciate it! Welcome to the community!
Came here to say the exact same thing ;)
Great video!
Thanks buddy!
why not just make the trees apart of it?
You definitely could, for many games in which troops can move through trees I have always found it easier to remove the trees once troops enter the forest. However, I do think that it costs you some of its visual appeal.
Our you could have other tree toys or bushes to fill those holes.
