This scene is a good example of how to use perspective/camera framing, when trying to show power between characters.
Case in Point: At the time of this film, Gene Hackman was 6'2" and Willem Dafoe was 5'9". When Hackman first gets up from there little scuffle, we can see that he's noticeably taller than Dafoe. But when Dafoe's character acts more aggressive and demanding, the camera zooms in close and from a lower angle. It's to the point where at 1:18, he now seems like he could look Hackman straight in the eye, which again reflects his character's resolve as being nearly the same as his partner.

So many good moments in this scene! We are made to believe that Dafoes character is weak and naive and Hackman being from this kind of place is the tougher of the two but the instant rage and reverse of the situation clearly shows a difference. Well written as well since Dafoes character doesn’t fully know if Hackman is just doing a job or more like the Klansmen we see in the movie since the majority of the film is these two feeling each other out to see what the motives could be for each other. Hackmans character shows the rage at the incident of the missing kids when in direct confrontation with the klan and more aloof when Dafoes character is around until he ultimately realizes that Hackman has the right idea all along and knows how to deal with them...the story about his father killing the mule of the black farmer finally sheds light on how Hackmans character thinks and believes...
