    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    When a group of civil rights workers goes missing in a small Mississippi town, FBI agents Alan Ward (Willem Dafoe) and Rupert Anderson (Gene Hackman) are sent in to investigate. Local authorities refuse to cooperate with them, and the African American community is afraid to, precipitating a clash between the two agents over strategy. As the situation becomes more volatile, the direct approach is abandoned in favor of more aggressive, hard-line tactics.

    I like the dichotomy between the two main characters. Anderson was practical and easy going. Ward was by the book and straight laced. They made a good team because they balanced one another out.

    • @1984concrete
      @1984concrete 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      What I think made them a good team is that while Ward better understood the federal implications of what needed to happen, Anderson better understood the Dynamics of how to navigate the tricky waters there and together they could make this case work.

      They're both sides in each of us. It's kind of interesting that Willem Dafoe was in another movie with a similar dynamic just a few years before in Platoon, between his character Elias and Tom Berenger's Barnes. Another brilliant film from a decade that gave us soooo many.

    “What’s got four eyes and can’t see?” After watching the whole movie, this line has an interesting new meaning for me. Dafoe’s character is wearing glasses (four-eyes: nickname for people wearing glasses) and he “can’t see” the only way of nailing the people who committed the murders is to do it dirty and southern like Hackman’s character knows. But still fun to hear the punchline of “Mississippi” and Hackman’s jolly attitude

    I grew up in the late 70’s and 80’s, so Gene Hackman was always Lex Luthor to me. It wasn’t until seeing this movie that realized what a great actor he actually is. He owns every scene that he is in throughout this movie.

    What I infer from this scene is that Dafoe's character is a northern scholarly type, most likely a democrat wheras Hackman's character is a down south republican hardass who believes in a more skin and hair brand of justice. Interesting contrast in characters and sets the tone for how they deal with the issues in the movie.

    • @NotShowingOff
      @NotShowingOff 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Well, scholarly...but they did say that he got shot protecting a black student named Meredith at Oxford, Mississippi. They didn’t want to stereotype him. He is more of an idealist than Anderson, but he is younger and not worried about putting his own body on the line for progress. Not stereotypical, and a real leader, which is why Hackman was surprised and started respecting him.

    • @christyshultz6443

      Well seeing as Gene Hackman allowed someone (and yes a black man with a razor paper cup)to go for torture on some of the guys in the film that be a fair assumption.

      @@NotShowingOff Anderson is more of a will hard-boiled southern cop and realists cop.. For whom we can only hope can keep William Defoe's character alive in enemy territory..Those two butted heads a lot but I think they came friends.it's fascinating to watch it happen because what's so interesting is how different they were in and their approaches to the case.

    • @distinguishedflyer
      @distinguishedflyer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Hackman's character would almost certainly have been a Democrat too - Republicans barely existed in the South until the 1950s/1960s (the party of Lincoln, after all).

    • @apseudonym
      @apseudonym 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hackman's character was not simply a republican, that's too simplistic an explanation. He was a Mississippi native who wanted out. He was previously a sheriff in some podunk town like the one he is visiting but something made him leave. Perhaps an injustice with the system led him to have a change of heart about his profession and his place there. What made him want to leave? Who knows, but I would warrant a guess that it had something to do with realising the place wasn't going to change and that he was better off getting out. The way he talks about his father killing the black farmers mule gives a lot of insight, he speaks of it in a matter-of-fact way, like this is how things are done here, but there is also visible shame that his father did something so despicable.

    Great film, but the real story of what happened is even more interesting. Basically, the FBI hired a mob hitman to go down and find out what happened to them (the missing people), since he could do what they couldn't (violence etc.). You can imagine how that went. He only did it because it gave him almost a carte blanche to operate in New York, but that said, he got the job done.
