  • Meet Jeramy & Kevin, a dynamic build/design duo with a passion for sustainable, simple small homes--tiny houses, cabins, and ADUs. An excellent example of their work is their Haye's accessory dwelling unit. It's a 35.7 sqm / 384 sqft tiny house backyard cottage built & designed by Nanostead. They also share top small space design considerations, why cost per square footage is misleading, and about their new code-compliant, affordable tiny house shells.

    Jeramy & Kevin built a wonderfully simple & well designed tiny house accessory dwelling unit--35.7 sqm / 384 sqft. It's all about the thoughtful details! They also share top small space design considerations, why cost per square footage is misleading, and about their new Nanostead code-compliant, affordable tiny house shells. 🏡 *Tour a gorgeous small cabin they built & designed:* th-cam.com/video/ze62dW4FkQU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=d5zP5iAjWmepywgo

    Thanks Alexis and Christian for bringing another perspective to ‘tiny’. As the guys from Nanostead stated, all homes need the basic components-kitchen, bathroom, sleeping, entertainment, as well as the electrical and plumbing hookups. And the way those are interpreted does effect price. Thanks again, I really enjoyed this one! I have thought about putting an ADU in my son’s backyard. 😊

      Perhaps that is why they are also offering the manuals that come with the code-compliant shells that they sell. They said it's an affordable alternative because you are your own contractor since you have the directions included. Idk
      Also, there are people who have the money to build a beautiful unit in their backyard for the occasional friend or family members who stop in. I've seen plenty of affordable tiny homes on these channels, but as always, most are DIYs.

      The square foot cost may be the same as a larger house, but you have to keep in mind, with a tiny, or small house, there are alot less square feet... $200 per sqft x 2000sqft, is alot more than $350 x 350sqft.....

    Lack of dishwasher was a design mistake, IMO. From what I understand, they are more efficient and sanitize better than handwashing. It feels like overkill sometimes, but it's more function than luxury. I'd remove one of those cabinets or just redesign the space to fit a freezer/fridge and dishwasher.

    Love the philosophy of the builders. I appreciate the reuse of the bricks. I love the flexibility of this concept. Start with the basic shell and configure the interior to meet the wants and needs of the residents. By the time the video was over, I had already redesigned it to better suit me. I love the abundance of windows and could envision adding more. The blinds chosen by the owners are wonderful and allow for varying amounts of privacy and light. I mostly liked the kitchen/living room layout but would use my choice of appliances and finishes. (Interestingly, I would have chosen the same cabinets but with walnut countertops and copper hardware/fixtures) I would place the bathroom on the other wall to simplify the plumbing layout and because I hate the “shelf” ceiling over the bathroom. I don’t like the barn door style and prefer pocket doors. The orientation would change to utilize that fantastic roof for solar panels necessitating a larger mechanical room. I hadn’t figured out how to accommodate my “library” and hydroponics but I think even that is doable. I think the one item I want that would be a challenge from a code perspective is a recirculating shower.
    I’ve saved this video in my collection of future home ideas.

    Not really a moveable TINY home, and with all that space, why skimp on a refrigerator, dishwasher, and clothes closet?

    • @kel5710
      @kel5710 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      They didn't claim that it was a movable tiny. They also mentioned the owners use it mostly as an office space and for short term stays when family is visiting so no need for a fridge that cuts into counter space.

      I don't consider a home that can't be moved comes under the category of "tiny". @@kel5710

    Having a heat pump water heater in an enclosed closet is not the best choice. It needs ventilation to be as efficient as possible.

    What about a tiny home like that with a finished basement? The one thing I don't like about tiny homes is no basement.

    • @ericmossotti1089
      @ericmossotti1089 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most basements are probably just for storing stuff people don't really need or use. Can always add more outside space. If there's an actual use, I'd be for a basement. I'd imagine it might double the cost of a tiny house, though, but I don't know the figures. Would make even more use of the footprint, though.

    All new materials with a nice design, but not toxin, import, or sustainable in most cases. If you use vinyl, no real way to get fresh air, and all new, I would love to see you match materials too.

      It’s pretty darn small, less than 400 sqft, but the high ceilings do make it feel much bigger. Tiny doesn’t mean cheap. There’s a broad price range when it comes to tiny homes. 😁

    I didn't like the utility closet in the bed room. The actual bedroom closet was very small and the only reason the bedroom looks somewhat spacious is because there was no furniture in it. I liked the house very much otherwise.

    • @TinyHouseExpedition
      @TinyHouseExpedition  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Makes sense! This house is primarily an office and occasional guest house so closet space wasn't a priority for this particular unit. You could have a much larger closet in your personalized design, for sure!

  • @MrMountainchris

    No, it's not a competition about how small you can go.. but if you are completely ignoring all the principles of tiny houses, you can't call it that. That is in no way shape or form a tiny house lol That's a house. It's crazy that 4000sqft houses have made this seem like a tiny house.
    That being said, it is a beautiful home.

    • @TinyHouseExpedition
      @TinyHouseExpedition  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Anything under 500 SQFT is considered a tiny home 😁. This one is 16ft x 24ft which puts it at 384 SQFT so it counts! It definitely seems bigger because of the ceiling height and all the great windows.

  • @josephschultz
    @josephschultz 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    if it hade the same amount of plumbing as a 2000 SQ FT home it would be mostly plumbing! it's all becoming a scam a 2000 SQ FT home will use (just numbers here so not actual numbers) 300 2X4s and a tiny home uses 100 2X4s so right there tells you a lot about cost which one will cost more the 100 boards or the 300 boards? or because it will be used in a tiny home will the cost of lumber suddenly double or triple???

    • @TinyHouseExpedition
      @TinyHouseExpedition  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Understandable why it seems that way. 🤔 What they are saying is that the quality and volume of pipes per room are same plumbing-wise. If a 2000 SQFT home was a 2 bedroom/1 bath, it would still have only one bathroom to be plumbed and one kitchen, same as this one at 384 SQFT.
      The comparison they are making is that a home ( regardless of size) especially on a foundation built to current code, requires all of the same elements ( insulation, roofing, windows) as a larger home if built to the same quality level. It also requires all of the same permitting fees and utilities run to the site of the build ( electrical, water, sewer, foundation etc). The "envelope" according to zoning and building code costs the same to permit regardless of size, so a lot of the cost goes there, not towards lumber so using SQFT pricing of traditional homes isn't comparable. It's an apples-to-oranges situation.

    This Tiny home is likely 150k+ based on 16:20. Tiny house living was supposed to be affordable and building something this nice your self would be hard but not impossible. Absolutely hate this company's web site, no completed units to show or pricing. Just some random pictures and contact info. I much rather watch videos of DIYers. More informative inspiring and impressive to me.
