(Last year before Lit) they named him as the 2nd best album selling artist of ALL THE TIME in China. He is PD form multiple big shows in China. He has over 40 solo awards. He owns entertainment company, he has his own studio! Tell me how is he underrated?

Extraordinarily passionate about what he does...his love for music is really deep.
Regarding this song, his purpose was to include traditional chinese music mixed with hiphop elements which would appeal to the global fans as well as the chinese audience.
This MV had a budget of around 1.5 million USD!! (he is PASSIONATE haha)
Lay is an all-rounder, he can rap sing dance, is kind and a total crackhead. He is Chinese and yes he is part of EXO.
Honestly Lay does everything, he sings(has a gorgeous voice), raps, dances, writes his own beats and music, has his own studio, learned English because he wants to show his music to the world as he said. If you want to see/listen to his different songs I would suggest Lose Control, What U Need, Give Me A Chance, Namanana, I Need U, Sheep, Honey, Goodbye Christmas...those are all MVs of his songs. His B sides are amazing as well you should take a listen. He did a collaboration with Alan Walker - Sheep Relift and one with Steve Aoki and Will.i.am - Love You More. Honestly all of these songs are quite different and Lay is an AMAZING performer. He even came to the US and did a free concert in NYC. You should definitely check out his stuff!

In order to have total creative freedom and make the music he wants the way he wants, he finances his own music projects.
In an interview he mentions that it is very expensive to make music, and that is why between the releases of his albums he does other jobs such as modeling and acting.
If you are interested, I recommend you see Golden Eyes, The Mystics Nine and Empress of the Ming.
He also endorses global brands like CK, MAC, DW, Valentino, Converse.

Lay is an amazing artist. I think he is a great example of how unfair the KPOP industry (both fans and company) is to their non Korean idols too honestly. Lay, when promoting with EXO, got little to no lines, screentime, centre time (despite being a main dancer) and just no support as an artist overall. Of course I love to see him with EXO but it's no secret how the company treats foreign idols (otherwise they wouldn't have 3 lawsuits involving discrimation from former Chinese members of the same group).
However, as a soloist, he has really come into his own and proven himself to be one of the best idols I've ever seen tbh. He's a true ace in that he excels in everything (singing, dance, writing, composing, producing, rap, acting, etc). I know this opinion won't be popular because Chinese idols and achievements are just paid dust by fans generally. But Lay is one of the most successful artists out there (has some of the most endorsements from brands of any idol, sells millions as a soloist and can easily compete with other full groups even alone by himself when it comes to numbers). And he does all that with little to no help from his company SM. He's a mad talented dancer too (he recently took up krump and is a total natural).

Selene you are so right at least about SM. Z.tao lost his court case, because he wouldn’t back down. I love Z.tao too. The other 2 members worked out a deal with SM but they are in China and I have no idea what happened to them.
@@angelagermano7392 I think all of them can't promote in Korea or Japan (?) for as long as the contract lasts unless they want SM to take the money but I don't doubt that with SMs contacts they'll continue to be blacklisted for the rest of their careers in most of Korea and possibly Japan. Shame how it all went down with the former members and sad that SM continued to hold a grudge against EXO for the rest of their careers.
SM generally favours boygroups but EXO is quite obviously their least favourite despite bringing in the money they do. SM has held the lawsuits against the group and punished them for it since 2014 because their reputation as a company took a hit.
Selene SM has been lucky that they are one of the heavy weights in South Korea. I would bet that they have a lot of dirty laundry and I hope they get caught.
@@angelagermano7392 SM has ancestral ties with the government but that won't last for long, and BigHit will inevitably take their place in the coming few years as the favoured company by the government. That is unless SM debuts their new girl group (their last chance at regaining goodwill with SK public) which they keep putting off for NCT. SM probably has tons of secrets but I'm not sure they'll ever get exposed with their connections. Not for a while at least.
Selene I’m willing to bet that SM was behind the troubles that BTS and BigHit was having when they were trying to debut. It was said that Fans of EXO was causing the troubles back in 2015-16. But from what I see EXO boys liked BTS’ music.

While Lit MV was all about rap & visuals, Lay also has solid singing skills as well. Check out *Give Me a Chance, Namanana, Lose Control, or Monodrama* to hear his singing. *Honey* & *Sheep* are both another rap songs that you guys would also enjoy. I think the best way to describe Lay is that he's an *all rounder.* His singing, dancing, rapping, & performing skills are all top notch! He's also a producer & produces his own albums. He even makes the beats for his album tracks.
He is also pretty fluent in English & has a full English album: Namanana. So don't be surprised to find out that Give Me a Chance, Namanana, & Honey are all in English.
Haters made *Lay* very angry and this is a war declaration, my interpretation to this mv is that this is a message to the haters that hurts him a lot ,he is surrounded by haters (and is alone) he is a lit (white lotus: the haters call him lit "in Chinese culture it mean someone who is pure in appearance, but opposite inside) he is the king (the king of music in China), music is his arena (so the fight has to be there) , the dragon (those who support and love his work) will fight for him and protect him, his music or his mission is not to fight the hatters but to promote Chinese culture
There is another dimention related to a true story and the site where he is filming this mv, but i m not Chinese so i don't know about this historical things

Lys Leilla I watched the whole series when he was the MC and producer of Idol Producer in 2018. Lay was fantastic and he was always kind and thanking the staff workers. I watched the whole season. I downloaded the app “IQIYI” and was able to see the whole season with English subtitles. You will love KUN” just by seeing the first episode (which is on YT). If you download the app- you will also see Jackson Wang (Got7) as a mentor as well
Yixing said it's about the battle of Gaixon NOT haters. Lyrics are about people who criticised him but the mv is the battle of Gaixon!

In EXO he used to be in the dance line. In the subgroup EXO-M, he is the main dancer and Xiumin as the lead, while in EXO-K Kai is the main dancer and Sehun as the lead. But to be honest, Lay is veryyyyyyyyyyy talented and PURE. He can be a vocalist and can hit high notes too. He can also rap (please check out some of their songs, especially EXO's Promise, Chinese version). He can also write songs, play musical instruments but remains humble. He funded this music video with his own money $1.4million and treated all his staffs right (the making of this MV, he fed all the staffs with his own money and thanked them so much). If you pay attention to the credits, it was his studio who produced it. He is the CEO (owns a company) of Changsha Chromosome Entertainment last August. Yixing is the majority shareholder of this company, holding 80% of the shares.

Lay worked with Anti-General for this song, and Anti has been doing a lot of movie scores for some pretty popular shows lately. They knew each other when Anti joined an electronic music producer survival show when Lay was the leader.

The background of LIT was based on a tragic historical general, Xiangyu, who was betrayed and suicided in the end. Lottis flower in Chinese sounds similar to English 'LIT' and also is a symble of purity and fortitude in the tough environment. I’ve been waiting for his new album which is the first version to came out, teasers along with concept photos. It’s finally here OMG someone pinch me? I’m sadly rusty on chinese history, its like a movie soundtrack trailer. There’s so much but I don’t know where to start since I still can’t get over how darn hardcore LIT our boy is being with a DRAGON, LYRICS and KILLER VISUALS 👀🔥while trying to expand China to the world through music even though local anti fans, critics and anyone else don’t want that to happen 🙄 So in MV Lay (Lotus) is fighting against them (JADE). Childish anti fans kept calling him lotus which means “Fake who only looks innocent but is evil” so his response back to them was this masterpiece called “LOTUS” same pronunciation as “LIT”, despite the lotus being drowned in darkness; he maintains his unsoiled purity.* Regarding the Sheep name, antis also called him that which is why he responded with his song “SHEEP”. After this everyone will know who Lay Zhang is (King of China) and if they don’t then they must be in extreme deep sleep. IN MY OPINION when he says “Taking China to the World” I think the song speaks for today’s generation about being done with the political issues, hatred, discrimination between countries and wants it to end because its a new year a new decade; things need to change if their countries along with the world is ever going to strive forward and he wants to be the first to break through that wall. Well, it's actually M-Pop.
@@Amicy Lay has sort of created his own genre/style of music called *M-pop* which stands for *Mixed Mando Pop.* What this means is that he mixes traditional Chinese instruments or Mandarin with the language (English in most cases)/musical culture from another country.
In Lit, for example, he blended the traditional Chinese instruments & Mandarin with English & trap. On the other hand, most of the tracks in his previous album, Namanana, had latin vibes along with traditional Chinese instruments here & there. He hasn't 100% developed the genre yet. He's still trying to improve & is slowly getting better at mixing all these different styles within his tracks with each album releases.
This song was made for his haters. The lyrics are powerful with one lyric stating ‘take your eyes from the mud and the lotus grows’. His haters call him the white lotus (lian close sounding to lit) saying he uses other people to get popular and actually isn’t innocent. He takes that title and makes it a positive by claiming he is a white lotus due to him still staying pure and clean even with the problems he’s faced (the mud). And the dragon is his fans that will protect and watch over him. He actually just won a lawsuit with a hater since he used to not press charges due to him being too nice. The mv also speaks of a historical story he loved as a kid of a general being betrayed by his own men.
