Kai and Lay are considered the main dancers of EXO and it all comes down to preference I guess because Kai studied different dances since he was little like ballet and jazz whereas Lay has said he just uses dance as a weapon to better spread his music but he’s still an amazing dancer as Kai with a different feeling from him. Actually Baekhyun is the main vocalist of EXO so his dancing isn’t going to be as flashy but he does learn choreo quickly by watching others so he’s came a long way. With Lay’s music he loves to use word play so many of his words he uses in English sounds closely to words in Mandarin like lit and lian

Lay is one of the most famous celebrities in China right now, so everyone wants to work with him. He owns his own record label/studio in China and he produces his own music, as well as music for other artists. Plus, he is, or was, a youth ambassador to China appointed by the government, which means he has a lot of obligations in China. He is considered China's national producer. He is also an actor and he is a spokesperson for a lot of Chinese products and causes -- he is the EXO member with the most endorsement deals. He is also a host of reality programs and is appearing on numerous variety shows in China, so this all keeps him very busy. He is one of the most sought after celebrities in China so he spends a lot of time living in China and away from the other EXO members. Because of his super busy schedule and because of some issues between the Chinese and Korean government, Lay has not been a part of EXO activities for almost 4 years now, other than his cameo appearance in EXO's "Tempo" MV and his brief vocal part in the Mandarin version of "Tempo" MV and song.
His hiatus from EXO is not something he has chosen, but its something that has sort of been forced upon him by the government. So he has recently been working hard to find ways around those restrictions, which explains one reason why he has been releasing so many English songs lately. By producing songs in English for the U.S. market it allows him and SM to do collaboration projects which give him a chance to keep his connection to EXO, without actually breaking any rules, and it allows SM to connect the stories in his MVs to EXO's storyline.
Now, I am no where near an expert on the topic, and I admit that I only understand a very minor part of what is going on between the Chinese and Korean government, but as I understand it, part of the reason for the ban on Chinese and Korean workers between the two countries is that China is refusing to align itself with the U.S. or South Korea to protect themselves with deployment of the THAAD missile defense system in South Korea. North Korea and China want to get rid of the rocket system that is meant to shoot down a nuclear missile if North Korea were to launch one at South Korea or the U.S. Another reason why China doesn't like the THAAD system is because China and the U.S. don't have the best relationship, so if the U.S. and China become on even worse terms China is afraid the U.S. could also use THAAD against them. China says the THAAD system is just provoking them to actually start a nuclear war, and until they remove it or at least move it back from the South Korean boarder, they will continue their ban on Korean products, workers and the Hallyu wave from working in China and for its native Chinese citizens from working with Korean companies. China feels like the Korean government is taking away its native commodities by allowing Chinese people to work in Korea. The issue is even more complicated than this, but that is one part of it.
And now, with the recent conflict with the Chinese government and Hong Kong, more political tension has continued to make it difficult for our Chinese Idols to work with their Korean companies and groups. With many Chinese Idols recently coming out in support of the Chinese government and publicly supporting "One China," this has made it once again even less likely that Lay will be able to work with EXO in the near future. With Lay's deep ties to the Chinese government and with the fact that he is one of the most popular celebrities in China right now, he can't afford to be blacklisted by the Chinese government. He needs to be able to work and live in China as freely as possible. So, regardless of how he might feel politically on a personal level, he has to come out in support of the Chinese government publicly, which puts him at odds with many other counties views on the subject. With pressure from the Chinese government, it may have been difficult for him to stay neutral, or at least not make his opinion public, so unfortunately he is now receiving some backlash from people outside of mainland China.
But no matter what, Lay always makes sure to find a way to show fans that he is, and will always be, a member of EXO -- he is always supporting his EXO brothers even from afar. Most recently we were able to see Lay back together with the rest of EXO when Lay came to Korea to be there for the day that D.O. enlisted in the military. And in most of Lay's solo work we have nods to EXO and how the stories in his solo MVs are connected to EXO's storyline. He always works hard to remind everyone how important EXO and EXO-Ls are to him.
Lay is known as one of the hardest working artist in the industry because he is such a perfectionist and he pretty much does it all himself.When it comes to his solo work Lay is known for writing and composing the songs (including the rap sections), as well as creating his own beats and producing it all himself; and he takes a large part in coming up with the choreography and producing the MVs as well.
When it comes to his solo work, he pretty much has a hand in all aspects of every part of every project,.
I think people misunderstand Lay (Zhang Yixing) sometimes when they first see him because he often comes off as kind of aloof and standoffish and super serious, but what more people need to understand is that, if you get to know him, you will soon find it's because he is very dedicated and committed to what he does and he always wants to show his best self at all times. In reality he is kind of shy and doesn't like to have a lot of attention on himself.
But as you heard in Lay's song "Sheep" he is our "China Sheep -- the lead sheep in China." First off, Lay is known as China's sheep because he was born in the year of the sheep. However, fans also say he is a sheep because he has two sides to him -- soft, kind and cute, and powerful and dedicated. In other words, he may look cute and soft, but if you mess with him you are going to get the horns.He is an all around personality that really is the whole package. 🤩 And he is one of the kindest, nicest, sweetest, hardest working people you will ever meet, and all he wants to do is take care of people. 😍 This is also why Lay's EXO superpower, being the ability to heal everything, is perfect because it fits his personality well.

Thank you for writing this. Theres so many question why he wont leave EXO yet cuz hes not promoting with them for years. But recently in an episode of CZR2 he said that EXO is his lockscreen and wallpaper.
I always believe that Lay did not choose to cause this harm to EXO. And his solo works are temporary plan until he reunites with EXO (as for me). I still believe that miracle will happen bet China and Korea so that Lay will be with them again.
I feel a little sad on the part that it is impossible for Lay to join EXO in the near future. :(

As far as LIT goes, the mv was inspired by the famous Chinese story of Xiang Yu, who fought a bloody battle against the Han soldiers (Lay is playing the part of Xiang Yu). Xiang Yu's forces were defeated, and he alone was completely surrounded. The traditional song at the beginning was composed by Xiang Yu at the end of his life as an ode to his dead lover.

As a solo artist he's everything he wants, producer, beat maker, dancer, singer, rapper, lyricist, arranger, he also plays various instruments, he's a model and an actor, and he's also the face of many brands in China. Trust me, Lay (Zhang Yixing) is really really HUGE in China, oh and he also owns the ZhangYixing studio. Lit MV was about 1.4M and all of that came from his and zhangyixing's studio wallet. For any of us that know EXO, and especially Lay, "Honey" is kind of exactly what we would expect from him.This is just the sexy, cool kind of song and amazing choreography that Lay is known for. All the guys want to be him and all the girls want to be with him. If you look at the credits for this album, Lay, once again wrote and composed and produced this song and the whole album himself, including the English lyrics. Yes I am sure he had consultants who helped him find the right words, but if you know him, you know that he is a perfectionist and there is almost nothing that he is involved in that he doesn't have 100% control of himself. When it comes to Lay's solo work he does it all himself -- he writes, composes and produces the songs (including the rap sections), he even creates all his own beats, he has a large part in choreographing the dances and he has a hand in coming up with and directing the MVs. There really is almost nothing he can't do. That's including learning English so he could make a crossover into the U.S. music market.
"Honey" is another one of Lay's solo English songs and It's in English because I think it was a follow up to his previous album "Namanana". "Namanana" was a half English/half Mandarin album and it was his American debut release as part of his U.S. tour and promotions. Every Mandarin song on his "Namanana" album has an all English version. You heard Lay listening to his song "Give Me a Chance" on his headphones at the beginning of the "Honey" MV and that is one of his songs and MVs from his "Namanana" album. Because Lay is not allowed to promote in Korea right now, SM has found a way to promote Lay as part of EXO's storyline by partnering with him to release English songs and to tie his MVs in with EXO's story. Everything EXO does, including several of Lay's solo releases -- such as "Sheep," "Namanana" and Honey -- all tie into the fact that he is a member of EXO. It's SM's way of making sure that even though he might not be able to work with the members right now, that they still make sure to show fans that his storyline and presence as part of EXO is still really important to both Lay and SM.
Lay is one of the top dancers in the industry and it's his solo work where he really gets to showcase what an amazing dancer he really is. He is the main dancer of EXO-M and he is the counterpart to Kai's role in EXO-K. Kai and Lay are both main dancers, lead vocalists and sub-rappers in their EXO units, so it's no surprise that Lay is an amazing dancer. 🤩 That is why most of the time when you see solo dance breaks in EXO concerts you will see Lay and Kai dancing together because they are 2 of the top dancers in the industry and they were meant to fill similar roles in their respective sub-units in EXO.
When it comes to anything involving one of the members of EXO, even their solo work, you have to keep in mind how absolutely everything they do is connected and it is all designed to tell another piece of EXO's story. So, to really understand the story in the MVs for "Honey" and "Namanana" you have to first understand EXO's concept and origin story. The concept for EXO as a group is that they are aliens who came to Earth to protect the Tree of Life from the evil Red Forces and each of the 9 members of EXO (originally 12 members) have superpowers.
So, For example, to explain the story in Lay's "Honey" MV, some fan theories say that the fact that the weather lady on the TV is talking about the changing weather and the pressure system could be a nod to the unsettled conditions within EXO's current storyline and how currently the members are struggling to distance themselves from the Red Force, etc. And because you hear her speaking with a British accent this might be a clue to tell us where Lay is right now within EXO's storyline, and it might explain why the other EXO members seem to be sending him messages -- as we see with the bee and the blackout, etc.
Most of the members powers have weather and nature elements that could be affected by and affecting the weather around the world. Some theories say, the mechanical bee has been sent by either one or more of the EXO members or it could be sent by the Red Force. The bee is either a message or a warning sent to Lay (although I am not fully confident as to what that exact message is.) And I think, the fact that the bee passes through the glass, might be Kai using his power of teleportation to allow it to pass through it -- or more like, transported to the other side of the glass. And then the lights in the entire city go out as if in a blackout, which I think might be Baekhyun using his power which is the ability to control light or Chen who has the ability to control electricity.
Also, I think it's interesting that Lay, as a member of EXO, has the power of healing, and honey is known for its natural homeopathic healing and medicinal propitiates. And in parts of the MV we see Lay submerged in a pool of honey almost as if he might be using it to recharge and gain strength. I have no idea what this all means, but I just thought it was an interesting parallel.
On the flip side, the story in "Honey's"MV also is saying that Lay is a bee and he is looking for his "honey" that's why he is in a honey comb or in a pool of honey the whole time. I think what he is saying in the lyrics is that "Be my honey and be available to me when I want you, but 'please don't catch no feelings' because you have to know that we can have fun together, but I can't invest all my time and energy into you the way I should if we were in a relationship." In other words, he is too busy and too popular to be exclusive right now. He needs to keep the girl at a safe distance for both of their emotional safety, etc. Some say the "girl" is a manifestation of the heart of the Tree of Life and that is why the members of EXO are always rescuing or protecting the girl, etc. And why all of EXO's songs are about being in love with a girl or being controlled by the power of the girl, such as in "Overdose" for example. Or how they talk about knowing they are bad news for the girl but they want her anyway and they can't help it, but in the end they know they might destroy her -- as they say in "Monster," etc. etc. Which could possibly explain the lyrics in "Honey" if you think of the girl as the heart, it might explain why Lay "wants her" but needs to keep her at a distance to protect her, etc. When you think of the girl as the heart of the Tree of Life, you begin to see even more parallels to EXO's story and even more ways to connect even more of it all together.
Did you notice that the spinning honey comb symbol in this MV is actually EXO's logo? The hexagon is EXO's symbol and if you pay close attention at that spinning honey comb you will see that it says EXO in the middle as it spins. So even as a solo artist, Lay and SM find a way to make sure that we never forget that he is part of EXO and that even if he isn't allowed to talk about the group, he makes sure to show just how important they still are to him.
As you can see, EXO's MVs are more complex then what you see on the surface. However, often -- although the stories in the MVs are loosely based on the lyrics -- many times the story in the MV and the lyrics in the song are two separate things. The lyrics don't necessarily always go with the story in the MV. Often EXO's songs are about being in love with a girl and wanting to be with her, but the story in the MV is about them working to complete their mission and to fight against the Red Force, etc. Everything EXO does has many layers and it has multiple means and messages, including any of the member's solo work. There are always two levels to every EXO song, one designed to grab the casual listener that has no idea about EXO's storyline, and one that, if you look deeper, you discover has hidden meanings and messages that connect everything to EXO's mission here on Earth. .
