You really are quite a good mechanic to be able to do all that work. i sincerely feel for you have to endure all the snags the MR2 is causing. You are a wizard a true star!!!
Buy one from Texas through Southern California. Mine only has rust on the exhaust manifold and turbine housing. Every bolt comes off easy. I’ve never hit this car with PB Blaster in 30 years.
Mate it’s funny you mention working on cars in countries with snow and salt. I feel you. I’ve owned 4 older hondas to date. I’m not an educated mechanic, but I’ve managed to learn a lot of stuff thanks to a friend of mine. In Poland, the rust makes it hopeless. The bolts get stuck, penetrating fluid is a must. Sometimes you happen to rip off a nut head. We used to weld nuts onto the broken bolt to unscrew it numerous times. Stay positive and keep up the good work!
Yo Marty, Been watching MCM from day dot and love what you guys do. It's great that you two do all these mods and produce some pretty decent stuff. I know it's highly unlikely you'll listen to this single comment but it's a constructive one. Alongside doing the mods, I really wish you'd be a little more clinical in a restoration kinda aspect. Like taking the time to give the MR2 some much needed touch ups where possible. Give the everything a good clean, if not by you, by a detailer or something. There's really nothing more I love seeing than, not only a a fixed car that skids, but a car that's transformed and aesthetic. Either way, love what you do and personally think your living the dream, you come a long way and I envy that. I'll have my own garage to tinker with boys toys some day. Just need to get the readies. Cheers, George.
As an MR2 owner and enthusiast i love that Marty is experiencing all of these common problems, even down to the threaded and rusted bolts near the turbo. On thing marty, remove the interior trim that covers the seatbelt mechanism and look down the hole into the sill, there is usually a piece of sound deadening foam that falls down and rots the sill from the inside out, also check behind the boot carpet for rust on the arches, very common issues with these mr2's
I feel your struggle Marty. The newest car I've ever worked on is a 2002 Honda (wife's current car). That thing is a luxury to work on after all the 60s and 70s cars I've owned and worked on - it's pretty much the only car I've done work to that I didn't have to melt the bolts out with an oxy torch and bash the crap out of everything with a big hammer and a pry-bar just to get it apart. I owned a few Geminis back in the 90s, they were pretty good, but the 1966 XP Falcon I once had was basically fused together by rust and age. Lovely to cruise around in, but a very character building exercise to work on.
Love it, I had a 77 Fiat X19, 86 Fiero GT and then finally an 87 MR2 (1 Gen NA) throughout my teens in the 90's - always wanted the Turbo'd Gen 2 Mr2 but it wa out of reach then...and now out of reach as well :( ... but I loved those 'cheap' exotics back then. Thanks for the trip on this one.
"I don't know how you're still doing it" If it's rusty when it comes out you either replace it with stainless or clean it up, then use enough anti-seize that it won't be an issue next time.
Have you ever worked on cars that drove on salt? At some point the anti-seize it's just useless, you have to heat the screws and often you just know that the screw will break.

Marty Toyota designed and installed 8 neoprene packers around the SW20 fuel tank. They were on your old tank; 3 on top, 2 on each side, and 1 on the bottom. I have watched your video twice and you have installed your replacement tank from Victoria without these important packers. You had better take it out and put the packers in so your tank does not get holes in it from moving around as body flexes. Would be a real problem if you get fuel coming out a hole . [ I am also CPEng Aus and RPEQ so advice about packers is serious engineering advice.] Also I am an SW20 owner for 20 years who is also putting his tank back in the next Saturday for the second time and will be making those frustration noises. Rubber grease on all those 5 hoses on the tanks rear end makes the re-fitting much easier.

You really are quite a good mechanic to be able to do all that work. i sincerely feel for you have to endure all the snags the MR2 is causing. You are a wizard a true star!!!
This series has made me realize, I dont ever want an MR2.
Just K swap one, problem solved :P
It's made me realize I want an MR2
...so long as it was never near any rust ever lol
@@anew742 Same here. I'd rock an MR2. Probably the closest I'll get is a Fiero, sadly.
Buy one from Texas through Southern California. Mine only has rust on the exhaust manifold and turbine housing. Every bolt comes off easy. I’ve never hit this car with PB Blaster in 30 years.
16:37 hears twisted's theme
me: the toyota MR-2twistd
It gets more and more twisted every episode so ngl, that's very fitting 🤣
@@Dzonnyg lol true xD. But it should be the nickname for the car xD
Marty: That's the strangest fuel tank I've ever seen!
Me: (laughs in Pontiac Fiero)
michael blacktree Someone’s been watching Ronald Fingers revival series then 😂
You get to remove the entire rear suspension cradle on a CTS-V to get the tank out.
My fiero got turned into a trike the gas tank was a. Was an extra air tank off a semi truck held 10 gallons.
Is it a Fierarri?
@@TheIntercityhst - Actually, I only watched one of Ronald Fingers videos. But I have lots of experience with Fieros. (hint: check my channel)
Probably the best series yet as this is what working on a project car is really like
Mate it’s funny you mention working on cars in countries with snow and salt.
Iv never had rust, I have a land rover! The amazing amount of oil leeks prevent rust.
laughing
Thats funny, i dont think ive ever seen a landrover that wasnt rusty.
Yo Marty,
Been watching MCM from day dot and love what you guys do.
Cheers,
George.
Marty's internal monologue this entire episode: "Why couldn't I just be working on a Subaru right now?"
I'd rather change the spark plugs on the mr2 than my legacy gt
Benjamin Alldridge DA wasn’t a spectacular day mkl
When they blurred the middle finger ( i mean his fist ) i felt that, lmao cars man.
Marty- " Dont buy ..... "
Sarah -n- Tuned enters the room :-)
So true xD
"tanks out" 😂 thats like me working on my car
Love it, I had a 77 Fiat X19, 86 Fiero GT and then finally an 87 MR2 (1 Gen NA) throughout my teens in the 90's - always wanted the Turbo'd Gen 2 Mr2 but it wa out of reach then...and now out of reach as well :( ... but I loved those 'cheap' exotics back then. Thanks for the trip on this one.
I really enjoy this Marty episodes. I don't know if its the shop or just the uninterrupted work but these have been really enjoyable
Coming from someone who just rebuilt their MR2 from scratch I feel every pain that you feel.
"I don't know how you're still doing it"
If it's rusty when it comes out you either replace it with stainless or clean it up, then use enough anti-seize that it won't be an issue next time.
good advice for life
Have you ever worked on cars that drove on salt?
At some point the anti-seize it's just useless, you have to heat the screws and often you just know that the screw will break.
@@ulukai_555 also welding nuts to bolts that you snapped the head off from because you were lazy and didn't feel like heating it
you know moog is on the ground laughing his ass off as he watches this going oh marty i thought you loved toyota..lol
This was a really freaking good car video to watch. big ups to you Marty, and the filming crew
I'm a die hard Toyota guy, this was an assanine design and we appreciate your enthusiasm and hard work Marty !
It's funny how you keep going on about how rusty everything is. This is a regular 5-10 year old car in Germany that has been run all year round
Mine has almost no rust and its 20 Years old. It depends on make and model but also maintenance since the salt in winter does its work
@@momanskiakabiffbuz6004 Also garage or not. Huge difference. Some people also park on grass, I hear it's superbad.
@@momanskiakabiffbuz6004 Park your car on the street and commute in city traffic, where the roads are heavily salted in the winter and this is the result after 5-10 years tops
Me: Laughs in Swedish
This much rust on a car where I live would involve.... at least 30 years if not way more. Love southern United States weather.
"... and we have a nice clean floor"
That's nice... wait WHAT?!😲
Fuel spill ( gush out ) = cleaning the floor after. Hence now we have a clean floor.
Petrol/Gasoline is the original de-greaser (kind of hard on the hands though.)
I think he ment fuel generally is used to clean parts and crap so he spilt fuel and was like eh tudah clean. Mop it up and its good
Me- "Where did you get that hose kit from Marty?"
Marty- "I ordered it from Toys-R-Us of course!"
twos r us. Even.
Hands down best penetrating fluid I've used is just a 50/50 mix of 100% acetone (Nail polish remover) and ATF fluid. Just mix in a metal old school style oiler for easy application and shake before use. Super excellent and cheap!
Dear MCM
I am a huge fan from Mauritius
I have the same engine in a EE111 Toyota corolla, i was having a huge problem with my air flow meter sensor on this engine i believe its a 3s st185, so the thing i did is i swap my whole wiring system to 3s st205 its much faster and no more air flow meter
8:35 music sounds like Marty cursing at the fuel tank.
The plastic squeaked
7:15 "and we have a nice clean floor" lmao
Him trying to put that fuel tank in is like me trying to handle daily life lol
Man how did you keep your patience with that! I was getting wound up with it just watching. Fair play to ya Marty for staying with it! 👏
I have owned 5 MR 2's 2 turbos and 3 aspirated (one a parts car. They cost a fortune to fix because of the rear engine configuration but are fun to drive but no match for the more modern BMW 3 series and Golf Gti's. Only upside is that they are so easy to sell because they have such a passionate fan base and I have had people drive a 1000 miles to pick my car up no problem!
This is the perfect lime to this Corona thing.
Exactly what I need in my life when in full lockdown😂 🇬🇧
mr2 for the win, smoke that bug
Dual carb, bored n' stroked, high horsepower, custom modified, bug...

Nice use of the 'lets get twisted' track, for wrapping and 'twisting' pipes!
