During the course of the second season of The Walking Dead, the show was still finding its footing. Yes, it was based on a comic series, but it was already starting to deviate greatly from its comic book counterpart. How accurate or inaccurate were the storylines going to be? What could they improve upon from the comic storylines to make them better in the show?

They already knew Sofia was in the barn from the beginning too, look for the scene in an earlier episode where Glen is describing Sofia to Maggie and Hershall gives her a stern look and shakes his head discreetly as if to say, don’t say a word.

@@testpilotian3188 nah just rewatched that episode. When Daryl asks what should be done if Sophia is found bitten Rick replies "we do what needs to be done" and that's what Hershel shakes his head at, because at that point they still believe there is still hope for the dead and shouldn't be destroyed. @@testpilotian3188 maybe, though right after that scene Maggie shows disgust when T-Dog smashed the walkers head in that was in the well. The Greene family haven't been killing them and it doesn't say much more about that in the series but I'm sure you alread know in the comics they believe that the undead may still have a chance to be brought back to life. I'm about to watch the episode where they open the barn so will watch how they react. In the comics there are 14 walkers inside the barn. Hershel may not have been the only one putting them in there. Sophia's death was the most important part of Carol's story, in both the show and comic she starts out the same way as a meek, abused housewife, and where her character in the comic served to show how the apocalypse can break a weaker, more dependable person, her story in the TV show does the opposite and shows how the apocalpyse can harden someone and make them stronger than they ever believed they could be. I started rewatching the show (left off in s6-ish) after I saw your “Not tomorrow yet” video and I just rewatched this episode yesterday. I thought it was perfect how nobody could shoot Sofia. The group was thinking Hershel was crazy because he kept his family and friends in there and how its easy to kill walkers when you don’t know them. But we saw with Morgan’s wife and Amy that its not easy to do when its someone you know and care about. Rick HAD to be the one to do it because he was 1. Taking responsibility for Shane’s actions as his leader and 2. Showing Hershel and his family that you have to set aside your emotions for your own survival against the walkers. If anyone else had done it (aside from maybe Carol or Daryl) it would be cold and thoughtless. We know Rick cares about her because he put so much effort in trying to find her and that he personally felt responsible for her disappearance. It wasn’t an easy choice to make and even though she was a part of his family Rick still pulled the trigger.

The difference between early seasons and later is how tight the writing was. Just what you said... every conversation, every interaction, kept you on the edge of your seat and was important. Later seasons had a ton of filler that either went nowhere or simply wasn't interesting. Too many characters came in that were unnecessary and storylines that were either pointless or incomplete took over. I look toward Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul as the beacon of tight writing. Never a wasted moment, everything mattered, character introductions were limited and tight, and when they were introduced, they mattered to overall story in important ways.

Rewatching the series also gives a good indication of the little nods being given earlier in the season to this episode, there’s one bit where Glen is describing to Maggie what Sofia was wearing and you see Hershall in the background, out of Glen’s eyeline, give a subtle shake of the head to Maggie as if to say, “say nothing”.

Everything past Season 9 is pretty much Marvel writing for kids. That's why the show feels so different and why you are bored of characters like Maggie now. For my Headcanon with Randall's group:
Randall said his OG group was 30-osh men strong, heavy loaded, Raping murdering...
Remember that Group that attacked Terminus, as we saw in S5? The one who than got put in the Contrainers as soon as Gareth and co fought back?
Those who got freed by Glenn just to be eaten in the next moment?
In my headcanon this was Randall's OG group, they murdered, they raped, they had the manpower to overtake a place like Terminus.
So In my head they left Randall to die, later came across Terminus, took it over, Gareth fought back, put Randall's OG group in the containers, Glenn rick and Co freed them.
Well probably never get to k ow the truth but this makes sense for me

I for one greatly appreciated the contrast of having our protagonists holster their weapons and find the space to kick around the sh*t between themselves for a bit, rather than staying on the road, or in the city, where there simply wouldn't be enough space for the characters to interact with each other in such depth

Been having Walking Dead withdrawal symptoms since the end of season 11, so I decided to start again from the beginning.
I realised that season 1 is great, but season 2 is superb. The mix of drama and horror, the plot, pacing and characterisation (especially the Rick and Shane dynamic) are all créme de la créme.
I also realised that it was in season 3 that I started skipping episodes for the first time; it's almost criminal to have entire episodes without Rick, even though I can see the reasons for it, but once Shane was gone, Rick became the pillar of the show and not having him for a whole episode was where they started killing the show, for me.
I also realised that seasons 3, 4, and 5 have much more of a comic book feel to them; not sure how to explain what I mean except that the show lost the sense of realism it had in seasons 1 and 2 (especially season 2) and required much more suspension of disbelief. When you watch seasons 3-5, it almost feels like a fairytale than a realistic portrayal about a fantasy zombie apocalypse .... the whole hospital drama, especially (season 5, I think) was extremely poor, almost a complete joke.
I'm currently on season 6 (don't worry, I'm not a bum; I run my own business, so I have the show playing on half the screen while I work on the other half), and it does feel a lot more realistic again, but still not on that special Frank Darabont level (yes, I know he only worked on season 1, but I like to believe that season 2 benefited from his work in season 1).
I think that the show's length is both its strength and weakness; it allows you to bond with the characters and watch them evolve but it also seems to have forced the show to become somewhat diluted by having to milk parts of it: double-edged sword, I guess.
I just wish Frank Darabont had been able to stay on - in some ways, I think the weakness in plot at some points did a disservice to the performance Andrew LIncoln gave; can you imagine Andrew Lincoln doing the entire show on a Frank Darabont-written script?
I do prefer the later walkers, though - I think Darabont's walkers are a bit too smart and agile, but maybe they would have provided more action in later seasons... who knows?

    • @tylergary5953
      @tylergary5953 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This comment is spot on. I’m currently rewatching twd, on season 7. IMO it’s a show that has to be binged on a platform once you hit the later seasons to truly enjoy it. Nothing was worse than the later seasons when they would have a whole episode without our favorite characters, then you wait a week or even two just to still not have your favorite characters in the episode. I’m season 4 they did 3 consecutive episodes of just the governor without our characters and it was brutal. Imagine waiting a week for Rick glen and daryl just to not get them a week later, or even the week after that. The show survived on hype and the characters throughout its reign on top. The show falling off entirely in viewership after glens death was proof of that. Getting rid of a lot of the filler episodes and frank darabont could’ve made it top 3 shows all time. Season 1 was so magical because it was only 6 episodes, and left a lot to the imagination. Every season that followed could’ve greatly benefited from that formula. In reality it was decent show with some great moments and episodes post darabont. crazy cause looking back, I was the biggest “fan” when it was in its prime, I started in season 2. But I actually skipped and didn’t pay attention to so much from season 3 on. Stopped all together in season 7. I know exactly what you’re saying about that comic feel. I specifically think about the second half in season 4, it felt so much like a comic book. Daryl and the claimers is the perfect example. The scenes when they have would be walking on the train tracks talking about terminus, you can visualize that scene on a comic book page.

@@tylergary5953 Yeah, I just really, really hate the whole 'governer episodes. Maybe I hate them because when he is introduced, we are simultaneously robbed of time with our 'survivors'.
I think the realism in seasons 1 and 2 came from the way the way they (Darabont, I think) crafted the human relationships that made you so invested in the characters; Shane is my favourite character in seasons 1 and 2, but Rick becomes such a beast later on - he and Darryl carried the show for a long time, although I also really enjoyed Glen and Maggie early on.
Did you watch Bernthal's interview with the woman who played Lori on his show, 'The Real Ones'? Very interesting how they said they reacted to Darabont getting fired.

He really wasn’t. He was the embodiment of “when you’re a hammer, everything is a nail”. He fails to read the situation properly and decides his way is the only way and can’t even follow through when Sofia walks out, ignoring that they most likely slaughtered a number of people that were Hershel’s friends and family. Think of what happens if Hershel doesn’t end up coming around. What if he decides you’ve killed his family and wantonly disobeyed his rules for your own arrogance? Are they gonna kill an old man as well who clearly isn’t delusional, only a little optimistic? His argument when shooting the walker doesn’t even make sense. There are plenty of plausible ways a walker could shrug off being shot, hell even guys on bath salts can take a few bullets as long as it doesn’t hit anything north of their neck or their spine. Shane was the epitome of a leader who lacks the intelligence to make good decisions, the awareness to analyze a situation in its entirety, and the courage to fully follow through on the decisions he makes.

You could do something on "How Nebraska shows Rick beginning to become more like Shane" Or 18 Miles Out showing Rick give Shane one last chance to be cool. Just to go into it more - though you did touch on it - What I also like is that, throughout this episode - and the season - Rick and Shane are always butting heads on basically who should be the leader. Shane had stated multiple times that Rick couldn't make the hard choices when push came to shove, while Rick was saying he could and he was simply trying to keep it democratic and peaceful, to keep the group together. As you said, when it came to normal walkers that they didn't know, everyone shot without issue, while Rick _(and Hershel)_ were simply stunned into silence. When Sophia came out however, no one could dare to pull the trigger. Not even Shane, who the entire time was saying he could make the hard decisions to keep everyone alive, could put her down. He could only look on in disbelief and his own form of grief. In my opinion, as a leader, he failed. When no one else could step, he was supposed, and he couldn't do it.
Only Rick, the one Shane and many others had been doubting and questioning, had the willpower and balls to walk up to the little girl - that they had all come to love as their own daughter and little sister, in a way - raise his gun, and put her to rest. Rick was the only one who could make that hard decision to put her down, willing to bear that burden and have the blood on his hands, relatively speaking. He stepped up as the *TRUE* leader, when no one else could, including Shane. it really was a very another nice comparison between Rick & Shane
You could also very well argue that Rick has become exactly like Shane in later seasons - which even the show touches on here and there - which is a fair and fun discussion to have, but if I also go into that in the same comment, we'll have a novel on our hands lmao

You nailed it. That's why IMO it's the best season because Shane was a great villain and then the epic finale at the farmhouse and the discovery that the zombie virus has gone airborne was amazing. It went downhill after the Governor.

I mean, it's not the first time Rick shot a little girl walker. So he would be kinda used to it.

This was the episode that sold me on the show. I had watched the 1st few episodes after they originally aired and didn't really care for it. I did not retry it until the Glenn/dumpster event. I couldn't believe how everyone's minds were melting for a few weeks as they were sorting that out. AMC had run a TWD marathon during the midseason break, so I DVR'd it. I was ok with the 1st season, and was trudging along the 2nd season. But, when we got here and they were willing to pull this move of killing Sophia, I was sold. I binged the rest and caught up for the start of live episodes.

This is the episode where Shane goes "Who is that? HUUEEH, who is that?!! HUUEGHH!"

Looking back, I can recall that the "shock" part of this episode went over my head until a few minutes after it ended because Sophia had been gone for so long by that point that I completely forgot what she looked like. So when that moment happened, I thought it was pretty much just any other child walker and didn't understand why everyone was reacting the way that they were (kid walkers weren't a new thing by that point), until after everything calmed down and I had to piece it all together.
And this was while I was binge-watching the show.

I wrote a fanfic a while ago that redid this episode; it had Glenn use his bravery found in that difficult conversation with Maggie to summon up the courage to tell Rick about Shane and Lori. Rick, overcome with emotion later when Shane talks to Carl and then goes to the barn; orders everyone to stand down and let Shane confront the consequences of his actions. The walkers tore Shane apart after he runs out of ammo; and seeing people he knew in life do something so awful in their undeath convinces Hershel that they can’t be cured. Shane laughs about ‘going out like Otis’ before he dies, and Maggie shoots him so he can’t turn.

I think people don’t like season two because to them “it’s boring” for me, I like drama. I like more character driven stories and this season did great at that especially with Rick and Shane. I love the overall vibe of the farm and I get so nostalgic going back and watching this season. I’d probably say the peak was seasons 3, 4, and 5, but season two just has its own very different feel
