I bought a super clean Triumph 60 combo from my local pawn shop for $129 yesterday and I love it. It’s way too heavy but sounds killer!

200$ pawnshop amp that can sound as good as about anything out there, for heavier high gain stuff at any rate. I hacked the speaker enclosure portion off, threw in a bias pot and a pair of JJ 6l6s. That little homemade head was difficult to distinguish tone wise from my modded 5150! If I'm not mistaken this was one of the earlier James Brown designs.

It’s a pretty cool little amp.

I've had lots of amps over the years yet the Triumph that I owned about 25 years ago is the one I wish I still had.

Peavey should reissue this with an onboard EQ, much like the boogie and VHT ultralead, this would absolutely put them back on the map...I love Peavey, I'd love to see them comeback with something new-ish :) This thing sounds killer!

not sure what you're hearing but that amp sounds really good. maybe not for thrash metal but for hair metal that sounds excellent.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. The sounds he defined as “uninspiring” I thought were freaking amazing! They “inspired” me to play!😜🎸 Dude did a great job demoing this amp. Great player.

If this amp isn't for thrash than what is?
A jcm800 has waaay less gain (actually almost a clean amp).
      Source (I have both).

Oh my God what a difference. I bet you just sold a ton of Boss GE-7 EQ pedals though. Very much enjoyed your riffs, great player. Finally a channel where not only do you know your amps, but you're also a killer player and an awesome tech. So refreshing. Thank you.

With all due respect you might be the only one out there calling this amp a dog. The consensus is quite the opposite actually. Those first crunch and Ultra tones you played are some of the best I've ever heard on TH-cam. Great rock amp!

Excellent video. I did the head conversion to manage the weight. When desperate our keyboard player had to plug into the clean channel for several gigs- that massive speaker handled the job very respectably. Currently on the shelf waiting for maintenance.

I just bought one of these. Ironically I could care less about the ultra channel, but I was told by the guy I bought it from that the tone stack is bypassed on ultra, but he did a mod to correct that. He said that stock it would just do this scoop thing on that channel. I haven't finished dialing mine in yet but I think the clean channel sounds pretty friggin good, the reverb is great, and it makes a good pedal platform. Thanks, this is one of the only reviews I could find on this amp. Lol, yes now I'm thinking about getting an eq pedal.

  • @ivanzivanovic4013
    @ivanzivanovic4013 ปีที่แล้ว +2

James Brown himself owns one of the PAG versions of this. According to his words, the PAG is what the Ultra amp designs are. He said it’s one of his favorite designs.

Thanks Rubber Duck tech. I'm on the prowl for a 7 band eq. Your demo totally convin÷ me. This amp kills and is totally under-rated. Peavey was a step ahead with its PAG" PARALLEL AXIS GEOMETRY. what ever that means. I have &de several peavey models. Some you can blend channel or independently play. Thay were unique ly on a separate path imo. I m not a tech but more of a user experiencer. Thanks for your great demos!I'm a fan!

PAG is the tubes parallel to the floor. They're actually hidden in my Bravo 112. You would think it's a solid-state amp if you didn't know better.

That EQ trick is pretty amazing. Would be interesting to hear the difference in refinement achievable between say a six, ten, or more multi-band EQ. Also, were you using the EQ level control to perform a boost function? Cheers~

Had the 120W version which was amazing... Crunch is great when you drop the gain and increase master vol and as you have done tweak the EQ. You were IMHO running the crunch with too much gain...

Great vid. Better lead into "let's make this thing sound good".. this is the original Triumph not the PAG mark 2 version that is highly regarded such that James Brown still keeps his.. not sure what the sideways mouted preamp tives do other that perhaps made the boards easier to work on or fail less..I was fortunate to grab an OG 5150 back in 1999 when the 5150 II was out for dirt cheap.. great amps for what they are and yes built like a tank. Just curious why this amp cant switch channels without the footswitch?..cost...?

I bought mine new for about $250. That was a pretty good deal. (Of course, I could've bought Bassman heads and Supers at the time for around $400-450, so I am a bit of a dumbass.)
I see it this way: Pros: punchy and loud as hell (Although the volume needs to be a different taper) really good stock speaker (mine's a totally unlabeled EVM knockoff that's kickass.. I think you slightly missed the boat by not using it.) Cons:Heat issues due to trying to shoehorn too much into too small a space, without adequate ventilation, (and compromises in construction that compromise reliability) no global EQ in stock form, HEAVY AS HELL! That's due to the speaker, and to be fair, the robust transformers. Might make a good teardown project for someone who has the time, patience, and inclination to correct its flaws. Fundamentally, it's a solid amp, but definitely needs a re-think. (And an eq!)

@@RDamps I still wish somebody would make an eq with 10 bands, between 75hz and 6khz specific to a guitar rig. I've used a 31 band with the top and bottom slid of but it's too much to be useful.

@@chopperdeath Hey bro I know this is a year old comment, but the Boss 7-band EQ? Had a company that makes them specifically for the mid range where a guitar lives. I can't remember the name for the life of me, but you can find it easily. Then a good ol' MXR 10 band in the loop and your good to go. Hope that helps.
