    The practical effects of these older movies tend to freak out people not use to that seeing all digital effects in more current movies. Your reaction didn't disappoint. Definitely recommend the next one, the extended cut gives a little more emotional punch in my opinion. Without giving anything away. But its as good if not even better than this one.

      @reptomicus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Alien practical effects are a bit weaker when they used the stuntman as a stand-in for the creature. But when they use Badejo playing the alien with his unnaturally long and slender limbs, it works well. Also the alien ripoffs made during the time had horrible practical effects. It's not the method, it's the craft.

      It's definitely a completely different kind of movie. Alien had a life form you didn't dare kill. Aliens had xenomorphs that were mowed down with ease and little consequence. Alien also had a very realistic feel to it, especially the way the cast interacted. Aliens was pure 2-D Hollywood blockbuster characters. With the exception of a few effects shots, I've always liked the original over its action movie sequel. Ripley seemed to fluctuate between two modes: fawning mother mode and warrior mode with no in-between. Newt also had a scream that sounded the same throughout and pierced my eardrums. As with most Cameron movies, Aliens impressed upon its initial viewing but diminished thereafter because of the lack of organic direction and emotion. Then, I do write in the vast minority. I also wasn't crazy about T-2, which came down to a 2-D warrior in Sarah Conner , a semi-comical Arnold Schwarzenegger and a John Conner whose hair was always killing his peripheral vision.

    • @calanor4130
      @calanor4130 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bighuge1060 I agree. I have rewatched "Alien" plenty of times, but IIRC I've only done so once when it comes to "Aliens" - and I saw it in the theatre around the time it was released, so I've had plenty of time. Not that it's a bad film (I have a recollection of getting fed up with the kid, though), but it just doesn't draw me back the way its prequel does. People who claim that the sequel is superior might prefer action over horror. I don't.

  • @tjsogmc

    Here's the thing: even if they listened to Ripley nothing would change. Ash was put on the ship by the company to return the alien- he was there to make sure that happened even if he had to kill the entire crew to do it. It wouldn't have mattered if they did what Ripley said at the end of the day.
    And here's a thought experiment: "Alien" is basically "Die Hard" from the alien's point of view :)

    • @eddhardy1054
      @eddhardy1054 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's a documentary on the making of Alien called 'Memory' (or something similar). They interviewed a couple of film critics for it who pointed out the film's supposed highlighting of misogyny, using the scene where Ash ignores Ripley & opens the airlock to let Dallas, Lambert & Kane back into the ship as an example of this. The critics though seemed to totally ignore two things, 1)- Ash was working towards his own agenda goals and these goals were his only concern and 2)- Ripley was (I believe) written to be played by a female or male actor, and if a man had been cast in the role, Ash's reaction would have been exactly the same as we saw in the actual movie & Ripley's gender was in this instant totally irrelevant...so WTF 🙄

    • @s.jackson8098
      @s.jackson8098 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@eddhardy1054 In fact, *all* the characters were written so they could be played by either female or male actors. That's why they all had single names that didn't imply any gender: Ripley, Dallas, Lambert, Parker, Brett, Ash, Kane. That's just one of the things that made this such an unusual script.

That the Alien comes out of your chest and grows to be big as a house or that ASh is an android, covertly placed by the Weyland corporation to carry out their secret plans at the expense of all human crew lives. Tara, seeing your reactions to 90 minutes of nightmare fuel was so priceless. When ASh's head gets knocked off, I think you had to mentally check out in order to get through the rest of the movie. It's so interesting to watch the relationship between Ripley and Parker. They don't really like each other, but they have to work together. Sigourney Weaver and Yaphet Kotto were terrific at portraying this. I'm always impressed that they made the tension between the characters seem realistic. It wasn't one-dimensional. You see it throughout the film, but especially in the scene after Dallas is killed (25:30 - 26:00). Evidently Weaver and Kotto had to rehearse quite a bit to get the tension right; to make it convincing. it didn't come naturally. Their work sure did pay off.

    • @Lethgar_Smith

      A lot of people dont realize that Ripley is the Chief Engineer thinking Parker is but Parker is actually the 1st Engineer and Brett is Engineers Assistant. The chief Engineer's station is on the bridge just like on an actual ship. They are more like a department head and seldom actually work in the engine rom.

I often wonder how well this movie would have played out with the 2 actors in reversed roles. The only thing I can think of, if you recall the scene when Ripley came down to the med lab after Ash let them in and Lambert went to punch Ripley? Maybe because Ripley was physically bigger girl, is all I can think of. I don't know the trivia that well.

    I was 11 years old when this movie came out. It was getting really good press, and my dad had heard that it had some good dark humor in it (which it does). He misinterpreted what was said, thought it was a comedy, and took me to see it on opening day.
    The movie's going along, and gets to the meal scene. The chestburster makes its appearance, a lady in the front row throws up and runs out of the theater, the whole audience is cringing, and I'm scared but enjoying the whole thing. I can only imagine what my dad was thinking.
    I was such a big fan of the first movie that when the second one came out I didn't ask any questions, didn't look at ads, didn't watch the preview, I just went to the theater knowing nothing other than it was a sequel to the first. I got there an hour early expecting bigger crowds, and ended up getting the first ticket to the first show. Best theatrical experience of my life, such an amazing movie. That special edition has many pluses and one big minus. Almost every scene that was cut that was re-inserted for the special edition adds to the movie. Questions about why certain characters are having the reactions they are get answered, and in general it's just good stuff. However, there's a scene early on (I don't want to be too specific for obvious reason) that completely spoils the tension of the first hour of the movie, and was rightly cut from the film for the theatrical version. I always recommend watching the theatrical version first, then going back later and seeing the special edition.
      If only there was a version that had everything in the special edition except that one scene....

    1. Ripley says, "You'll get what's coming to you." is prophetic.
    2. There's a COC in the civilian world too. Cooperation wanted access to the Alien.

    The Music was a rather large controversy between the Director Ridley Scott and Composer Jerry Goldsmith. In pre production, a "temp track" of musical cues is cut to the final product to give a composer the idea of the musical motif the director wants to convey. In the case of Alien, Scott picked tracks to one of Goldsmith's earlier films, his first Oscar nominated score to the 1962 film "Freud." Goldsmith composed a complete score to Alien complete with a unique theme and cues. Scott then bought the rights to use the Freud cues and mixed it with the score that Goldsmith composed along with moving the timing on the score to the point that it was completely changed. Then end title was lifted entirely from Harold Hanson's 3rd Symphony "The Romantic." Goldsmith was furious at the changes made without his consent or input, but there was nothing he could really do. In the end though, the score for Alien earned Goldsmith a Golden Globe for best Original Score.

    Someone may have pointed this out already; I apologize if so. Another way in which this is a curious movie is that the main character does not emerge until halfway through. Until then it's very much an ensemble piece. All seven characters are unique individuals, different from one another. Parker grumbles about his pay and is something of a troublemaker. Brett is his sidekick, not saying much, but practical and hands-on. Ripley is the rational one, Dallas is the tired and impatient leader, Kane wants to explore, Lambert doesn't, and Ash is curiously emotionless. They are true characters; not cardboard cutouts. With the possible exception of Lambert we get to know them all equally well. Ripley's role is a bit more prominent, but not so much that we see "Hero" printed on her uniform. Until Dallas dies, she is very much part of the group. That's a long time with no obvious protagonist. Rather unusual for this type of film.

    I know I am out-numbered, but Alien is still my favorite. Yes, I love it more than Aliens. It’s an “apples to oranges” comparison to me. I’m an older gal, and I really love the Cast. I grew up watching Veronica Cartwright (and her sister, Angela) on TV, Tom Skerritt is so handsome, and I just love them all. I stopped watching after Alien3. Way too graphic and violent for “wimpy” me. 😉

      Alien was absolutely ground-breaking, and is an amazing suspenseful horror movie that stands the test of time (other than the computer being a bit outdated). An amazing movie. Aliens (aka Alien 2) is one of the best action-oriented science fiction movies ever made. If you watch the theatrical version it also has a great tension-filled build before the title critters make an appearance. Many reactors react to the Special Edition, which does include some great scenes that were cut, but also includes an early scene that completely spoils the tension of the first hour of the movie. My dream version would be the Special Edition without that scene.
      Avoid any alien movies after Aliens. The third is a terrible movie and a slap in the face to anyone who liked the second movie, and the fourth is mostly rubbish (although there are some fun bits in it).

    Regarding *Aliens:* There's going to be a lot of people on here gushing about how great the director's cut is, and how it's the one you should watch. I'll be the dissenter here- For a first time viewing experience, I think the theatrical cut is better. The director's cut shows us a lot more, and in so doing, gives away too much too early, which diminishes the suspense and the impact of some of the reveals later in the movie. I always recommend watching the theatrical cut first, and the director's cut from then on. The director's cut gives you more details, but the theatrical cut has a greater impact.
    Meanwhile, if you ever get to *Alien 3,* the assembly cut is the only way to go. The theatrical cut was so unwatchable, some people were saying it had killed the franchise. (Actually, it took *Alien: Covenant* to do that...)

When they talked about the freezers and freezing Kane etc, they are talking about the hypersleep chambers. Space travel in sci-fi movies always have a form of these sleeping chambers to put the person in a kind of suspended animation where you don't age. If they had put Kane in one, they could've made it back to Earth and he would've still had the thing on his face.

    I think Ripley slowed down to get the cat, because it was right there on the bridge, at that moment, with her. Also so was the cat carrier, which makes sense because at the end of the trip, you'd be on the bridge with the crew ready to disembark, you put the cat in the carrier then.
    If Jones hadn't appeared in her sightline, she wouldn't have slowed down, and never looked back.
    And then if that had happened, instead of people screaming, "WHY DID YOU GET THE CAT!?!?", everyone would have been screaming "OMG, YOU LEFT THE CAT TO DIE! HEARTLESS!!!"
    Poor Ripley couldn't win this one.
    In her shoes, like her, if the opportunity presented itself, yeah. I'd have grabbed the cat. And if the cat had not been there to grab, I'd have kept going and grieved later.

    • @TaraTunesIn
      @TaraTunesIn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally see your point!! I guess I would have just had too much lingering concern that the cat could have an alien inside if it!
      After all, she had no way of knowing where the crab alien went while they couldn’t find it, or whether it had more than one “implant” to deposit into a warm body… it could have easily suctions into Jones and implanted into him too!
      Jones could have been incubating an alien when she brought him into the shuttle with her…
      I’m sure if I saw the cat, I’d want to grab him too but I think I might hesitate if I realized that I can’t trust any other warm bodied creatures but myself to be free of alien embryos.. (maybe I can’t even trust myself? Kane had no idea there was something inside of him after all…)

    • @Cameron5043
      @Cameron5043 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TaraTunesIn those are good points. After the fact, given that the alien sniffed the cat carrier, and left it alone, it can be surmised that the cats small size made it impractical for an alien host. But that's AFTER the fact, so no way of knowing in the moment. Very true!

    8:38 "Obviously alien lifeforms are not rare in this scenario."
    Actually they are.
    Putting together many clues from 10 movies and some comics, I'm fairly confident that this is extremely rare.
    So rare that it might be the first time any human has seen any alien spaceship ever.
    We know that some colonization of other planets has begun.
    We know that humans have found alien life on some planets, but we're talking insects and animals.
    I don't know for 100% sure that humans have never found an intelligent species of aliens zipping around space in the Millennium Falcon, but it's heavily implied in many movies that we have not.
    That said.
    This was the movie that started it all.
    There were no other movies or comics before they made this one.
    So Ridley Scott was just making things up as we go.
    I don't think he wanted to extend the runtime with long conversations about winning the Nobel prize for finding an alien spacecraft.
    I'm not even sure he had it firmly in his head that this was the first one.
    These facts were established in later sources that didn't exist when this movie was made.
    So for me, knowing what I know, I accept that this is the first time mankind has found an alien spacecraft and this is the first time any human being has seen a sentient, intelligent, spacefaring alien species - but it's just the bones of one of them.
    Yeah, even in this franchise, Dutch, Lt. Mike, and Naru have all seen a spacefaring alien in 3 movies that take place before this movie, but their stories are untold so nobody knows about them.
    I accept that any random chatter they have about "This is amazing" and "We're the first ever" and "We're all gonna be famous" and all that other stuff people might say when finding the first alien ship ever wasn't important enough to drag out the runtime and dilute the creepy, eerie, suspenseful atmosphere that Ridley Scott was trying to create.
    I assume that chatter happened off-camera.

  • @changsangma1915

    As much as this movie has a cult following today certain people have always wondered about one thing thats odd in this whole scenario- the Cat 'Jonesy'. It may not seem quite a concern at first but you gotta wonder, what company gave the clearance to have a stray animal on board a space mining vessel. There's a special short feature film called Alien: Specimen which is near movie level production that had a Dog which turned out to be...a synthezoid robot. If Weyland corp can manufacture human androids surely it can do the same to manufacture animal counterparts. My crazy theory is the 'Cat synthezoid' was deliberately placed there as some sort of monitor/surveillance that can relay Data back to Weyland corp who probably have been seeing all the events of the circumstances in Nostromo. Which could explain the scenario of its sequel...where the Cat is seen for the last time & never heard of again in the franchise.

    • @TaraTunesIn
