    The Steam Deck turns 1 year old! Are you happy with the first year of the Steam Deck? Let me know!

    • @telsan4291
      @telsan4291 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      One year in and still reach for my deck far more than my PS5, it’s just so much more convenient with the instant sleep and resume, massive and easy emulation capabilities from emu deck make this an all in one. I mean I’ve kitted mine out with with a 2tb nvme, 1tb sd card, kill switch case & dual steam OS & windows boot (deckwizard guide) with my JSUAX rear housing on the way. One year on and it’s still easily the most exciting device in gaming especially with the amount of updates & tweaks valve issues. My only tiny complaint would be to check your thermal paste as I curiously checked mine and it was extremely dry and crackled, so I changed mine with thermalright using guide from NJ Tech now it’s far quieter, I didn’t even realise it was thermal throttling until after I changed the paste @fanthedeck maybe you could make a video on this? :)

    • @revmaillet
      @revmaillet ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@telsan4291 I cleared out my thermal paste and use a graphite pad instead and it stays on average 2-3 degrees cooler and slower fan speeds.

    • @telsan4291
      @telsan4291 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@revmaillet ahh nice, I used the thermalright TFX to drop around 5-6 degrees & lower fans speeds compared to stock, I’ve heard it could go even lower with using a graphite pad but wasn’t sure due to limited testing

    The best improvement they've added has been the "Allow Tearing" option (and I've never seen tearing on the device with it turned on). Fighting games used to see 4-5 frames of input lag at 60 FPS on the Deck, but with frame rate set to unlimited and Allow Tearing turned on, it's down to 1 frame of input lag just like a regular PC.

    • @Thornskade
      @Thornskade ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the game uses its own Vsync then you won't see tearing, if not or you turn it off then you will. It's usually best to allow tearing and let the game use its own Vsync, sometimes I'll also take the tearing for better input latency

    It's doing what I have been expecting, I went in trying to get the indie games I couldn't get elsewhere in addition to emulation. And I have to say I'm down the rabbit hole of emulation to play games I was never able to get my hands on. But this year it's going to be more about the other minor stuff to focus on with Decky or ProtonDB to see what minor tweaks I can do and not break it. Keep up the great work like always! It seems like the majority of people are buying it with an idea in their mind and it works for some and not for others.

    My biggest gripe is the inability to play games with anti cheat prevention. I have no interest in playing online but would like the ability to be able to play the main campaign on games like COD. I know you can do it via windows but I bought the game on steam, I wanna play it on my steam deck. Other than that this is the best device Ive owned and I take it everywhere. Can’t wait to see what they do with it in year two.

    My feelings towards the Steam Deck are the same as when I played on the PSP and Nintendo handhelds. This is an amazing portable gaming system, and will rank up there as one of the best handheld systems ever released. I've been catching up on a lot of games that I normally play on a handheld, rather than on a my desktop or console. I'm currently trying to finish Dragon Quest XI, and will move onto the Persona series after that. I haven't tried to play any emulated titles just yet, even though I have Emudeck installed. I was thinking of using it for PS1 to Wii titles, but I've honestly had plenty to play just on the PC side. 8-bit and 16-bit ROMs are relegated to my homebrewed 3DS. The Steam Deck is absolutely amazing, and I think everyone should consider it over any PC handhelds that cost over twice as much.

    great vid as always! happy bday SD! as for the bluetooth headset issue, I've had experience with a couple (cheaper, mid-level) ones and I have ended up with the Nothing Ear sticks. They work really well and haven't really experienced any lags (I also frequently use it when playing with Hi-Fi Rush). It's the only headset that I have that doesn't have issues with connection. It easily connects compared to the others I've tried that always needed to be disconnected / forgotten then reconnected as a new device every time just so it works. If you get the chance to find some Nothing ear pieces they are just really damn good (imho). Also, the looks are eye-candy and if you've got the teardown skin from dbrand they look like they were made for each other LOLs. Anyways, that's it. just wanted to reco something as I've realized you might need it. Been a follower and viewer ever since you started man. all the best always! SteamDeckers unite! haha

    Personally I haven't used the Deck as much as I thought I would. I was excited for it pretty much since it was announced, and I've been following your channel since you had about 2K subs. It was the first time I was excited for a peice of hardware in years. It is, in almost every way, my dream console. And I just... don't use it that much. I was hoping it would get me playing more games again and help me get through my steam backlog, and it has a bit, but more recently I've been playing games on my desktop and on Switch again. I think in the long term this thing will get a lot of use, and eventually even once it's retired it will still be my 'everything emulator'. But yeah, I do have a little bit of buyers remorse. idk. It's an odd feeling. It might just be because money has been really tight this winter, and it's felt like a bit of an overindulgence.

    • @FanTheDeck
      @FanTheDeck  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All of that is definitely understandable. It's definitely disappointing to hear you have some buyer's remorse. I can see how the Steam Deck is not for everyone. And for some people, it's just a companion device. It's great that it can mean many things to different people but certainly if money's tight and you spend a few hundred bucks, you want to get the most out of your purchase.

    I love that the deck can just suspend any game. Something interrupting your play time? Just hit the power button... Taken care of it and want to continue? Press it again and you're right back where you left off. This is something that consoles have been doing for a while but not on PC.
    Also especially now in the winter (and with current energy prices here in Europe) I love just cuddling up on the couch with my deck and a blanket. When I sit at my PC I get a lot colder even with a blanket because the desk chair just doesn't insulate me as well. And there's just something cozy about having the game in your hands :)
    I also love how easily you can change the refreshrate. Most games I'm fine playing on 45 Hz and don't need 60. Of course this is only a plus because of other limitations. It would be awesome if we could get variable refreshrate but the current hardware doesn't support that. Maybe in a later version... And while I'm dreaming, make it an oled screen with smaller bezels :P

    I have a special use case on hand (pun intendet).
    I got a cat in my household which often wishes to be cuddled on my lab. Thanks to the steam deck and its awesome custom controler layout features i can nearly play all games on quasi one-handed controll scheme and use the other hand to cuddle my cat or give my partner a back rub whilest chilling.
    Just set one of the back trigger buttons (L4/5 & R4/5) to do a mode shift and set the reachable buttons to activate unreachable buttons usually controlled by the other hand. Sure this is nothing for games that need a lot of simmultanious button presses but i often play strategy, turn based or base-building games which do not need much simultanious button presses.

    Now that I have I’ve had this amazing portable gaming system for a year the next step for valve would be to make a steam machine although I think valve are cautious to go up against the console market since they are trying to convince publishers to still regularly publish games on steam. By officially entering the console market with a living room console they could deter Sony & Microsoft from publishing any more games onto steam since they would direct competitors.

    I got my Deck in August of last year and I've loved it. I also play a lot of older games or indie games, so I haven't had many issues so far.
    Currently, I have issues with Forza Horizon 4 freezing randomly, on certain games waking from sleep will cause the Deck to crash and restart, and some games randomly crash like Stardew Valley and Rimworld, both verified titles. Bluetooth controller lag is pretty severe in my experience and as such, I haven't docked my Deck often unless I'm using KB+M.
    All in all, the Deck has been a literal game changer. I love being able to game anywhere. I have a 2021 Razer Blade 14 which makes gaming anywhere slightly less novel, but with the Deck, you don't have to be plugged into the wall to run at peak performance, nor do you have to worry about hauling peripherals around. I've been doing a Deck only play-through of Cyberpunk 2077 and it's been an absolute joy.
    I have also setup my Deck so I can do almost all of my IT job from it! It's very versatile!

    Just had mine for over 2 weeks. I play mainly rpgs (ffvii remake, etc) and fighting games (tekjen 7). Had all ina at lowest level. For the screen size, I hardly notice the lower screen res. So generally happy with it.
    I don't play retro games or emulation games so just playing games being sold by Steam is an almost streamlined process.
    Bluetooth audio is a hassle though. Using airpods pro 2 with the deck and it disconnects when opening a new game. You just have to reconnect it after the game launches and then everything works. Bearable lag.

    Hi love your videos, you should put some tags on the game being displayed, some of the footage looked very interesting but I have no idea how to look for those games. At least in the Dbrand ad I did not see tags like in the rest of the video.

      @FanTheDeck  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there - thanks for the comment. Yeah I normally have tags but I skipped it for the sponsored segment in order to put the focus on the Killswitch.
      The main two games I showcased there were Drainus (shmup) and Haak (side scrolling Metroidvania). I like both games a ton.

    I'm looking forward to a new steam deck with a more powerful apu. I am enjoying my steam deck currently and generally play it as often as my PS5 when I'm in the mood to game. But I do wonder if the newer models have better batteries.

    Valve need to release an official SteamOS 3 ISO and a Steam Controller 2 based on the Deck's controls and then provide a free or subsidised bundle of the two to major OEMs to be pre-installed on desktops and laptops. Valve would certify SteamOS on the OEM hardware (though that might get tricky if the OEM uses hardware that doesn't yet have Linux drivers), but insist that SteamOS is a simple radio button option on the same page as the Windows version.
    The combination of the ISO (for new DIY builds or for people switching away from Windows) and the SteamOS pre-installs could add a ton more SteamOS users and maybe persuade those hold-outs out there to at least support Proton (Linux will have to overtake the macOS gaming market share before devs would consider native Linux ports).

    I want Special K to work in Proton. I like that Valve added HDR somehow, but I'm not sure how to get it working in older games or indies that don't have native support. That's my number 1 feature request. That and a holographic popup screen ;p.

    One thing I hope dbrand does is make an adapter that just holds SD cards. Then kick stand works but I would like something that would just slot in. Something just small enough so the steamdeck sits in the case and hold my micro SD cards

    I undervolted my Steam Deck and it is now running cooler and longer.
    Undervolted it by -40mV on CPU and GPU. -45 or -50 also were possible but i feel safe with -40.
    With -60 on cpu the frequency started dropping. Had gamecrashes with -55 on GPU when i manually set the GPU frequency to 1000mHz.
    Do you plan to make a video for undervolting?

    • @universegaming1353
      @universegaming1353 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you elaborate on this further? What software or terminal command you used to achieve undervolting? Also, what is the overall power consumption when undervolted? Was this done on SteamOS?

    I bought mine because my pc could not play halo infinite campaign (no dx12). And i love it so far, its cheaper than building a new pc.
    Perfect for emulation. And recent(for me) games like shadow of the Tomb raider/Resident Evil 2 run pretty dang good.
    And older games like halo reach run absolutely fantastic and get more than four hours of battery life.
    Its just perfect for the pc gamer that wants a console. The average console user might find it a bit fiddly to optimize settings for each game.

    11:04 I think the Steam Deck will be perfect for me, I have a high end gaming PC, any triple A game that I wish to run on ultra at 60+ fps I will play there... BUT I want from my steam deck to play old games, PS2 games, Nintendo games and other emulators. From what I have seen online its gonna be perfect, I cant wait to boot up NFS Most Wanted 2005 first on the go first!
    P.S. Waiting for delivery! Picked the 64GB one, first a sim card, then dock, then a wireless mechanical keyboard(have a mouse already and Sony XM3 headset that I can use the 3.5mm plug) then a SSD upgrade... I'm giddy with excitement just thinking about tinkering with the steam deck!
