The Acer guy is probably correct. PC handhelds must be priced so aggressively to compete with the Deck, that the resulting profit margins are probably not worth the cost and risks associated with production. Valve makes their money selling games, not hardware. Hardware companies will never compete with them, at least on price.
This is precisely why I want a Steam Console so badly. Valve can make a device priced and spec'd similarly to gaming consoles, but with the massive benefit of SteamOS. Gaming mode replaces your living room console, desktop mode replaces your PC. I already do this with a docked Steam Deck and the experience has been very good. It's time for Steam Machine 2.0

    • @RadikAlice

It's funny looking back. Steam Machines weren't bad, just too soon and basically dependent on "pls port ur game"

I believe they have a domestic advantage here far as retail. But unsure if they do in the local territory far as supply goes. Id argue that advantage goes away completely in comparison to Asus's.
Most people don't realize how huge asus as a brand is.
I feel the steamdeck was a scape goat here to some degree.
Acer has the money to do larger orders for sure, but they've always been the stay slightly behind and rebrand/retool company historically. Typically their strength is pricing in comparison to the others.
      A monitor example of this
      Acer x34 vbmiiphuzx
      Alienware aw3423dw
      They rarely reinvent the wheel.
They just kind of come in and then have the perception that they're a semi-reliable brand that's a little cheaper than competitors. (Think great value) For the profit margin they would want, they likely couldn't justify ordering enough for a volume discount. Because it would have to be cheaper than the ally nore than likely to gain notoriety.
but they can't say that part, because than their failing to compete with asus.

Waydroid is a Linux app to make ARM games playable natively on Linux (on x86-64 processors) via libhoudini (better for Intel) or libndk (better for AMD) translation layers, not the other way around. And I'm not entirely sure ARM processors are capable enough to run x86-64 games via translation layer, with exceptions of a few indie games.

Sony are only "remastering" these games for consoles, but their added benefit is that they get to remove the originals on PC just so they can outright enforce PSN across the board on Steam/EGS.
They basically want to capture and lockdown the Steam market and pocket it into their ecosystem, none of which we asked for. This is why I hate when publishers come crawling to Steam, because they only care about stealing from Steam's userbase, rather than selling to Steam users and playing nice.
Instead it's DRM/account sign-up/Data collection enforcements, coupled with higher prices, and all of that is enough to put me off buying from any publisher that comes to Steam and expects me to put up with all that uneeded crap.
Just sell me the game at a decent price, no data collection, no extra hoops to jump through. let me boot up the god damn game so I can play it without obstructions/intrusions.

If Proton (ARM) releases in a competent and feature-full state, that would mean major strides being made in battery life for future ARM iterations of devices like the Steam Deck, which would be huge. Currently getting anywhere from as little as 30 minutes to as much as 8 hours of on-screen-time on the Deck, depending on game/workload, is rough. Switching to ARM, even with the same battery capacity, could see those numbers change to anywhere from 90 minutes at minimum (though that's a generous minimum, assuming other hardware stays mostly the same) to as high up as about 14 hours with lite gaming.
The future looks good for handheld gaming, and I'm here for it. I'm not even upset in the least about being a "beta tester" for Deck V1; it's been a wild and exciting ride, and I have loved every second of using my Deck.

      @FanTheDeck  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes, it's a little complicated to explain entirely in a video but the point is they're using multiple different compatibility tools for different purposes and all of them are to beef up Linux compatibility:
Waydroid -> Makes it possible to play AndroidARM games on LinuxARM
Proton -> Makes it possible to play Win-x86 games on Linux-x86
ProtonARM -> Makes it possible to play WinARM and Win-x86 games on LinuxARM
And it gets deeper than that because Proton is a fork of WINE and ProtonARM seems to be leveraging FEX. WINE itself has updates that address WindowsARM to LinuxARM compatibility. We haven't seen any source code for ProtonARM so could it be a fork of like Box86/Box64 or something? And what about making games playable on AndroidARM? Are they going to do that too? Lots of questions still left to answer.

There is definitely a market for handhelds, PC handleds are relatively "new" (Nvidia started it, gpd and ayaneo were keeping it alive, steam brought it to its golden age) but none of these PC/laptop manufactures will ever do console let alone steamdeck, psp, or switch numbers because they all have one thing in common, they all sell at a major loss because they have exclusive/games and/or a digital store they take a cut off all game sells (like apple and Google with apps). Valve can afford to take a loss cause they'll make it back on the 30% Percent they make back on all game sales on their store front, and guess who just bought some games, a new steam deck owner or really any PC handheld owner, it's why steam they have so many sales. People buy more when their are deals vs none. Acer, Asus, Lenovo have to sell these devices and laptop prices or they won't make any money back, their income is purely from the hardware sale not games or software sales. I hope with all these new handheld it doesn't set the precedent for more store fronts.

Those companies like to bitch and moan about the Steam Deck pricing and the "loss leader" shit and how they "can't compete with that" but then they proceed to:
    * Use Windows instead of Linux (it is an extra cost whether people like it or not, Windows isn't free and is always a bad choice for anything really)
    * Chase bigger/heavier specs that are completely unnecessary for a handheld (bigger screens for no reason other than supporting 1080p which is overkill on such a small density, a bunch of RGB effects, beefier CPUs for the sole reason of chasing those few extra FPS that makes no difference, etc., all of those not only suck more battery but also make the devices more expensive - handhelds are closer to notebooks than full rigs, economy over performance, people should get their shit together)
    * Skip out on what really matters and/or when they don't it is lackluster (trackpads gyro and back buttons anyone? also inline analogs? to hell with the Xbox layout it sucks balls)
    * Fill their shit with bloat no one wants, occupies precious storage space and only gets in the way (looking at you AYA, no one cares about your overlays, they're just a nuisance)
For the umpteenth time: if you want to "compete", you must be in exactly the same field as your "competition". The same reason why Epic and the rest aren't competition to Steam (see first bullet point above, freaking Orange Pi Neo manages to be more of a "competition" than anyone else in this space by that point alone).
Also fuck Rockstar, their game is not compatible with Linux (never was, no native port = no support, Valve does the support for them when they really shouldn't be because it's not their job), not the other way around. Those companies have to stop being so narcissistic to the point of thinking an entire operating system has to curve itself to their stupid crappy multi-billion open-world sandboxes (see Saints Row, native ports all the way up to Gat out of Hell, how hard is it? it's NOT).

If I could figure out how to get my steam deck to play Skate 3 without lag, my life would be complete.

Single Board Computers such as Raspberry Pis and Orange Pis use ARM so that is very good news for ARM and SBC users. Valve should really push hard for these SBCs.

I have been hoping for the next steam deck to be a Arm based system since it would get even better battery life (Hopefully)

It was Rockstar who added abusive anti-cheat, not Steam. It's insane that they blame Steam.
