    I am happy to provide more details of importers and breeders, if you need.

    This was very interesting! Thank you. Here in the US I’ve not seen them locally in any store. I had to dig deep to find a source that seemed reliable. I found 2. One captive bred them and was willing to ship (which a lot of individuals don’t want to do)and one wholesaler who dealt with wild caught that sold to the public. Because they’re so hard to get, you’d think breeders would be more interested in this fish. I would guess it’s because the success rate isn’t that great and for that reason harder to mass produce like other fish?

    • @tropicalfishhub
      @tropicalfishhub  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks!

    • @tropicalfishhub
      @tropicalfishhub  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great question! German breeders like to have at least a thin layer of sand in Altum tanks, because altums spend quite a bit of time close to bottom and their long ventral fins are often in contact with substrate. in bare bottom tanks, glass gets covered with bacteria and altums are believed to suffer from fungal infections and fin rot because their fins/tail extensions get in contact with glass. In tanks with substrate, this is not an issue. Long-term I try to keep my Altums in tanks with sand just to be on the safe side.

      I just love this kind of Pterophyllium. I currently have a 200 litres tank (90x40x55) with good height but I know that its not the best in terms of longness. So I thought that it could be interesting to give them a lot of space doing a bare tank with sand.

    • @tropicalfishhub
      @tropicalfishhub  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@erzakaria Your tank should be enough to raise juveniles, and you can upgrade it once they re about 1 year old and outgrow it. They are not particularly active swimmers, but as they mature they will get more territorial so there can be lots of fights in smaller tanks.

    Everything you say is true, with one exception: hybrids between P. altum and P. scalare do not exist. The genetic distance between the two species is too great, and this prevents hybridization. What you describe as hybrids between P. altum and P. scalare are in fact an intraspecific mixture between the domestic forms of P. scalare and the wild ones (most often Rio Nanay scalare).

    • @tropicalfishhub
      @tropicalfishhub  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sadly, this opinion is what harms the wild fish. Sustainably collected wild fish provide income to indigenous communities who in turn ensure that wild habitats are protected. It has long been proved (since 1970s) that trade in wild Amazon fish has helped to preserve many habitats which otherwise would be destroyed by logging and deforestation. If there is no demand for wild fish, local communities will have to shift to other forms of income, such as cattle breeding and palm oil production which leads to habitat destruction and extinction of wild populations.
