New Channel Goals & News !
Winter 2020 Seminar - This goal will allow me to host a 2020/1 winter seminar on a topic set by my patrons and enjoyed by you! My goal is to provide a reader, discussion group, and 1.5 hour long sessions over the course of 4-5 weeks deeply exploring a text or topic in Western Western Esotericism in addition to my weekly content. This will also support my longer term goal of teaching a university level Introduction to Western Esotericism course next summer!
Next Summer Class - My goal here is to get enough support to teach a university level Introduction to Western Esotericism and Hermetic Philosophy course next summer spanning an entire academic semester starting in May and ending in August. We could meet twice a week for lectures and discussion. I would provide a pdf reader for the class along with discussions and office hours. It would be a fully online course with the sessions available to the public as well - a real attempt in totally open, crowdfunded education on one of the most difficult to find fields in academia.

A dybbuk was the main antagonist in the movie The Unborn. Probably the most terrifying possession movie I've ever seen. If you haven't, check it out. A rabbi is chosen to exorcise it rather than a priest, and it does dabble is Jewish mysticism.

A life long friend had a lot of mental issues.
I brought him along to a pastor, who had helped me to be released from an attaching spirit of religious legalism.
My friend sat next to the pastor on the other side of the room.
As soon as we started praying, he fell to the ground and started hissing.
The pastor jumped on his back, rebuking the devil.
My friend snaked/crawled his way around the room with the 100kg+ pastor sitting on his back, rebuking this entity.
I had to move my legs on the couch to allow them through.
He went in a full circle like this and finished where he started, coughing and dry reaching.
He had a carpet burn scar on his forehead for year after.
This particular spirit was extremely powerful and it had to be seen to be believed.

Egyptian demonology is interesting too, as they didn't even write their names down for fear of getting their attention, but evidence suggest then some demons were given offices as protectors over the home and so akin to domestication of dogs or cats got their name and place amongst humans. There's a video on this from an university simply titled Egyptian demonology. That's oversimplified but what I drew from it . Also not the only place the darker aspects aren't even named or mentioned due to fear. Even Miccenean Greek Hades and Persephony were alluded to by calling them pseudonyms such as the host of many guest or the girl or maiden or queen for his wife.

It is little known fact that in traditional Daoism practiced today one of the main activities of a Daoist temple is to perform possessions and exorcism, often to help the general public. The other discipline is the creation of talismans and emulets for healing and protection. Daoist are believed to have perfected the science of tapping into the Spirit rhelm by performing precise rituals with deep mindful intentions and using the primordial energy to alter earthly energies.

I never thought about it before, but the Gerasenes demoniac scene works really well with the Christian idea of Jesus as the sacrifice into which people's sins are cast. Jesus has sometimes been depicted in Christian thought as the sacrificial "scape-goat" of Jewish tradition, and the story of the Gerasenes demoniac symbolically fits in really well with that idea.

One of the ironies of Sulphur is that it would have worked against the Black Death, if they had only allowed it to build to toxic levels. Unfortunately, at their tech level the only way to know it was at the right level was for acid to run down the walls.
But seriously, I have used Sulphur as a fumigant a number of times over the years. I have one bit of advice, if it is at all possible do your ritual outside.

@@andythedishwasher1117 I think it was just a bittersweet sardonic comment. Leonard Cohen, the Jew... knows that his tribe adore music. There are many messages in his lyrics that are poetry. “Eg she tied you to your kitchen chair, she broke your crown and cut your hair. I don’t think he was advocating domestic violence or bdsm. Cutting hair is an ancient biblical (Samson and Delilah) reference to taking someone’s power away.

Fantastic video, Dr. Sledge! I especially enjoyed the part about the BADAS ROOT! Pity that is seems not to exist anymore! I love the idea that a sorcerer has to sacrifice a hapless dog, or at least call in a favor from a gal-pal to get the badas root, but all that I would have to do is to dig and to pee, and then the dreaded badas root would be mine!
Maybe that's why the tree was eradicated? Some king probably didn't like anything that powerful to exist if women had an easier time acquiring it than the men did. Who knows? But a tree that emits lightning, with deadly roots full of demon repellent?! What's not to love? Maybe the back-room boys in the genetic engineering world will find a way to bring it back?

The story about Legion seems like it could have been a reason for the Roman authorities to want to get rid of him, given as the story could be a veiled reference to leading a revolt.
Also, I feel like Solomon might have been suffering from some PTSD.

    A bit of synchronistic philosophy:
“No, I'm in all of it. I'm the darkness and the light, I'm the sunshine and the storm. Yes, you're right, I was there in her laugh, but I'm also here now in your pain. I'm the reason for everything. I am the only ‘why.’” - Love, Collateral Beauty (2016)
“I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.”
    - God, Isaiah 43:7
“God is love.” - Jesus, 1 John 4:8

I was wondering if the demons being named Legion was a reference to the Roman legions, if the word used was the same as the Roman military unit or merely a word meaning 'many' that someone translated into English as legion. Thank you for clarifying that.

Do you see the ancient Egyptian methods you're describing here (about their almost medical intention of "warding off" possession before it actually occurs, even if they didn't follow a medical process) as a sort of precursor to what we now call the scientific method? Not that they necessarily *had* a scientific method, but sort of "almost" got close to having it? Are there people out there who argue this is true?

    • @TheEsotericaChannel
      @TheEsotericaChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I certainly think they are experimenting and going about that process in a rational way. Whether that is 'scientific' or not really depends on what we take 'science' to be. I have a pretty broad sense of 'science' and think they are up to something like it.

Just as the myth of the vampyre developed the idea of having to invite the idea in before it could enter, perhaps the metaphor is a warning of not allowing bad thoughts to make a home of the mind.

"We postulate the existence of intelligences, either within or without the diviner, of which he is not immediately conscious. It does not matter to the theory whether the communicating spirit so-called is an objective entity or a concealed portion of the diviner's mind. We assume that such intelligences are able to reply correctly --- within limits --- to the questions asked." ~Aleister Crowley, from "Magick in Theory and Practice."

My problem with the spiritual world and its denizens is that I can study how people have interacted with them but my knowledge does not carry over into belief, or faith if you prefer. I view this relationship as one in which the spiritual exists in a fish tank while I am on the outside unable to do anything other than stare at the spirits. No interaction.

I love your videos and hope you keep up the great work.
My understanding was that the Demons choose the closest animal around them, it could of just as easily been sheep or goats, the other thing is that pigs can swim very well and are not indigenous to that area where most claim the event happened, nor are there any cliffs. But this is according to the theory that it took place in the sea of galilee. In any case the demons chose the animal, not Jesus and it was the Demons whom thought they were going to be tormented. Jesus simply said "Go!" Matt 31: And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs. ”Legion also has or had a different meaning besides "A military force" although could be related it comes from from PIE root *leg- (1) "to collect, gather." Tucker writes that "The common sense is 'pick,'" but it is unclear whether the use here is "picking up or picking out." The story itself , I believe, references a "legion" of Demons, but used in your analogy I can see the comparison. It has been my experience that many have been compartmentalized into one discipline and to get a real in-depth look at our past we must dive into all the sciences. Realizing there are just as many unexplained artifacts as there are defined ones is a real eye opener. The geology and archeology alone has taken years to conceive and then to put together in a way that is somewhat comprehensive. Thank you for your time and look forward to watching more of your videos.
