"When the mayor has swagger, the city has swagger" No. No it does not. I've never heard anyone complain about a lack of swagger in their mayor. And NYC's last problem is a lack of swagger.
I definitely see people compare Biden and Trump's "swagger" every day. They used to pick on FDR for being "a cripple" even though he's the most transformative president in a century and a half. there is something to the psychological connection to swagger even though clearly it's not the only thing.
The hypocrisy is astounding because success has many fathers and failure is an orphan. He claims to be a Hip-hop public office holder but puts on policies that compromise arts education and without that policy the music wouldn't have developed as much. Not respecting the Drill rappers freedom of expression is institutional gatekeepers which older generations don't accept youths to do what they want. The search and frisk policy is desperation and a sign of being overwhelmed with the responsibility. Ice T 's status is now being part of the establishment due to his body of work. The Mayor has decided to want to be part of the heritage and has not done anything for creating tomorrow's culture. I don't like his political actions.
The intersection of hip hop and politics. I might have an answer to the question. Eric Adams reminds me of a Senator from Arizona who got elected as someone who wanted to improve the conditions of others however how she moved in public was counter to what she portrayed. Adams is doing thing in some respects. Both politicians are punching down on the most vulnerable of society instead of punching up. It's just a thought.
@@TheCompanyMan I was gonna edit my comment but after a little reflection aka food time I'll give some food for thought. We all know the essence of Hip Hop is those who are vulnerable in society punching up at existing power structures. What Adams is doing is using those existing power structures to continue to punch down on others. On the real, Hip hop is socialism, not the way the American right wing thinks that it is. Looking at it from that lens, the things Adams is doing isn't Hip Hop in my opinion. Always appreciate the content my brother. Nothing but love for everyone on the mission.
Politics always has been bait and switch, smoke and mirrors. Say you are about and for something. Than do another. All part the game. But with a large city that has lot issues financial, poverty, crime and playing a shell game, moving money from issue to next. Will it help or hurt? Or Mr Colors Mr Original Gangsta Mr 6 in the morning Ice-T giving a plaque for it help? I don't have the answer to these questions. Ice-T's Power is still one of my favorite albums
Ice-T gifting Eric Adams this award DESPITE his stance against NY Drill is just so funny but sad. Edit: Guess Ice-T doesn't see the parallel between gangsta and drill rap.
Reading about Eric Adams I see a bit of Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey. Swap out "hipster" for hip-hop, and that's Frey. Although he isn't a cop himself, he's in DEEP with the MPD now. There's a lot of shady shit going on there, together with homeless encampment sweeps that I frankly consider crimes against humanity. And when he was elected to City Council, he pitched himself as a reformer! Just a terrible mayor.
I remember hearing about him during COVID. He presented as for the people. Then I heard something about him flipping the script. What shadiness do you think it is?
@@TheCompanyMan 1. Apologies for my delayed response here. 2. There's plenty of reporting by the Minnesota Reformer that's gone into more detail, but here's some highlights. In the wake of the killing of Amir Locke he announced an end to the no-knock warrants that resulted in that incident... but even that ban had so many holes in it that there was practically no difference. There was also the fact that the MPD has a long history of racism (one glaring example is how in 2018 officers in the fourth precinct dressed a Christmas tree in menthol cigarettes, Popeyes containers,Takis, and a 40, in one of the most predominantly black precincts in the city) There's also a scandal about millions in aid for feeding hungry kids in the state, and how one of the many charged in this scheme is a former Frey policy aide. That's not a direct indictment of Mayor Frey, obviously, but it speaks to someone with a lax attitude towards corruption. Or how his office is currently attempting to justify an environmentally devastating development in the East Phillips neighborhood right now. The mayor also has a habit of ducking away from tough questions at press conferences, and when he tries to make random public appearances he gets chewed out by residents. There's a lot more out there, and I don't think it's easily tied into hip-hop, so I understand not making a whole TBD or breakdown or anything. Its just something that this one reminded me of.
the shirt speaks volumes in this one last time someone cut music programs for youth, we got hip hop he just replanted that seed.... in the name of hip hop, i guess he may accidentally do something for hip hop not in a way that should be praised, though thank you for this great video
I'm disappointed in Ice-T... again. Some folks rag em for playing a pig so many times but I get it, he's an artist and just tryna make some bread for his peoples. Ain't nothin deeper necessarily. But he stay contradicting himself and talking outta both sides of his mouth. He'll go from saying some pretty radical sounding stuff to this kinda mess, from acting like he's really in tune with things and then say some backwards bs, or sounding like he's really paying attention to the world to some borderline conspiracy theories, it's weird. I'm from NYC and I absolutely do not fw this mayor. Or any other really, but this clown ain't no hip hop mayor lol Not a mite. This dude is a prime example of skinfolk ain't kinfolk and "black faces in high places" as Dr. Cornel West likes to say. Politicians ain't for the people, the people gotta be for the people, pigs come in all shapes and colors.
The problem isn’t gramps using hiphop culture to communicate …it’s when the people aren’t able to read between the lines when they’re pandered to. (That’s NOT hiphop)
To paraphrase the great poet Krs 1 "As a young adult you should be fighting against the statis quo, when you become an adult you should be a part of the statis quo"🤷🏽♂️.

No problem. I was just making a point. As, with Ice T the same person who rapped about pimping and gangbanging. Is now a TV personality and giving an award to the mayor of New York city 🤷🏽♂️. That particular Krs quote was just insightful for this type of situation. He isn't the only one by far.🙏🏽
We most keep our eyes open cross all our T's no margin for aira we are all on a mission to get pass this , this to shell pass pulling all my energy from those that pass before me , walking by faith not by sight
@@TheCompanyMan Yes, it is what it labels itself, its gangsta "rap" not gangsta hiphop. People label music "HipHop" just because someone is rapping.Drill Music is Drill Music, Trap Music is Trap Music, and HipHop Music is HipHop Music.
The reason why you're confused is you don't understand that the people that control Hip Hop also control the Democrat party and that is why you see the honor and protection provided to Hip Hop by Democrat Mayor's and even Governor's!
@@TheCompanyMan The people who initially funded what we know as Hip Hop today, the same people that C.Deloris Tucker fought went on to take control the Democrat party Mayor Adams is not the only Democrat Hip Hop Mayor there's Houston and Atlanta who has given Honor and protection even after high profile shootings, also the Governor of California wrote a law protecting Rappers from their lyrics being used as evidence in trials, why would you do that?
@The Company Man the problem with that is you have rappers who are under the radar who confess evil deeds in their songs. For example, a florida rapper was charge for murder after rapping about it (La’Darion Chandler)
Eric Adams is just a black Republican that likes hip-hop. That's it. It's important to keep in mind that music is downstream of politics and societal conditions but this is also something not talked about enough within hip-hop, something that's supposed to be about fighting injustice, because just about every rapper is a millionaire or is trying to become a multi-millionaire and doesn't wanna endanger their revenue. I doubt that even IF Nas and Jay-Z came out and slammed Adams things would change, but you can never expect those with money and power to change the system. So I don't really celebrate anything that celebrates people getting INTO the establishment
It pains me to say but C. Delores Tucker was in fact right about gangsta rap music, the glorifying of a mob type lifestyle was in fact detrimental. There is a difference from painting an image and glorifying it.
For the Gangsta rappers who indeed glorify it. Not all do. Drill rappers are more known to me literally glorifying it. Telling your story if your reality or environment is not glorifying it necessarily. Ice Cube and NWA and even a lot of Ice T isn’t necessarily glorifying it if you pay attention. “I’m in love with the co co.” Is definitely glorifying it.” He was ridiculed by a lot of people for that. And the video was a horrible influence! In Ice Cubes “it was a good day” he says some thug stuff like he isn’t get caught for crimes, but in the video at the end, all the police and helicopters are at his house. Lol. Accountability! Art of storytelling but he did not leave it at an unrealistic fantasy condoning the nonsense in real life. He also has a great song in defense of gangsta rap called “Gangsta Rap made me do it.” And a lot of the terminology was geographically regional. MC Lyte said she had never heard of calling someone a “Dog” until West coast rappers got on the scene, or “Bitch.” She now realizes that what was going on over there was different than what was happening on the East Coast. They thought 2Pac was insanely sexist and evil for referring to a woman as a bitch, but it was more regionally normal as a term of endearment, unless using it in the context of trying to be insulting. Eryka Badu said it’s a term of endearment in Dallas where she is from. 2pac has some of the most encouraging music for women, and told Biggie to make music for the women because they will buy your music, and the men will buy what the women like. C. Delores Tucker had our best interest at heart, but like Kendrick Lamar said in response to Fox News ridiculing Hip Hop “Hip Hop is not the problem, our reality is the problem.” Poverty is the culprit of crime.
@@LeonaHeartYou really had me intrigued by your response because I rarely read long responses lol. However I believe we are actually agreeing to agree on most points, the only thing I have to disagree with is calling a woman a bitch (female dog) as a term of endearment. I wouldn’t call my mom, sister, or niece a bitch because I want to express my love. So I believe Erykah Badu can keep those sentiments in her personal circle and not teach our youth that’s that ok because it’s not. Overall you raised great points and really know your hip hop for sure. 💯
@@DJVeeRiche I never said that I think it’s a great term of endearment or that I use it as one. Lol. But it’s a fact that some people do. Whether it’s a good idea is a whole other question that I never addressed. Lol. No man is allowed to call me that, and they know it. It also isn’t a part of my personal cultural environment. But thanks! You made great points also!
Yes, because only the Hip-Hop Mayor would spend the summer chasing down and crushing people's ATVs and dirtbikes, The Hip-Hop Mayor would install new speed cameras on every damn corner. Give me a break
Love this, but I will point out ONE mistakr I think you are making, @thecompanyman. Calvin Butts crushed CDs because rappers were using words he didnt like. That's a Free Speech issue, also artistic expression. Unregistered Motorcycles, ATV and Trikes being used recklessly in gangs on the streets isba safety issue, actually hurting people. You shouldn't compare those. Apples and Oranges. Otherwise I agree with most of your essay. ✌️👑
Let’s skip the semantics, the definition of Drill is killing your opps and taunting your victims. This isn’t “rapping about what I see in my neighborhood” and should be treated as the violent propaganda that it is.
It's absolutely the same as rapping what you see in your neighborhood. It's definitely violent and full of taunts like you said, but it's absolutely what they see in their neighborhood.
The entire American political class from the top to bottom needs to be completely removed and replaced with socialists from a ML vanguard party. But good luck finding any popular socialists in America that aren't directly or indirectly controlled opposition...but until then, everybody everywhere in this country can expect "nothing to change but everything to slowly get worse."
I don't find it odd that the rapper who said Cop Killer, who ended up playing a cop in New Jack City and Law and Order, celebrates a cop. Looks on brand to me 😂
@@TheCompanyMan as a Brazilian fan of yours I highly recommend it. Freire is one of the most studied scholars in the world, not just the field of pedagogy. The most famous quote of his is: “when education is not liberating, the dream of the oppressed is to become the oppressor.” Fits like a glove for this
Lol if Russell Simmons was Mayor basically , oh man but after Adams (faked) “I drink NYC tap water and so should you, (never mind the lead contamination from old pipes) video I could never take anything he said serious after that
Why don’t you want people sleeping on the subway? Sure it would be better if they had places to go, but like Krs One slept on the subway back in the day.
@@etotheipi42 that definitely happens. I’ve seen people get on what seems to be and empty train car. The doors close and then you realize you’re on the car with the homeless person who been camping out in the car with all their stuff for days and now you’re trapped in a rank metal tube til the next stop. That shouldn’t happen.
Well At least now with all them education funding cuts kids can go back to learning from hip-hop. Bet Ice T would like that. But all jokes aside, this mayor looks like he's trying to do his best maneuvering between his campaign donors and his conscience. Anyway, great breakdown, sir 🫡

Well said, Tapiwa. Excellent analysis.
I don’t think Adam’s is like sinema. Adam’s is over many more people and has a lot of varying issues in front of him.
@@TheCompanyMan
They're both garbage
@@TheCompanyMan I was gonna edit my comment but after a little reflection aka food time I'll give some food for thought.
We all know the essence of Hip Hop is those who are vulnerable in society punching up at existing power structures. What Adams is doing is using those existing power structures to continue to punch down on others. On the real, Hip hop is socialism, not the way the American right wing thinks that it is. Looking at it from that lens, the things Adams is doing isn't Hip Hop in my opinion. Always appreciate the content my brother. Nothing but love for everyone on the mission.
50 years. 50years damn
Stay keep them accountable brother
Politics always has been bait and switch, smoke and mirrors. Say you are about and for something. Than do another. All part the game. But with a large city that has lot issues financial, poverty, crime and playing a shell game, moving money from issue to next. Will it help or hurt? Or Mr Colors Mr Original Gangsta Mr 6 in the morning Ice-T giving a plaque for it help? I don't have the answer to these questions. Ice-T's Power is still one of my favorite albums
Love the analysis, Hawk. Thank you.
I comment as sacrifice to the Automated Instruction deities, Algorithmia
Thank you for you service
This awesome
Ice-T gifting Eric Adams this award DESPITE his stance against NY Drill is just so funny but sad.
Edit: Guess Ice-T doesn't see the parallel between gangsta and drill rap.
That’s why I put him talking on video music box in the piece. He’s saying what the drill rappers are saying now
Exactly drill is just a sub-sub genre of gangsta rap. Ice T is part of the reason it exists
I been waiting on Adams' downfall like I'm 50 cent🤣
eric adams is the type of people pandering fascist that would make mussolini blush
the shirt speaks volumes in this one
last time someone cut music programs for youth, we got hip hop
he just replanted that seed.... in the name of hip hop, i guess
he may accidentally do something for hip hop
not in a way that should be praised, though
thank you for this great video
Comment for the algorithm
Thank you!
Hip hop is the status Quo now
and know how to spell status quo
@@billyconnelly3568 I would curse you out. But, I'm not going to disrespect this channel like that. If that's all you got out of what I was attempting to say then you my feeble minded friend still need time to grow up.

KRS-1 had many much better ones. No one should aspire to be part of the (capitalist) status quo.
Sorry for the snippy comment
He said HipHop Mayor not Rap Mayor or Trap Mayor or Drill Mayor. Theres a difference.
all three are under the banner of the culture.
@@TheCompanyMan If it contradicts the 4 principles of the culture it can not exist under the umbrella of the culture.
@@biggcebo Does gangsta rap contradict the umbrella of the culture?
@@TheCompanyMan Yes, it is what it labels itself, its gangsta "rap" not gangsta hiphop. People label music "HipHop" just because someone is rapping.Drill Music is Drill Music, Trap Music is Trap Music, and HipHop Music is HipHop Music.
Yeah he's really "hip-hop"
The reason why you're confused is you don't understand that the people that control Hip Hop also control the Democrat party and that is why you see the honor and protection provided to Hip Hop by Democrat Mayor's and even Governor's!
Wait. I don't understand that sentence. Not sure what you mean. Break it down for me again.
@@MrJojordan Because art shouldn't be taken as fact. Not every rap lyric is the same and not every bar is a confession.
@@TheCompanyMan The point was why would a Governor give Hoot about a Rapper being prosecuted because of his lyrics!
@The Company Man the problem with that is you have rappers who are under the radar who confess evil deeds in their songs. For example, a florida rapper was charge for murder after rapping about it (La’Darion Chandler)
Kansans still got love for you Justin despite the slander lmaooo
Thanks Ethan 😂😂😂

He also has a great song in defense of gangsta rap called “Gangsta Rap made me do it.”
And a lot of the terminology was geographically regional.
Yes, because only the Hip-Hop Mayor would spend the summer chasing down and crushing people's ATVs and dirtbikes,
The Hip-Hop Mayor would install new speed cameras on every damn corner.

And that Mayor Eric Adam's
Ain't tryn' to see no drill rapper

Ice T thinks today's music is goofy and soft?
Is he unaware of all the rappers murdering and being murdered right now?
So crazy.
Is drill hip hop or its own genre..I don't have the answer to these questions 😂
Let’s skip the semantics, the definition of Drill is killing your opps and taunting your victims. This isn’t “rapping about what I see in my neighborhood” and should be treated as the violent propaganda that it is.
It's absolutely the same as rapping what you see in your neighborhood. It's definitely violent and full of taunts like you said, but it's absolutely what they see in their neighborhood.
New Kwame Kilpatrick?
Let’s hope he’s not a criminal too

The entire American political class from the top to bottom needs to be completely removed and replaced with socialists from a ML vanguard party. But good luck finding any popular socialists in America that aren't directly or indirectly controlled opposition...but until then, everybody everywhere in this country can expect "nothing to change but everything to slowly get worse."
Too much truth.

Pedagogy of the oppressed - Paulo Freire

@@TheCompanyMan as a Brazilian fan of yours I highly recommend it. Freire is one of the most studied scholars in the world, not just the field of pedagogy. Why don’t you want people sleeping on the subway? Sure it would be better if they had places to go, but like Krs One slept on the subway back in the day.
People sleep on the subway everyday all times of day. It’s when they live on the subway that’s the issue

Well
At least now with all them education funding cuts kids can go back to learning from hip-hop. Bet Ice T would like that.
But all jokes aside, this mayor looks like he's trying to do his best maneuvering between his campaign donors and his conscience.
Anyway, great breakdown, sir 🫡
I think Ice T just did it for the 5 million he put i for the museum
Absolutely. And Eric Adams arguably deserves it for making a priority from a budget perspective. It's not a shot at either of them. It's just ironic.
