    The best thing about you, Justin, is that you process something this inflammatory and controversial in such a thoughtful way that adds to and builds on the conversation while most people on the internet are just reacting to it. It's something I admire about you and try to include in my own life. Peace.

    Kanye has profited off of playing the victim versus being a triumphant. He lost his mother and before that, had a near death experience. If anything, it's supposed to make him"Stronger". However, he's chosen to make situations worse for himself. I find it strange that he used Stacey Dash for "All Falls Down" and how that became their real lives.

    10:25 Justin answering questions while asking them. Great breakdown! You can't expect authenticity from a public figure (that's why we call them figures, they're only the shape of person) and you can't expect empathy from a billionaire (they don't get there by playing fair).

    • @TheCompanyMan
      @TheCompanyMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      LFAN, thank you. I think it's wild that people still have so much empathy for Ye. He pulls the biggest stunts then stunts. It works every time and every time he falls into a greater situation. I guess we all just love the show if it.

      @@TheCompanyMan I think people tend to project themselves onto their favorite celebrities. They'll love Ye because they see a part of themselves in him: the man struggling with mental health, the fashion forward weirdo, the misunderstood genius and, apparently, the hardworking conservative. We tend to ignore all the facets of celebrities that don't fit the image we identify with, which makes it easier for celebrities to monetize their image. Ye makes money off of damn near everybody, fashion hypebeasts, artsy hipster hip hop lovers and mainstream crowds, ghetto youth and suburban kids, conservatives, etc. All the while offending everybody at one point or another. @@TheCompanyMan That's actually something I'd like to see you delve into more -contrarionism and how it contributes to misinformation. It seems that some artists, particularly more lyrical and underground artists, value being contrarian to the point of actually rejecting otherwise factual information. For example, the amount of artists I've seen falling for anti science and antivax propoganda is honestly a bit disturbing. It seems like there's a recent fetishizing of the idea of "being a free thinker" to the point that people will reject otherwise factual information in favor of pseudoscience and conspiracy theories. It might be a a topic that's fairly expensive in scope, but with something as important as medical information I think it's really important that we emphasize scientifically validated information.

    Peace, first take as an official analyst but been in the comments before. This take is incredibly astute. I've always known Kanye was venture capitalist but pimping his own pain and backing it with 'in your face evidence' is amazing. Full circle to the 'using Kweli and bagpacker scene.' Kanye benefits from his mother's knowledge. It's like Eric Michael Dyson using his powers for evil. The understanding of socitial individuality and the lack of it is Ye's playground. Like the devil deciding whose next on the apple feeding line. The worst is he gave us some of our best memories. It's hard to shake those. But your 1st love is often your worst heartbreak. 💔

    “Kanye has becoming dangerously great at relating black pain to right wing talking points” or maybe the right wing talking points inherently support healing black pain. Both the right and the left have similar ideals but end up victimizing each other. Party bickering has made us believe the issue is racism when the real issue is classism.

    • @TheCompanyMan
      @TheCompanyMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Agreed 100%. Black people are inherently conservative. We love bibles, dollars, guns, and independence. Theoretically we should vote with the conservative party every time out. For me, the foundation of art appreciation is connecting with the artist empathetically. Pain is so universal but also so specific. An artist has every emotion in their tool kit, but people empathize with pain like nothing else, and building on that connection to grow in understanding and grow as a person is as rewarding an experience as I can ask for as a fan.
    For whatever reason though, I’ve never really felt connected to Kanye. He is an incredible musician and the unchallenged father of “emo rap”, but I just struggle to understand the person on the other side of the music. I can’t put my finger on it exactly, but he just doesn’t feel genuine to me. I think you hit the nail on the head. You can just tell he always wants something. Usually money or attention. He’s like a toxic chick making you feel shitty so you spend more money on her. Complete with the need to identify a pattern of behavior out concern for the genuine pain they seem to be accessing. He knows the MAGA crowd will tell him that he is right if he tells them they are right. That also reminds me of an unhealthy relationship. It’s manipulative and unpleasant to think about when I’m try to enjoy the music.

    Kanye is the modern day OJ. He ain't black he's Kanye. He was black but he isn't anymore... unless it benefits him. Being black isn't a monolith but you can't be black in the spiritual and social sense if you consciously and consistently do things that constantly undermine the black community. Then you turn around and support black people when you have an album coming. Similar to how OJ didnt do much for black people until his trial and he suddenly realized he's black. It's a circus and people fall for it every time because we strive to live off of celebrities. Kanye ain't black he's Kanye. Nothing wrong with that but we should stop treating him like he's black Jesus (sorry, Yeezus).

    • @TheCompanyMan
      @TheCompanyMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great analysis, AB. Does that fact that Kanye talks about black issues all the time separate him from OJ in your opinion?

    • @ayomideborisade1224
      @ayomideborisade1224 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheCompanyMan Kanye always talks about black issues when it benefits him which "coincidently" is when he has a product to sell or a rollout. He wore a "WLM" shirt at a fashion show for his newest clothing line. I wouldn't have known he had new season clothing if it wasn't for his stunt, would you?
      He goes on random rants when he has new music or shoes out. Likewise, OJ went to black consumers when he needed them during his trial and after when the whites shunned him. Show me one picture of OJ hanging with the blacks before the trial? Where was OJ when Ali and other black athletes were protesting going to Vietnam? The consistency doesn't matter, its the reason we should be looking at. Look at the 'why' and the timing and its the same shit.
      Is Kanye doing his latest stunt because he wants more sales from not just the blacks that always tune in but the whites as well? How long until Kanye claims he was off his meds as an excuse and goes back to being 'black'? (probably when he drops another album but we'll see).
      Backpack rap Kanye is not the new, corporate Kanye. New Kanye has merch to sell, and he's going to make as much noise as he needs to if it increases his brand, especially if he's dropping Adidas. That simple.

    I think this video becomes interesting when you contrast the unhealthy ways Kanye West has handled the pains of his past with how recently Kendrick Lamar has revealed going to therapy and gaining a healthy perspective and insight to the pain of his past. This becomes more interesting when, unlike Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar realised the unrealistic expectations of being seen as a saviour to the masses and how it can negatively affect a black artist's mental health; thus choosing to reject the label and being seen as an idealised figure.

      Really great analysis, WDB. Kanye's good for an apology tour, too. The Damage Control break down dives into that as well. He's done similar work to Kendrick, but nowhere to Kendrick's level of grace or maturity. Mr. Morale is still stuck with me and I stopped listening to it 2 weeks after it dropped. Masterful project.

    I've been tired of Kanye for years now. He completely lost me when he said that slavery was a choice.
    As a white male, I can't act like I understand the plight that people of color go through. However, from the outside looking in, I am able to see the disadvantage our society forces upon them. I know that pain of marginalization is there. Not just with Kanye, but with all Black Americans. So, when I see a person of influence throwing around such dangerous rhetoric, it bothers me. It's dangerous to say that slavery was a choice, it's dangerous for a person of influence over the black community like Kayne to befriend people like Tucker Carlson, Candace Ownes, and Donald Trump, and it's dangerous for him to promote a "White Lives Matter" shirt. Because this goes in direct opposition to the goals that the black community is trying to achieve.
    When you are fighting to prove that systemic racism is real and that it stems from slavery, it's dangerous and problematic when an icon and influential person like Kanye says that slavery was a choice. When you are fighting to prove that the people in power are the ones enabling systemic racism, it's dangerous when he becomes friends with those people, and when you have a nation fighting to make sure that black lives matter and are given the same consideration as white lives, it's dangerous and problematic for him to create and promote a white lives matter shirt.
    Kanye has proven time and time again that he doesn't care about the community that he is supposed to be fighting for, or at least he doesn't care as much about them as he does about himself and his money. I would like to think that the Black and Hip Hop communities are turning away from Kanye, and that's why he has been shifting to a conservative audience. But I honestly don't see that happening. I haven't seen a lot of lasting and damning backlash from either the Black or Hip Hop communities. Yes, you do see some people speak up after one of his antics. But, you never see anyone, especially well respected Hip Hop artists, throw their hands up and disown him. I have not been a fan of Kanye's music in a really long time because I am unable to separate the artist from the art. I can't justify listening to his music while he continues to try to destroy all the progress that society has made.

And, He'll just repeat this process the next time he has something he needs 🤷🏽‍♂️. Ye & R. Kelly are like pork as much as you try to eliminate them from your life, they find a way in. With all this ppl will still wear his shoes and listen to either his 🎶 or 🎶 he's produced. As much as ppl hate R. It's easier to tear things down than to build them up. Traffic backs up on both sides of the road no matter the side of the accident because people rubber neck. You cant turn away from the tragedy. I like how nuanced this take is but I think Ye's way more well intentioned than how some of his behaviour can come off, I don't think it's as self serving as many have alluded, he's definitely giving an olive branch to right wing extremists but it might be one America needs atm. Just like during the maga hat moment, I think he was looking at the division in the nation and the rising polar extremism. There's also definitely financial benefits, as well as his views being more coservative since he's been born again, but I think he's been pretty consistent in taking social stances he truly believes in, and I don't see him doing something exclusively for "the bag"

    • @TheCompanyMan
      @TheCompanyMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I definitely see him doing things he believes in. But I don't think anything supersedes Kanye's personal ambitions. And that includes the bag. Not exclusively in my opinion. Right. I tend to believe he believes in the things he's talking about. Being pro-life isn't inherently bad, for example. I just don't agree with legislating against a family's ability to choose. It's one thing to be anti LGBTQ. It's another thing to legislate against their rights. A lot of what Ye is talking about truly are issues that effect the black community. He's just willing to go to farther lengths than most to achieve the things he wants. That's where respect for his hustle gets dicey for me. Thanks, Jamie.

    Love the breakdown. I can understand using pain as an art form. That's what makes art sometimes truthfully amazing. But, Kanye is doing this at the expense of a group that has supported him at, pretty much, every turn. Spewing misinformation has a real impact on the individual that will spend 300$ on a pair of shoes! That he cares about life is great! But he goes on Tucker saying ‘50% of blacks have abortions procedures in NY city, 50% in the United States’ is wrong and has negative damages on black women who already suffered stigmatization from doctors, families, media, politicians, etc. The fact that African Americans have more abortions than whites and Hispanics is true. I’ll give him that! But, there are more reasons behind these stats than someone like Tucker and his crowd will ever understand or will want to understand! Hope the guy gets some help though!

    • @TheCompanyMan
