"from fight the power... to secure that bag" wow, that really stuck with me. countless years of conflict throughout the globe condensed in a short phrase. amazing Breakdown as always.
Wow. Shoutout that old woman!! Respect. Disrespect to a lot of the rest of Tennessee. Wild. (Also, I never noticed the Andre 3k photo above the door. I fuckin' love that.)
Oooooh, The Company Man bringing that political heat _and_ giving Arrested Development their flowers?!? I LOVE IT... not only did I just go back thru Arrested Development's catalogue last week but the _ridiculousness_ happening in Tennessee this week has me absolutely ON FIRE! The bans going on in recent years in red states are _insane..._ TALK TO 'EM, JUST!!! ✊✌🙏 Arrested Development has some of the greatest songs of the '90s, that take me _right back_ to childhood... "Revolution" from the Malcolm X soundtrack _(MY JAM!),_ "Tennessee", "People Everyday", "Mr Wendal"... incredible! PS. Gun violence is the #1 cause of death for little kids & teens in America right now. This has to stop... my senior yr of high school was the yr of Columbine, and we still haven't done anything. The _NRA-bought-and-paid-for_ GOP is sickening and they're blocking all progress in this nation!
Man, Justin, so much to say here, so, I will start with a simple thank you for your passion. This video crosses so many bridges for me. When I was 13 driving through the east Tennessee hills (my home) I heard the song 'Tennessee'. I did that thing where I memorized a few lyrics so I could then go back home and do a google search to find out the name of the song/group name. Once I found AD I listened to all of 3 years 5 months and 2 days on repeat for about... 3 years 5 months and 2 days lol. They were not only the group that introduced me to hip-hop but also the segway into Mos Def, LUPE FIASCO, Blu, Outkast, aka, music/musicians that made me feel like I was watching a Kubrick films with my ears. It struck that deep, plus it gave me a sample of the black experience. My dad was always hip to educating us about the history of the south and the black experience which kept me aware, but I was definitely missing hearing it from the mouth of the people who were affected by it...those who "climbed the trees" their "forefather hung from." I agree with you, that has to be one of the most bone chilling versus of all time. Like I said, that song was the prime mover for my love from hip-hop. Anyways, being from Tennessee and all, this video is conflicting. I've experienced so much good there, and i experienced so much stuff I hate, especially in Nashville (I don't like where that city in particular is heading after living there for 3 years.) I will also admit that I am a pretty devout Catholic, which means I am pretty anti-abortion because i think it is actually regressive, but will also say that the manner in which Tennessee goes about politics is quite off-putting. I am equally against tribalism and scapegoating, which I see Nashville building its foundation on. My point...prayers to Tennessee, prays of thanksgiving for 'Tennessee', and a big thank you to you and your journalism. Keep on doing you, brother. You make me want to write every time I come across one of your videos. Dom
I had completely missed out on Arrested Development, even as a fan of anything I found that fell within that native tongues sound. Saw them last summer at the Philadelphia Folk Festival, and they gave it everything for a crowd that in general is skeptical towards hip-hop. Speech is still killing it, the stage and their outfits were filled with Pan-African colors, the set was well choreographed and super visually appealing. They won over a lot of the crowd with a performance of Tennessee that leaned heavy in to the gospel sound, and I was swelling with sadness, appreciation and comfort all the same. I'm glad to see them getting their flowers here. Thanks for another great video man, probably one of my favorites of yours. The Democratic party has no interest in elevating these young black leaders and I can only hope the Tennessee GOP has made a mistake by giving them name recognition, because Justin Pearson's speech was incredibly moving.
Love that shirt my guy. Edit: "boomers went from free love to greed is good, we went from fight the power to secure the bag" - poignant observation man, damn...
Man this is one of the 1st videos I remember watching as a kid. Used to watch this videos with all my cousins, aunts and uncles watching. I’ll always remember the lady singing the ending
I heard this quote once - I’m sure it’s paraphrased from its source: “if you’re young and a republican, you don’t have a heart. If you’re old and a democrat, you don’t have a brain.” Stunning piece Justin. The way you bring together music, politics and culture is incredibly thought provoking. It begs the question: how do we think the world would change by the time gen z is old enough to start taking the majorities of these legislative bodies? Would conversations about guns & censorship be obsolete? Would AI and climate change be more prescient issues?
This Breakdown hit hard at so many points. Such great nuance. Living in the 'Sip, I have also unexpectedly stumbled into people like that store clerk, who surprise me. The lesson there is that people are individuals. Face punched for the Willie Jones intro; added to my playlist though. Thanks for that.
Really getting sick of punching myself in the face, 🤣😂🤣😂🤕. But man, another great video! And thanks for putting me on to Willie Jones. Dude is really talented.
I had to upper cut myself Too, Fam…!!! But the beautiful thing about punching ourselves in the face every Saturday from this show, It means we Learned Something New/Knew Today….One Love Fam
You were feeling the Tennessee lyrics The T-shirt lady story was amazing... I live in Indianapolis take a look at what the state house is doing here, Indiana is actually at the front of the line at most of the issues you listed I work in racial equity nationally, you're right... the desire to get the bag has to fall to the side if we don't do something we won't be allowed to have a bag We're watching authoritarian states pop up throughout the country 🤦🏾♂️
I just got back from a photo shoot and was not expecting something so heavy when I clicked on this... I will just go ahead and punch myself in the face now for not anticipating the weight. I remember rocking out to Tennessee hard when it first dropped, such a good song, and I also still get chills when I hear it to this day. As for what is going on in the US and Tennessee in particular, it makes me sad to see what my homeland has become, that progress seem to be a thing of the past. I have visited Tennessee a half dozen times or so and always enjoyed it. but that was well over a decade ago now. I'm on the save page with you regarding Gen Z, there is something special about them. I hope they can make change where our generations failed. And just one last point... its much easier to fight the power once you get the bag... just saying.
I had to stop the video and look up "green hat with an orange bill" to see if it was older than I thought, and perhaps the line I know is referencing an older line. Doesn't seem like it (but i'd be happy to find out im wrong and learn more) I use that line fairly regularly with people. To be completely honest Justin, this may have been one of my favorite Breakdowns so far. I love learning and I feel like I learned a lot. I punched myself in the face over Willie Jones because I did not know about him but I'm listening to him as I write this, I totally dig it. THANK YOU for reminding me Arrested Development is GREAT! Much like a movie or show "watchlist" I have a music one and Arrested Development has long been on it because of how progressive they seemed, so I appreciate you highlighting it and reminding me I need to do my due diligence on that thought. (sidenote: Prog-Rap is a term I would love to see Gen-Z coin) "fight the power, to secure the bag" tho..... (I got best Breakdown vibes prior to that moment, but that confirmed it for me) "YEEZUS!" "It's All Happening!"
92 is the year of EPMD and GANGSTARR. That's it. But this video was dope! Can't believe we were all dancing hard to this song and didn't fully absorb the lyrics. The 90s is really THE era!!!
Converging entertainment and intelligence. ❤ Willie and I love you for always contributing to the discussion and your cameo in Runs in Our Blood video still is forever frozen in time 5:30
I knew this video was going to be Fire🔥🔥🔥🔥 as soon as I saw the title! A TBD classic video once again! That album is a certified classic and this week in Tennessee looked like the collapse of Reconstruction 2.0
What a great story, I love this channel. Raised in California I moved to Biloxi Mississippi when I was 18. It was a culture shock for sure but once I got past that, I learned to love the south and it's distinct culture. Great video overall, I love this channel!
Thank you for another one. The state of politics at this point is sad. that kids protection is not a shared value. An I don't feel it's going to better. Values of today is I'm get mine and not worry about next generation. From fight the power to get the bag , well said.
Needs to be a movement that moves beyond the moment - a pursuit of going from “Wow! That sucks for THEM” - and transition to - “Yo, this is rolling downhill to ME, this is relevant to ME! This is MY fight now and I need to learn how to join this fight BEFORE it’s too late to make any difference…. THEM IS ME! 😮”
Thank you Justin... First thing I want to say is Willie Jones is an amazing artist. I discovered him last summer and fell in love with his music. Now onto the message about the TN legislative body, they are rolling back time to when they were children and our generation (the hip hop generation) definitely needs to step up and fight back. I feel like the South needs a voice to galvanize them against this rollback. Once again you are poignant with your topics. And there was no reason to bring it back around. One Love
Ouf, those final words. I’m looking at “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop” on my bookshelf right now, thinking I’ll go read it again. Believe it or not that book was my introduction to the fact that at one time hip hop was and could have remained an art form/form of entertainment with an acknowledged political force…prior to that, I did not see it as ever having been that!
When it comes to politics it feels like hip hop got stuck in 2020. IF they talk about politics at all in music it's always police brutality and George Floyd references as if that's the only threat to our people. So thank you for discussing this because unfortunately we have a lot more on our plates and we need to talk about that stuff too.
Ha! The Kris Kross respect is felt. I remember when I heard I missed the bus for the first time at a talent show in 2nd grade. And I lost my mind, I was like, THIS SONG UNDERSTANDS ME! 🤣
Paul Sherrell was 9 when MLK was shot in Memphis, and I imagine he got it into his head the lynching is a good thing at a young age despite the civil rights movement being in full swing through his youth. The scariest thing to me is that I have no clue how that is going to happen. Incredible work as always Justin. Difficult to stare these issues in the face but incredibly important, and taking the time to listen to and love Arrested development is downright therapeutic.
The song was on my mind this week as well after hearing the insanity happening. Great video and I'm hoping Gen Z can save us...let's hope that these radical voting laws don't keep preventing free and fair elections as well.
@ 16:00 in man Hip-Hop has become so lame i think about old rap names and how they had character and style its regressed to letters of the alphabet and baby, younin, or boy. They all kids man dman🤣 its so disappointing
"will they go from fight the power, to secure that bag?" 🤯 I clapped in my living room hearing that. Keep up the good work TCM!
Thank you, MBC
Felt that one in my soul... I had to punch myself in the face.
Makes me think of that Tupac interview on Mortal Man. You only have your young years to to fight(paraphrasing )
"from fight the power... to secure that bag"
wow, that really stuck with me. countless years of conflict throughout the globe condensed in a short phrase.
amazing Breakdown as always.
On point again. Excellent commentary Justin.
'Fight the power' to 'Secure that bag' YEEZUS!!
This was one of your best. Keep going!
Your videos are always on time. "But I am still thirsty."✊🏾
Simply Thanks Brother Justin Hunt…!!! 1 Love…!!!
Great commentary as usual. 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿✊🏿

I love the secure that bag comment..... it the reason for all the problems honestly.

I gotta admit, I've never heard of Willie Jones... I now have a black eye and swollen knuckles.

Amazing song and good message
And the next host of the daily show is….#TCM
Excellent reporting my dude.
It’s funny how I was just listening to them the other day. One of my first albums I got from my mom as a kid. Good times! Great piece as always ☮️

Correct. Him and baba went to school together. They were in Atlanta when they debuted.
Damn this was a good video, and I didn’t even know all that bullshit was going on in the capital of the current state I’m living in smh
This is why I always say I’m from Memphis, not Tennessee

that clip at the end 💀💀

When Trump won the election of 2016 i straight up played, “Revolution”! Wished you would have mentioned that song! It still goes hard!

Hope they fight for reparations for foundational black Americans, with that same energy, now that would be revolutionary.
