Nice video... what I did with this issue was... I had already eliminated the heater core previously due to leak... this nipple and tube is the return for the heater core, so I found a nut and bolt the same diameter as the hole, pumped it full of gasket sealant, tightened nut and let set. No leak and the issue is fixed.

Hey. Thank you for your video. I tried to get the nipple at the dealership, but it would have to be ordered and Shipped from Detroit. Anyway.. I ended up going to a pick your own part yard. I found various parts that could work. Lots of cars have nipples on power steering pumps or manifold. Instead of using a hose clamp? I used a long bolt that fit inside tube, a washer. At the other end I used a socket nut and washer. All I did was slowly tighten the nut. It pressed the tube in perfectly. I also put some gasket seal on the tube just to add a better seal. After that replacing the water pump and inlet tube was a breeze. Lastly I added a bottle of radiator flush. After a couple days I will flush it, and put a new fail safe thermostat. Thanks so much for your help. Now the van is purring. No leaks.

Great video homie. That's exactly the help I needed. Didn't realize that they sold the nipple. I was ready to thread that cover and insert a hose connector. Thank you

Ernesto Medina I was thinking the same thing until I realized the housing is also the timing chain cover and the thought of cracking it scared me too much. With my luck I would.

Ok folks. I'm going to start a war here. Remove your water pump for access to the back side of the nipple bore. Remove the short heater hose from the steel tube. Look in the nipple bore and make sure none of the rusty nipple is left in the bore. If there is any left in the bore, a long screw driver and a "pecking" hammer will knock it out from the water pump side. Take your time. Don't damage the timing cover. Clean it out with the male end of a battery post brush. Find you a 3/8 pipe tap. The clean nipple bore is already the correct size for the tap. Make sure and tap the bore straight. Do not try to tap all the way through the bore because it is stepped. Use a 3/8 pipe to I believe 1/2" nipple. Same size as the heater line. A single wrap of Teflon thread tape works nice. Yes there is plenty of room under the vehicle to do this. Install a new heater hose. Consider installing a new water pump. I've done probably a dozen of these.

Definitely not gonna start a war! Fixing my car with a frying pan and c-clamp was definitely a last ditch solution. I’m an amateur at best, and don’t have tools and know how, so better methods are welcome! I hope the people who watch this read your comment for a frying pan-free method! 😂

The nipple broke flushed to the water pump. Im afraid to hit it with the screw driver but I'll try now. Wish you could do a video. I went to the dealer and paid almost 50 dollars now to try to take that remaining nipple out.

Oh thank you so much! You are definitely right about being the ONLY one with a video for this! I've been searching for days! Now I'm just hoping to be able to get it done!

Well. This happened tonight on my cousin's van. Thanks for the vid, helps me get a mental image of what this job be like. I was finding a leak, and wiggling the source of leak and the nipple just completely came off... So im hoping to do this without removing the water pump and somehow be able to tap the new nipple fitting in (coating in sealant) since there is nothing there anyways...now.. and hope it seals.....

Good luck with the job. I know taking the water pump out is a pain in the butt, but it makes the job easier to get the leverage you need to seat the nipple. If you apply that kind of pressure to the pulley you’re likely to break it.
Also, make SURE you check the nipple hole on the water pump housing for any leftover parts of the old nipple. If you shove the new one in and force a ring or chunks of the old one into your water pump chamber you will be in a world of hurt. Good luck!!!

2023 i found a leak behind the water pump. The nipple completly broke leaving half of the part inside. How can i take it out. Got the water pump out. Dont want to damage the housing. I read on a coment here to slowly use a fly screw driver. Ohh well wish me luck. Btw there still no more videos about this nipple replacement.

Hey man, just seeing this now! Sorry for late reply, hope your repair went well! Please share the story!
As far as the broken piece of nipple, I’d be nervous myself. I got lucky on mine because it had corroded so badly it just came right out of the housing. I think some very tiny taps with a small screw driver to see if you get some movement. If not, I’d stop and try to find a ratchet head that just the right size to push with a c-clamp. Sorta reverse what I did in this video and with a small ratchet head that will push the nipple out.
Hope it went well, man! Good luck!
Ps, I’m about to try and pop a cracked freeze plug out of my 89 f150 with engine in place! Yikes! So I feel your pain!

I'm truly grateful for the video you made explaining the problem of the leaking tube behind the water pump housing and now I have a much better understanding of what I am up against when I commence the task involved in replacing the damaged tubing. Thank you.
