  • Resident Evil's been on a roll since RE7, but does Village continue that trend or is the series sliding back into its old ways?

    A kicker to this game has to be just how rare it is for a husband and father to feature as the protagonist of a story, rather than some inept and/or malicious figure. It won major points with me for that alone.

      @@dvdbox360 You reply as if those titles aren't decades old at this point. The entire idea here is that modern, current AAA games don't portray a father/husband very positively nowadays with VERY few exceptions. SH is also a bit of a dodgy choice, given character baggage.

      @@adaptivegamer9905 He did technically get more of a hurrah in Shadow of Rose. You really don't get to be more of a super dad than from reaching beyond DEATH to help your child. And I tend to think he didn't just pass his "power" to Rose, either. The post-credits scene where she's leaving his grave, the figure walking on the side of the road, is Ethan.
      It wasn't said outright, but I tend to think that means he's with her after that. If/when the series goes long enough that Rose appears as an adult, it would not be beyond the pale for Ethan to "appear" again in the form of giving advice or spurring Rose to go on when things get tough. Especially if she carries on wearing his jacket and all, and being told she's a lot like him.
      The little things with them were so great. She was tucked into his jacket when he stayed behind, she wore it once old enough. The way she goes from incredulous and awkward about doing something in a dangerous situation to being determined and fighting through it like he did. It's tough to pick out anything she got from Mia, really.
      It's a shame a chunk of the fanbase got so huffy about being tired of The Winters' story. A lot of these same people were probably the same ones that kept saying RE needed something new after 6, and now they're like "all right, job done let's have the old guard back"

      @@The_Lucent_Archangelthat’s more Silent Hill 2. The father in Silent Hill was a good guy. Also, how the original, given how difficult it is to just find, hasn’t gotten some kind of remake is beyond me. Apparently they lost the original masters, so a remaster was apparently a no-go. I have a PS1 copy, but it’s kinda a pain just to set up the console for that. RE style remakes of the first three games would be great. I think they are doing one for 2 at the moment.

    Despite everything I liked the segment playing as Chris. After the whole game being abused and chased by these Lycans it was quite cathartic having the upper hand and moving through them. Also shows the progression, Chris have been fighting these biomutants for over 20 years now, he knows what he's doing and has the specialized equipment to do so. (and also shows why a zombie invasion could never happen, as long as there's a standing army in the country)

    12:50 I don't get the complaints about Sniper Rifle. It came in handy when Lady D flew far away and you could snipe her from distance. Lycans set a multitude of ambush points around the Village that you can spot from distance and do a pre-emptive strike with Sniper Rifle. Even ignoring the distance, Sniper Rifle is a powerful weapon in and of itself; if you need to kill a tough enemy or a boss, Sniper Rifle is your friend. It's slightly unwieldy at close distance, but it still does its job. How could you not find a use for it?

    • @salsamancer
      @salsamancer 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Yeah the rifle is very useful. It's strong and accurate and unlike the magnum you get plenty of ammo .

      Not just that, but the ammunition is plentiful, making it extremely useful in boss encounters where you will likely not have enough magnum or shotgun ammunition left. Even taking out ambush enemies here and there, I had an assload of that ammunition at the end of my first playthrough.

      I still think that the castle is one of the better parts of the game honestly. Just in terms of feeling, because you are basically hunted throughout the part of the game. It is also between beautiful and disgusting when you discover what is going on or was going on in it.

    • @DocOck
      @DocOck 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@LamiNalchor I don't think you understand the terms Linear and Non-Linear.
      Non-Linear is something like Breath of the Wild where, after the tutorial section, you can go anywhere do anything and fight whatever boss in any order you want, including the final boss.
      Linear is something like RE1 where in order to complete the game you have to complete the same puzzles in the same order in the same sequence no matter what. Backtracking =/= Non-Linear.
      That's not a nock against RE. All Horror games at the time and even most now are very Linear. It's just the nature of the game. It allows for the devs to have complete control over every aspect of the user experience to more easily facilitate the horror.
      It's weird you mention 0 as that game starts you on a train and there's only two ways to go; forward and back.
      As for my credentials as an RE fan;
      The original RE3 is Code Veronica.
      Nemesis' Original subtitle was Last Escape.
      And for something more modern;
      Laon A/Claire B is the canon story for Remake 2.

    And to think that this is game is in the same continuity as the one with, as Heisenberg mentioned, that "boulder punching a**hole".
    As much as I loved this game, there are definitely things I dislike, the most egregious of which was how Spencer was both saved and inspired by Miranda, ultimately leading to the events of the Resident Evil series.
    I'm curious if the Capcom writers plan on doing anything to the Revelations games since, you know, another Wesker is still out there possibly biding their time.

    If I had to justify Chris not telling Ethan about Miranda being his wife in disguise, I would chalk it up to Chris either knowing or heavily suspecting that Ethan is one of the Mold now. And given how Eveline was able to corrupt and mind control the Bakers in the previous game, Chris thinks that something similar might be going on here.
    As for Chris not roping in Ethan later on in the village, I’d either move Ethan’s encounter with Chris to a bit later in the game, with it being much briefer, Chris and company having only just arrived and are playing catch up with what’s happening since they last spied on Miranda. And them as a whole being somewhat suspicious that Miranda is using Ethan to kill off the Lords, because Miranda doesn’t want to share power and that she, even in canon, only ever viewed the Lords as pawns.
    I do agree that Miranda as a character was kind of flat and didn’t get enough screen time to really flesh her out. Honestly, I would have combined her with elements of Lady-D’s personality, in order to give her both charisma and more of a larger than life personally to make her more memorable. Though maybe borrow Lady-D’s dragon form for the later stage of Miranda’s boss fight- as given the links to Umbrella and Miranda’s more angelic motif, the dragon helps hammer home the more satanic elements of her character as a corrupter and all around evil person, who’s love for her long-dead daughter felt more selfish then actually loving.

    • @reykaisertv
      @reykaisertv 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I never considered the fact that Chris may have been privy to Ethan’s “moldification,” but his biggest sin was executing “Mia” right in front of Ethan with no warning. Certainly he could’ve caught her while Ethan was at work and dealt with Ethan in private later.
      The main reason Capcom did Chris dirty was to shock the player and create intrigue for the story, but I’d hate for this to be a player’s first encounter with the legendary GOOD GUY Chris Redfield.

    • @The_Lucent_Archangel
      @The_Lucent_Archangel 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@reykaisertv I don't know about intrigue. I think they were trying to craft a Wesker-like aesthetic around him. The high collar, all black, suppressed pistol is the exact getup Wesker used to use when he was running around undermining Umbrella for his own gain prior to just becoming another throwaway crazy villain.
      Chris was also operating outside the lines here. He wasn't technically working directly under BSAA orders, which is why his team was keen on engaging the BSAA when they arrived. He probably IS some sort of rogue actor, likely considered a renegade by at least some of the major players.
      If anything, I think it retroactively creates interest to new people, because they'll inevitably learn Chris is a longtime character and will want to see how he changed over the course of the series.

    I think one of the ways they could have fixed the story, even if it was so minor, is that Chris should go ahead and tell Ethan right there at the beginning this is not your wife this is Miranda, then Ethan goes with Chris to try to protect Rose, then the ambush happens where the cars get knocked over and Rose goes missing, Ethan is the first to wake up he tries to wake up Chris, but then realizes Rose is missing so he runs off by himself to try to save her because it is his daughter. While through this whole thing wondering what happened to Mia. I think they could have kept Chris his less of a dick attitude in this story while also really removing why Chris had to act so mysterious through this. There really was no point in him trying to be mysterious. If anything do I thought Ethan was getting training from Chris so if anything Chris would tell Ethan about what's happening.

You need beauty to contradict the filth, which makes the horror that much more potent. If they made a game that played like 7, with the art design of 8, it might be the best RE yet!

    Also, its been a theory of mine that Chris was the one that was supposed to be killed, especially since he's getting up there in years, but that someone chickened out and insisted they couldnt kill Chris Redfield. (Especially in a game that didnt have Wesker in it, imo)
    Depending on how they did it, it couldve been so intense.

    Drinker... That double door that bugged you at the end of Resident Evil 1 on the original Playstation - You mentioned it in a previous review that you always wanted to go through it/wondered what was on the other side/thought it was odd it was there but not accessible. Well, it turns out you CAN go through it, but only if you get the bad ending (i.e. play as Jill, Barry dies in the caves and you only fight the Tyrant once in the lab). After the lab fight with the Tyrant, you pick up a key from Weskers body and exit via THAT door (from the other side though - Its the room with a ladder, typewriter and box).
    You exit via that door because with the bad ending there is no second Tyrant fight on the helipad and the mansion does NOT explode - Instead you get a scene of the Tyrant watching you fly away with ominous music playing.
    I've completed the game a million times back at the time of release, modern day, and even I only just got that ending a couple years ago and I was like wtf how come i've never seen this 😲 I only got the ending because I Fecked up in the caves... I had paused it to do something right at the point Barry ran off, then I un-paused and didn't realise where he ran to and I retardedly ran the opposite direction causing him to die by hunter - As Barry would say "I was careless".
    There is also an "ultimate cut" which is a modded directors cut but it has the "good music" re-inserted, together with uncut/colour and higher quality FMV. Can download online, burn to disc/run on original hardware or play via emulator.
    Anyway, hope you see this post as there is nothing more satisfying than a mystery solved and greetings from sunny East Ayrshire.

    • @suavebob
      @suavebob 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@peterc3262 Awww poor you getting the bad ending right off the bat and more so, poor Barry haha.
      I am in the same camp on RE, directors cut is questionable on content. I had the original back in the day then bought DC expecting uncut FMV's and was sorely disappointed as we all know.
      Honestly though, the RE Ultimate Directors Cut is the happy medium, keeps original item placement (with option to do DC rejiggered) and keeps the original/good music. The PC has the best port nowadays though with an AI upscale, implements quick turn etc and just runs more friendly on modern systems.
      Out of curiosity, back in the day were you PAL or NTSC? I played on PAL 50hz back in the day (didn't know any better/wasn't much choice) and with some games I run nowadays I notice the 60hz (20%) difference in game speed and I lean back to the PAL slower speed because its what I was used to.
      I don't think so much with RE as i've become accustomed to that speed playing all the different versions but some games my timing is definitely off.

    I actually enjoyed village quite a bit, sure the beginning was exposition-heavy, but that lycant attack was a great intro, obviously a homage to 4, and I enjoyed the variety in level-design: The Castle has puzzles, and more standard enemies, House Benavento is almost all puzzle and has no weapons, the wolf segment on the way to the dam has players running from cover to cover, then the more action-heavy lab and Chris segments, has plenty of side quests and unlockable content as well. Played it again in VR mode and holy crap, had family members quit playing it because of how scary it was (VR hits different).

    Also regarding the inventory management, I can understand people wanting limited space like the legacy games but that definitely needed to be modernized, especially since Village used Resident 4 as a basis for its game design. It was definitely an 8.5/10 for me, my favorite after RE4.

      "I can understand people wanting limited space like the legacy games but that definitely needed to be modernized, especially since Village used resident 4 as a basis for its game design."
      Nope. In RE4, you're ALWAYS managing your inventory, even after you've completely maxed out the size of it. In village, you never need to manage it. You can conquer the whole game without doing it. I like Village. It's fun and enjoyable, but it's very flawed. For a game that's inspired by RE4, it completely misses the point of it and holds your hand. It's NOT a challenging game. The "puzzles" aren't puzzles, and the amount of scripted segments (House Beneviento, specifically) is a massive turn off.
      Heisenberg's factory is best section of the game because it's the only area where you can easily get lost and have to figure out where to go--a fundamental element of the classic games, 7, and the remakes of 2 and 4.

    Yeah, it’s ridiculous that they didn’t see that Lady D and her daughters were the most engaging part of the game. Even outside of the attraction to the characters, they are the most intriguing. Mother Miranda is an absolute joke, plus her plan of “splitting the baby apart, giving each piece to the boss, then taking them back” is such a forced video game concept. Just ridiculous.o

    Once games began getting too long for reviewers to finish before submitting some 'hype', developers simply began putting the best in the beginning. The first 10-20 hours tops in most every game today is the best part of the experience with either the story falling apart or disappearing , or the grind begins as artificial speed bumps to slow your progress to finish. BTW - I'm sick of STAMINA being the new difficulty gate as developers use it to control everything about a player today.

    I think RE4 did a great job balancing the RE formula while exploring some medieval/fantasy-religious influences. That's something that RE8 couldn't do. There was too much Tim Burton and "Twilight" than there was RE. RE4 had motivation from the bad guys even though they were a religious cult out of the way from the original zombie outbreak but it showed that other places were infected and there was a cult who wanted to control it and use it for power. RE8 kinda comes off random in a lot of ways but is still enjoyable.

    In my opinion Code Veronica is the most difficult and frustrating Res Evil game in the whole franchise. Not only do you have to start again from scratch if you don't have enough powerful ammo to fight the tyrant boss on the plane, but if you get all the way to Antarctica and you left your fire extinguisher in the metal detector on the island (like I did) you also can't proceed any further because you need to use it again, and you don't get another. You should play Res Evil 4 remake. It's fantastic, but unfortunately I have to go to my sister's to play it because she has a PS5.
