    The main issue with curved displays to me is they're reliant on staying in the perfect sweetspot. I like to sit up close to the screen when gaming and lean back, reclining my chair when doing things like watching TH-cam. Plus I'm a bit of a spaz and can't sit still for more than a few minutes.
    If you leave that sweetspot you also get warping of the image which can also be annoying and for some even nauseating. I mean, I never had issues with 3D TVs and displays yet I hear people say it all the time.

    • @yedrellow
      @yedrellow ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's an aspect I didn't really think about. I lean closer because my vision is bad and sometimes to snipe pixels at long range with iron sights in games, I just need to. If the curve forces a sweetspot, it really doesn't take that use-case into account.

      I don't really get what you mean, of course everything is always warped on a curved screen no matter what angle you sit at. It's warped in the shape of.. a curve. But that's kinda the point

    I have both.Curved monitors only make sense if you're buying a screen 34 inches or larger. For 27-32 inch screens they make very little sense, and they're very much INFERIOR in every meaningful way to a quality IPS or OLED panel that's flat. Color accuracy is more consistent on flat panels, and the viewing angle as well. Oh, and about 90% of all curved monitors on the market use inferior HVA panels.

    If I recall curved monitors aren't ideal for competitive gaming due to the curvature distorting the player's fov which can in turn cause inconsistencies when playing at a high level. If you're a casual user, then having a curve monitor would be the better choice but if you want to play games semi competitively, choosing a flat monitor would be a safer option.

    All perspective content (both games and film) are projected onto flat planes, not curved. So technically you're seeing a warped image on curved displays. No idea how perceptible this error is, but it's possible that it bothers people!
    Games could theoretically do correct projection for a curved display... would be interesting to test 🤔

    • @ecvent0r
      @ecvent0r 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Wouldn't the viewing distance also factor into this? If you were looking through a window instead of a monitor sitting closer should increase the FOV but on a monitor when playing games it does not so I suspect the correctness of that projection depends on being at the correct viewing distance at the correct monitor size, so I wonder whether this perfect projection is realistically what most people experience on flat displays.

    This is all depending on the size monitor. The large the monitor the more pronounced the curve generally is. The Corsair flex is the only one that allows you to adjust the curve.
    For movies the curve is best at the center whereas a flat is beneficial for all angles. The curve will get in the way of you sit at a far angle.
    For gaming the curve is best up close allowing you to see content at the far edge clearly without any distortion or greyness compared to a large flat monitor even OLED.

      That's interesting. I see that HDTV being way overpriced compared to the c3 for what you get. Same 4k 120hz on a 16:9 for a crazy price over the existing c3 42" with the only main advantage of flexing. This tv also has no wall mount vesa holes. It also protrudes out quite a bit from the stand compared to the c3.

  • @Eddy_Stylez

    Ultrawide in general is more immersive than a 16:9 simply because it takes up more of your field of view. Doesn't matter if it's curved or not, unless you're sitting in a racing/flight sim cockpit with massive monitors actually fully surrounding you. To the average person comparing a 32" ultrawide flat vs curved, the curved it just going to look like the picture is bent/warped. The eyes adjust to the curvature eventually and you don't even notice it anymore which is also kind of funny, proving the point that it doesn't really even matter.

  • @nicholash8021

    The problem with curved is that it solves only one dimension of curvature (section of a cylinder). It needs to be spherical (section of a sphere) for each pixel to be equidistant from your eyes. That's why the screen seems pinched in the middle vs the corners on a curved monitor. Therefore, it's a half-baked solution which, after owning two of them, got really annoying to me to deal with as a coder. I went back to flat monitors.

    It pisses me off so much when people go "oh the ONLY reason for curved screens is because it isn't an IPS panel". Like yes, that is A REASON that they were developed (high resolution screens where you're closer means a greater viewing angle at the edges so you get washed out colors, etc), but there are a LOT of other benefits! Eye strain is the main benefit, it is proven with actual experimental studies that curved monitors reduce eye strain/fatigue. It increased the time required to have eye-fatigue/strain by a factor of 3. It's massive. I got a 1440p 27 inch curved display to replace by old ass 24 inch 1080p 10 year old monitor. It is amazing. When compared to a flat IPS panel I would choose a curved VA display any day for eye strain.

    The future of gaming will be on a concaved screen not yet invented. It will provide an almost 4D immersion and things like VR will be novelties. We'll see them in about 6 yrs as the technology is taking us in that direction.

      It's actually probably going to be either ocular implants or some kind of contact lens using nano technology.

    For immersion maybe, but what if you're trying to play a competitive shooter?
    I am not 100% sure it affects aim, but there is no adoption at all of curved screens from top competitive players, so clearly the top comp players themselves seem to think so.

    • @raptorhacker599

    I suspect that many people avoid curved displays because their only experience with them was with a curved TV. At least this was my case, I knew curved TVs were a bad idea and I assumed the same is true for curved monitors. But when you take into account the different use cases of monitors and TVs, then curved monitors make sense.

    Problem with curved is not all shows or games fit the screen so like 25% of screen not being used I don’t get why they put majority of high end monitors curved really kills it

      No, you don't even take advantage of the curve in the monitor until you're well beyond 32 inches. Read the studies.
