How To Install Factory Firmware on the Anet A8 3D Printer

  • Whether you've just installed a bootloader on your Anet A8, or you simply want to reinstall the original factory firmware, this video will get you going in the right direction. But can you install firmware on a 3D printer from a Mac? Yes, of course you can. Let me show you how.
    Huge thanks to Mark Corliss (Corliss Media 2.0) for generously covering the cost of the Anet A8 used in this episode. We'll be using it in a series of episodes where we install the Klipper firmware, but for now, we need to have SOME kind of firmware on board, and so factory firmware it is!

    Bryan, your video was clear and easy to understand. As a total computer noob I had no trouble at all (except when downloading the wrong version of Arduino...it only seems to work with the specific version mentioned in video). This saved my printer when all else failed. Thank you so much for all your help and all the videos you make :)

    • @BV3D
      @BV3D  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tekkie Dad! Given that it's being hosted on Dropbox, I suspect it's something that a person got from Anet support, and then posted to make it easier for others to get. Just for fun I wrote an AppleScript to significantly ease the process of re-flashing the firmware, but the code makes too many assumptions about its environment for me to be comfortable releasing it.
      As a personal project I may write a GUI utility that acts as a wrapper around the avrdude utility for Mac folks, specifically for doing stuff like this. No guarantees on whether that will ever see the light of day, though.

    Brian, thanks for a great tutorial and all your help and guidence with my issues! I today I flashed the board with marlin. Then set out to flash with the Anet auto level... I could not get around this - "No such file or directory...."avrdude: error reading system wide configuration file "/Users/jenkins/jenkins/workspace/avrdude-staging/label/mac-mini/objdir/etc/avrdude.conf" To day i downloaded and moved over files from my iMac to a mac Mini some confusion coz this...ls -1 /dev/tty.* brought up ( to my thinking) two usb options! I tried re-flashing it again but this doesn't change anything. So i tried a spare board and again succesfull flash according to avrdude,but again blank display and weird beeping. Do you have any idea what went wrong ? I almost looks like the HEX file is corrupted. Thanks in advance. Pascal

All the files needed are either linked in the description or I show you where to get them in the video. That video uses an Anet A8 configuration which is included in with the Marlin firmware, and the configuration is set for a single extruder. Hi Brian ! I've followed all your instructions on how to burn a bootloader and how to install the factory firmware of the ANET A8.
    Everything was a success unless after the factory firmware was installed, when I plug the board to a computer or turn the whole printer on, the screen remains blue with no display and produces very scattered beeps.
    Would you know what caused this ?

    • @BV3D
      @BV3D  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lucas! It sounds like the firmware and the board don't like each other. When I did this video, I used an Anet v1.5 main board. I don't *think* that makes a difference, but what version is yours? You might try flashing the Anet firmware onto the board a second time. Also, you could try installing the Marlin firmware on the printer (see th-cam.com/video/V7_zIQALk6E/w-d-xo.html).

I’m just fishing for some type of help or advice on it. Should I swap out the other motherboard that he sent me, I’m kind of scared to use it because I see a mark where it look like something overheated or burned on it connecting to the bed temperature screws at the bottom of it

      @BV3D  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Adrian! Great question. You'll have an easier time of it with Windows. When you download the A8 firmware using the link in the description, the zip archive also contains a Windows app called "avrdudess". This gives you a graphical interface to the avrdude utility. It's an older version, and when you launch it, it may complain that it's missing a USB library. That's OK: The software offers to install an update which includes the missing library. There's also a screenshot in the zip archive showing what options to set.
      Using either procedure, you should be able to flash any firmware file to the A8.

If you download the firmware file from the link in the description, the 0_update_firmware_guied folder (I think that's a misspelling of the word "guide") directory contains a Windows application called avrdudess. There's a PNG image showing how to set all the controls in that application, and a readme file that MAY point you in the right direction.
      That readme may be difficult to follow. If so, check out some of Chris Riley's videos on his channel (Chris's Basement; th-cam.com/channels/qRiv7rQuxge63bqJ2hVNUQ.html).

      In here: "flash:/Users/yourname/Desktop/0_update_firmware_guied/A8-L_firmwareUpdate.hex", you needed to specify a write operation immediately after the word "flash".
      It should look something like this: "flash:w:/Users/yourname/Desktop/0_update_firmware_guied/A8-L_firmwareUpdate.hex" (there's a "w:" after "flash:").
      Hope that helps!
