THANK YOU DANIEL!!!! I have owned an Anet A8 for two years but was always hesitant to change the firmware as other tutorials and info were kind of confusing and I did not want to brick my printer. Daniel's videos are very clear and understandandable as to showing what steps are necessary to upgrade to Marlin. I followed step by step as Daniel showed and was able do the upgrade without any problems whatsoever! I now have Marlin 1.1.9 and thermal runaway protection. Once again THANK YOU DANIEL!!!!

I am glad to hear that the Anet v.1.7 boards are still flashable via USB. I just bought my first 3D printer, an Anet e16, and that is what it has in it. I'm going to go and try this out this weekend!

This was a fantastic guide. Even though now the 1.8.9 version works just fine. The one problem I had was my own fault was make sure no other programs are running that may block access to the printer. For me it was cura, even though I've had it open for days before getting my printer it automatically connected itself the moment I plugged it in and it was blocking me from updating merlin. That added about 20 minutes to my day lol. Now I get to actually try setting this bugger up to print!

I remember figuring all that out myself without knowing anything about it prior to putting my printer kit together a number of years ago. I won't say how many hours, days, weeks or months (I don't even want to remember how long) it took me to finally figure it out but I did it! All by myself! I didn't know what Marlin was or what printer I had or anything. LOL!

This is a great way to get in touch with the shortcomings of the Atmega1284p and then long for the days of through-hole chips and sockets. Graphic display + SD card + filament change is already too much for 128k.
Technically you could still swap it for the 2560 and enable features to your heart's content but it's safe to say that's a good option for only the most skilled of absolute cheapskates vs Arduino Mega+ RAMPS.
My cheapskate solution was just not to get the graphic display and hardcode my calibrations into firmware without EEPROM save.

Just ordered one have a couple tevo's and like them, a lot and they are dialed in. I feel like building an anet a8 is a right of passage :D in the 3d print world. I really want to build it and mod it to mirror a Prusa mk3s. Some money investing for sure but I think it is going to be a fun project for the winter months here in Michigan.

Marlin is installed now and I'm glad. Next project is to build my own frame and put a 32 bit control board on it.

    Hi Daniel,
Thanks a lot for the good work you are investing on this!
    Can you please clarify:
What is the better option: completely disconnect the printer’s main board from the printer while bootloader burning or let it in place and turning on while connected to the avr programmer? (Different sources state differently)

    • @Crosslink3D

If I do this one time and install Marlin into my anet A8 board, then if I need to change something in the programm few days later, for example some data in configuration.h folder, do I need to use USBASP, USBTinyisp or Arduino UNO all this percedure again? Or I need just connect Anet A8 board with computer and upload without these programmers?

for anyone that is struggling to install a bootloader via a USBasp you will need to download zadig and install the driver for the USBasp via that and have it as libusbk(v3.0.7.0) or libusb-win32 (v1.2.6.0) so arduino ide can use it and if it fails to burn you will need to change the arduino AVR Boards by arduino ( the one at the very top) on the board manager to version 1.6.9 and make sure your 3D printer board has nothing plugged into it and is also powered off and it should work but you will need to change the board back to what you had it as before changing it so you can then upload marlin onto it

Dumb question...the A8 board is basically plug n play no need to change some things and no way...that I know ...of changing other things. So if I upload Marlin, the board gets a cut down version due to chip size limits....do, is whats left going to put me back to the start up ready to go as the A8 firmware does? I ask because I see FB posts about re writing settings and uploading the adjusted FW.

So if I have a working anet a8 board that is already flashed with marlin but I want to make changes to the config, and those changes result in drawing too big. I will need a usbasp module to get optiboot loaded so I can further customize marlin? Am I understanding this correctly?

    • @Crosslink3D
      @Crosslink3D  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi, Thanks for your comment! If you managed to flash Marlin with the USB cable you can do this multiple times. The usbasp is only needed if you run into issues or if you run out of flash memory because the firmware gets too big. Then you need to flash either the optiboot bootloader or flash without a bootloader. The bootloader is making it possible to flash over usb.

    Hi Daniel,
I've got some problems in upgrading the firmware of my Anet A8 to the Marlin Firmware 1.1.9. When compiling the firmware, I always get a lot of error messages regarding redefining of timers (see example):
In file included from C:\Program Files (x86)\Arduino\hardware\arduino\avr\cores\arduino/Arduino.h:257:0,
    from sketch\HAL.h:36,
    from sketch\MarlinConfig.h:39,
    from sketch\G26_Mesh_Validation_Tool.cpp:27:
    C:\Users\Michael\Documents\Arduino\hardware\anet\avr\variants\sanguino/pins_arduino.h:43:0: warning: "TIMER2" redefined
    #define TIMER2 5
at the end of the compilation, the message says:
Der Sketch verwendet 104094 Bytes (81%) des Programmspeicherplatzes. Das Maximum sind 126976 Bytes.
Globale Variablen verwenden 4096 Bytes des dynamischen Speichers.
So lack of memory space seems not to be the problem.
I'm using the arduino IDE 1.8.5 (but also tried 1.8.8). When I compile the firmware for a MKS Gen 1.4 Board, there is no problem at all.
Any idea, what can fix the problem?
    Michael

Sir, I have an Anet A6 that I modded so it can possibly print up to 450mm in Z (changed chassis, longer rods, ..) my problem now is that when I print something that is higher then 250mm the printer stops moving the Z-axis because it thinks its as far as it can go. Will I be able to make the printer go higher in Z-axis if I update the firmware? Or, how can I make the printer think it can go more then 250mm high?

I got sync errors using both Arduino IDE and VSC. For anyone else that doesn’t have a programmer or UNO handy, you may be able to get around this by switching the board option in IDE from “Marlin AVR Boards” to “Sanguino” (search “Sanguino” by Kristian Lauszus under the Manage Boards option under Tools>Board). My particular Anet board had an ATmega1284P (16MHz). Once I had the correct board and processor selected, IDE verified and uploaded Marlin 2.0 without issues and over USB.

I am using the same version of the Arduino IDE that you use in this video. Should I just copy and past the files into the IDE? I want to flash the board so I can use the E3DV6 that I purchased. Hi Daniel. I've used the TinyISP with the adaptor, used the Anet A8 (Optiboot) and had an issue which I can't understand what to do or what i'm doing wrong. First of all, I have a clone of the Anet A8 board and this is the error when I try to burn the bootloader:

PLEASE help. I used my BLTouch USBHISP thinking it'd the same thing after some research and looking the exact same. Ive now made my ender 3 lcd go black and now not working. Now the USBHISP is showing as driver: NONE in zadig. When I try to install WinUSB driver it fails. How can I revert this to be at the least back to the original USBHISP so it can be used for BLTouch again in the future. Unless this does work and I did something wrong. I couldn't get ATmega1284 to come up only Mega1280 and Mega2560 and was told because I have a ender 3 pro its Mega2560. I tries this, and tried uploading it from visual studios via my USBHISP hooked up to the ender 3 pro. Now I have this issue. Any help!?

Hello I 've loaded the bootloader, but the arduino IDE does not let me to intall the new firmware, it always shows me an error message, ser_open() can't set com-state for . com5. Hello David, I might have a workaround. Sometimes the avrdude tool behaves a little strange but you can still convince it to still flash your bootloader anyways. Check your output section of Arduino IDE what command line gets executed to flash the firmware. copy that complete command with all parameters and execute it in a console window but add the -F parameter to it so it will skip the verification. If you are not sure what to do, please come over to the discord channel so we can help you better. It's linked in the Description.

matter. No any kinda led light activ on the board when 6 pin connected. Whats the problem? Is there any way to check if the board is working without any software installed yet? Maybe I should buy USBTinyisp ? Or maybe this new 1.7 board is not good? During the flash in the very beggining I saw some LED red light flash on the board and that's it. I probably bricked it.
