    I've watched bunches of videos like this, I built 7 boomboxes on my own and I can officially say that this is the best one I've ever seen, good job!

    My first job was soldering audio jacks for an entire summer so I got pretty good at it. I ended up working at that place for almost 10 years. I'd say you did a really good job for your first time soldering. Here are my two biggest tips: 1 - put a dab of solder on the tip of the gun before touching it to the wires. This helps transmit heat from the iron to the wire. You want the wires hot enough to melt the solder, otherwise you'll get a cold joint that could break or have lots of resistance. 2 - Use spring clamps to hold your parts. Just put them on their side and clamp the part in place.

    DUDE!!!!!!!! Great project and she is Beautiful I’m heading to my shop now to take a set of 18yr old computer speakers my good friend Dave gave last week and do the same. Unbelievable that he has had them that long and they sound great. They come with a separate subwoofer.

    This looks great!! The only addition I would do is to install a couple of 12v 8Ah batteries and charger so you can make it a portable great looking boombox! It will require some additional electronics to convert 110v to 12v, to measure charge and stop charging when full... but I think it would be totally worth it!

      I use 18v power tool batteries in a reciver shoe, then step that down to 12v for a class 'D' amp.

    Very nice speaker build. But most of us don't have all the fancy tools to do this. I built one out of plywood and car stereo media player and car speakers. 12 volt LiFEPo4 battery and charger and sounds great , no foam inside and an vent hole on front panel. did I mention it sounds great. Lots of bass and good overall full range sound. I use it at work on my tool box. I may build a second one for home use or to replace the one at work and use that at home. will see.

    My daughter and I build a set of c-notes. I recognized them in your thumbnail haha. That box must sound awesome, the c-notes are great. The only downside is that you're missing the great imaging these speakers have by putting them so close together.

    • @craftedworkshop
      @craftedworkshop  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Have Drone Will Travel that’s funny! And yea, it sounds great but I’m definitely not getting as much separation as keeping them separate.

    • @1QKGLH
      @1QKGLH 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm still blown away when I hear the c-note. That's the best sounding $100 you can spend I think. And this box, in walnut, it looks as good as it sounds.

    • @toddzino58
      @toddzino58 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, the C-Notes are known for their incredible imaging (for the $$.) Almost a waste to use them in this application. I bet they still sound good. I do wonder if a cheaper set of drivers would work well in this boom box. Worth researching if I build one.

  • @VoltageGuy2000

    I like how you used a crossover to better produce the low and high frequencies separately for a clearer and better soundstage audio output. The cabinet was also created flawlessly which is a nice combination for hifi audio.

    Amazing results! Your title says it is battery powered - but you didn't really mention anything about how that is done. Was this actually battery powered or did you wind up just using wall power for it?

    • @craftedworkshop

      Yea I kind of glossed over it, but it is battery powered. The amp board I used has a plug and play battery pack, which I linked to in the video description. You can see me install them when I installed the amp and crossovers, they’re bright green. I installed two packs and the speaker has been playing on battery for 36 hours straight at this point, crazy!

    Nice work, I never imagined I'd see so many amazing C-note builds! Or variations of... Lol
    Thanks for sharing!
    By the way, the ports on the bottom are no problem, lol.

      Chris Perez thanks Chris! I just realized you designed the C-Note kit, that’s super cool. I bought the kit on a whim after hearing such great things on the r/diyaudio subreddit and they’ve been sitting, waiting to be built, for months. And glad to hear bottom ported is approved 😊

      Hey Johnny and Chris... I built a pair of C-Notes last winter and love them--my first DIY speaker project. I've been thinking about exactly this type of project for awhile now. Any thoughts as to whether it would make sense to tweak the crossover for some baffle step correction for this configuration, considering the baffle is now twice as wide and both speakers are essentially on the same baffle? ...or would that be overkill for this purpose? Great job on the build Johnny! Chris thanks for giving us the C-Notes!

    • @xConundrumx
      @xConundrumx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      alas have to agree there, the case is awesome, but ... the positions seem off. You want as much distance between tweeters as possible. Now the original C-Note speaker kit has that same overlap on their show models too but there it is a left and right speaker each with their own box. In a design like this you want to maximize the distance as high notes are far more directional than low notes (which is why bass speakers are usually a single box placed in the center)

      AND a lot of money to buy all that nice tools. If I would try to make this with my "average Joe" tools, it would take at least 4x as long and look much more "homemade" 😩

    I love it! The wood choice and stain was a really nice touch. The only thing I had a gripe with (probably because of my own design OCD) is the fact that the tweeter circle and the mid-sub overlapped. Only if you had another 3 inches or so of height, it would be perfect! Or better yet, smaller tweeter frames?
    I've always wanted to build my own home theater speakers. How much time did it take to put this together?

    • @chrisperez7592
      @chrisperez7592 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, the overlap is on purpose.
      The short distance between the two drivers give the best vertical dispersion you could hope for from a basic 2-way speaker. Single woofer/tweeter 2-way designs will always have nulls in their vertical off-axis response because the distance between you ears and the woofer/tweeter is changing at different rates as you move vertically off-axis. This makes the sound from the speakers out of phase with each other at certain frequencies (they will cancel each other out) where the drivers response overlaps. Keeping them close pushes that cancellation into higher frequencies, where the woofer has less output, which which minimises the effect. Coaxial designs are really the best as far as vertical response goes, but they come with their own issues. Brick wall crossover slopes can also avoid the effect, but the aren't really practical without DSP.
      As an added bonus, the acoustic centers of the drivers are almost perfect because of the overlap. If you flush mounted both the woofer and tweeter the acoustic center would be shifted down a little... Just a little, it really wouldn't affect much.
      Also, the large flange on this tweeter is actually a waveguide (shallow horn), improves efficiency (louder) and allows a lower crossover point... It really couldn't get much smaller. It is just plastic, so you could easily just notch the woofer into it. Just cut the tweeter recess, mount the tweeter, cover the tweeter in masking tape, and then cut the woofer recess.

      droid monkey thanks! The speakers are actually designed to be overlapped, I had plenty of room but I followed the design of the kit. This was about a three day build for me, with the soldering portion taking about half a day.

    • @xxxdroidmonkeyxxx
      @xxxdroidmonkeyxxx 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@craftedworkshop Oh, okay, that makes sense. Like I said, it's probably not a big deal, just my own OCD haha. But thank you for the reply. Three days doesn't seem too bad. I'm assuming most of it was letting the stain dry. I'll have to check out the kits that are available.
      And wow, I did not expect the soldering would take so long! The video definitely made it seem far simpler, but you did mention you had to cut it down like crazy. I'll check out your blog to see more details.

    Beautiful looking box, Johnny. Someday I'd like to build my own as well. This, and as you mentioned in the notes, Kirbymeetsaudio, have inspired me more to do so.
    Question though - why stop sanding at 180 gritt? I haven't used walnut yet so am a little unfimilair (my main preference is arizona mesquite). In the mesquite, to get it to truly explode in color and texture, I take it to 600 gritt while raising the grain on every gritt. To recap, every gritt 2x, with raised grain in the middle. What a difference.
    I'd love to hear your feedback. It's how we all grow, isn't it?
    Again, beautiful box.

    • @craftedworkshop
      @craftedworkshop  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phil Z thanks Phil! I’ve just found you get diminishing returns past 180 or 220 really. I’ll sand that high if epoxy is involved, or sometimes on turned pieces that are going to be buffed to a high gloss, but for a satin finish, I haven’t seen much of a difference. But hey, if you’re getting good results, sounds like your system is working! Mesquite is super hard I believe, so it’s different from Walnut in that way.

    • @philz9835
      @philz9835 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@craftedworkshop , thanks for the reply, Johnny. That does make sense to me. And you are correct about the mesquite being much harder than walnut. With the method I stated, mesquite will actually become mirror-like reflective before finish. I do it regardless of gloss or satin. It just adds to it that much more (for mesquite anyway)
      Thanks for your time.
      I'm glad I found you through Alex's STS channel. Good stuff.
