    The architect designed the add on slope going straight towards the house so that all the rain water will rush against the house and then will puddle on the base of the slope. Hmmmm. I hope they weatherproofed the side of the house well.

      Of course they did. It is common in historical homes and very easy with modern materials.

      @@TheEmbrio Just because modern materials do it, doesn't mean that it was done on this house. Hopefully it was.

    Gorgeous transformation and landscaping, but I think they might've done without the extension. It sometimes seems like the architects feel compelled to leave a mark; it's not sufficient for them to simply design a better ordinary house.

    The house looks fantastic and I wish I could work with such a talented and creative architect as Greg. I think the idea of "fitting into its surroundings" is overstated. Yes, the natural materials fit in with "nature," but a modern structure is no more harmonious with the countryside than is a 70s box. Also: the sloping land in the back was not addressed. A deck or patio connecting the new build to the existing structure would have a unifying result and also correct the slope. I'm sure Greg could invent something great!

    That’s a great transformation. First of all, glad they didn’t leave the wood planks over the window, it looked horrendous. And I think they could’ve saved the money and not build the extension. They had perfect corner for the dinner table on the other side and maybe it would even look better without that triangle from the outside. It looks out of place when the house is so rectangular, very obvious it’s not original.

    The exterior surfaces are a big improvement, but not the extension. It could have been just as dramatic and contemporary, and seemed like it belonged to the house. The similarity of the exterior doesn't save it from seeming just "stuck on".... and how is the water that drains off the roof not going to wash straight against the side of the original house? Bad idea. Can't go wrong with huge windows, though...

    I am curious about the long term effects of having a roof slope towards the wall instead of away from it. It looks good but I personally would have extended the kitchen into the back half of the garage, extended the top floor over the garage and put an ensuite washroom with a huge window overlooking the extended kitchen area and have the back wall of the entire back extension all glass. That wonky angled roof is striking but really sticks out like a sore thumb in the whole area.

    • @mujkocka
      @mujkocka ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly, I hope they made sure that the water are properly drained away from that gap

    • @rventura101699rv
      @rventura101699rv ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mujkocka that kind if roof design has been used since the 50s. that is practically a butterfly roof. The smaller triangle at the lower portion of the roof is designed to slope downwards where water will be caught by a drain tube on the side of the house. Pause the video on 46:13 and you'll see it.

    Makes me giggle - seriously these ones look like a Scandi timewarp to 30 years ago. The old stuff everyone now wants to change haha and yet the UK is viewing it as new and modern, meanwhile a lot of older english design is very inspiring to new architects

    I like the whole 'big idea', however the exterior cladding just ruins it. It feels completely disconnected from the surrounding houses and will feel dated in 10-20 years. If the house was made with simmilar colours/materials as neighbouring houses, I would've liked it more.

  • @elaineevans7126
    @elaineevans7126 ปีที่แล้ว

    Beautiful family. Very frustrating extension. If the extension was a square set at the same angle, it could have worked much better. As it is, grabbing the view makes you want to push against that outside wall.

  • @nickyshaw7677
    @nickyshaw7677 ปีที่แล้ว

    So the architect used a triangle shape once and now does it again, unnecessarily. The house looks great without it and the angle inside means you can't use the wall space much and end up having wasted space.

  • @mujkocka

      This value of the house increased more than the $85K they invested. Living through and in the middle of renovation sucks, but they are looking at a future of raising toddlers for the next few years, meaning they will spending a lot of time at home when not at work. Make it a special and magical place to be everyday for everyone during the times they will remember forever. The original house was horrible so the man made it into a beautiful home for his family and is criticized. I am not getting it.
