  • Alastair and Mary-Anne Robb bought Cothway Manor 15 years ago, worth a whopping amount £3.5 million. The couple have worked tirelessly to restore the manor and its luxurious 12 acre garden. However, costing £40,000 a year to run, the couple have had to open the doors to maintain the manor. At breaking point, Alastair and Mary-Anne ask Ruth Watson for help. Can she save the day and help the couple raise money to keep the manor? Or will they be forced to close Cothway's doors forever?

The government of Great Britain seems to have been hating country homes since WWII, to be honest. Despicing the entire idea so much so that they end up in ruins because of hineritance tax. It's strange, to say the least.

Alistair died in 2016 and since then the house and gardens have been managed by Mary-Anne, now 80, and her daughter Charlie Campbell. The manor has become a wedding venue and the setting for films, the most recent being China Girl in 2018 and The Voyage of Dr Dolittle.Jun 21, 2020
Robb decided to sell Cothay Manor because she said she would like to release some equity to distribute to her children. She says she intends to stay in Somerset.
In early June 2020, the property was listed for sale at £5 million, and sold in October 2020 to its new owners for £5.25M.

This is without a doubt THE most beautiful English house and gardens I've ever seen. What an accomplishment. Well Done, Robbs!!! As the owner of a much less beautiful and historic home and gardens in America, but one I've worked on for 9 years, and in large part made my own, I can completely identify with wanting to die in what I've created, and never have to live anywhere else.

This may prove difficult to achieve today, sadly. In 2020, upon turning 80 and with Covid restrictions, Maryanne had a change of heart and decided if she did not put the house on the market there and then, she would never be able to put her mind to do it later. And so they've sold the house it seems and the website hasn't listed any event or garden openings since. They already only opened two days in 2020 for the gardens and had two events, so I take it they were beginning to feel the advancing of years and opted for a clean break rather than remain there but with people taking over all the work in the garden and tours for them. Many do feel more trapped and as if they had lost control of their lives when they have to let people move in to help them than they do moving out into a nursing home. Probably why so many opt for a retirement home rather than open part of their house to a live in help, even when they have the space to do so.

So, Ruth's advice did not fall on deaf ears after all. In the end crawl, we are told of plans to create a tea room in 2009 - which originally, Marianne was uber resistant to. She finally I think, "got" the message, that the tours, the events, the plant sales and the teas and food are a way of sustaining her beloved gardens, as well as defraying the costs of running the place.

The intro is so sad, when you hear the lady of the house state, "We would like to die here."
I think I would have said, "We would like to spend the rest of our lives here together." Or something to that effect.
So would I. It's utterly breathtaking. What's so strange though, is that I've had dreams about this home many times throughout my childhood and as an adult. But I haven't seen this show until today, and I've never been to the U.K.

One of my favorites! Cothway is stunning, the interiors tastefull and the gardens a marvel. Love this episode. Mary-Anne is so full of character and determination but a very strong headed person. Pitty she didn't realize that they must solve the inheritance issue as soon as possible. She clearly adores the estate but she is narrow minded about its future. Mr. Alastair died in 2015 and fullfilled his dream to die there I assume. Do we know if Mrs Robb is still alive and in good condition? She must be in her 80s now. So sad to hear that the property sold for over £5 million in 2020. It must have been heartbreaking for her and her dream to cut out her heart and burry it to the gardens...

    • @seachange17
      @seachange17 ปีที่แล้ว +8

This property needed to be professionally managed. The Robbs were sadly clueless. It's 14th century, special and historic, a big draw if marketed properly. They could sell heirloom plants, jellies, organic herbs and flavored oils. And serve a cafe lunch! Definitely somewhere I'd would visit.

What a gorgeous place - the ancient house & the beautiful gardens - it's somewhere I would definitely love to visit. But people do need food - especially if they bring their families too - you can't go anywhere for more than 2 hours without feeding kids !!! Ice creams would be good, and soft drinks, and sausage rolls & other easy finger foods. I hope that it's so successsful; that ALL their kids decide it would be great to get involved ! But in the end it's so sad that a place like this needs so much to keep it going, almost nobody can afford it without doing this ! I think those inheritancve taxes are very cruel if the country wants to keep it's heritage !

Every piece of furniture, the rugs, art, and all of the other little details, including the rudimentary hides, is outstanding and ideal. The gardens are magnificent. It all looks as though a landscape architect spent years and millions of pounds creating them to look as though they been there for hundreds of years. This amazing home and it's gardens do not look like it they were created in just fifteen years. Everything presents itself as being original and added too by successive generations. This really is a jewel and a national treasure. I absolutely must make my way there before the season is over.
I pray they're both still running about so that I may impress upon them how delighted and grateful I am that they've dedicated their retirement years to not only save this historic estate, but created a more spectacular home than it had been for the last hundred plus years. This was a true labor of love for them both. If this historic property was still on the market in the early 2000s it would have been snapped up, gutted, and replaced with a modern home within the midevil walls by a wealthy foreigner. All of it historic features would likely have been lost or covered up. Thankfully, due in part to the rise and success of romantic period dramas, many of our large country houses and estates are being saved or revived by the wealthy and business minded buyers looking to live out or cash in on the romance of a bygone era. It doesn't matter how these important, irreplaceable homes are saved, so long as they are. I'll admit working on a listed building is often a nightmare. The work always takes ten times longer and cost triple or more than expected or budgeted. Nevertheless we get there in the end while preserving and protecting our heritage.
Again, I am blown away by this beautiful couple and the extraordinary work they've done in just fifteen years. Absolutely amazing. It doesn't matter who the property is signed over to. The details of possibly transferring ownership by the new custodian to a sibling can be manged at a later date if necessary. The important thing is to signed it over to avoid losing the estate via the £1,000,000 and growing inheritance tax. Obviously 14 years later this surely would have been worked out by now. I only say this now as a warning to warring families who find themselves in a similar position. If the children can't decide among themselves, the parents must make the decision based on which child is most suitable to handle the responsibilities of being the heir. If this is contested and the courts decide to divide up the assets, there is nothing you can do. The children destroyed your legacy themselves, not you. I've stipulated if my will is contested all assets will be sold with the proceeds going to charity. This threat should be enough to prevent finances from tearing the family apart. Greed is an extremely destructive force.

....methinks that anyone who doesn't do what Ruth wants is considered very difficult. Watching this episode has been so interesting; Ruth is all money, and her clients are all heart! A tricky path to tread.

What beauty. I believe Ruth met her match -I normally believe she's right, but this time I found her too headstrong; Mary Ann clearly thought Ruth was uncouth and a "merchant" (not criticizing her, I understand she has subtler sensitivities), so there's a sort of essential resistance to her. Personally, I agree that opening the house regularly shouldn't be necessary and that the garden needs a good tea and cake place but not to become a massive affair. Another alternative could be film location?
Also, it was weird how Mary Ann was hellbent on passing the house on to Charlie.

This was I believe the hardest one to watch, because a family’s inheritance was at steak. Unfortunately the Mother has stuck her head into the sand which stopped all progress for advancement. My heart goes out to the family 😢…it feels like a real tragedy about to happen. And I truly hope things have turned around for the better. Because the mother is very rude😢and that could turn many people off. I wish the family the very best and hope they succeed.

Ruth gets freaked out by fur pelts of dead animals in the home. Then she serenely drives off, sitting on the hides of dead animals in her luxury car. Nobody is perfect. Compliments to the family for having achieved something beyond extraordinary if they started from ground zero in so few years. I'm also impressed by their monumental stubbornness. Ruth has been uncharacteristically patient and has offered nothing but great advice. Yet, her input is repeatedly dismissed, in favour of remaining fatally devoted to a business model which doesn't work. That makes zero sense at all. And yet... there is something quintessentially British about this family. The old-fashioned sense of stubborn persistence towards slowly moving towards a more positive future, regardless of circumstances. This was a charming episode. I hope the family listens, implements and profits greatly. Finally, the daughter... I suspect she is the right one after all. She seems to exhibit the middle ground between her two parents' characters - which would be a very good combination indeed.

Having beautiful leather seats in a car in not comparable to having what passes as a rug with the animal's head still attached.

@@resnonverba137 @Res, Non Verba indeed, what a mercy to the sensitive emotions of the Karens of the world that leather car seats don't have heads attached. The heads, of course, got cut off at the abattoir and were turned into pet food for madam's furry cat. Doesn't matter, though. As long as you can sit on the hides of dead animals without seeing their faces. And as long as the hair has been scraped off. Then Karen's morbid sentimentality is at ease. She'll enjoy her Conolly hide without a care in the world for the animals that died for the benefit of her posterior.
