- Can You Heat Your Underground Buried Downspout?
I'm going to be retrofitting a heat cable for plastic plumbing pipe to an underground Buried downspout system. The reason why I stay away from most rooftop wires is they'll melt a PVC pipe so you don't want to use it in your underground downspout system. You want to protect your PVC or HDPE, depending on if you're running corrugated pipe or if you use PVC pipe. You want to make sure that the manufacturer says it's safe for plastic pipes. Here's How to do it.

3" pipe downspouts hold 56% less water than 4" pipe downspouts. In the north, it helps to use 3" pipe to prevent freeze ups.
Great idea to put tape over the vents to keep the heat in! 💯
Great solution, installed a system during the Christmas break using your products, turned out great.
Mr. Frenchdrain, Watching your education video's are right up there with the This Old House program. At the TOP. Thanks.
Thanks, Brother.
I really appreciate that.
👍thanks for the video
Bought your vented clean outs for two homes here in SE MI. LOVE Them! It's a very well thought out product indeed! Connected them to 170 feet of dual wall corrugated pipe with a 1.5 inch slope, I get fast flow, it's SUPER easy to clean leaves, and more importantly, NO water leaks from the downspout onto the foundation wall during heavy rains. Next project might be installing a new french drain system around the footer. I'd like an external pump, but the base of the basin would have to go deep, I'd say 72" to 96". can your bad seed be installed that deep? Can the collar and cover be insulated? seems to me like a double walled collar with a 2 inch gap and closed cell foam plus an insulated cover would help sustain sub frost line temps in the system through the winter.
We can build 💪 a sump that tall. We use a thermostat controlled heater in the winter. Thanks for sharing.
I use an outdoor smart plug (Kasa KP401) and turn on/off the heat cables with my phone, or by schedule/timer.
Thank you for sharing.
Appreciate you
There's probably also a way you could set a routine to trigger based on current temp, run for x amount of time, then turn off again.
Great video! Do you pull this out and put it in every Spring / Fall or can you leave it in year round? I have considered this type of solution but was concerned what that would mean for drainage and clogging in the future if this was in there year round. Thoughts?
That's a great question. For the very best performance during the summer months, not having the heat cable in the underground system would be best. But it's not a deal breaker to leave it in. My worries would be if you have tree seeds and tree buds. The pop-up won't clean out with that coiled wire at the end. Everything else would probably be fine. There's still enough of a screen in the Leaf filter to catch the big leaves, and all the shingle gravel will still fall in the catch basin. If you were disciplined and reached in your pop-up for tree seeds and tree buds, it would probably be fine. I will continue making videos and follow-ups. I appreciate you watching as well as commenting and contributing.
What heat tape did you use for the plastic pipe, i'm looking for something that wont melt the pipe. Thanks
I just buy what's available on Amazon. In the video, I show the packaging and talk about it.
There's a company out of Canada that sells a great product for this problem
Give us the name, and I will post it.
@FRENCHDRAINMAN heat line freeze protection system
Looks like nice quality stuff. Check them out
This is another reason it is important to leave an air gap between the bottom of the downspout and the top of the underground system.

Don't have that problem, lotta guys think it's professional to charge customers and bury those shallow 6-8" deep pipes then come back and charge when they freeze in the winter. My buried downspouts are 36" deep. Do it right and you'll never need these gimmicks.
Your discharge freezes, bud. Unless it runs to a deep ditch or storm drain, your discharge will freeze.
That's good for you that you have the slope to allow that. Many don't and heated cabling is the only option. Myself included.
@@FRENCHDRAINMAN dry well 12' deep full of gravel. No daylight, no freezing.
@@Mdan7 no slope, yard is flat.
Let’s be real here, not every installation can be dug to that depth.
