In my 35 years as a contractor I've seen a lot of structural damage. If you don't catch the water at the downspout - and keep it caught, you risk all kinds of damage to your home. This is exactly what happens when you use the wrong downspout leaf filter.

An even better test and demo of how bad is to add some leaves to the gutter. I bet those would come down the downspout and block the grates diverting even more water out on the ground.

The FDM leaf filters are a remarkable product. I installed these after taking our downspouts underground to our city storm sewer. We had a clogged gutter at the top gutter inlet and once the clog passed the filter contained the debris and had no issues handling a 1 story 30 foot filled gutter. We were recently a part of the large thunderstorms in NYS where we ended up getting 5.5" downpours and these filters did not even hesitate. Not a drop came out of the vent and these flowed smoothly. I was beyond impressed. i have 4 installed and will be installing 2 more on our detached garage which I will just use the FDM 3 inch pipe to a pop up since it is too far away to connect to my current main drainage line. I have posted this elsewhere and am glad they went overkill so another shout out and thank you to FDM and the design team.

Never thought I would wake up and sit there and watch TH-cam videos on leaf drains and not only find it interesting but awesome. So refreshing to see actual made in the USA quality stuff. You can tell if he is gonna put his name (and reputation) on the actual item that it’s gonna be a helluva good product. I also checked out your website and was pleasantly surprised that your prices are very reasonable.

The gutter downspout filter that you show from home depot is easy to fix the overflow issue... Just cut a piece of 3" or 4" drain into a 5"x5" piece and then insert into opening as a cover. Volia - fixes the overflow issue shown here.

I have the Home Depot ones newly installed and they splatter.
I am not ready for $300 upgrades yet. Do you think just covering the hole with black ducktape/flex-tape would work?
I have filters on my gutters so these downspout filters are secondary and won’t get super large debris.
Just cant have the splatter on my new pavers.
Also where would I get a 5” by 5” cover/sleeve to try that?

I think this is a good system, mainly because you can check and clean out the trap so easily. My only concern is that in a heavy downpour, especially in the fall when leaves come down, that the trap fills with leaves and clogs it--you'd have to be there then to quickly unclog the leave catch or suffer an overflow. My only other concern is the quality of the plastic--is it resistant to UV damage, cracking in temperature changes, etc. I think something similar made of aluminum would probably last indefinitely. But this looks like one of the best systems thus far that I have seen. Going to put on my thinking cap and see if I can come up with something better. Thanks for posting.

Looks like a good product to filter out leaves. Recently we had a plugged underground line where the gutters ran into drain pipe a foot under the grade. But our issue is pine needles with all the 100+ foot Doug Firs. They are the biggest pain in the Butt. We have fought it for years and noticed 10 years ago foundation damage in part because of drainage. and a heavy cement tile roof and altered engineering. A wall was moved previously what appears to be unpermitted. We hired an engineer and spent fortune pouring cement columns 5 feet into the ground which should solve the problem, however there is nothing on the market that comes close to being effective except this one you designed, however the problem will still exist once we install a finer mesh screen to filter out pine needles. The finer mesh screen will slow the water drainage considerable and will likely spill over like in your video. Pine needle clogs are not really a problem now that we have installed leaf filter, but recently had a crawlspace flooded due to a clog of many years accumulation of pine needle lodged in an underground drain pipe. So the plan now is to extend the drain into a dry well 15 feet from the house. Do you have any suggestions for a downspout filter for pine needles, hopefully leaf filter screens which we have now will filter out the pine needles. thanks MAP

I had new gutters and downspouts installed last year. I have really good (too good) downspout to ground connections but the blockage at the top where the downspout turns from the gutter to the wall seems to be my worst problem. This means ladders and risky unblocking techniques. what inventions do we have for that? My leaf blower is a powerful 80v electric greenworks and I wondered if it's just easier to make the Bottom connections easier to remove (like a slip joint), so I could attcach and send a good blast of air every couple of weeks during fall just to stop the build up? I do this now easily (and it works) where downspouts just fall onto my concrete driveway but for the down spout to ground connections are so good, BUT also so tightly fitted, they are a pain to remove to get access. Who has ideas for me? A slip like downspout joint seems the way to go! Any out there?

To be fair to the first NDS catch basin, that amount of splash volume you're feeding it (once maybe twice year storm) probably isn't that big of a deal. You could even have brought the gutter down more or done something to mitigate the splash (cutting the downspout at an angle?). Moreover, I think the leaf removal from the NDS is easier and more obvious than your system. BUT BUT the real downfall of the NDS system is that install requires drilling weep holes in the bottom of the catch basin to prevent standing water (which is very important in mosquito prone areas). So for all your slow-burn rains if the flow is less than the drainage of the weep holes you're just dumping all that rain to subsoil. So for any hurricane you'll dump all that volume to subsoil. I don't like this idea, so I'm going with your solution. Thanks so much for it!

@@FRENCHDRAINMAN I'm not saying you should cut a hole or to make it so tight that leaves clog, but you're 2-6 inches off the grate. Heck, maybe someone (or NDS) just needs to build the walls up to reduce splashing. (But again, that splash is pretty small for once or twice a season.) The benefit of the NDS solution is that with so much area, and non-enclosed slope it moves leaves so much quicker, more visibly, and with less maintenance than your solution. That cant be denied. BUT as I said the CRITICAL flaw with using this basin against the foundation is the weep holes (which are important in mosquito prone areas). During a 4 day storm/hurricane (constant rain but very low volume) if you continually get 2 gallons an hour passing not through your pipes but through the weep holes into the subsoil (not to mention all the smaller storms). Maybe that makes sense in a hard catch basin, but not next to the foundation.

At 5:50 this was installed incorrectly!! This product is meant to be fitted under the gutters (Top of the pipe) NOT sat the bottom of a drop where the water has picked up so much potential energy/speed!! This is how nearly all water harvesting devices are instructed to be fitted! If you fit it at the bottom expect it to fail!!!

    • @FRENCHDRAINMAN
      @FRENCHDRAINMAN  ปีที่แล้ว

I see it as a failed product either way. Let me explain. In a tight screen filter it has to be cleaned regularly. Who is going to get up on a latter to clean the screen?
All tight screen device plug quickly with fine pollution off the roof. It's failure no matter what. A coarse screen doesn't plug and leaves can be removed from the ground without the liability of a latter. More injuries documented with use of a latter the Statistics are shocking. And again most homeowners are not doing inspections of a device up top resulting in plugged failed filtervdevice pouring over during Torrential rain causing flooded basements and crawlspace. $24 to deliver to Tennessee? Too high…

The unit price to ship goes down as you order more. Put more in the cart and you will see the different. The shipping companies want their pound of flesh.

@@FRENCHDRAINMAN I added $180 worth of product, and the shipping cost actually went up from $24->$30. If you could get these shipping costs under control you would have me as a customer

The last demo was biased. You taped up the thing more than a hockey stick. Then thr next clip when someone was servicing one there is no tape. Show a video without your system all taped up to prevent leaks

Our prototype ( that was taped) was 2x3 and we used a 3x4 downspout. It was also 3-D printed so the material was not HDPE. You're not focusing on what's important here at all

@FRENCHDRAINMAN I see what's important but you should redo the video or clip out the prototype and use a final product to fully demonstrate the product. As a consumer I want to know the final product works without needing taped. Also if you threw in some leaf litter and such to demonstrate that it works for that also.

If you can do that I'll have my order in Monday

@FRENCHDRAINMAN I don't have underground downspouts because I have a rainwater cistern and I'm considering your product to help remedy any debris problems. Would you recommend your product for that application
